Hi,
Few days ago I noticed that my S3 was charging extremely slowly. I had it plugged in for 10 hours and it charged maybe 20%. I needed a full battery so I swapped the one from my battery charger (the official Samsung charger and battery), which was supposed to be at 100% according to the charger. Phone started up, battery was at 100%, and a few hours later it died.
Now, if I plug the phone in to charge it will gain a percent every 10 mins or so and it will only charge to about 54%. Doesn't matter how long I let it charge for, 54%. There was one instance where it charged to 100% but 2 mins after I unplugged the phone, it was back at 54%. The battery charger keeps charging the two batteries to what it says is full (green light on the charger), but when I put it in the phone it appears to only be between 10% and 50%.
Today, I took a battery which the charger said was at 100% and put it in my phone. Started the phone up, it said 2%. Put the same battery in my friends S3 and his phone said 98%. Back into my phone, 18%.
Things I've tried:
Leaving the phone plugged in for an extended period of time
Taking the battery out for 10 mins then putting it back in
Different chargers (some official Samsung, one BlackBerry, one no name)
Charging from USB and AC
Like I said, tried putting the phone in a different S3 and no problem with that. Only has a problem with my phone
Booted into recovery (TWRP) and it will report the same percentage as the OS
Tried to download a few different apps to check the current that was charging the phone but none of them worked for the i747m.
Also used Better Battery Stats to see if anything was draining the battery or had a partial wakelock. Nothing out of the ordinary.
When the problem first started I hadn't updated the software (CM 10.3) but was still planning on doing a restore later tonight.
I've searched xda and google but haven't come across anything that has worked. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Restored back to stock last night using Kies "Firmware Upgrade and Initialisation", but that didn't help. I'm going to assume that is hardware at this point. Unfortunately, I'm out of my warranty. Right before it ended I took the phone in for repairs and they replaced the micro usb port. Could this be causing the issue? I had originally thought this but like I said, if I take the battery out and put it in another phone it sees it as being at 100%.

You said the phone itself will only charge the battery to what your phone reports as 54%, correct? What i didn't see was at that stage did you try it in the other phone? Just trying to determine if the phone is actually charging to 100% or not. If it will only charge a battery half way it is entirely possible the usb port repair wasn't up to par but I find it hard to believe that it would cause such dramatic drain as well. If it does in fact charge the battery fully then your problem is more than likely with the sensor responsible for report battery condition. Whether the sensor is bad or is simply in need of recalibration is the question at that point. Regardless of the actual charge of the battery if the OS is being reported to that it is below tolerance threshold it will assume the battery is dead.

Yes the phone only reports a 54% charge at most. I took a battery from my battery charger which was at 100%, put it in my phone which reported 2%, then immediately into another S3 which reported 98% and stayed that way for 5 or so minutes.
Given enough time (upwards of 10 hrs) charging the battery via the phone and the phone will report 100%. But then within a couple minutes the phone will report 54% and will discharge as normal.

It sounds to me like the sensor responsible for reporting the battery condition to the OS is screwy. It could either be bad and need to be replaced, which would most likely mean a motherboard, or just needs to be calibrated. You can try resetting the battery statistics from CWM recovery if i recall, i wasn't able to find the same option in TWRP if that is what you are using. Its an outside chance but certainly worth installing CWM to give it a try over replacing the MB. Lastly, if you haven't already tried you can try flashing back to stock and see if that corrects the problem. If it is software related this should work, if not you cant pretty sure its hardware.
EDIT: I loaded up the latest CWM and the option for resetting battery stats isn't there so either they removed it or i am just remembering this from some other device or ROM i used in the distant past. In any case i found THIS thread that should assist in attempting to recalibrate the battery reporting.

Ya I tried flashing stock previously and that didn't help. I had considered resetting the battery stats but I read a lot of forum posts that said this didn't have any affect on the battery and was automatically done whenever the battery was fully charged (or completely empty can't remember which one).
I ended up taking it in to the provider but they said I would have to send it out to Samsung and pay the cost since it was out of warranty. They suggested that it would be likely that I would just end up with a new refurb for $150. Instead I took it into a shop nearby and they repaired the motherboard for $90. Got it back earlier today and so far it's working fine.

seems that has battery issues. When it reaches below 30%, it drains a lot faster. In example few minutes ago, the battery was below 30% level and after sending a couple of sms messages the phone, without the "Connect the charger" indication shut down. Not even the battery icon was red.
What should I do?
After flashing the above ROM I ran an app called battery calibration (could this be the culprit?).
I haven't experienced such problems before the whole mess mentioned above.

