Yes, you can use any kernel. No need to reinstall the ROM.
Kernel and ROM are placed separately, changing one will not harm the other one.
That also means, you can change kernels at any time.
But make sure, that you use ICS ROM with ICS kernel, GB ROM with GB kernel and JB ROM with JB kernel. Otherwise your phone will not boot. If such things happen, try another kernel.
especial thanks ,for ur especial answer my bro
I want to know if I need to install a custom rom or a custom kernel or a combination of both so that I can overclock my phone(1ghz single core). Please help. Why is everybody so silent here, so unwilling to answer a simple question as this. My fourth post of the same question.
hey dude....

if u install a custom rom it is obvious that a custom kernel will get installed automatically...
any way there is a app called setCpu that helps u overclocking the phone required your phone is rooted...
u can also use "seeder" an app that tries to add smothness to the kernel....

You would only require a custom kernel for your purposes.

Custom ROMs can be built with stock kernels so that's not always true.
hey listen...

cyanogen offers cpu overcloacking but stock kernel doesnot offer this stuff..

The question asked did not specify a specific ROM. The question was what would be required to perform OC. What is required is a custom kernel that allows tweaking. Telling someone if they install a custom ROM they automatically get a custom kernel is misinformation.
plzzz be clear

i think u need to read the question properly..
he is asking about custom kernel and rom as well....
if u use stock kernel then it would work only with aosp based roms with only minor changes not the change that allows processor tweaking...
and one more thing the stock kernels used to be part of custom roms of gingerbread ...

please don't ask for best or better...because xda rules..currently 2 kernel support miui, god's and xcelerate kernel ..try both of them and choose which one suits you..btw they are only compatible on miui v6 and v7.
Thanks to you two but which Version do I have to download and how to flash it?
When I have to flash a custom recovery will I be able to install OTA's?
Even Candy Crush lags...

try setting the phone into perfomance mode and if the phone gets hot it throttles and it slows down.
anyway, you will be needing twrp and if you have it you won't be able to update via ota because it errors (for some) and if it doesn't (like what happened mine) it will update and you will lose your custom recovery and root (if you root it).
xcelerate has build 9a
gods kernel has only 1 build (i think)
For OC try Xcelerate and use Synapse for tweaking
Hi,
I'm going to root my device and change the rom and kernel.
I need a rom that will run games lag free and smooth as possible.
which ROM should I install and which kernel ? and what state should I use for the Kernel ?
Thank you
anyone ?
IDK mate, you should choose yourself, 'cause we dont know exactly what you're searching. Try AICP or Resurrection ROM.
Is there any ROM that has a kernel that can overclock note 5 SD636 to 2/2.2ghz like 660?
All i see are roms with derp kernel, i dont want to install ROM and then mess with kernel install manually i had bad experience bricked with separate kernel flashing on my previous phone.
