No.
You cannot install anything that requires a custom kernel. Only operating systems based on stock can be used because they depend on the stock Sony kernel. As such, you cannot go above the firmware Sony currently has out which is 4.2.2.
Currently there is no workaround for the 'Bootloader Unlock Allowed: No' issue many users including myself are facing.

I know dude. Trust me. I've been tirelessly trying to unlock my bootloader, but from what I understand the only way to do it is to SIM unlock the phone and then have your service provider set you up with a Sony tech that can unlock the BL, but I have no idea how to do it. I owe Bell some cash -- not enough to lose service mind you -- but they're refusing to help me, so in a few days I'm trading my ZL for a friend's SG Note.
I wouldn't expect a developer to come through with a workaround. This issue has been present on previous Sony phones, and I don't think a workaround has ever been established in the past.

I know is pointless what I am going to write but I have not need to change anything in the ZL. The phone is already pretty good for what it can do and we will get 4.3 directly from Sony soon.

Actually we'll get 4.4 soon, so that's why the BL isn't a big problem to me because all I want is for the phone to be updated. Apparently it comes out somewhere in December.

[Q] Help with Flashing my Xperia play R800i

Ok hey all So i been reading here on xda for some time.
And i have been reading about the development for the our play and the nice progress the devs been doing with ICS.
My phone is a R800i
Baseband: 8x55A-AAABQMAZM-203028D-56
Kernel: 2.6.32.9-perf [email protected]#1
Version: 4.0.2.A.0.42
Locked Bootloader
Not rooted
No sim lock works with all providers never been locked.
I havn't flashed so much phones in my day, some wm mobiles, and iphones and a lg gt540
So i need some help with what to do
I know the first thing is to unlock bootloader
but after that? If some one could point me to the files i need, just the specefic files just for my phone. And a step by step what to do like flash a rom first then kernel or kernel first then rom and if there is any other files i should use before i flash rom/kernel
And if some nice people could give me some hints on the best ICS rom.
I want this either this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524159
or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404712
those two seems to the most stable atm. Or if anyone other have suggestions like CM9 or something like that
Cheers!
//Virtualxp
Well I do know is that you don't have to unlock bootloader to root

I have but hey would be nice if you helped out instead of commenting like that
You said it's sim unlocked, right? If you bought one that isn't carrier locked, you can unlock your bootloader using the guide on the Sony mobile site. After unlocking the bootloader, flash a cwm kernel, and all the possibilities have then been opened.
Seriously though, the guides are easy to find. Google is your friend. Just tell it to search xda specifically.

Hey yea i been reading alot and i think i know now how it all works think i'll wait for some time. People seem to have alot problems with battery drain =/ Seems it can be fixed through Setcpu. And how about the overlock? i did read that some kernel have the phone overclocked to 2.0 ghz. Does it shorten the life of the phone? Not the battery life but the phone's life?
//Virtualxp
Right I have been doing the same read all the Info available and been on the Sony site check to see if I can unlock the boatloader but that's were I have come unstuck as it's saying that I can't unlock my boot loader. Some help guys would be great the ics update is taking ages and want to play about with my phone.

Is yours carrier locked? If so, you need to unlock the bootloader with something like omnius or setool.
@virtualxp - Overclocking anything too high will always shorten it's life. Going to 1.4-1.5 ghz shouldn't make a difference, but 2ghz is very high.
For battery drain issues, there are solutions. A lot of people noticed the battery getting worse after the 2.3.4 update, so either they're sticking with older firmware, or mixing builds and kernels.
My phone for example has the 2.3.4 (.42) firmware with a stock kernel from 2.3.3, and a baseband belonging to a separate build altogether. And I managed to combine those without an unlocked bootloader.. Mind you, it was a pain in the ass doing it without getting stuck with boot loop. But this way, I have less battery issues, and I can still use the themes and mods made for the .42 build.

In flashtool, there's an option to exclude the kernel and another for baseband. I flashed one firmware, then flashed another while excluding kernel, and then again while excluding the kernel and baseband, using three different ftf files.
For applying themes and mods without unlocking the bootloader, I used the T.E.A.M. locked bootloader recovery installer, and flashed them with the update.zip files through that recovery. You can get it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437840

R800at rooted .270 Now what?

