[Q] HELP - Files Deleting/Disappearing After Flash - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So the other day I flashed a 4.2 ROM and couldn't get back through NAND and all of this mess but was finally able to get back by restoring factory settings and flashing the old ROM I had. When I went to restore my apps with titanium backup about half were missing and the ones I had didn't work. I still couldn't do use a backup to recover because NY backup that had been about 1.5gb was down to 22.5mb because files had gone missing there too. Does anyone know what may have caused things to disappear like that or of any apps for the phone or PC that j can use to recover them? I tried Hexamob but it doesn't show any files after the scan and I've been able to use disk digger but it only shows pics. I've tried a bunch of computer programs but my phone doesn't show up in them even though the computer shows it. I'm not sure if that is my device or if it has something to do with the whole MTP thing. PLEASE any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated because I'm losing my mind here.this mess has almost been enough to make he want to stop flashing....almost.

when you upgrade to 4.2 the sdcard format changes from data/media to data/media/0, was all you stuff moved to the "0" folder?

It was moved to the 0/ folder but like I said stuff was somehow missing/deleted. I've looked all over and it's just gone. TB files and parts of my backup folder which is making it impossible to restore the backup. I think I need to find some way to restore deleted apps but have not been able to find anything that works yet.

So after going through more files it looks like a lot of things either aren't being read correctly, have shrunken down significantly, or have somehow been partially deleted. Aside from the things above, some movie & video files I had are down from about 700mb to about 150mb. Pictures are shrunken from a frew Mb to a few Kb. This is crazy - I have no idea what happened to everything here...

I had the same issue happen to me. Eventually just formatted the sd card and started over. I'm sure there was a much easier and less extreme way to do it.

I really really hope so. I'll be losing hundreds pf pics and videos and other documents plus all the app data and what not. What caused it to happen to you?

same dumb thing happening to me... i flashed 4.2 and then all my files were moved around in weird places, and they all say they are corrupt. After about 3 hours of trying to recovery all my pics, videos, and everything else i seemed to have somehow lost, I think i'm just gunna have to format everything and start from scratch. I'm kinda mad at Google

Yea my problem started with flashing a preview AOKP 4.2 build, but I have no idea why it affected my entire SD card and caused such a mess. Definitely not Google's fault. I spent 2 days looking for answers and ended up copying my entire SD to my computer in hopes that I can recover some of this stuff at some point and reformatted the phone.

Well the thing I was most upset about losing was a bunch of pictures and then my apps & their data (obviously have to be on there). The moral of the story really is that I need to be using cloud storage much more like auto upload for pictures and the upload to dropbox on TB. I just need to go through a mourning phase before I can move on and start setting that stuff up and rebuilding.

g sensor/notification light failure.

I hope this hasn't been covered here before. I've searched all over xda and Google for a solution but no one seems to address my specific situation.
I used to have a Samsung Epic. I traded my friend for an evo. I swapped our SD cards since epic comes with 16gb. When I got the phone she hadn't made any modifications. Completely stock. My accelerometer and notification light worked fine at the start. Since then I've rooted and installed many custom roms. Before I traded her the epic I was trying to create more space on my SD card and wiped the whole thing. Bad idea. The Rom I was using kept force closing closing all my apps. I flashed a backup I had stored on ny computer and it was no problem.
I'm not sure when my accel and LED stopped working with my evo..these aren't features I use or pay attention to on a daily basis. I only really care about the accel and have been trying to fix it for quite a while now.
I've read in different threads to A) Unroot, wipe everything, and use an RUU to go completely back to stock. B) download and push the accel file over the old one under data/misc in the root of your SD and C) download the sensor debug app to see if it gets a reading. Ive tried them all. I'm back at stock, unrooted. I downloaded the file but when I wiped the SD card it deleted all of my root folders. When I used the RUU it created some of the original folders but not all of them and not the ones specified to replace the files. I tried to create them myself but it made no difference. When I opened the sensor debug app it did not get a reading..or...at least I don't think so, but I don't know exactly what is supposed to come up.
Everything I've read so far tells me this is a hardware issue...but if it was working when I first got it how could it be an issue with the hardware? I had to have erased some necessary file or source that's causing this problem. Right?
Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas? I guess since I'm not rooted anymore I could go to Sprint and have them replace it but I don't really feel right about doing that and honestly id rather just learn what I did wrong and how to fix it. I feel like there's got to be a way to format my SD card to the evo stock settings.
My only thoughts would be to either copy the contents of the original owners SD card, unless theepic has already gotten rid of her original evo files, or copy the contents of someone else's SD card who's evo still has these things working. Would that work?
Thanks in advance for reading this novel and for any input you might have. I've been lurking about in these forums for a few months now and there are some brilliant devs and posters around here.
Oh. One more thing. As I mentioned earlier, the accellorometer is what Im really worried about fixing. The notification light is of little importance but I feel confident that these two issues go hand in hand.
Thanks again for anything you may be able to contribute. This is a long long post for something noooot really that important or common.

