[Q] Where can I get a 1A car charger in Canada?

I bought this kit from e-bay and just got it in today, so have been trying it out on my drive from home <-> work.
The problem is, the car charger they supplied doesn't seem to be sufficient to charge the phone or at least keep its battery at a constant state when I'm using it as a GPS + Streaming music. On my drive home, I started at about 50% battery life. An hour or so later, I was down to about 35ish with it plugged in nearly the entire time. So clearly it's not pumping enough juice to the device
I was thinking of buying one of these from monoprice but I wanted to make sure it really would give me enough power. Obviously the power isn't that big of an issue, but I don't want to wait for it to ship only to find out that it doesn't help anyways.
Anyone tried the monoprice one I linked to, or one of the other ones from there? Or can suggest one to buy from elsewhere? Would greatly appreciate it, thank you!

I should mention, I have a car charger uhh splitter thing...to split the one socket into two (one for an FM transmitter, and one for the phone). Could this be a limiting factor in how much power I'm getting to the phone as well? Or should the single socket have enough power for both devices?

I got a Kensington PowerBolt from Future Shop which claims to be 2.1 amps and I still drained the battery a bit when testing the nav. Possibly not as much as you but there is still a net loss. If the charger is accurate in its power then I presume my car isn't delivering enough power.
Any car charger that supports the ipad should be well above 1.0a. Whether it delivers that is a question I cannot answer.
Im going to test direct power charging while having the nav on to see if this thing can ever charge positive while in nav mode. I wonder if that has ever been done.

I am not aware of any car charger that is 1amp. What you are looking for is pretty rare

They are a little more prevalent thanks to the ipads higher power requirements for charging.
Future Shop has a few of them available now if you want. A little expensive though at $30+. I don't see the PowerBolt anymore which is too bad since that was a slim model that barely poked out of the socket.

Belkin and Kensington make them as well. Many are now 2.1A for the iPad.
But to the OP - a 1amp charger is not going to fix your problem in most cases. You need a cable with the data pins shorted so that the phone thinks it is pulling power from something other then a USB port.
A USB port only supplies 500mA - the phone will draw a max of about 750mA; but only if it thinks it is not attached to a PC. The wall charger shorts the data connection so the phone knows to pull more current.
I purchased a dual port (1A per port) charger at target or walmart, and then a took a USB cable and cut open the cable and shorted the data wires (not red or white - but the other 2). My phone says it is charging on AC power and charging keeps up with GPS.
It is possible that you could buy a car charger with the cable built in and the circuitry set to tell the phone to draw more then the USB 500mA, but I am not sure.
But know this; if the phone does not say "AC Charging" under settings->phone-> about - like it does when the wall charger is in use; then you are only getting 500mA.

I use a 2 amp 12v to usb adapter that is use for my ecig passthrough. Charges with bluetooth, streaming music, and navigation all running but charges slowly. Something like $8 on madvapes.com

Oooo that's interesting, didn't know that. So perhaps the issue could be that my cable is not supplying enough power. Are there instructions somewhere detailing how to short the cable?

Didn't make it up - just havent looked in the last 6 months. Ur right they are pretty common now.

You're going to need to strip a cable so so that you can get to the individual wires for each pin. You want to short pins 2 and 3 together which are Data- and Data+. Normally that is WHITE and GREEN

I thought there might be a limit on how much current you can provide at any one time.
On the original subject: I've started using a different car charger, and now have it plugged directly into the socket in my car. This results in it showing up as being charged by AC power in the settings -> phone status. However, it still loses power over time instead of keeping at the same charge or (ideally) charging the phone slowly.
I'm going to see if I can get my hands on that 2A charger and modify a cable, and see what happens then.
If anyone would like to see if the same thing happens to them, the main applications I have running are:
Google Navigation
TuneIn Radio (streaming from one of the DI.FM stations, and outputting audio to the headphone jack to my car)
I have 3g and GPS on, wifi off, brightness set to auto (have also tried with it set to the lowest it goes and the highest it goes, doesn't seem to make a substantial difference. Or even if it does, there is still a net loss in battery charge.)
It's on stock rogers rom, rooted, with no lag fix. And uhhh, that's all I can think of that would be relevant.

