haha then you should read more on how to install a custom kernel
the boot.img is the kernel itself and the zip always contains the matching modules.

so i tryed to put a custom rom on my phone last night now i unlocked it from htcdev that went fine i was going to put slimbean rom on that failed now ive got no os i cant mount usb to computer thought clockwork mod cant get find any ruu for image version 2.17.862.2 please help !!!!!!!!!
Did you install custom recovery eg. CWM or TWRP?
If so, you can just try flashing again. Make sure you also flash the boot.img using fast boot.
You need to read all instructions carefully with a new rom!

could put a link up please
Use the boot.img file from the rom you want to flash. It will be inside the zip file if not separate.

How to update

I'm currently on stock 3.14 and got a update notification for 3.20, the only mod if done is a custom kernel. Is it safe for me to install the update, I've also got clockworkmod recovery

You need to have stock rom(boot.img) + stock recovery to install updates...

Can I just reflash them both?

Yes... You can.. But make sure your using the correct boot and recovery files to flash...
Edit: since ur on stock rom... U just need the correct recovery file... Thats it..

Not if he flashed a custom kernel too (as stated in the OP) Then he needs the stock boot.img and also the stock modules !
What's the main version number
Fastboot getvar version-main
I can make you a flashable zip for the modules. That we way you can safe yourself from restoring a full backup

I think there might be an error while installation of twrp recovery image.
Refer this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745657
And download CWM and reflash recovery and try it again. It will work.

I dont have much idea of twrp and AIO.
Refer this link for some more details about twrp and AIO.
Above link is also having details about which version of twrp work with AIO. :highfive:
The easiest way is to throw the TWRP image in your fastboot folder, change directories to access and then install it there. It really is simple.

[Q] Need Help

I Am Using Viper Rom On My Desire HD...
I Have Bootloader unlocked by htc dev method.
Now i want to flash a custom kernel.
I want to know how to flash kernel.zip in an unlocked bootloader...s-on
And Can I use Any Kernel With My rom?
And Will Flashing Kernel Format Data?
Plz Help...
Thanks In Advance.
Nope sorry, you can't flash kernel seperatly with s-on and unlocked bootloader. If you make s-off you can.

The kernel must be compatible with the ROM. Usually, Sense version and Android version need to match.

I'm sorry, is it actually possible to flash a kernel with unlocked bootloader and s-on? Before I s-offed, I could not flash New kernel via recovery, is there a way to do it other than via recovery?
Edit: I suppose if the new kernel was in boot.IMG format, then you could flash it in fastboot.

yes The Kernel In the .zip format can be flashed in two steps.
First Flash The Zip File In Recovery
Then Flash Boot.img via Fastboot, fastboot flash boot boot.img

What's the first step for?
I think the whole point of this thread was the op wants to try different kernel with existing Rom on the phone using a kernel.zip .
My original answer was if your s-on you can't flash a new kernel.
What I didn't however include is you can't do it via recovery, using a downloaded kernel.zip which was my mistake. But I would have thought that was obvious, because that was the original question.

But...what does flashing the zip do that flashing the image doesn't? Am I missing something?

According to me,The Flash Zip is required to place the files in the system directories...
It would be the same reason you have to flash the boot.IMG manually after flashing a Rom from recovery (cwm, 4ext etc) because it doesn't get flashed to the boot, same reason kernel doesn't flash via recovery. HTC unlock but still s-on doesn't allow you to mess with kernel directly or via recovery except using fastboot.
Atleast that's my understanding.
May I also add my own personal experience, I went straight to htcdev to unlock my phone, my experience with my HTC legend gave me the knowledge to do it without issue except the boot.img which through me a little. Long story short after flashing Rom and boot.img I wanted to try new kernel but it wouldn't work then I used google and found out via a different forum site the reason, which is HTC'S official unlock does not allow access to kernel with s-on....

Whenever you flash a new Rom there is a boot.img inside the Rom zip that you need to flash from fastboot.
Ok simple Exemplar or zip
I Need a link for latest Rom Cid 102