[Q] I think my epic killed the microsd that was in it. Help?

This was the orignal microsd that came with the phone.
This is what happened...
I was taking some pictures when the last picture I took showed up just black in the preview window and wouldn't let me view that picture. I then rebooted my phone, this time the small preview window showed the most recent picture but when it went to preview the picture it was black with some sort of error looking image in the middle, same with the other pictures I would browse to. I had some calls to make so made those calls and figured I'd try to reboot again, this time when android finished booting it was complaining about the sdcard not being supported or the wrong format.
At this point I was pretty geeked out, have lots of pictures/video from the last month of traveling, so I turn off my epic pop out the sdcard and throw it in my nook color that has CM7 on it. The nook complains about the sdcard being blank.
So here I am now. Hopefully somebody will have some ninja way of retrieving the media off that microsd...
Also, do you think it's safe to use the sdcard from the nook or is that a bad idea as what happened might be something hardware related with my phone?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
What ROM and kernel are/were you using at the time? Stock rooted or a custom setup? I have had this happen twice before since I began using custom stuff and I lost everything both times. Hopefully someone may know a backup folder (if it exists) that your media is sent to. More info on your setup may help though

You might want to try putting your SD card in a reader attached directly to a PC and try some file recovery utilities. Just google free file recovery and I'm sure you'll find some utilities to try. You may lose filenames and stuff, but if there's data left on that card you should be able to raw read it.

@John - were the microSD both dead or did a format fix the issue?
I won't really have access to a computer until Wednesday or Thursday when I get back from this trip, so no point in stressing out and ruining the left few days of my summer. It's just really going to bum me out if I'm not able to recover that stuff, had lots of stuff from the last couple weeks that I hadn't done anything with yet. Probably the most bummed about the videos of A Perfect Circle and the Black Keys from last weekend that hadn't made their way to YouTube yet.
What do you guys think about using the sdcard from the nook? I don't want to fry that one too if something is wrong with my epic.
Appreciate the input, thanks guys
If you format, you delete everything. Try copying your SD to your PC, then format, then copy back to SD. That may help. I had no luck when it happened to me though :-(

You SHOULD be able to save the SD card but most likely your stuff on it got corrupted somehow. What exactly have you tried so far and what is your current setup?

Noob update lessons - hope it helps somebody

Seems like a majority of people were able to update to JB without any issues at all yesterday. I wasn't so fortunate as after my update my battery started getting eaten at close to 1% per minute. I thought I'd done everything correctly but after repeated attempts I was still having the same issue. Finally 1 poster (thanks Docholiday) suggested wiping my external SD card and that finally solved my issue. Anyhow, I thought I'd give some of you new users a little bit of advice.
1. Read everything, twice. Chances are good that your question is already answered. Like I said, I thought I was doing everything correctly and I'd never read about somebody's ext. SD causing the issue I had.
2. Back up EVERYTHING. I had a nandroid backup, a Titanium backup of all my apps, and a folder on my desktop with my extSD card contents. If I hadn't backed up that sd card I would have lost every picture and video I'd taken in the last year.
I've found a good way to backup my pictures and videos is using DoubleTwist Airsync. You install the program on your desktop and flash the app on your phone, and then you can set the desktop program to upload all new pics and vids and it syncs everything using wifi. I can open the desktop program at night before I go to bed and in the morning everything has automatically synced and all my pics and vids are backed up on my computer, easy and no effort.
3. Follow directions EXACTLY - there are some great step-by-step threads that people like mrrobinson, doc, wildchild, etc have made for us all so I'd recommend using them. In over a year on this site I have found that there isn't much at all I can't do with my phone just because somebody has made a step-by-step instructional thread about it.
4. Learn how to troubleshoot problems and make small changes 1 at a time. Reason things out, don't freak out and start making several giant changes all at the same time, you won't solve anything and could make whatever problem you have much worse or completely brick your phone.
5. Final piece of advice - don't do ANYTHING until you feel confident you can reverse it. I would have been absolutely lost with my issue if I hadn't had at least some idea of how to reverse the changes.
This is all basic info that many people already know and do and I'm not saying anything that isn't already on this thread, but if you are like me and still learning about android I hope you can learn something from my issue. :highfive:
I was not aware of a sd card issue. Thank you. I hope it helps other xda members.
Well put kingston, and glad you got sorted. If more people followed the steps in your posts, the elitist on this board would have much lower blood pressure.