Well, it seems to me like a "classic" battery meter calibration issue.

1) charge the battery to 100%;
2) let the battery discharge until the phone shuts itself down;

Regarding the matter of battery wear because of complete discharges, Li-Ion batteries do indeed have a lower cycle count than old-school batteries, but the standard charge/discharge number a Li-Ion battery can take is ~350, so you can't damage the battery pack by doing a full cycle per month (required to keep the battery meter accurate).

Did this work you mate? I have the same issue with my year old batter now... the phone shuts down @ 40% without any warning... and when I charge it, it starts from 0% and as soon as it hits the 58% mark, it jumps to 100% by itself... and i cant seem to figure out what the hell could I do to fix it... I tried calibrating the battery using the awesome method described here http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11823-battery-calibration-thread 3 times and nothing changed...

Weird that after calibration you still get that kind of issues, does this only happen on your current ROM? I have the latest CM in my desire and everything works just fine... Maybe try another ROM if calibration doesn't work to see if it's a hardware or software issue
i actually had issues with MIUI first.. the phone randomly shut down by itself but when i turned it back on, it was perfect... then i switched back to Oxygen and while everything was fine, suddenly one day the phone died at 40% :S and from that day on the phone charges to 58% and then instantly jumps to 100%... and as soon as it gets to 40% it shuts down itself... i guess i need a new battery but i wanted to see wether i can fix this one somehow so i can use it till the new one arrives...

phone turning off at 20% is fine mate because thats the battery guards against any damage
most of the phones ( smart phones) switch off at 20% as going lower can damage the System .
It shouldnt normally..It's supposed to work fine upto 5%

I just purchased a used Galaxy S3 and have had it for a couple of days already. This is what my normal charging routine is with any phone I have owned:
I shut the phone off before I go to sleep at night (usually around 11:00 pm) and plug it in. I'll get up at 6:00 am, unplug it and turn it back on. I've noticed though that with my new phone for the past 2 mornings, the red LED light is still on when I unplug it and when I turn the phone on, I immediately check the battery status and it has only charged as high as 92%. I am using the original wall plug (5V-1A) but the usb cable is not original. I also tried using 2 different ones with the same results. I'm just wondering what the problem could be and if anyone else has had this issue and what they have done to correct it? Thanks...

Soooo, last night I tried a third micro usb cable and I drained the battery all the way down to the point where the phone shut itself off. I then plugged it in for the night and the charging light was finally green this morning. However when I turned the phone on, the percentage still only showed that it was at 92%. I'm not sure what else to try and who knows, could the battery be borked?
How long does the battery last? Just because the battery meter says 92% doesn't mean its not full, it could just be calibrated incorrectly. Put another way, as far as the OS know 92% is as far as the battery charges even thought the battery is at maximum capacity. Unfortunately im not sure if there is way to reset the battery meter without root access.
Yesterday the battery lasted a little over 16 hrs. That's with mobile data shut off, gps off, bluetooth off and pretty much everything else. I sent a hand full of texts, around 3 hours of wifi usage and about an hour of music. I can't really think of anything else I used it for...
If you are getting 16 hours on a stock battery there isn't anything wrong with it :good:. If the calibration of the battery meter bugs you enough you can always root it and reset the battery stats, either from CWM recovery or with a capable app. I have SD Maid which can do this with root access, but im not sure if the feature is available in the free version. Im sure there are other apps on the market that can do this as well, possibly free ones, but im almost certain they will require root to do so. If you do, charger the battery overnight to ensure a full charge, if possible use a usb power source instead of the wall adapter. This is a slower charge and actually can achieve a fuller battery charge. As soon as you remove the phone from the charger reset the stats and let it run down to nearly dead, i would probably do this twice to give the battery meter a good high/low limit.
Thanks! I will try this once I've exhausted all other possibilities that may be causing this. It does bother me a bit I'm not sure why. Maybe my OCD kicking in lol! I've just pulled the back cover off and the battery in it is 3.8V and 7.98Wh. The model number of it I believe is GB/T18287-2000 and below that it also shows 4.35V. Can anyone confirm if this is even the correct battery in it for this phone? Thanks...

So another morning went by with the same issue and i figured i had to try something else. I went into The Source after work and went ahead and purchased the extra battery kit they sell (comes with the battery and a battery charger/stand) making sure that i could return it if it turned out that it didnt solve my problem. So i took my old battery out of the phone and when i turned it over i noticed a dent and a crease running down one side of it (probably the culprit). I put the new battery in, plugged the phone in and a little while later i got a green light and a 100% battery status! I was worried that there was something actually wrong with the phone but a $50 gamble later and im good to go. Oh i also tried charging the old battery in the charger but it would not finish the charging cycle (wouldnt go green after 3 hrs in it and the battery according to my phone was at 80% when i took it out).

