Hi all! I'm new to the note 2 and so far I love it. Coming from the lg optimus g there is a ton to learn on here (not bashing any of the great ppl who made this phone even better) I'm just looking for advice and a direction I should go. What roms you like and why. I assume if I go cm I'll lose all the s pen features? I look forward to helping and being apart of the note 2 on xda. Thanks for all your input

Hi, welcome to the Note 2 Side of XDA. I'll show you what my phone looks like, and why I have it set up as such.
Generally you'll lose all of the Samsung touchwiz features if you move to cm or any other AOSP rom, that includes the amazing camera, advanced S-pen functionality and some of the more gimmicky features offered by TW.
I'm currently running AOSPA 3+ using the devil kernel found over on the Verizon note 2 original android section. I've got quite a few mods running as well (Xposed framework etc) but here's the rundown. I I'm particularly a fan of Paranoid Android colors, because it themes the notification bar and nav bar based on what app you're in. Being be to use Halo is a huge plus as well, along side the per app dpi options.

To gain some of the S-pen functionality back there's a few apps you can install, some need to be bought to attain full use though.
CM S-pen add on
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.cmspen
This allows an AOSP rom to detect when the S-pen has been removed and reinserted.
Note Buddy
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tushar.spen_helper
This will add S-pen sounds, an S-pen menu in the notification shade, and auto launch an app to imitate the pop up note effect.
Float note
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803284
Basically this is used in conjunction with note buddy so that when you remove the S-pen, This floating note app pops up.
As for all the other touchwiz junk, someone else will have to chime in, because I don't use TW roms. Not enough theming capability, and touchwiz is a resource hog.
Hope this helps ya out. Hopefully other people will chime in a out what rom they use and why.

All the ROMs are available in the development sections. It is a matter of preference and members are expected to thoroughly read about the software they are about to drastically alter their $700 device with. There is no "Best". The ones on the top pages are certainly the most popular. The only thing you will get with a thread like this is a list of what every user has found to be their favorite...which may not be the same as your idea of what you are looking for. Please take the time and do the research. If you have a question about a specific ROM then you are welcome to create a thread in Q&A to ask, look for a Q&A for that ROM or ask in that ROM thread after achieving 10 posts.
Thank you for your cooperation

Hi!
The title says it all, I'm interested if the Note II can handle any app in double panel view.
I use computer almost never, and having a smartphone which could view any 2 apps at a time would be so good and would be a great next phone I'll buy.
Thanks for your answers already!
Not stock. Only a handful of apps will work in multi view.
But there is a mod in dev section that allows any app to run in multiview

Only certain stock apps are available in the Multi window by default. If you need to add your own apps, there are a few methods, or you can flash a ROM that already have this feature built-in
So far, the easiest is this one, you just need to find the item name of the apps you wish to add, and use the webtool to generate a zip file to flash into your Note II (You need to be rooted)
Here's how mine looks like once I added apps that I want :

Ok, thanks for your replies. At this time I wasn't able to find the mod kylec mentioned about, and the manual method looks pretty creepy, but I'll look into it later, when I actually have the device with me. It was a big relievement to know that there is at least some way to double-panel all apps. It's sad how Samsung doesn't give us the device's full potential by standard.
Remind that even u flash unlimited multi window mod , it wont be easy to use, many apps will be stretched strangly.

I just found this on the play store guys and I think it's pretty awesome, this is the only new feature that I loved about iOS7, it's pretty handy IMO. Thought I shared it.
I'm just sharing it, I couldn't find the post where the app was born ( I'm pretty sure was developed here on xda ), but anyways, if you find the maker, thank him, and be sure to leave 5 star to promote development.
Here is what it looks like on my device.

No offence but if I wanted my phone to look like an iPhone then I'd still have my iPhone lol ... I'm sure some people will appreciate this app though, at least if/when they iron out the issues current users seem to experience with it
I actually tried this the other day and I really didn't like it. Its kind of askward since it is right by my app drawer button. So I found myself hitting that instead. Or it would do both.
I much prefer power toggles or something similar in my notification drawer. Not to mention the colors on the center are just plain ugly and don't blend well with anything.
Just my opinion!