I've got an New Trent IMP1000, which is an 11.1Ah battery pack. It can output a max of 1A, but the phone doesn't see it as an AC charger, so it only draws .5A. If I short out the two pins so that it draws more power, how will the battery life of the battery pack be? Meaning how many phone charges will I get out of it? Will it be shorter, longer, or not have an impact?

You should still get the same number of "phone charges" out from the pack...they'll just be quicker charges afaik. i.e. if the pack took 4 hours to do a full phone charge before, it may only take 2 hours now. The same amount of power is used up each time though.

There are a million threads out there about car chargers for the Atrix, but none of them concretely provide a solution because the threads are either hijacked for some stupid rant or people just post guesses and/or opinions, never facts. For this thread, if you can't provide facts, please don't post, keep it open to those with real knowledge to share.
Background:
I've tested two car chargers to get the Atrix to POSITIVELY CHARGE while using Google Navigation and so far I've failed. In all cases, both by itself and on the official car cradle, I started at 100%, the battery slowly holds its charge for the first 20 or so mins, and then it just takes a nose dive. The longest trip I've been on is 5 hrs, where on the last 30 mins, the phone just shut off, battery at 0% and unable to run Google Nav or itself.
Are there any car chargers out there capable of charging the Atrix while in use by Google Nav/Pandora/Something Resource Hungry?
Is it a FACT that once the battery reaches a certain temp, it will stop charging no matter what, no matter what the power input is (500-1000mA)?
Can the official car dock (Moto or AT&T branded) support more than 500mA since it's treated as a USB connection?
The car chargers I've tested are the Moto SPN5400 and Belkin F8Z445ttP. I've read the Belkin, while rated at 1000mA, only comes through with 500mA because the Atrix treats it as a USB connection.

fact: I run google navigation on the car charger and it either slowly charges or seems to stay at the battery percentage. I also have the 1% mod so I can see the subtle charging

What car charger are you using and its rated power output?

I use a SYBA SY-IPO20010 USB Car Charger its rated power output 600-700mA and the atrix sees it as a wall charger (i know this because i can boot into tanfar's cwm using it). it charges my phone slightly slower than the wall charger when used without the cardock. However when used with the cardock charging times are alot slower.

Charging in Moto car dock with Moto dual port usb rapid charger. Google Nav and Pandora running. Test one shows in increase in charge of 20% charge per hour. I plan to test for a longer duration to get a mire accurate reading.

I'm going to assume you mean model SJ1444A. How long is the included cable? I would hopefully assume it is longer than the USB cable that comes with the Atrix itself, but I wanted to make sure. I could not find this information on any product Web sites.

the official atrix car dock

I use an energizer charger, that comes with interchangeable ends and have never seen the charge be lower than when i started. That's with pandora, nav, etc.
forget exactly which one, but i bought it when i had my aria, and it was listed for HTC devices.

I used the Moto SPN5400 ($4 on amazon prime) and mine definitely charges still while using navi, albeit slower of course.

I use this (http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-Atrix-...317163?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item33683f64eb) with the car dock and stock car dock cable. I've had navigation and poweramp running and it will never go down in percent. Only up.

Even the crappiest of car chargers will charge, but when using a resource hungry app like you mentioned your mileage may vary (pun intended?).
I've found heat to play a big factor too. I learned this the hard way when my Atrix was scorching and I was in the US ripping home to make a deadline. GPS and Google Nav killed the battery to the point where it kept restarting. So I let it charge while turned off for a while and had enough juice to make it home and use GPS navigation. Whew! So scary because I didn't know where the hell I was and would have been screwed if I didn't get home on time.
I always try staying charged ahead of time or make sure there's a good buffer. Hopefully someone can share which charger is a better one out there. The one I use is for use with an iPhone and is just a cheap USB charger.

Im using a Nokia car charger with a mini-usb adapter (which while charging gets kinda hot by the way) and also use Aura GPS with my Atrix.
The most I've used the GPS it is for about 2.5 hours without noticing any problem whatsoever. In fact, once I unplug the Atrix, it shows 100% charge.
However here's what I think it's happening to some: If your Atrix is mounted on the screen, the Atrix will receive a huge amount of UV light (heat) even on cloudy days, maybe overheating the battery, thus preventing it to get a charge? Could that be possible?

