Best variant to buy? - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hi All,
I am planning to buy a Note 10.1 (2014 Edition). Bit confused on the variant that I should go for (WIFI only, WIFI+3G, or LTE). I understand that there are hardware differences in different variants (processor). My key criteria are:
1) Development support on XDA as I want to root and explore maximum features I can see only one forum on XDA for this device (without mentioning any variant name). All variants will be discussed/covered here? Can the same custom roms run across variants?
2) Any difference in performance among these variants due to processors
Connectivity is not a big deal for me as I can tether it from my phone.
Appreciate help on this. Thank you.

1: No, not all roms will run accrosa the different variants. Similar roms will though.
All variants will be developed for on here. Im working on the wifi p600 model and others on 601 and 605.
2: The LTE model on paper shouldbe faster. You probably wint notice the difference.
If I were you, id get whatever is the cheapest.

Which version of the note II will have the most support from XDA

I live in Canada, and we will be getting the quad exynos with LTE. I normally buy the international versions due to the support on XDA but this time around it seems the international version only has 3G at moment. Will international version come out with LTE as well? also with the different LTE bands its going to be tricky i think. The U.S. variant will get the same variant quad exynos + LTE. I assume it will have good support?
well international version only got gsm (3g) only
just get international version
Well, with codeworkx recently announcing he is no longer supporting exynos phones until Samsung provides the proprietary drivers(or something to that effect, its on RootzWiki) all support will suffer in the short term. However, I would gather that all versions will be popular enough for good support eventually. Also, Mr. Cyanogen himself uses TMOUS so I would hope we can get the ball rolling there.

Let's put it this way, which model you think will sell the most? The most popular model will get bigger user base, so is its developer base.
Unless all Note 2 share same firmware (or easy to mod), international HSPA version (n7100) most likely will get update first.
I'm thinking it will be just as it has been in the past. THe HSPA International phone will be very popular as they have always been.
Sigh. Singapore will only have the international LTE version. Gonna miss out on loads of customs roms and rooting. Sucks!

[Q] N7100T specific development?

I currently have my Note 2 on its way from my carrier, Telecom NZ. But its a slight variant from the standard N7100. It'a a "N7100T" the difference being it has the 850MHz 3G band. I believe Telstra AUS has the same one.
I'm no stranger to rooting and flashing custom roms, but I'm a little confused as to whether I will have to use roms specific to my variant of the phone? Anyone else have this same Note 2?
Historically, the T variant just indicates optimised support for the 850mhz 3G band, and software for the non-T variant works fine. Given this is the first T variant to launch, it may require a little caution - but it's unlikely be a variant of the N7105 or anything. Best practice to wait until a download of a stock build is available before tinkering too much. Watch out for fast dormancy settings on N7100 ROMs if you value battery life!

Thanks for the reply.
I was browsing through SamFirmware and noticed the Vodafone note 2 is showing as the N7105. I'm curious, what carrier are you on and what model do you have exactly.
There one other ROM available for NZ and its just listed as "New Zealand" but is for a N7100. So I'm assuming this one to either be for 2degrees or Telecom. Kind of confusing myself haha
UPDATE
Okay so I got the phone. LOVE IT. Just came from an iphone5 so quite a difference but I was on an S3 before that.
Anyway, I found the stock rom on Samsung-Updates.com so after a bit of browsing the dev forums I'll start to tinker.
Any update on this post? I too have the N7100t and was looking to upgrade to 4.1.2 but can only find it for the N7100.

Why so little development on the N7105?

Hi all. I was hoping someone could explain why there is so little development on the N7105. Is there something about LTE that makes it harder to develop for?

I would rather say that the problem is that it is a "special model". The N7100 is the "standard model" that has broad availability and can be considered as the main product (compare with i9100, i9300, N7000 etc). Most users and developers buy the N7100 rather than the more restricted N7105 (that is a bit more of a carrier model, carriers without LTE etc offers the N7100).
I hope that it will change with the Note III but that means that the "N7200" (probable name) should have LTE - i.e. no more special editions - just ONE version for all. As long as LTE products are more of special versions with a heavy reliance on carriers, they will have less adaption than the more common HSPA model.