Yikes! Lucky you noticed this before it turned into a big problem. With visible physical damage to that extent i would say the chances of that battery causing some serious damage is high, especially if it had went unnoticed and was used for extended periods of time. I would contact Samsung as they should replace the battery under warranty if the battery was in that condition coming out of the box.
See thats the thing. I bought the phone used and the issue was there since day one of owning it. Since these phones havent been out for a year yet, there should still be some kind of warranty on it and i guess it wouldnt hurt to try contacting samsung about it. Who knows, i could get a spare battery out of the whole thing.

My only problem with that is who knows how it got that way, if it didnt ship from the factory in that condition Samsung shouldn't be held responsible.
True but how in the world could someone do that on purpose? The condition of the phone itself is about a 9/10. Unless they took it out for who knows what reason and dropped it and whatever else. I'll never know. Maybe i will just leave it alone. Everything is back to the way it should be...

I have an epic that was working fine. I got a new phone so it sat with the battery dead for a little over a month. Now I gave the epic to my daughter and the battery is all wonky. It will charge up to 100%, but when I take it off the charger it will last anywhere from 20 minutes to 4 hours, which I got the other day with no use and airplane mode on. Now here's the wonky part. It only goes down to around 88% and than goes dead. If I plug it back in it says it has about 80% charge. But if I don't plug it in and just try to turn it back on it acts like it doesn't have enough juice. Now on this phone I'm on cwm 6.8.x or something like that and you can't wipe battery stats so I didn't try that. So I guess my next step would be to flash another recovery and wipe battery stats. I did just flash the peoples ROM 2.2 (I think was the number) just yesterday and wiped everything else for a clean install. Has anyone heard of or experienced this? How can I fix this? Will wiping battery stats work? Also, the battery was great, I could easily get all day out of it with average use just a month ago. Please and thank you.

Sounds like you need to replace the battery. Look on Amazon and eBay.
I haven't heard of this happening before, nor has it happened to me. Even though some would advise against it, i'd 'calibrate' the battery just to see if that would fix it. If that doesn't fix it, I have no idea.

From what I recall there was a lot of different opinions about the battery wipe in CWM.
If you google it there should be a video that shows you how to use it. I think you drain the battery until phone shuts off then charge it full, unplug it wait 10 minutes, charge it full, then turn it on and wipe battery stats. Then run phone dead again and charge again. Don't really want to charge it until after running it dead.
I used it a couple of times and it seemed to help but people say it has no affect because the battery stats are in the rom or something like that.
I also have heard that after you load a new rom you have to give it some time and the battery will get better.
I have never experienced what you are so sorry I can't help.
I would guess most would say its the battery buy a new one cause it sounds like the battery is only charging 20%.
I still have my stock battery after almost 2 years. It will get me through the day if I just make phone calls and text, but I have to keep a charger handy if I'm going to use the phone for other things. Sometimes my battery will drop if I reboot. It will be at like 30% and when I reboot it will come on with 15% and tell me to charge it.
They say the 1800ma model will work in this phone and I would check into that if buying a new battery.

If it was the original battery it already has some miles on it and if it sat for a month or two dead in the phone then it's most likely toast. You will get best results with li-ion batteries during the first 300 to 500 charges, so after a year or two the battery will naturally loose it's ability to hold a charge, that's just the nature of the beast. A new battery will do wonders!
The percentage that is displayed is usually directly correlated with battery voltage. So 3.200 V would represent 100% and I think it is 2.6 is 0%. So what sounds like is happening is the battery has a bad cell and jumps from say 3V or whatever is 80% right to some voltage below 2.6. A new battery "should" fix this.

check that 4g isn't on or google talk isn't on. Google now is a big battery waster too. For unexplicable drains, check for a defective battery and if all else fails a clean wipe/install. I've had just about all of these issues on the 4 epic's we own.
I have a battery / charging problem on my Gnex. The problem is that the battery won’t charge more then 60 %, drains quick and then the phone shuts down at 0 % ( in about 2-3hrs of use) and wont restart until recharged.
At first, I tought it was the battery so I bought one OEM on ebay. It did the same thing so I returned it and went to Telus store to buy an OEM.
Same thing happened with the new OEM. I then bought an external wall battery charger and charged the 2 batteries I have. When I put the first one back in the phone it said 12%?
I tried the second one which is the new OEM and same thing, its showing 12%.
I did a little test, I had 4.2.2 so I unlocked the phone and rooted (no more warranty anyway) I flashed back the ROM to ICS. No change.
So what I did next is I used the phone until it shut down at 0% and restarted it on the bootloader screen and left it on, on the bootlooader screen.
Well the phone screen stayed on for more then 3 hours, so I know the battery is good because there is no way that a 0% battery could power the screen for 3 hours.
So after it shut down from the bootloader screen, I charged it again, in the phone, and it went right back to 60%, I did try to wipe batt stats from recovery mode and battery calibration apps but no luck.
Is there a way to disable the auto shut down on the phone? The battery meter if definitely showing wrong charge stats. Is the battery controller part of the USB board or the motherboard?
The only thing I did not try yet is a custom ROM and Kernel.
Any ideas?
Sounds like a hardware failure... It's obviously not the batteries