Yes. Excess heat prevents charging. I have posted screenshots on one of the other threads showing this.

I was going to call AT&T today and ask them to send me a new car dock because I thought mine was defective. I'm glad I checked here. I've tried about 4 different car/USB chargers along with my car dock and none seem to charge it when I'm using Google Nav. I'm currently using the Kensington K33497US PowerBolt Duo. It has a 2.1 Amp side which I felt sure would change the phone...nope.
So it must be heat then that's causing the charging failure. The phone is scorching hot when I take it out of the dock. I wonder if there is anything that can be done. If I can't use the phone for navigation, what's the point of the car dock?

I've come to the same conclusion as well. The excessive heat really does prevent it from charging. I went on the same road trip to the US as before and even driving in the early morning or late night when it was relatively chilly, the phone still got too hot to charge.
I went down to about 60% charge from 100% charge using just an offline GPS navigation program. Using Google Nav drains it a little more because of the data usage. Kind of a bummer. I always make sure to go on a full charge because having no GPS in a foreign place is a bit freaky.

Here's something I've done to help the heat. If you have the dock mounted on your windshield, set your vents to come out through the defrost. This will blow cold A/C onto the windshield and dock and helps the phone remain reasonably cool.

Good tip!
I had mine mounted on the dash but moved it to the windshield as well. I normally have the windshield vent on blowing cool air anyway and I'm sure it helped.
During my previous trip I was down to around 40% at times (from a full charge). Using the offline GPS nav helped too. Some programs even allow you to change the GPS intervals but it's something I wouldn't toy with. I'd rather have accurate GPS and sacrifice battery life.
Still a bit of a bummer. Wish there were more ways to curb the excessive heat.

I wonder if it would make a difference if I took the back of the phone off when it was in the dock. I already have to take it out of the case to put it in the dock, it wouldn't be any problem to take the back off at the same time. It might help air move across the battery better....one less thing holding heat in.

I don't think it'd make an appreciable difference.
Maybe if you have a cooler in the vehicle when you're on a long trip you can lay it on that for a bit. But then you'd need to worry about water damage and condensation... bleh...

UV light wouldn't really be the cause of excess heat, IR light would be more the culprit... which is present in sunlight also.

Car charger with enough juice to keep on charging regardless of whats running?

New to the Nexus, recently purchased from the Play store. On my commute I generally am running Waze (or google navigation) and Audible with screen on auto brightness. With these running I get a slow drain. With these running on my old iPhone 4s, I would get a slow charge (unless it got hot, then it drained). I am using the same charger (capable of enough power to charge a iPad) I guess I am worried about long trips, don't want to show up with an almost dead phone...
I did flash jelly bean last night, still a slow drain this morning on the way in.
Is this just the nature of the phone?

this

the reason your nexus is still draining with your car charger is that it's only recognized as a 500mah usb, look at charging state in the settings and it will say USB. you can either mod a micro usb wire or the car charger buy connecting the two middle D pins. with this mod your nexus will recognize as AC charger that you can see in the settings.

i have the 5 dollar moto charger and it does really charge at 700mah, enough to charge while using maps, but the blue led is super bright and covers the entire circle. its very annoying at least for me to have a light that bright at night.

USB 2.0 ports are only designed to output 500mA. If you value your ports I wouldn't.

It is alway important to notice that, no charger will be able to keep the battery level or at least charge it a little bit if temperature is high and phone is hot... This is just the way Li Ion batteries are, their efficiency decreases exponentially when temperature is higher... So, sometimes charger is not the one to blame, but, the climate/sun shinning over the phone + screen on + 3G/4G + GPS = a phone that is smoking hot and a battery working in adverse conditions...

They're work ports so I wouldn't mind too much.
The truth is I don't really mind, because it does charge the phone, regardless of what I do. However, it does so slowly, and I was used to the fast charging of the iPhone. However, I've also +1 the Motorola charger in the car, it's a lifesaver. My battery never dies down in the car.

i've never modded my wires so im not sure if they are color coded. for the chargers though i didnt even use any solder just open up the casing and i just bent the two D pins on the usb adapter that were soldered to the board so that they touch. but yah thats the basic idea just connect those two lines somehow and your phone will recognize the charger as AC.

