[Q] Hard Bricked not showing in device manager - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

O.K. So I got my hands on a hard bricked T-mobile GS4 that I'm going to JTAG. My problem is that it won't show up on any PC (3 of them) that I connect it to. I tried a different battery and USB cable and still nothing. Before you ask yes I have my drivers installed and my other GS4's all show up on any PC that I connect to. Even with it hard bricked I should still be able to see it on my PC but I can't. Any ideas as to what's up with this particular GS4?

Not all phones will show up when they're not healthy. If you're planning to JTAG, why not just send it off and get that done? Have you tried a jig?

Yeah I have a JIG and tried it but that was a no go. I have a RIFF BOX so I can JTAG it myself, in order to do it the pc needs to see it but it is not showing up at all when I plug it into the usb. I've JTAG a few hard bricked GS4's and never had one that would not show up in device manager.

If this can be done, you'll need alternate drivers, check Riff's site. I don't have one, so I can't help you much more from there.

Were you able to get the jtag done?

There is some kind of power problem with it. The board gets hot just above the battery contacts. I'm at a standstill until I can figure out what part is bad.

[Q] Bricked - phone appears as a qhsusb_dload device

was flashing the update through Odin things went horribly awry . Left me with a phone which will not power on, will not go into download mode when holding the vol +/- buttons and connecting USB and appears in Win 7 Device Manager as a qhusb_download device which Windows does not have drivers for.
Any salvaging this? a replacement is on its way to me but I'd rather not be without the phone for the next week while I wait for it.
Thanks
You'll probably need a USB jig to get into download mode now.

Jigs work with the SGSII? Okay, I'll build one tomorrow (no resistors at home and no where to go get a package tonight)
My phone was in this exact same position two days ago (see my thread here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1387752). I tried a USB jig but it didn't work. Unfortunately there's no way to fix it at this point, they have to re-flash it at the factory. I didn't have handset protection with T-Mobile so I bought another one this morning.
I'd also like to confirm that the jig does not work on this model. I had bricked 2 phones in two days and tried two home-made jigs and one purchased from eBay. Ended up taking back to T-Mobile store as they were both under the 14 day grace period.
The jig works...if you don't believe me search away. Obviously it doesn't work if your T989 is beyond repair.

Yes, the jig does work, but it's unnecessary at best. The jig works only if your phone can still be flashed in Odin (meaning, your download mode works). If your download mode works, you don't need the jig in the first place.
Its useless compared to how it works on say, the Captivate S. It will put the Captivate in download mode regardless of how bricked it gets, whereas it won't in ours. Hopefully that makes sense.
Well said ghetto. Makes perfect sense.

I was trying to repartition it with Odin and the latest ROM and used a .pit file that I thought was for the phone. The process started and never progressed. I finally decided to powercycle the phone and hope for the best but ended up with a brick.

So, what you didn't say is that if the phone won't go into Download mode when both the volume buttons are held down and the USB cable is connected then the Jig doesn't cause that to happen.
If that's the case there's really no point in me destroying a miniUSB cable... sigh...
**UPDATE** I closed Oden and killed all processes related to Kies. Then with my phone still in download mode, I quickly unplugged and plugged the cord into the PC's USB port. Odin was able to communicate with the phone and flash the firmware successfully. Hopefully this info will be useful to some other soul and save their butt.
I think I may have bricked my phone also. I was flashing the latest firmware also, it almost completed and then Odin said it failed. Now the device is still in download mode, Odin can't seem to establish a connection, and I'm afraid to pull the USB cable out or power-cycle the phone. Anyone have any ideas? This really sux

That would be correct. If you can't get it into download mode normally (volume up+down plug in usb cord) then a jig will do nothing for you

Glad to hear you saved it! As long as the phone is in download mode, you can still unplug the cord, plug it back in, and Odin will flash the Nand.

well i believe the majority of us were experience people who knew how to flash and etc. what probally screwed us over was T-Mobile/AT&T call our phones Samsung Galaxy s2. In europe they also have a phone with the same name. From there we search up Samsung Galaxy S2. and get lead to the I9000 (Europe) rather than the Tmobile (SGH-T989) or AT&T (Skyrocket) all labeled as Samsung Galaxy s2. so we put the wrong kernals and roms in. end result: expensive paperweight.

I would suggest buying a new cable and trying that. Seems a lot of users are encountering this lately. The wires that carry data fail, but the wires that carry power still function. It doesn't have to be a Samsung branded cable, but one specifically for charging/data for the SGH-T989. It happened to me both on this phone, and my Transformer. Both times it was solved by using a new cable.
Your local electronics store should carry what you need. Good luck!

I tried it. No help :/. I think it is the phone's usb port that makes this problem. Probably I'll send it to samsung company to have it fixed.
Before u diagnose the phone as the issue i would check and try plugging it to another pc besides the one that doesnt detect it because i have the same issue with my main pc. When i plug it it opens up as an unreadable drive, it wount open or anything, but when i plug it to my laptop it works perfect.
kind of wierd but it works. i also tried installing kies and didnt help at all. now it it still doesnt work than yea probably the phone.