I can't get how getting a quick settings alike will make your android look like an android, this is not a theme or whatsoever. Well I just wanted to share it, I'd never use an iPhone that's for sure but control center is way better option than both quick toggles/ quick settings on android IMO.

How dare you mention"The Phone that Shall Not Be Named!" LOL
Curious as I notice you are running a Venom ROM.
If so what benefit does this have over using the Quick Setting in the pulldown, does that not offer even more?
Nevermind, the mod took care of it....

thanks to umpal for the icons:good:
LEGEND this project by me is 4.3+ so no roms below that will be included Most of the columns don't require explanation but if you ask you'll receive a response.
Column 'Rating' shows stars acquired by voting (I take it from the thread itself, it is NOT my personal rating).
Column 'Active' wants to say that a ROM has been updated at least during two last months. After that period it gets 'NO' as a status, which doesn't mean it's a crap. Sometimes 'oldies but goldies' . (If you guys prefer different period of time write a comment and a reason, after all this thread is for y'all.)
Finally the last column called 'Problems' contains fragmentary description (the beginning) of bugs listed by OP (more info on the proper thread).
Each row leads to its thread so just click anywhere on the desired row if you want to open it.

let's make this work !

I think, giving 5 stars to all roms makes no sense. We must be more stingy when scoring, i guess

Great list :good:
I think you should check once more, which ROMs come with preinstalled gapps. I think OVERDRIVE and Cataclysm do (but Im not sure, someone correct me if not.. )
Keep it up, and make it even better and bigger :highfive:
I don't have a Note 2 but am considering. Can't do the Touchwiz thing so I'm wondering the functionality of the sPen without it.
Simple question: I realize all the TW specific features will be lost but can the sPen be used anywhere in Non-TW roms where one would use their finger?
ie Will it perform like an old stylus from Windows Mobile device days? So purely via resistive use and not software driven.
This would be plenty enough for me. But if it's completely crippled then I may have to rethink.
Thanks for any response!
Yes it works, and many ROMs have settings for the pen.
I use slim rom and it has settings to setup what happens when you swipe left, right, up, down, etc.

Performs like a normal stylus. You can also see the floating cursor for it when it nears the screen.

It will still work, but you'll lose 99% of the cool features. Touchwiz really isn't that bad. I tried running paranoid android for a few weeks. Came back to Jedi just to get the pen apps back. That's why I bought the Note in the first place!

S-Note, and the ability for the phone to tell you that you left the pen sitting on the desk when you walk away.

Aside from the ability to launch an app when the pen is removed (which can be replaced with certain apps) the double tap to open sNote, and the ability to do the lasso copy thing when you press the button is about it. And i have to say I don't really notice the loss of those 2 features.

Memo app from play store is an exact replica of S Note.

I can do most of that with GMD S Pen Gestures.
Hey guys I've had my Note 3 running on stock since last year and now I'm getting kind of bored of it. I want a ROM that either looks like stock Android (AOSP) or at least doesn't have the touchwiz look. Maybe something customizable. BUT I would like S-Pen features to work if possible (I heard they don't work on non-touchwiz ROMs). I really like pen window (the one that lets you open up apps in small windows).
Also I definitely need multi-window.
I think I am basically looking for a touchwiz ROM that looks as closest to AOSP as possible.
Any suggestions?
You could always flash a touchwiz ROM and then flash an AOSP theme to it.
I flashed this ROM and flashed this theme
Here's what it looks like:

I would just flash foreverlocos aosp theme over your tw ROM of choice.
What do you use the pen window and multi screen for? Just curious, I'm looking for ways that I could possibly use them that I haven't thought of.

I'm a college student. Sometimes I'm too lazy to bring my laptop to class, so I use my phone. I have a textbook open in one app, and notes in another. Pen window for a calculator. Works pretty well!
Another use for multiwindow is if I want to screenshot information from two apps at once.