I found where the Power Management with Switch Mode Charger chip is, on the motherboard! I wonder if there is some ways to access and modify the values of this.

For what it's worth, the same thing is happening to me. Charges to 64%, and it acts like it's only got a 64% charge - runs out fast. And I also tried a replacement OEM battery with no difference. I'm not completely convinced this is a hardware problem - though I guess it could be. I'm still stock Gnex (with the 4.3 upgrade - and come to think of it, this started some time after that upgrade). I was hoping it was some kind of kernel problem that i could fix by switching to CM. Anybody have any luck with that?
The same thing is happening to my phone, although I'm lucky enough to have it charge to 73%. Only realized the problem when I bought a new OEM battery and it stopped charging at the same 73%. I have a friend who has the exact same phone and will give her both my batteries to charge and see the results (with her phone then once batteries are reinstalled in my phone).
Outside of replacing the motherboard, would anyone know if there could possibly be a software fix? Has this happened to any other phone? If so does anyone know the results?

Sounds like a hardware failure in the phones' charging circuit. Since:
- no software change (ROM or Kernel) fixes it
- no battery change fixes it
Then it's obviously the charging circuit in the phone. Time to get a new phone!
Well I've confirmed for myself that it is my phone charging circuit that's giving me bad info on my battery charge. I installed both my batteries in a friends Gnex and both gave me 100% charge reading on my friends phone. I then re-installed both batteries in my phone and both came back with identical 13% charge reading. So to me this is obviously not a battery issue.
Since my previous post in July my phone has gotten progressively worst. So I have now come to the point where I either have to replace the phone's charging circuit or replace the phone all together. I would much rather do the first as any replacement phone via my carrier would require me to pay more monthly on my contract.
So would anyone know with certainty where the charging circuit is located in the Gnex? Is it on the main logic board or the USB charging board?

Hi, recently I replaced that battery of my mi9se by myself (so it is possible that I screwed up in some way), afterwards the new battery started to last incredibly less than before, having a very strange behaviour concerning its charge level: let's say the phone is charged to 100%, then in the next hour or so the battery drains normally, let's say to 80%, then it starts freefalling to 60/50% then the phone dies at 40/50%. When I connect the charger, apparently the battery is at a dead 0%, it takes very little time to recharge to 100% and the cycle continues.
Obviously this situation is not sustainable in any way, yesterday evening I was on a call with my gf, my phone died at 70%, I connected it to the charger and powered it up, as soon as it booted it was at 10%, then I disconnected it for flipping the connector and it died again... Another boot and it jumped straight to 43%. I don't know what to do...
The situation wasn't so critical at first, but I also tried to order a third battery, but the results are the same.
Another thing to note is that I also changed the charger pcb, the one onto it is soldered the usb-c connector, because it was flimsy af. I thought the cause of my problems may have been the crappy one, advertised as new but probably used, that I ordered from china. But I also tried to replace it with the old original one with no apparent changes besides the fact that now the charger doesn't remain plugged as an added bonus (that was the initial reason that led me to change it in the first place).
Software notes:
I'm currently running the latest official build of lineageOS, I could try to do a software update, but idk if it could change something...
I have root access with magisk (if some low level root operations are needed I should be able to perform them)
I was running Advanced Charging Controller (https://github.com/VR-25/acc), that I uninstalled yesterday when it came to my mind that it may be messing with the battery readings, but without success.
I should also note that I run several calibration cycles as advertised on many forums: charge to 100%, let it die by battery drain and charge it again to 100% without interruption and without powering it up. No improvements.
Sadly I study offsite and I left the old battery at home, so I have to wait till next friday if some solutions involve using the old battery.
Thanks for saving me and my phone, that, beside his battery, it still works like a charm! Switching to lineage seemed to give him another 2/3 years of life and I really wanted to keep it as long as it works.