Media area went Boom

I spent some time cleaning out my SD card area yesterday from my computer and something went very...very wrong. The USB connection dropped and when it came back the entire area was wiped clean. All the pictures, videos, downloads are gone.
Been restoring using Diskdigger Pro. It does not list the SD partition but I was able to get a good chunk from the Data area. I do have some of the pictures backed up as well...I think there are still some on the SD card I gave to my GPS before upgrading to the One.
So I figured this would be a good time to have an open discussion on the best backup methods. I do auto-push to Google+ but it is a bit limited in space. Box.net has more size and would seem attractive but I never see many people talking about using it for backup.

I use my Meenova SD card reader to back up my system and store all my videos and pics. Have a lot more space on my phone now.

I am giving FolderSync Lite a try
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite&hl=en
Lite is limited to a few accounts, but I only need the Box.net account at the moment.
I think I may also have a backup on my computer...I will have to check and see if I can recover from that as well.
I think this may be related to Titanium Backup. On my work computer it looked like I had two backup directories, one in the root and the other under a folder structure that had the word Emulated in it. I had assumed that was just an error from when it setup and was trying to locate the storage area but soon after deleting that one I lost access and the data went away.
Between the file recovery and any backups I can find I think I should be good...then with some sort of backup in place I should be in good shape if this happens in the future.
I use box.net and I have everything backed up to it since I have 50Gb of storage there. Also getting a Meenova SD card reader soon myself.

All my pictures were deleted but only from SD card

:crying: like the title says. Literally every other file on my phone is intact... but all my pictures were deleted only from my SD Card, man this has me stressed. I take a ton of photos and my last backup was 2 weeks ago
Can someone help me investigate this? TBH I'm not sure what happened. the last time i saw my pictures were several hours ago. I'm running android 7.0 if that matters on leedroid. I installed simple gallery app, deleted about 40 pics and that was that. I could still see the rest of my pics. fast forward a few hours later, I go looking for a folder in my DCIM folder with pics from my nexus 6p and non of my micro sd cards pictures are there. they are all done.
so far i've mounted my the 10 as mass storage via TWRP and ran recuva on the card searching for pictures with deep scan mode. makes this mystery more interesting is it found only 3 files! if you know anything about PCs if something is deleted it should still be present right? b/c it's not really deleted yet.
Sorry mate that I don't have a solution that you haven't tried. I know it doesn't help now, but I use the Mega app with a free 50GB account to back up my pictures and videos automatically when I'm on WiFi.
Good luck, I hope you find a way.
There are Android apps for recovery too - I doubt if they would help better than Recuva and I don't know any in particular to suggest. Also I don't know if you'd have better luck on the PC with the card mounted directly instead of via MTP but it's definitely worth a try.

Just tried card mounted with recuva and deep scan. also tried photorec.
what's strange is recuva found a ton of deleted files but it cannot find my pictures from DCIM folder. not even in poor or unrecoverable state..... something is fishy about that.

I wouldn't read too much into that. To be fair, be vigilant as well but it doesn't mean anything suspicious is going on. Although I haven't had this happen on my HTC 10 yet, on my previous four Android phones my MicroSD cards would sometimes become corrupted or lose files even when I'm not writing anything to them.
One time on the LG G3 (and this is really bizarre) just flashing a TOT (LG provided stock ROM file on the PC) wiped my MicroSD completely, and I had flashed TOTs hundreds of times on both my LG phone and tablet without that happening. Just pointing out that without further evidence, the loss of the files themselves doesn't necessarily mean anything other than the general relative unreliability of MicroSD cards compared to internal storage technology.

I see what you mean but just trying to figure out the point of failure. Can't have this happen so still thinking to see what went wrong... unless it was SD failure of some sort.
