[Q] Update a ROM - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all, I am fairly new at installing ROMs on devices so this question is quite noob.
But, I recently installed the Beanstalk 4.3 ROM on my Galaxy S3 and was wondering how to update it without wiping out my current apps and data?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can occasionally flash the newer version over top of currently installed version (provided it's the same ROM)
Sometimes this will work flawlessly, sometimes you can run into all sorts problems. Most devs will always recommend a full wipe, this ensures any core changes they made will work correctly.
I recommend backing up your apps using a program like Titanium backup, and then restoring them after a fresh install. There is a free version on the playstore that will back up app data.
You can try to flash the new version over the old first to see if works well, but if you run into problems you will need to full wipe and do a fresh flash/install.

Question about updating arhd Rom.

I recently rooted and installed the arhd Rom and I love it. The Rom has just been updated and I am looking for some answers with regards to flashing this update.
I know the procedure is straight forward, however is there a way I can do it without losing my downloaded apps, data and the way I have configured my screens ?
I used an app to backup my stuff before but it did not store the data. Any help is appreciated.

If you are already running ARHD 6.1.x, you can flash the newest update on top of your current setup without any changes or losing data. No need to superwipe or anything. It's all based on the same base, the changes have been minor bug fixes or app updates here and there.
And just so we are clear, boot into cwm/EXT4 recovery and flash the updated ROM zip. Always a good idea to manually wipe cache and dalvik cache but it's all really straight forward.

updating rom

Hey,
I currently have the version 2.1.3 of a rom. A new version was release. Any way to.back up my apps and settings to have the exact same thing but with the new version?
I have done a nandroid but it wont keep the new rom and kernels and all that stuff.
I mostly want to keep my apps.
Thanks!
Titanium Backup

Well every ROM dev does it differently, but you should have no problem simply wiping cache and flashing the new version over the old (assuming its just an update to the same exact ROM).
Always nandroid backup before you do this because if something goes wrong, you want to be able to fall back to your previous setup.

Problems with fresh installed custom ROM after a few days...!!

Hi all,
I have a routed DHD and have used the advanced ace hack kit, everything went well and the root was successful.
Now when I'm trying new roms from XDA the problem is that for 1 week the rom work absolutely fine and after that suddenly it is in bootloop and then I have to change the rom.
I have tried the following roms:
1) Core Droid v9.2
2) Lee latest rom v5.1.1
3) virtuoso affinity latest build
4) bindroid
n a lot more but still having the same issue.
Right now I'm on ARHD 6.3.1
Requesting a sincere help from the dev community....!!

Hmm, strange. What about ROM internal modifications or options?
As you tried LeeDrOiD 5.1.1 you seem to have that problem not always after 1 week (cause it's not that old *g*), so what about trying this:
of course make a backup of your data
full wipe your device (you can make sure to do it right by using a full wipe script
install a new rom and fully boot it
keep running it for a day without reinstalling your preferred apps
keep installing the apps step by step and watch the system's behaviour
When installing your new ROM and setting it up again, do you restore any data by using tools like Titanium Backup? If so, do you also restore system data or apps (+ data) only?
PS: maybe edit your topic's title to something better like "Problems with fresh installed custom ROM after a few days" or so.

Apps download...have to click each one?

Not sure if this is Kindle-specific (probably not) or ROM specific, but I just installed AOKP milestone 5 on the Fire and after setting up Gapps I figured all the apps I downloaded/purchased on my rooted phone (Thunderbolt) would automatically start downloading to my tablet, as was always the case when I would try out a new ROM on the phone. I can see why that may not be the ideal thing to happen, but I wonder if after installing dozens of apps on the fire, if I choose to update the current ROM or try a new one, will I have to download them all one-by-one again?
You'd have to because when you install a new ROM they suggest you wipe user data saying apps and user installed data

After researching this further, I think that is not the case. Once one sets up GAPPS, the Google Play store should start auto-downloading everything that was originally on your device...even after data wipe and fresh ROM install.

[Q] looking to switch roms? currently running jellybomb

Im new all this rooting and rom stuff and yesterday morning i successfully rooted and inststalled the jellybomb 14.0.0 jelly bean rom thanks to qbking77's on point videos. so the question is... how can i switch which rom im running? i like the jellybeen roms and im looking to explore more to see which better suits my needs. ive heard of doing clean/dirtry instals or something of the sort but i want the best and safest way possible so i dont run into any bricking trouble. please help?
Ok, read up on how to flash a recovery
Download the rom of your choice and place it.on your sdcard. Once you do that you can install roms by booting into recovery and finding the zip for the rom you want to flash and selecting it through the "install zip from sdcard" option
Now a clean install is whenyou wipe all partitions, aka blocks of your phones memory, (details farther down) and then install the rom zip. This method minimizes the chances for problems to occur after installing
A clean flash involves:
Formatting system
Formatting / Clearing data (also known as a factory reset)
Wiping cache
Wiping / Clearing dalvik cache
Now a dirty flash is when you just flash the new rom zip over whatever you're currently rumning, without clearing anything. This method is only recommended when flashing an updated version of the same rom, and even then, the nature of some updates can require you to do a clean flash.
One more thing, DO NOT flash any roms, mods, or zips for the international version. That usa surefire way to brick your debice because the partitions are completely different.
To learn more about how android and this.stuff works, I would suggest heading over to xda,university.com
Thanks for the info. What is the best way to back everything up? I backed everything up wen I installed th jb. Rom and went to restore and couldnt find anythingband had to start from scratch.

Backup via CWM (RECOVERY) is mainly for restoring the same rom or going back to the rom you were running if experimenting, Now, can use apps such as Titanium backup to save all the other settings, apps and things. Once you flash your new rom, download it, open program and can restore your stuff that way. Personally, I'll wipe, start from scratch, sometimes i'll download an app i never use, and it just allows me to clear out the useless ones.. Happy flashing!

Yes as said above, a backup through recovery (also called a "nandroid" ) stores an EXACT image of the current state of your device. Meaning all data, all system files, all apps, radios, etc. Backing up through an app, like Titanium Backup, only backs up certain things like apps and app data
Basically, if you're trying any experimental stuff that may break your system (for example, flashing a new modem or testing to see if a certain kernel works), then a nandroid is the way to go because you can restore to an exact image of a state when everything was working
Yea I did that the 1st time and couldnt recover anything. Is there a certain way I should recover or maybe I did something wrong? Im not sure. Sorry if im sounding stupid but I cant return my phone if I screw it up so im tryin to be as safe as possible. Hopefully thats understandable

No no, its recovery
The recovery is basically something that allows you to install zips, it doesnt actually have much to do with recovering anything lol
But first do what was suggested right above me to check to see if you have a recovery installed
To get a more detailed description of what a recovery is and what it does, you can get over to xda-university and read through the "as user" section on recoveries
Think cwm has saved a few phones on here. Me I don't use a pc. Easy just with phone. If he's deleted his folder should he recoveR then it would bring that folder bk?

Well yea I kno I have a recovery I use cwm... I jus need to kno how I can actually save my phones content... I dont wanna start fresh everytime I decide to flash a new rom
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
OK titanium bkup. But don't restore all things if your backing up at lot as will save 4.1.2 4.2.1 and 4.2 2 and so on. Don't want to mix as fc will happen