Just bought an att play phone off craigslist, had it updated to 280 thru sony companion, found no rooting with 280, so flashed back to 270, thanks to flashtool and you all!
I'm now going to call att and ask nicely for simunlock code; next I'm going to try bootloader unlock, so I can install custom roms and kernels.
I am not a noob; I have had a few android phones starting from htc g1 years ago. But, this is my first Sony android phone. In the last six months or so, I had a Motorola Atrix 4G with the laptop dock and then a Dell Streak 5, and now the Xperia Play.
Having lots of fun, you can say.
Well, now that I have a rooted xplay, what should I do with the phone, in terms of apps and mods?
I eagerly await your collective wisdom.

If you plan to keep it on stock AT&T build I would OTA update to .285 now that you are rooted. You will keep the root if you OTA update. To me .285 runs better and smoother than .270.
If you plan on using other roms then I would just get the bootloader unlocked and have at it.

Thanks for your suggestion/advice. I'd like to keep it on stock for a little while longer. I'm having problems with ota updating, keep getting "Only mobile networks available for software update" even though I have wifi working. Is there a way for force it?
Man just unlock your bootloader with alejandrissimo and it will be automatically SIM unlocked, and dont keep it stock with AT&T firmare, flash a generic rom from r800a or r800i you wont loose 4G, but you will a have a clean and modable ROM

Bootloader locked on S4?!

The S4 has a locked bootloader according to Engadget..
If you're hoping to run custom ROMs in place of TouchWiz, you may have to wait for a little while since Samsung has confirmed to us that the bootloader is locked
Why would Samsung start doing this out of the blue? Their devices have always been very easy to root and customize. Seems a little odd that they would do this.
Ok, you could post in the S4 thread itself since it exists as of a little while ago, or you could post in the Off Topic other devices thread since this forum is for the S3

Any HTC bootloader is unlockable. Do you have s-off/nand-unlocked yet? Exactly. Makes flashing roms a PITA.

Not that I'm a big supporter of HTC or anything, but their newest Bootloader unlock lets you flash kernels via recovery, even with S-On. The only limitations is flashing modified radios without HTC's signature.

In that case, I doubt it. The verizon S3 came with a locked bootloader, whereas the Sprint version did not.

That, and another thing, I'm surprised other tech sites didn't report this locked bootloader news after having their time playing with their test units.

I believe THIS is the article the OP is referring to. But as CNexus said, it might not be locked on Sprint. But honestly it doesn't matter to me. I will not be Upgrading to the S4. It really doesn't blow me out of the water with Features, Screen, or anything else. Not to mention eventually most of those new features we will be able to have on our S3's .

Ok well, thats not right. On HTC devices (only exception I know of is the EVO 4G), having s-on makes the boot partition unwriteable, except via fastboot and some other hacks
I just got finished helping this guy get his phone booting again. He flashed a rom for the international HTC One and was bootlooping even after flashing another rom. Fastbooting the boot.img fixed him right up.

[Q]Considering to Unlock the bootloader of my Xperia S!! Just need to ask something

But I'd really like to ask some questions...
Am I losing the warrenty forever, without anyway to get it again? (or i already lose it, since my phone was bought it in April 2012?)
Watching some guide, even not by official way, i have to submit my IMEI code, meaning that I must let sony know that my phone is unlocked?
So even if i reinstall everything, sony will still have a record that i have once unlocked the bootloader??
Is bravia2 working on jellybean with unlock bootloader? (I thought it wont works, some people said it works now in jellybean)
Thank You!!

I editer your post with numbers so the answers are clearer:
1. As far as i know, you still can relock bootloader before taking to any center. In theory, they can only deny warranty if the problem was caused by any hardware or software modifications (for example CPU burn for overclock).
2. In theory, yes. They will know. I am not sure if the service center check that info in their data base.
3. In their DB, yes. But the people at the service center might or might check that.
4. I think that only video...

Any chance of the Canadian bootloader getting unlocked?

It's forcibly locked. Just curious if that's likely to be changed anytime soon.
I know they can.. When HTC opened their devices to unlocking the bootloader they did it with a flashable update.. And we already know the rest of them are unlockable, so I don't think it would be that hard.. However whether it was an oversight or intended, I don't know. I've tried posting on there official forums and tweeted them, but seen no response to either. Hopefully someone else has better luck getting a reply. I'd really like to see it since they have aosp code for their other devices.
I was thinking about this and not sure if it would work.. I'm no developer by far.. But what if we got the official images for the g3223 from Sony site and flashed those.. Would the bootloader still be locked? I know the images contain everything (bootloader, radio, and system) so if we we got the US g3223 images and flashed them, wouls it work? Or even a non-freedom image (original direct from Sony Canada)?
