[Q] Problem with micro usb port or what? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good evening.
My friend gave me to fix his phone, and here what's wrong with this phone - when I put his on charger red led blinks for a ~10secs and then orange (idk, maybe it's red ) and green led appears. And they blinking all time. I thought it was a problem with a battery, but when I charge it with wires it's ok, DZ boot's up. Everything looks OK, just won't charge. Ow, and when I selected HTC Sense when usb connected, my laptop can't install drivers for DZ, and nothing appears in My Computer.
Where's the problem?
Should I buy a new micro usb and replace old one?
Can i replace it with heat gun? I have same practice with solder iron, but not with small "items" soldering, like this one.

c'mon, someone..

try other usb cables and pcs first, if you find this problem persists than it's very likely the port
no, a heat gun wont suffice, you will need to solder.
It isnt too hard but if you're not comfortable i would advice to find someone who is as it could easily fry the board if done wrong
the port should be cheap, if you look around less than $5 and an electronic shop i cant image would charge more than $20 to do this (but dont know for sure)
best of luck!

loose charger/data cable

I have had a quick look around and am unable to find anything on this so i am assuming that my phone is not right.
Basically when i plug the micro usb into the bottom of my desire it seems very loose ie i can wobble it side to side and it still has about half a mm of metal visible. Any for of weight (even just the weight of the cable itself) it falls out. Other than this it works fine it charges and transfers data ok. Is this just a bad design or should i get my phone repaired.
Also does anyone know how long it takes for a repair with htc?
I have been through no end of cables/adapters ... try replacing the cable before sending the phone off
Priz
I had the same issue. I have since replaced the cable with a 'generic
one and all seems fine.
As above - try a new cable, first.
Thankyou for the advise. Its good to know its not just me thats had this and a simple fix cold be the answer. I should be able to sly another cable from around work and give it a try.
My cable is loose also. It happened when I by mistake kicked the cable while the phone was charging. It ended up on the floor and after that the cable is loose. I will probably buy a new one.

USB Charging port Burned

Hello,
I just had my HOX USB port burnt.
It was charging when I notice the battery was very low and no red led.
I had it previously charged in car, so it might have being some kind of spike current/voltage, I suppose.
Plugin into the computer, no sign of USB connection (even thru dmesg).
This would be a simple case of sent it back to HTC for a replacement/repair. However, I am in Brazil and things never goes as supposed to here.
I contact HTC here and basically the HOX is not supported in Brasil, they simple do not care whatever I do about it. So I am on my own.
As I know there are some people here with repair knowledge, I would really appreciate any help.
As I had some battery before it fully discharged, I could test that everything else was fine (or seems to be).
I am assuming that there is some protection in the port to avoid this kind of situation to fry everything else.
I thought about using the pogo pins to charge until I get this fixed, so I ordered HTC's dock and a battery case from Mugen Power. But after I test charging gnd on pogo pin 1 and Vcc on pin 5, It seems that they are indeed connected to the usb port. Which is the correct as it shall use the same protection.
So, I found this one as the replacement port:
can't post link yet, bu it is this one on bay . com:
/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200732783334
Right now, I need to know if I am on the right track.
Replacing the port is enough? or should I look into replacing some onboard capacitors/resistors/ICs as part of the protection circuitry?
Thanks for you patience!

Im not an electritian but i think some of the circuitry might be burnt , unless the port contains the electrical components .
If i were you, i would just take everything to a respectable phone-repair center they have good technicians , Good luck
EDIT: if the problem is with the port connections/soldering then replacing the port is enough

That's what I am going to do.
As this model is not sold directly here, I plan to get there with all replacement parts that might be needed and info.
I suppose I wont find anyone here (Brazil) with expertise on HOX.
I read sometime ago in here that there is a HTC repair manual in a FAQ style, this would help a lot.
Just to make a long story short.
There is no protection from a peak energy in the USB charging port.
Some tracks inside the mainboard burned being reparation.
The device worked connected to the USB but dont charge the battery.

[Q] Docking station broken, is it repairable?

