I spent some time cleaning out my SD card area yesterday from my computer and something went very...very wrong. The USB connection dropped and when it came back the entire area was wiped clean. All the pictures, videos, downloads are gone.
Been restoring using Diskdigger Pro. It does not list the SD partition but I was able to get a good chunk from the Data area. I do have some of the pictures backed up as well...I think there are still some on the SD card I gave to my GPS before upgrading to the One.
So I figured this would be a good time to have an open discussion on the best backup methods. I do auto-push to Google+ but it is a bit limited in space. Box.net has more size and would seem attractive but I never see many people talking about using it for backup.

I use my Meenova SD card reader to back up my system and store all my videos and pics. Have a lot more space on my phone now.

I am giving FolderSync Lite a try
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite&hl=en
Lite is limited to a few accounts, but I only need the Box.net account at the moment.
I think I may also have a backup on my computer...I will have to check and see if I can recover from that as well.
I think this may be related to Titanium Backup. On my work computer it looked like I had two backup directories, one in the root and the other under a folder structure that had the word Emulated in it. I had assumed that was just an error from when it setup and was trying to locate the storage area but soon after deleting that one I lost access and the data went away.
Between the file recovery and any backups I can find I think I should be good...then with some sort of backup in place I should be in good shape if this happens in the future.
I use box.net and I have everything backed up to it since I have 50Gb of storage there. Also getting a Meenova SD card reader soon myself.

i know this is probably a simple problem with an even simpler solution, but why is the EVO not recognizing my card? it's got some of my contacts, but none of my other data is there. does the Droid (the phone i came from) use a different directory or something?

Contacts aren't usually stored on the SD card unless you're using an unusual app. I (and I believe the majority of Android users) store our contacts in the cloud (Gmail, facebook, etc).
Could you be a little more specific on what data you're missing?
i'm missing literally everything on my SD card. music, apps, data, etc.

Can you read the card in a card reader? If so, you could copy the data to your PC, format the card, install it in the phone and then move the data over via USB.
seemed like a good idea, but didn't work.
is everyone sticking with the included 8 gig, or is no one else having problems switching?
No trouble here with my 16GB card. Maybe it doesn't like how your card is formatted? Try copying everything to your PC, reformatting the card, then copying everything back.
**hah.. just saw the post above suggesting the same thing. I didn't see any mention of what format you used, though.. mine is FAT32.

I'm using my 16GB card from my hero...no problems reading it here. I assume you've also tried reseating it (And double checking you are seating it right by making sure you can read the included 8GB after seating it again too)?
I used the 16 gig I had in my Moment and the Evo evowned it. Maybe the card went to pisser early and right on time but now it is broken.
Had to order a new one.
I would say format first.
i did format it; no fix still.
this sucks, man!
i took out my SD card the other day while the phone was on, it didnt lock up or anything, but when i put it back in, my pics are gone. on the card itself, the folders are still there, but they are empty. what caused this, and is there any way to retrieve them? i actually took my card out, and installed my friends to copy a file to it (his phone didnt have a rom on it yet, needed me to put a file on his card for him) so i did that, it worked fine, and shortly after, i noticed alot of my pics (not all, but probably 80%) were missing!
Take the card out so that it is no longer having any data written to it. Plug it in to a card reader and then grab one of the many utilities online that can restore deleted files from an SD Card. I think I used to use a program called "GetDataBack" or something like that. Not sure what is current these days, but there is a good chance that you can get most of the images back (unless those parts of the SD card have since had data written to them)
thanks, ill try that!
Get data back worked!!!! recovered 744 pics!!!!
Settings>sd and storage>unmount sd card next time!

i've looked into that before, but i dont wanna put all my data online like that. i have plenty of storage at my house (over 6TB) i just hadent backed up pics from my SD card in a while. you better believe i did now haha
got myself a class 10 16gb card and was hoping to use app2sd to place all my junk onto the card. but i notice it was only moving things to /sdcard which is still the internal memory...
has anyone figured out a way around this or know of the limitations?
There are no limitations. There's 16 freaking gigs already there. Use the new sd card for music or something.
The only reason I have an sdcard in mine is for mirroring, in case something happens to the device. Then I'll still have all of my crap backed up. Or in case my sdcard takes a dump, like it did two weeks ago.
I can just copy over the data if need be.