Also remove sim, sd card, and battery for a bit then replace. Also, get the most "official" cable you can. I'm working with an old evo cable and an old g2 cable. Some of the car charging ones/generics won't play nice. Try blowing (light laughing allowed) into the port.

Ok here is what i did:
1-enable EHCI on your computer from device manage >> http://www.intel.com/technology/usb/ehcispec.htm
2-took a portable toothbrush with isoprop (swabbing alcohol)
3-took my phone to the gas station ...25c air and dried the crap out of it
4-wipe/reset my phone from fast boot menu (not android menu)
5-got an LG "B" data cable...
voila monsieur !!!! i dont know which was the silverbullet but i aint complainin.
However, it was still nice to know that Samsung is a no questions asked manufacturer.
Someone was having the same issues as mine in russia, and he said ICS 4.0 did it and is waaaaaaaaaaay better for this phone. Im gonna give this to a friend and WILL NOT touch these till ICS 4 officially comes out here. Tooo much hassle and ive got too much info riding on it (phone). <<personal opinion

USB Jig and OMAPFlash_tuna doesn't restore bricked GNex

Now what? Do I have any more options? I've already tired all the other combination button+power combo/ battery pull, etc.
The Jig is working because I've confirmed it to work with my brother's galaxy nexus.
OMAPFlash_tuna stops downloading and sending files to the device.
Screen is completely blank and dead. However, the device is found under DeviceManager as OMAP4460 USB Device when plugged into a usb cable.
What other options do I have? I want to bring my device back to life. =(
Try finding something called the omap flash

I am curious about the cause of your brick.
Truthfully, I don't know what caused it to stopped.
I rebooted the device while waiting for the cashier in a store. Placed the phone in my jacket while it rebooted. Turns out it never rebooted. And that's the story. Dead phone.
One minute it was fully 100% operational, next, it's dead. No explanation.
Help would be great. Would Jtag work for this? I have no idead what jtag is but ive read about it.
Given that the jig couldnt bring it back to life, any luck jtag would work?

You'd have to look for those jtag points on the pcb. Maybe drop by Adam Outler dev thread (Unbrickable mod). I think I remember them talking about a omap manual, so the information is out there.

[Q] USB doesn't work with computers, only charging. How to flash ROM?

for some reason Sony Thailand couldn't declassified, been like this since the first day. Going back and forth to service center tons of times and they COULDN'T FIX IT. My dad's Xperia Play won't connect to ANY computer, no bing-bong sound when plugging no nothing, not see anything on the phone except that it's charging, it's like the computers aren't existed, only the power gets through.
Now Sony still not fixing this problem, so for this old phone how can I unlock it and flash ROMs without a connection to PC? By any means.
Thank you!!
Have you tried changing usb cable? Maybe it is broken (mine got broken after a week or so, and it was the original one come with the phone of course), since it's impossible that they sold you a device with damaged micro-usb port.
Or maybe it is the usb port you're connecting it to: some PCs have a lower voltage in front usb ports, so you must connect the Play to the rear ones installed on the motherboard of the PC

I think they sold my dad a faulty device and when he tried to claim it after a week they didn't want to replace the phone so they told him they could't fix it. This country's Sony is known to sell faulty devices, my last Xmini was also broken...
and yes I did try other cables, Sammy, LG and some chinese made, nothing works. They did work with my Nokia N8 and S3, however. All the ports in my PC have failed, also.
so I can do nothing, stuck with RAM hungry 2.3 bloated ROM without any solution to make it faster.

Help w/ Replacement Note 4 says unknown device in Windows. Old works fine

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers.
I have installed kids and then smart switch.
My old note 4 that was defective shows up in Windows but the replacement shows as 'unknown device'
I tried safe mode to un install drivers and different USB ports.
Is my device defective? Any ideas?
Thanks!
Maybe try going to developer options and checking if usb debugging is turned off. Try turning it on. Try a different usb port. Try to switch between different usb modes in the notification area when connected. Last but not least factory reset your phone in recovery mode and try connecting it after.
I am experiencing the same problem but I have another problem as well. My phone is an unrooted Galaxy Note 4 running 5.0.1 w/ VRU2BOG5 build. I have tried just about all the USB ports on my computer and get the same result, "unknown device". I have uninstall and reinstalled kies and the associated drivers and still get the same result. I have factory reset the phone and still the same. I was even able to do a firmware upgrade and initialization via kies and still the same problem.
The other problem I am faced with is I can not seem to get any OTG cable to work on my device. Could this be hand in hand?
I am not sure if you (the OP) have noticed but when you installed kies, have you gotten an error for your ethernet controller under other devices in your device manager?
I really like the phone but if I can't 1) root it or 2) transfer data via the usb port (especially through the OTG cable), the phone is useless to me. Any help would be very appreciated.
The USB port may be defective. I replaced mine on my note 2 myself for cheap. But if the phone is still under warranty let them deal with it. You guys tried different cables/computers?

I am not entirely sure it's a bad port but could be. On my note, everything besides a flash drive via OTG cable works. Oh and the computer but it will connect to my laptop. I dunno I'm about to sell the phone.