Hi,
My made-in-china docking station has just arrived, unfortunately its already been broken (quality material of a matchbox :\),
I have plugged in my micro usb into the socket (female micro usb on the dock) and somehow after few tests the female receiver of the dock fell out.. (I guess it wasn't glued strong enough because I haven't use any extra power to push it in)
Any way.. I have opened it up to see whats going on and found this:
http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/9554/a84p.jpg
The small piece on the left is the female micro usb plugger that was attached to the green board but fell off..
This is a sort of explanation:
http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/2971/4wbl.jpg
And thats the part it self:
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/8735/ew44.jpg
Unfortunately I can't glue it back and definately not weld it on since its too tiny and I don't have proper equipment for that..
But I do want to try to fix it because god damn its 1 day old ! totally brand new!
So I was thinking maybe I should simply tear a cable and plug the + - to the red and black wires at the end of that board..
And so, here comes the question for you expert fellers.
First this is the board:
http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/8915/xo1u.jpg
I have a basic knowledge in electricity but its from engineering study and not from real world, so I don't really know how to read this thing..
Perhaps a better intuition than mines will help too..
Is this board necessary? What does it do? and can't it live with out it?
Why they didn't simply plug the + and - straight to the + - pins of the docking points?
Because thats what I am willing to do but I guess that "Ask the experts before you ruin it" is a helpful tip my mom taught me..
Thanks!
Jordan.
I'm curious about this too. I'm in the same boat as you: basic knowledge but not too much real world experience. So, I can't tell you what the board does, but maybe we can figure some things out and perhaps someone with more knowledge will chime in eventually.
I can at least answer (I think) why you don't just have a red and black wire going to the point where the phone docks: you have data too (assuming the dock does data as well as charge). Those are the green and white wires in USB.
Well actually I have already figured out out..
First of all there is no data..
You can't minimize 4 cables to 2, its not possible in any way..
Those two pins are for charge only..
The board is for security defense, if you plug into it something with high voltage, it shuts it down or something.. Or transfor only the needed voltage and ampher (5v and 1A for me)..
Any way I cutted out that board and opened up a micro usb cable on the microusb side, attatched the red (+) to the dock's red and the brown (could also be white blue or somwthing, check it out to be sure) to the dock's white (-), closed every thing nice and tight, plugged the usb to charger with 1 ampher output, and it worked..
My phone is getting charged nicely and showing up Docking signal as well..
I'm not sure what exactly this board does and if its useless or not, but it sure ain't must..
Good luck!

Makes sense. I kind of expected there to be no data (hence why I made the comment about it ) Glad you figured it out!

[Q] a BRAND NEW kind of charging problem

Before everyone starts accusing me of not running a simple search, take it easy, been done. And yet, nothing to help me on the matter.
So here's the thing:
Her phone won't charge. Not when plugged into the wall, BUT when I plug her phone into the computer it is recognized and allows file transfer and everything, but just that - it still won't charge.
Here's what I've found out so far:
- Not a problem with the charger: I'm using the original charger, and it works flawlessly on my own Gnex running PA 4.4
- Nothing wrong with the battery: swap batteries between phones, my phone works fine with her battery, her phone still won't charge.
- When her phone is completely OFF and I plug it in to my PC, it plays the sound of connecting and disconnecting a device, and prompts that it doesn't recognize the USB device. If I tap the power button for a second while it's off (not holding it long enough for it to turn on), it does the same thing connecting-then-disconnecting sounds and "doesn't recognize the USB device".
So - has anyone ever run into this problem before? Know how to fix it? I know the chances are it's just a hardware malfunction, but it's weird because of the ability to transfer files- usually the problem is the reverse.
In the meantime we're using my phone as a charger for both batteries untill we get the spares and wall charger we ordered, but it's a real pain.
Just trying to find a better solution than taking apart the phone and try and fix it or just ordering a new Nexus 5 (which is tempting, but don't really have the money to spend on it...)

Its the micro USB port the pins are bent homie.
Some pins allow charging some allow data transfer. The ones for charging are damaged in your case.
Sorry to bring bad news.

Yup. Just this moment after a really really really close examination of the port and comparing it to my own phone, one tiny half a millimeter peice of metal is bent out of place and broken. Gotta order a new port ASAP and try and change it.
Thanks mate!
But hey, look at the bright side... a fun home project to immerse myself in instead of prepare for my finals!

Back with worse news. Just replaced my wife's micro USB port on her i9250 GNex, and.... same thing. Still won't charge, computer recognizes it. Now I'm completely baffled. Thought for a moment that maybe I had been such a fool as to have put back in the old port, but unfortunately, it wasn't my stupidity.
Ideas, anyone?

[Q] Charging Port issue

I am having this issue on my phone where my phone is not charging when i plug in USB cable. Only after i adjust the wire by moving it to the side it starts charging. And on top of that it frequently stops charging and i've to readjust it which is really annoying.
On searching i found this might be an issue of loose USB port.
So i called up HTC and they are like they will need atleast 20-25 days to repair the phone and they will be replacing the whole motherboard to fix this issue. Since my phone is not in warranty and HTC is charging very high plus lot of time , is there anything else i can do to fix the issue ?
i tried cleaning usb port with toothpick to filter out any dirt but no difference.
Have you tried another cable? I've had a couple of them would cause the same issue. I'd use a different cable and the phone charged fine. It may well be you have a problem with the port but if you haven't tried a different cable, it might be worth trying. It might surprise you.

Try another cable. Worst case scenario, the charging port board can be changed separately. It's available online for about 15 dollars at etradesupply.
