[Q] Nandroid Backup?

Is it possible to have a rooted device, use nandroid to make a backup, revert to stock/unroot, and then restore data from that backup? Can you even use the backup after you unroot?

never tried that - although I do not see why not
odin back to factory reset
you will need to odin clockwork recovery as stock recovery will not work
three finger startup to Clockwork
then go to restore - advanced - pick the file and restore data only
I just learned about advanced restore recently but have not done what you ask
If it does not work you can restore to where you were with no harm done
remember that titanium backup only works with root access.

If you're stock then you won't have the recovery needed to do a restore from the nand backup.

Yes, you would have to have clockwork recovery installed also though. Then just odin back to one of the stock images. Then later re root and reinstall clockwork and restore back up.

If you are talking about EI22 and want to keep CWM as a recovery to be able to restore said backup then you will need a custom kernel anyway so that the stock recovery doesn't keep overwriting CWM. What is the reason why you want to do this?

I screwed up my phone a while back with the crappy samsung cable that comes with it. Ever since it has been slower and my pc won't recognize it no matter what I do. So I bought a new cable and I wanted to revert to stock to try and start over with the rooting and custom rom process, but I didn't want to lose all my contacts, apps, music, etc. in the process.

OK. once you root again and have CWM back on you will be able to restore everything. So Odin away to EC05 stock, one-click root, flash a GB ROM and restore your data.

Well you should always be saving your contacts to your google account, then when you sign back in it will just use your account to reload your contacts. Your music is saved to SD, so when yiou open any new music program it should search your SD and find the music. Likeness previous posts, the issue your going to have doing this is not having a custom recovery...you wont be able to restore a nand with stock recovery. I agree with previous posts, it sucks you'll lose data, but the most functional and clean way to do this would be to Odin to EC05, use the EC05 to EI22 modem zip in the development section, and flash your custom rom and kernel. If you are concerned with performance and lag, see Universeral Adrenaline Shot and Supercharger script...good Luck!

ok my phone is rooted but i wanted to know how can i make a nandroid back up of my current phone but i dnt want to install cwm and i dnt want to fash via odin since i dont want to trip counter flash nut can some one help me?

For your apps and data app even system apps you can use titanium backup..find it in the market

TWRP is another option... And flash counter is no longer an issue, there is an app that zeros out any flash counts. (triangle away)

You can also flash a recovery with Mobile ODIN. It is not supposed to trip the flash counter. You can get the paid version in the Play store here. I believe you can also get the Lite version for free here on XDA.

First off, what root method did you use? Most, if not all, have the installation of CWM Recovery as part of the process...
You could use Titanium Backup, as some stated, but it wont create an nandroid and I think that's what you're looking for. As Nadict stated, flash counter is no longer a problem since Chainfire made the triangle away app and it'll reset the count to 0. Flashing ROMs, nandroid, etc in recovery will not trip the counter. Look for TWRP in the dev section and it'll have the instructions of how to have it installed, the easy way is to download Goomanager from the Play Store and tapping menu then "InstallOpenRecoveryScript".

Nope, it's the easy way to over write the recovery from CWM to TWRP. It's the easy way to get it without using Odin or mobil Odin, the method I gave you will not add to the flash count.
Try it, you'll like

maybe try using online nandroid from the market. It will create a nandroid backup compatible with CWM without turning the phone off. It wont restore a nandroid though.

[Q] Need to root FC09 so I can perform backup before wiping/new ROM

I need to root and run Titanium Backup and Nandroid before installing the new ROM.
Seems like most methods use a prerooted ROM that wipes out the current data.
Can somebody point me to a thread (believe me I've searched) and give me some pointers to how I can obtain root on the current stock ROM so I can do a full rooted backup before installing a new ROM?

Oh and to install cwm recovery, just download and install rom manager and install from there

You could flash CWM in odin and then flash su.zip. This will give you root on your current rom.

Help backing up my phone

Hello all Im having a bit of trouble understanding a bit of the lingo here.
is making a recovery simply a backup? everytime I read about backups its just to help them install a custom rom.
I would like to make a back-up [if that's all it is] but I dont want a custom rom I just want a simple back-up,
I have rooted my phone via "FireChain's CF-Auto Root" method. Whats the most reliable way to back up?
can I not simply re-root my phone instead as backing up? or reset it?

You're next step will be to install a custom recovery like CWM and you can get it from the market one you've downloaded the you will open the app and follow the prompts to flash the recovery after that's done then you can backup your rom

ClockworkMod is a custom recovery.
You install it with Rom Manager. Then you can make a backup directly in clockwork or using the Rom Manager menu

Im not sure I have the proper backup program installed
is it the CWM backup manager? or something else?
there I only have 2 options either to pull or push backups both of which I have no idea what they do.