But you have to manually back your data up to the scarf, don't you?
I hate the thought of lodging all my data because there is no way to get to it if my phone bricks for any reason.

Why don't you just use Titanium Backup to backup the apps? A2SD will not 'backup' your apps. It just moves part of the app to the FAT portion of your sdcard. A2EXT will move the entire app but why in the world anyone would need to use that with any modern high end phone is beyond me.

Agreed - Put your music and videos, maybe even your photos, on your External SD (I moved all of my iTunes music/video/podcast library there and sync with iSyncr).
Leave everything else on your internal SD. It's huge. Use Titanium to backup, and if you have a dropbox account, you'll get a 'remote' backup thrown in to boot.
I have a similar problem . I made a thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414115
So the other day I flashed a 4.2 ROM and couldn't get back through NAND and all of this mess but was finally able to get back by restoring factory settings and flashing the old ROM I had. When I went to restore my apps with titanium backup about half were missing and the ones I had didn't work. I still couldn't do use a backup to recover because NY backup that had been about 1.5gb was down to 22.5mb because files had gone missing there too. Does anyone know what may have caused things to disappear like that or of any apps for the phone or PC that j can use to recover them? I tried Hexamob but it doesn't show any files after the scan and I've been able to use disk digger but it only shows pics. I've tried a bunch of computer programs but my phone doesn't show up in them even though the computer shows it. I'm not sure if that is my device or if it has something to do with the whole MTP thing. PLEASE any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated because I'm losing my mind here.this mess has almost been enough to make he want to stop flashing....almost.
when you upgrade to 4.2 the sdcard format changes from data/media to data/media/0, was all you stuff moved to the "0" folder?

It was moved to the 0/ folder but like I said stuff was somehow missing/deleted. I've looked all over and it's just gone. TB files and parts of my backup folder which is making it impossible to restore the backup. I think I need to find some way to restore deleted apps but have not been able to find anything that works yet.
So after going through more files it looks like a lot of things either aren't being read correctly, have shrunken down significantly, or have somehow been partially deleted. Aside from the things above, some movie & video files I had are down from about 700mb to about 150mb. Pictures are shrunken from a frew Mb to a few Kb. This is crazy - I have no idea what happened to everything here...
I had the same issue happen to me. Eventually just formatted the sd card and started over. I'm sure there was a much easier and less extreme way to do it.

I really really hope so. I'll be losing hundreds pf pics and videos and other documents plus all the app data and what not. What caused it to happen to you?
same dumb thing happening to me... i flashed 4.2 and then all my files were moved around in weird places, and they all say they are corrupt. After about 3 hours of trying to recovery all my pics, videos, and everything else i seemed to have somehow lost, I think i'm just gunna have to format everything and start from scratch. I'm kinda mad at Google
Yea my problem started with flashing a preview AOKP 4.2 build, but I have no idea why it affected my entire SD card and caused such a mess. Definitely not Google's fault. I spent 2 days looking for answers and ended up copying my entire SD to my computer in hopes that I can recover some of this stuff at some point and reformatted the phone.
Well the thing I was most upset about losing was a bunch of pictures and then my apps & their data (obviously have to be on there). The moral of the story really is that I need to be using cloud storage much more like auto upload for pictures and the upload to dropbox on TB. I just need to go through a mourning phase before I can move on and start setting that stuff up and rebuilding.
So the other day I moved some pictures and other stuff to my SD card to make some room on my phone. Well I lost all of the pics. I made a folder and the folder is there but nothing is in it. I assume I will never get the pictures back but why is this? I had a ton of pictures, some I don't care about the others I do.
Any way to hopefully get them back? I didn't delete them, simply moved them. At least that is what I thought. What can I do to not let this happen again?
Have you tried viewing the SD Card on the PC ? Also for next time, there are several options. You can backup your pictures to Cloud storage, or simply copy them to your Laptop / Desktop. Some work via WiFi so you do not even have to hook up to USB.