I have the motorola charger. The other day, I was getting a slow drain while using navigation. I confirmed the phone said it was charging (ac). I'm running JB. Anyone else with JB see a slow drain while using navigation with the motorola charger?

I have the motorola charger. The other day, I was getting a slow drain while using navigation. I confirmed the phone said it was charging (ac). I'm running JB. Anyone else with JB see a slow drain while using navigation with the motorola charger?

Working just fine for me, but it is a little bit cold in Brazil (about 58F, the higher the temperature, higher the battery temperature and higher the chances that battery efficiency is down the drain and/or phone just stop charging battery to avoid battery hitting dangerous temperature thresholds where it starts to degrade permanently and if temperature keep increasing, it might even explode).

I did a Palm Pre wireless charging mod on my nexus and HAVE to use a kernel with fast charge settings to get AC. Regardless of cables/chargers/whatever. Most kernels support it, and most popular kernels are running good on JB. My flavor is Trinity

After reviewing the pictures on amazon uploaded by users, I've found I have the fake version. Blah

Interesting thanks for all the info about USB charging. Does the pogo car dock charge as AC or USB? My real question is will I experience battery drain in regular conditions (the phone isn't on fire so the battery is still relatively efficient) running nav + music + random?

ONE X drains faster than it charges (GPS)..

Anyone else use their One X for turn by turn for more than an hour? On a recent trip I was on I was using my One X as my main GPS device (plugged in).. When I arrived at my destination I was amazed that my battery had been draining faster than it had been charging! Tested a few more times with the same result and I find the only way to stop it is to turn down the screen brightness to 10 where I can hardly see the screen making the GPS unusable ..
Sometimes I hate this phone..

You need a faster charger. Get one about 750-1000 mAh and will be fine.

The one x can only draw about 500 mah so anything over won't make a different

I´ve seen mine over 700 mAh. It depends of your charger.

Was having same problems... Then i swapt the charger with original one... Now it charges like a charm

I'm using a 1000 mAh charger don't ve this problem however it will stop charge when it gets over heated.

Same experience here, international HOX drains a faster than charges from car plug. Using Belkin 1A charger and original 1m cable, Im getting only like 500 mA into the device. BUT the consumption actually depends on used navigation software, some drain 1A (HTC locations), but others are not that demanding, asking bellow 500 mA. And same is for heating issue.

Yeah I'm just using Google Navigation and a 1000mah charger..
The phone does get stupid hot while doing this, so, perhaps it's overheating and not charging as mentioned previously?

All 1A charging adapters aren't created equal. Same as with cheap MHL, HDMI, and USB cables. I use my G-Tab's car adapter and have never had any issues with heat or the phone pulling more current than the charge puts out. I've used it non-stop for trips over five hours too (while using A2DP to stream music at the same time and with Vlingo InCar checking e-mail every five minutes). You might want to try a more premium adapter before pulling your hair out troubleshooting the phone.

Have some original htc charger with 2 USB ports. And still same issue as op. Drains faster as it charges. What's a more premium charger to you?

People in the car dock discussion were actually complaining about the included HTC charger. I bought some extra HTC standard U.S. USB charging adapters and cables from Expansys and one of the three was DOA. So I guess "premium" can't always be judged by brand.
Below is what I'm using. The problem with buying OEM chargers and cables is that eBay and Amazon are full of knock-offs that come in cellophane vs. manufacturers packaging. Over time I stopped buying cables and charges anywhere but places like Expansys, Clove, and Handtec. They cost more but I know they're real OEM parts and that they'll work (with the above exception); out of the box and over time.

EDIT: Duh. It's a 2A charger. I looked at the specs after I posted and looked at my actual charger to verify it. So get yourselves a 2A tablet (vs. phone) charger and I'm guessing that'll do the trick.

Like BarryH_GEG said, there are different types of 1A adaptors... I have two chargers - 1000mA generic and 1000mA HTC's charger that I've got in the package with original HTC car kit... If using generic, phone recognizes it as a USB (and charges realy slow), when using original-one It recognizes it as AC and charges as fast as when it is connected to normal 'wall plug'. So... Check in battery stats how your charger is recognized...
Of course it gets hot when charging at the same time when using GPS navigation, but it never overheats.