See how it says backup current Rom in the Rom manager menu.
You can download Rom manager from the play store if you don't have it

What you have is just the app to help you manage backup and restore in CWM recovery, it does nothing as far as making a backup. You will need a custom recovery in place your stock recovery.
A nandroid backup take a "snapshot" of your current ROM and data.
When you restore it, it will restore your phone exactly to the point when you made the nand backup.
There's a few ways to install a custom recovery.
-Through ROM manager (CWM).
-Through Goo Manager (TWRP).
-Using Odin to flash a recovery.
-Flash a new reocvery with an existing custom recovery.
Easiest thing right now if you already have ROM manager is to use that to flash CWM recovery.
Boot into recovery to do nandroid backup or use ROM manager.
The other backup is apps and/or data backup with Titanium Backup or similar.
This tyoe of backup save a copy of your current app plus the data that is associated with that app.

Ive heard some bad things about clockwork but its fine if its the most reliable for this phone

1-Are you rooted?
2-What recovery do you want to use? Official CWM, TWRP. or Philz touch version of CWM?
3-Do you have Odin set up and working?

-The easiest way is to flash CWM with ROM manager.
1. Download ROM Manager if you haven't
2, Open ROM Manager app
3. Chose the option to install Recovery (Maybe "Recovery Setup" or something like that)
4. Let it do it's thing
5. You should now have CWM recovery if all went correctly
-You could also use Odin to flash a recovery such as
Philz Touch CWM version

I rebooted into recovery and I see it was a mistake
is there any way to undo and not be running in CWM recovery? and just go back to my rooted original version?

What do you mean by mistake? If you want to do a nandroid backup you need a custom recovery. The custom recovery doesn't affect how your ROM work and can do what your stock recvoery does plus more.
Anyhow if you want to go back to stock recovery you'll need to Odin back to stock and re-root your phone.

So all I have to do is root my phone again and itll get rid of my CWM and go back to normal?
im not sure what the feature is called but its when you hover your finger over the display and it shows more options
when I did that and booted into recovery it started going crazy for some reason, now it wiggles without me touching it
or even having my hant anywhere near it.

No you'll have to flash the stock ROM using ODIN. That will get rid of CWM and you'll have a stock recovery. After that is done you can root your phone again.
Have you tried just clearing cache and dalvik cache in recovery to solve the problem you're having with the "wiggle" thing?

question though; when I backed up my s4 with rom manager I did not erase the backup
it there anyway to access that path somehow so that I may erase it?

Just use a file manager and go to the CWM folder and delete the backup, you could delete the CWM folder itself if you have no plan of using it again.

bootloop recovery from twrp backup?

Hi all,
So I've gotten myself into a bootloop by messing with permissions/ownership in the /data/ directory. I would like to recover by losing as little data/settings as possible (I only rooted with chainfire AutoRoot anyway, so stock, rooted, ROM).
1) I have a few months-old TWRP backup, is it possible to extract what I need from this?
2) If not, what rom is my best bet to flash to recover a stock, rooted ROM, with my old data? I tried re-flashing CF-AutoRoot, but it didn't do anything...

1. Did you install a custom ROM?
2.or backup your rooted stock?
3. Did you already do a full wipe
(Data/factory reset)
4. If you didn't do step 3 but you did step 1...I would advise a dirty flash of the custom ROM that you had
4. If only step two is applicable I only see two possible routes
4.1a. Use Odin to update twrp or download a new custom stock ROM and flash that so you can boot...then try and update twrp to the newest version and then try to flash your backup to see if it was a version problem
OR
4.1b. Start from scratch but I would advise using cwm from now on. twrp to my knowledge isn't updated as frequently as cwm

I have not done a data wipe, and I would like not to...
I used CF-AutoRoot, I'm not 100% sure if this counts as flashing a custom ROM or not, it's supposed to keep stock ROM but give you SU. I have tried repeating CF-AutoRoot again, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem...
The only backup I have is of the full phone image, which I don't want to restore since it is months old and I would lose data... Is there a way to only restore selected files from the backup? So far I have restored CWM and can access an adb shell...

OK so basically as far as I know you are Sol on your original rom ....that's why I always flash a custom ROM but the data stored should still be on your internal (pictures, videos, things of that nature). your app data and accounts however is not...for example games and such...I would advise titanium backup and do a backup of all your app data at least once a week from now on

Agreed ...you are going to lose data in this case ...as you will need a restore of your old backup ..or fresh install of a new rom ...
Backups are king when playing with device roms and recoveries etcetera ..g
