[Q] No data on my s3 with new 4.3 update??? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Well I gotta say I love the update alot but my s3 is flashed to boost mobile and apparently when i updated to the new mk3 my data went away...I know for a fact if i can edit my apns i can get it to work...the only way ive been able to always edit my apns was with the apn backup & restore app....but you have to be rooted...so my question is there any way I can edit apns without being rooted... or even flash?? Thanks in advance!!!!

Yes you can re flash without being rooted. Some has rooted 4.3 on Virgin Mobile S3 over at the androidforums.

ROOTED THE UPDATE SUCCESSFULLY
Reverted to stock recovery, flashed custom recovery, flashed SuperSU.. rooted!
No problems
UPDATE: SuperSU is not working after boot. It says "Unauthorized access to a secured area has been blocked" does anyone know how to get around this??
SECOND UPDATE: After rebooting, it has reverted me to the stock recovery. This is crazy. Hopefully someone can help with this.. or post a version of 4.3 without this Knox pain in the..
THIRD UPDATE: EDIT: I fixed it!! I have root access! I was able to locate SuperSU in system/app and reinstall; load up SuperSU and enable survival mode. Now I'm freezing Knox with Titanium Backup

Also was it worth the upgrade? I want to go to it but I bet when I do CNexus would already have a flashable zip I would have went back to stock with root for nothing.

Wow lol should read more...but thatnk you very much!!!! Yes man i really enjoy the update...i mean if what you like are stock touchwiz features youd be very pleased...and once again thank you

No problem. Also my phone is flashed to Virgin Mobile I updated to MK3 modem and my data still works but I didn't upgrade the OTA from sprint. I flashed the at&t rom of TW 4.3 update and I liked it since I love touchwiz but since data and sms wasn't working I went back to MIUI.

[Q] Question about un-rooting & OTA....

Hello. I have seen a several different ways to go about un-rooting and ways to get the OTA. My question is, what is the best way to un-root and get 2.3.6? I am already rooted using bombaradier 3.5. I don't mean to make another thread about this again, but I am getting confused with all of the different postings and ways to go about this process. If someone could provide links to the most updated way to un-root and get 2.3.6, It would be a great birthday present for me. lol.
PS. I did get the OTA, but I froze it using Titanium. If that matters...
Thanks a Lot
Cleanest way is just to back up your apps with titanium backup, flash the stock rom, update, re-root, reinstall titanium and apps.
Or, just flash a new rom with update pre-installed and de-bloated.

I know of several users (including me) who just updated using Kies (and then rooted again via Odin). This is a no-wipe solution that requires re-root but old apps and data are preserved
My is rooted when i received the OTA update for 2.3.6. I did not unroot and let the update do their thing. After few minutes my SGS2 is 2.3.6 with working wifi calling. Note: Once you update you need to use the sim that came with the phone in order for wifi to work. Hope this helps.

Ummm, if you are using a custom ROM , trying to get the OTA could be very dangerous ... Better bet is just find an updated custom ROM and flash it ...
If you are going to go to stock, make sure you use Odin and not a "stock" rom. I was on Bombardier 3.5 and flashed Zedomax's stock rom with CWM, except the Synergy kernel stuck which caused a few problems. Then, I just flashed the 2.3.6 tar.md5 with Odin. Now everything is fine and I'm looking for a new ROM to flash.

[Q] i317 lost root after 4.1.2 update

I'm running a rooted stock I317M with nothing modified except for root. I used mrRobinson's thread h t t p :/ / forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2004650 as a guide which worked perfectly to keep everything stock (and thus avoid tripping the flash counter) but gave me root. This morning the Canadian carriers began rolling out the 4.1.2 update OTA which failed a few times on my device so I used (GASP!) Kies to do the update. Not sure if it would have mattered OTA or Kies but I have now lost root. Has anyone managed to inject root into a stock image for the I317m yet? It looks like I could go with a custom AT&T I317 build or ADB in and manually install a custom recovery, root etc. but if possible I'm hoping to keep normal device status and not trip the flash counter.
Are you planning on turning your phone in for warranty anytime soon or do you just like the look of "Official" instead of "Modified" on your About Phone settings?
Exact same thing happened for mine, stock rooted Canadian OTA to 4.1.2 failed repeatedly, Had to use Kies as well and lost root. The main reason I wanted root was to switch off fast dormancy since my Canadian carrier doesn't support it and was killing battery. Good news is it stayed switched off.

Not really. Originally it was just to make sure I'd get the update without issue when it was released. My understanding is that I can always reflash with the stock firmware I have from Sammobile and it will reset the flash counter + set the status back to normal if the need arose but also thought it easier to just unroot, reboot and uninstall SU if possible.