It's possible it's the charger, but, it's a high quality charger... I'll try swap it for a different kind and see how that goes..

just use a 1A (1000mA) charger. put your brightness not higher than 50% (prefer lower, but because of the sunlight, sometimes a bit higher than 33%)
it will even charge!
I got no problems with it
the One X can charge with 1A..
when you just use your normal inhouse charger, you've got a 1A charger, when you connect your phone to your notebook, you'll get 500mA. (0,5A)
for car chargers, look for a 1A charger, higher is useless.

I'm using the same official HTC car charger that I used with the Desire. It works perfectly, even when using Sat Nav.

The Belkin chargers will never charge an Android device at 1000mA. The D+ and D- pins are not connected together, so the Android device (correctly) assumes it is plugged into a USB port.
You either need an official HTC/Samsung/Huawei in car charger, or a CHEAP chinese/taiwan one. The big-brand ones, like Belkin, are aimed at iPhones, and are non-compliant with the USB charging standard.
It's true that the One X will charge at a lower rate when it overheats (and hence discharge if the screen is on with Google Nav running). Dim the screen, or turn it off and rely on the voice instead.

This is the one I use in my car. Make sure you have a good USB cable of course. Anker 18W Dual Port Car Charger @ $7.99.
I needed it for the same thing you do. I use navigation a lot, and stream music as well. It charges at the same rate as the stock Nexus 5 wall adapter/cable. It is still able to slowly charge the phone while using navigation/streaming.
Here is the newer updated 24W car charger for $12.99. It no longer has a dedicated Apple/Android port, but has power management/device detection. So just plug it in to either port and it should quick charge.

I use the Owl QI Charger. I have a slightly older model, but the company is awesome. The first version the phone would still drain. Without me even saying a word, the company contacted me and sent me a new faceplate so the phone is closer the the QI unit and now the phone charges while using google maps and playing podcasts over bluetooth.
Next the phone was doing ghost touching. The company sent me out a brand new charger at no charge and the problem was resolved.
I admit the QI charges slower than pluging in directly, but the phone does indeed charge and is incredibly convenient not having to manually attach a cable.

Go on ebay and search for "scosche revolt c2" I found this after looking for so many different chargers and this finally matched what a wanted, 2.1amp from each port and slim profile.
It's $9.99 from ebay and usually sells for like $20+ at besbuy/amazon

What about a decent cable that can handle a good 1.5 amps too?

I am told the Air-Dock will meet your needs, charger and cable both. I have one on order but cannot personally confirm their claims yet as I have not received it. Check out the Air-Dock post here at xda for people who have actually used it.

The included micro-usb is moderately large and while it would fit in the Google "bumper" case, it would flex it quite a bit too. So if you already have problems with some cables fitting your case, that one might not be for you.
*speaking from experience with their old model, not sure about the PowerIQ version, but it looks similar.

Got one too, along with the 40w wall charger in the past. Power IQ is interesting. It seems to max out at 1000ma on the Nexus 5 even though the chargers are capable of more.

I have some short duration data to share... with music (on device) playing and gps active (and screen on the entire time), my battery monitor recorded a drain of about -800mA. When I plugged it in to the Anker it went positive, but jumped around quite a bit: 409, 701, 611, 344, 451, 292 mA. So that got it from 77% charge to 82% in about 10 minutes. My battery temp monitor only comes on at 40^ C and it did not, so heat was not an issue.

I thought I was the only one with this problem. Rather bothersome especially driving from Stl to Florida even though eventually it is a straight shot down. playing music, gps, everything = no bueno

I was interested in getting this since I needed a really good and fast car charger but the anker 24w is more than double in price on amazon.ca. I don't think I want to drop 30 bones on a car charger.
Are there any other reliable car charger brands?

Yeah I had the same problem with the 18w at the time. I don't know why they price gouge so badly... I mean really, almost every major city in Canada is basically near the border with the US, doubling the price is ridiculous.
Luckily there was a 30% coupon I could apply at the time, so the price was only a few dollars more, but still...

I can't count the number of times I have been gouged by amazon.ca. The prices are always doubled or tripled. I usually just check amazon.com first if I ever want to buy anything. I'll check local places and Canada Computers (they usually great prices) see if they have anything similar to the anker.
