ADB sideload problems? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I am trying to update to 4.4 on my Nexus 7 using ADB. Im running a completely stock Nexus 7, never rooted or changed anything. When I try to ADB sideload however, I keep getting "esignature failed" and the installation aborts. I have tried downloading the update many times and I still get the same error when I try to sideload. What am I doing wrong?

Are you running the latest adb?

The link to the nexus 7 4.4 factory image on google's website was broken, try downloading it again and sideloading, it should work.

Make sure md5 sum matches with actual file with the downloaded file

Problems

Okay here it goes. Tried out a 4.3 ROM for VZW Galaxy Nexus and it worked fine. Wanted to go back to CM 10.1.2 went to flash it and have run into major issues. Im using the SDK adb for all installs. I have everything erased and it only boots into the bootloader with the message no boot or recovery img. I have the files in my tools folder to flash back to stock 4.2.2 but when I try to flash the stock bootloader, radio, and then the mysid.img I just get errors(they fail-getting "FAILED"data transfer failure ) and the bootloader doesn't change(it displays at the bottom-bootloader displays "fastboot status download-0044d800". What am I missing? I feel like i've tried everything.

I have the latest SDK and have it updated. still having the same issue. using rev. 18.0.1 Think I may have found the problem was using a usb 3.0 port and have now gotten one step closer! omg if this works...... lol have been tearing my hair out for days. Yupp just changing the usb from 3.0 to 2.0 slot did the trick.

[Q] KitKat 4.4.2 Update fail on rooted Nexus 7 2013 Wifi

I just updated my NEXUS 7 2013 from 4.4 to 4.4.2 but after restarting, the Android version in settings still says 4.4.
I checked for updates again in System Updates menu but my device says the system is up to date.
My device is Nexus 7 2013 32G rooted under TWRP 2.6.3.1 recovery on Super SU root.
I also tried updating manually using TWRP zip update but it failed.
here's the part of the prompt during TWRP update:
Verifying current system...
"/system/bin/debuggerd" has unexpected contents.
E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/Dow...
Hope someone can help me find a solution for this. Thanks!

You will have to abd sideload the update. Do a search and you will find how to do it.

Thanks a ton - I thought I was going to have to do something a hell of a lot more time-consuming than a sideload.
And for some reason, TWRP isn't letting me sideload. ADB won't detect the tablet to allow it.
EDIT: Nevermind - evidently it was something very recent that got messed up - I returned to the backup I made after getting 4.4.1 loaded, and it flashed without issue. Yay.

You need to take the device back completely to stock for the update to work.
Wugs Toolkit is an incredible tool to do so.
http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
No, that will mean loss of time. If you use wug toolkit you can extract system.img from stock image and then flash it on your device, so that you won't have to erase anything. Anyway if debuggerd zip worked there's no need to do anything else

I was able to update my rooted Nexus 7 with custom recovery. I just had to revert my adblocking hosts file in adaway. It overwrote my recovery and lost root, so I just flashed recovery again and rerooted.

No you don't, flashing system.img and boot.img before applying the OTA patch would do the trick, without losing your data.

Cool, good to know. Many thanks! I stand corrected.

Can't updated to 4.4.2 in anyway

I've received 4.4.2 update today(with verification failed message beneath), after download I was asked to restart and install, and it redirected to TWRP(2.6.3.1 for flo), so I rebooted the system only to see the 4.4 version again in 'About System', the next time I received OTA updated with in a span of five minutes, the same problem repeated again. So I downloaded OTA zip file and tried to install though TWRP, but there was an error "Error executing updater binary in zip".
So I tried adb sideload but got an error "Device not found", So it just appears like all doors are closed for me..Please provide a solution to this
My device is unlocked as well as rooted
Are Ali in stock Rom? Did you do any modifications to your OS (like any closed xposed framework modules? And the framework itself?) Are you sure the downloaded OTA zip file isn't corrupted?

All I did was deleted some bloatware and gapps after rooting, that's it! yes it was stock rom, and the downloaded file isn't a corrupted as I downloaded the same file from different sources and tried but to no use
and now I'm in even more trouble, I deleted my google keyboard after rooting and I did factory reset now. now i cant even pass the Network setup step
I'm in the same boat. Received update, but stayed at 4.4. Have you attempted to sideload any updates
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
The OTA sent out for 4.4.2 OTA was an update from 4.4.1.
You either have to update to 4.4.1 then 4.4.2, or use twrp to flash the update file 4.4 to 4.4.2.
Sent from my Nexus 7
If you modded the system in any way, including removing bloatware you're going to have to flash the system and boot image from 4.4 in order for the ota to work

Guess you need to turn off signature verification in recovery (does stock have it)? I will flash my Nexus 7 2013 as well soon and can let you know.
---edit: Just downloaded the OTA file and sideloaded my Nexus 7 2013 without problem. No issue with signature verification (my N7 is all stock though and no root). I just followed the steps above.

but it doesn't work for me, as i mention everything on my device is stock.

You need to be on Stock Recovery to make this work, so you will not be able to do this via TWRP. I've gone back to stock myself and am still not able to update... but once I figure this out, I will report back.

Going back to stock recovery won't help. I never flash custom recovery, I only root, and 5.0.1 OTA doesn't work for me. I've seen it stated in several threads that you only need to go back to stock recovery but this is not correct, you need to have 100% un-tampered stock.

Happy, happy - I had the same trouble on my tablet, until I followed these instructions.
I couldn't update mine from its installed 5.0 factory (stock) image to 5.0.1. The OTA alert was there on my screen, but failed every time it loaded ("Error" under the little android dude). ADB Sideload on the stock recovery would fail with the "Status 7" error. Installing TWRP didn't help, either - when I tried to Sideload it from TWRP advanced section, it just said "Cannot read command" and would terminate.
I followed the instructions above, and it worked first try. I don't know what was holding it back - perhaps too many SU apps or maybe I did too many SuperSU updates? Obviously, something had corrupted the system files. No clue... I didn't lose any data or settings. I had to re-root, of course, but CF-Root makes that an easy business.
Cheers! Good luck :victory:

I was on rooted 5.0 with TWRP. I think the easiest way to get the 5.0.1 update without losing apps or data is to download the stock, rooted rom from Scrosler found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex.../rom-factory-stock-rooted-rom-lrx22c-t2960745 , use Wugfresh's NRT 1.9.9 to update the bootloader listed in Scrosler's post, and then dirty flash (wipe Dalvik and cache if you want) the 5.0.1 rom using TWRP. Painless and fast with no loss of data or anything.