Cool.... Honestly, I never worry about tripping the counter unless I need to turn in for replacement/warranty repair. Apparently, this seems to work just fine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2073141&highlight=lost+root

First time I've actually heard of fast dormancy. My battery life has actually been pretty good and that with fairly varied, heavy use. Have to look more into it. I rooted primarily for backing up (TB), remote file sharing and just plain messing around.

Thanks R1K, I looked at that earlier and still might try it after a little more in depth reading if nothing else presents itself. I use the camera fairly extensively and although it looks like the camera is only affected when patching the exploit I have to be a little cautious since I use it for work. Plus the easy unroot/stock return part :good:

One option which is what I did, was to download the 4.1.2 update from sammobile.
I then used mobile odin to flash it which has the ability to protect root.
So now I am stock rooted on latest firmware device status is normal

Doubt this will work.
The whole way this gained root was via the exynos exploit.
This firmware I am pretty sure has patched it.
Exynos abuse says no but voodoo app says yes.
I can confirm the exploit is patched in this new firmware so I suspect this will close any holes used by exynos abuse app to root phone.

Thank you Canadoc. Might be the best bet for me too. I did a TB backup just prior to the update so maybe I'll flash back to 4.1.1 with the root injected ROM in odin and then flash the 4.1.2 update from sammobile from mobile odin. Otherwise looks like it might be a custom i317 build for me. CWM sure sounds nice right now
For those trying to get multiveiw update and are rooted.... it is much much easier ti go get the firmware from sammobile.com then flash it with mobile odin with the ever root option.. all done

Worked as planned... more or less. Had to do a factory reset and flash twice to get 4.1.1 to boot but from there installed mobile odin, extracted and flashed from 4.1.2 (from sammobile and copied to external SD) and good to go. Now, if you want to go stock with root and for whatever reason don't want to/can't use mobile odin, head over to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2004650&page=26 mrRobinson is working on injecting root into the stock builds.
Cheers.

Hi prashant there are a number of ways you can update OTA without losing root but of the easy ones I can only speak personally about one of them - Mobile Odin - which is what I used. It's a paid app but it gives you the option for EverRoot which maintains root across roms and automatically installs itself and SU in the new rom. Hate to ask, but are you sure you flashed the right rom? He has it listed as the new! Bell rom under January. If you flash that with his directions it should work - that being said though I did have to flash it twice myself to get it to work. One flash with odin, stuck on logo, back to regular recovery, wipe cache, download mode and reflash with odin, worked that time around. By that time I had mobile odin and flashed the regular update without root that way but mobile odin kept my root.
If you're looking to retain or regain root after ota, this is the easiest way imo. Just answered it in this thread.

Thanks Froid. SuperSU seemed to work for some folks too if they dropped the dime for the PRO version. I did see some instances where neither worked too though, but not enough details to say why.
all you need to do is just reflash with odin rooted 4.1.1 stock rom then once that is done goto play store and get voodoo ota rootkeeper make backup then temp unroot then get the ota 4.1.2 update when finished goto to ota rootkeeper and restore root works just fine and u keep root.

[Q] Sprint Galaxy S3 Stuck in Roaming

I have Samsung SPH-L710 and I had it rooted with Mr.Robinson's method on 4.1.1. I had RoamControl installed and I had it on force roaming. Yesterday it was 4 AM, and I wasn't thinking. I accidentally accepted the OTA update to 4.1.2. So it installed successfully, but of course I lost root access. I was stuck roaming and it wouldn't change. I then used Kies to restore my phone. It flashed 4.1.1 onto it and it still will only roam. I have searched for this issue and cannot find anything that seems to work. Thanks ahead of time. I am worried that I will be stuck roaming for eternity.
Make sure you have RoamControl shut off. Then update PRL / Profile.

Figured it out, new problem
I dialed ##72786# and that fixed the roaming issue. But now I have another issue. I'm on 4.1.1 rooted with Mr.Robinson's method and I downloaded Voodoo OTA RootKeeper. I backed up the root and then accepted the 4.1.2 OTA update. But with the root protected it wouldn't reboot after I accept it. It just keeps saying "rebooting..." So I need to find a way to update to 4.1.2 and keep my root. I would really hate to flash to 4.1.2 and root it with Chainfire's method and then have to use triangle away.

why would you hate to do that, it's all pretty straight forward... our you can just flash the stock rooted Rom that's in my Sig to update, but that will also trip the flash counter... it's really not that big a deal to trip that though, if something goes wrong there is a thread by billiard412 that has a stock Rom that you flash that we'll bring you back to 100% stock and will also reset the flash counter... no need to be afraid to trip the counter bud, it can easily be reset

Thanks! So just unroot it with Chainfire's Superuser and than accept the OTA to 4.1.2, then use Chainfire's ODIN root? Best way?
Update: I just unrooted it through SU and tried to accept the OTA after I rebooted it and it still won't work. And sorry for being a noob, but I can't seem to find the stock rooted ROM for 4.1.2 to flash with Odin.