Sum up about it! And since N7100 was out before the 4G, people got it before N7105 thus the lack of support, I was considering changing to N7105 of it ever released with bigger storage, but seeing the support is serious lacking, I've decided not to do it.
You could customise N7100 custom roms to flash for N7105, there's a thread for that and people reported got it working and everything.
You can also check the ATT Note 2 thread as there are several roms based on N7105 (with no modem).

I wouldn't lose faith yet nattychris,
Those of us in Japan have only this week had our SC-02E version of the Galaxy Note 2 rooted.
I noticed that at least a couple of roms have been added or updated within the last 7 days for the N7105.

Though I don't live in US, I don't think you could add phone feature by changing the rom.
I think you would have to have the international version that permits calls. I'm not sure if that will work in the states though because of frequencies etc.

If you're looking at the AT&T branded Note 8, SGH-i467, there's a thread in this forum on getting the phone capability enabled. I don't think anyone has been totally successful doing that:

If VoIP will sufficiently meet your calling needs, you'll be fine with that model. If you don't want to deal with the idiosyncrasies associated with VoIP, get the international version, GT-N5100. The LTE frequencies won't work on AT&T's or T-Mobile's networks so you'll be at HSPA+ speeds, but it is a true 8" smartphone.

I bought one from amazon and it had calling capability. Should be the same for all of them.
The are different variants of the Note 8. Some have phone capability and some do not. The most common variant sold in the US (in Best Buy and big box stores) is WiFi only. The model sold in AT&T stores has LTE, but the phone functionality has been removed. The N5100, available thro some Amazon vendors, its a true smartphone, but only works on AT&T and T-Mobile's HSPA+ network.

I use a note 8 LTE as my phone here in UK and am absolutly loving it....had to change from 3 mobile to O2 as 3 dont allow phone sims in tablets, seems O2 do cos its been working fine for about 3-4 weeks.
Rather than look foolish with a tablet next to my ear I purchased a galaxy gear which is not fully working as I am on stock 4.2.
Got rid of my note 2 and note 10.1 and have just a note 8, best thing I ever did!!!

T800 or T805

Hello,
given that:
(i) where I live the LTE version has similar or significantly lower prices than that Wi-Fi version, since it goes more often on sale
(ii) I do not plan to use LTE at all, I would be fine with a Wi-Fi only tablet;
(iii) I am not interested in replacing the stock ROM during the first one or two years of use;
(iv) I am a bit worried about the inferior custom ROM compatibility and support for the LTE version;
would it be justified to spend more for the Wi-Fi version only to gain a better custom ROM compatibility in the future?
Also I do not understand if T800 ROMs will work on the T805 apart from the LTE functionality.
I am quite undecided so I hope to get some advice.
Thank you in advance
Most custom t800 roms work just fine on the t805.
There are plenty of t805 roms available anyway.
I don't really understand what people want when they say custom rom or what they are actually expecting.
The stock rom can be modified and tweaked to suit most.
Custom roms are really not that necessary, I usually have more problems with them than anything else. Your main focus should be xposed compatibility and unlocked bootloaders. For example, if you're going to get a LTE version you need to make sure you get it from a known carrier that does not lock bootloader (such as t-mobile). Since you have no plans to use the LTE, make the smart decision of buying one that isn't locked.
Also, the LTE version uses Qualcomm processors, which means in theory it would have the best compatibility in applications because a significant chunk of Android uses Qualcomm in other brands.
Personally I went with the wifi only, because it was cheaper and it was only slightly slower than the LTE version.
Most LTE devices are Exynos not Snapdragon, in fact I'm not sure any of the 8.4 LTE models use Snapdragon.
Only the Sprint LTE model uses Snapdragon and that doesn't have a locked bootloader.