There isn't a rooted stock .tar for Odin, only.zips for recovery... Check my Sig and download the stock routed Rom, flash in recovery and then reset the flash counter with triangle away... although, my flash counter is at like 7, so there's no need to test the flash counter unless you're bringing it into Sprint for repair

Yep, it's possible. I just went through something similar. FYI: You'll trip the KNOX flag as well as the flash counter though. Just a heads up since at the moment that's a permanent consequence.

Ok thanks so much! I will Be flashing this to Pageplus, so the know wouldn't matter to me right?
Hey, also this doesn't tell me how to root... or am I missing something? Do I need to flash root through ODin?then flash recovery through Odin?
I have no idea how flashing to PagePlus might impact your course of action. I can tell you that I'm using a Sprint phone flashed to VZW and when the OTA update came through and buggered up my device I just grabbed one of the pre-rooted ROMs from the link I gave you earlier (along with all the other files I intended to install) and stashed everything in a folder on my phone. I then flashed CWM LTE v5 to my phone via ODIN3, after which I booted to Recovery Mode and just went down the list installing everything. I started with the rooted Odex ROM and worked my way down to the hotspot hack and the other optional mods.
I didn't make any attempt to recover my old system nor did I do a factory reset first. I just flashed and installed everything right over the broken system left by the OTA update and it seems to have worked flawlessly. YMMV
Hope that helps. Maybe someone who's got more experience can better guide you.

[Q] Plz Help 4.3 down to 4.1.2. rooted tried a few

So I'm by no means super knowledgable with this stuff but I've rooted a few phones, played around with CM on my old evo but for the most part I enjoy rooted stock.
I have Galaxy S3 Sprint 4.3 updated OTA from a rooted (4.1.2). When I took the OTA I lost root, no big deal I used Odin and flashed the CF auto root, it said it removed knox and I had root back. Cool!
In short 4.3 sucked, wanted to downgrade back so things like TrevE mod would work again and it wouldn't be so buggy. I tried to use odin to flash "KIES_HOME_L710VPBMD4_L710SPRBMD4_1130792_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5" but it gave me the "Use Kies Recovery and error occured" message.
So I then used odin and flashed TWRP and my phone booted.
I'm back on 4.3 rooted.
I've tried picking through the forums and interwebz for answers but I get mixed messages and info on international versions and what not.
I'm tired of trying to figure it out and really could use some help downgrading back to 4.1.2
Thanks,
Brandon

The 4.3 OTA installed a locked bootloader, which will prevent you from ODIN'ing back to a previous version. you can flash any ROM you would like from recovery, you CANNOT downgrade the bootloader. As of right now, if you have knox, you are stuck with it.
You are extremely lucky that you didn't brick your phone by using odin to flash a non-4.3 tar. I wouldnt try again.
My advice is, remain rooted with a custom recovery, and find a ROM to your liking, and flash that.
I have also heard that we cannot flash custom kernels on the knox (MK3) bootloader as well, but I havent verified that.

Thank you for the response. Is CyanogenMod an option then? If I go to CM could I flash back a stock 4.3 rom in the future?
As an added bonus question does CM allow wifi tethering?

CM is certainly an option. In fact, its what i am running now. CM11 12-24. Runs great. You can always odin the stock mk3 tar and go back to stock unrooted, at any time.
in order to flash cm11 you MUST be on TWRP 2.6.3.1 or CWM 6.0.4.5 or newer or the assert check will fail.
not sure on the tethering, but im pretty sure it definitely works on cm10.2 and i think it does on 11 as well, but dont quote me on that.

Tethering is available on CM11 just like it was on 10.2; would strongly recommend latest Philz Touch Recovery over either TWRP or CWM though. Although it is based on CWM, it has proven to be pretty much the superior recovery option for flashing any Android build number, plus it is highly customizable.

Do you realize that this thread hasn't been used in a couple of months? I would assume the author has no more need of advice based on the inactivity. Also, once Knox is installed, it is on the phone to stay. PERIOD. NO DOWNGRADING POSSIBLE VIA ODIN. Custom ROMs of any build are fine via custom recovery, but any attempt to change the bootloader will trigger Knox and brick the phone. Dangerous info to be posting here, especially since someone else who doesn't know better might try this.
