Before I go ahead and brick my device, would love to hear from some devs
- I am using Tmobile Note 3 on ATT network. Poor signal in LTE is killing me.
- As a last resort I am planning to flash ATT modem..
Am I being a moron.. If things go wrong, is there a getting back possible ?
Thanks
EDIT : Hurray.... I took the risk :good:
So I went ahead and flashed it using mobile odin and looks like I am getting slightly better signal... Used to get 2 bars at home, now its like 3 bars...
Speed increase is may be ??????noticeable...
This is an early report.. Will update as i will try to test at a few more places..

Where you get the ATT modem from? And do you also have the zip for the Tmobile modem? (incase you have to revert back)

Most likely after flashing AT&T modem you will end up with a soft brick
at worst or you will not be able to make and receive calls at best.
There is a good reason why none of the devs include any modem images in
their custom roms.
I would suggest not to flash any modems/radios.
If you soft brick your phone or you cannot make/receive calls the only way
to get the phone up and running is to odin flash the official stock rom which
you can find at http://SamMobile.com/
Just make sure before downloading the firmware that it's the correct model
number and baseband of the original firmware that the phone came with.
Good luck!

You would get an extra bar as I think the N900A shows 5 bars full as opposed to N900T shows four bars full. I got both and go by my DB. Similar.

Curious to learn more about this. Can you use a signal widget or other app to get some comparison readings? Might be hard to do since I imagine you don't want to go back to the T-Mobile modem. I'd just like to see how much of a gain there really is (if any). Maybe I'll try it myself.
aalupatti is there a way you can upload just the radio so I can try it my self pls thanks

Yup, Dont want to go back after this flash... But I am now consistently seeing an improved signal in bars.. I did not record the deccibels before.. ( should have done that). But I am not seeing any huge jumps in speeds..
Tomorrow at work , i will see if there is any improvement.. (Most of the the time at work i get 1 or no signal at all.. sucks....)

Well I tried flashing it with the phone hooked up to the computer in download mode with Odin and it looked like it was installing but then at the very end it would fail. Phone didn't boot loop or anything it booted right up after the fail. I put the modem file in the correct CSC bin in Odin also. Is there something else I must add or check a box thats not checked in order for it to pass the install?

No but that's what it shows in the ATT extracted files thread so I figured that's where it went? Wonder if I should try it in the AP bin? I could care less if I soft brick the phone, its a hard brick I'm worried about.

Yea, imo its not worth trading one of the best devices on the market.. if you're not getting very good battery life on a certain setup, just flash back to blazer4.1
As far as the reception goes, why would a different phone get you better reception in the same area? You would think that if your epic touch gets poor reception, all others would be in the same boat, no?

Can anyone tell me if you can run the same ROMs for these two phones. I will be getting the SGH-T999V on Wind Mobile in Canada. But I'm a little concerned for developer support for this phone, in which case I may get the SGH-T999 instead. But it would be much cheaper and easier to get it from my own carrier. So if anyone can let me know typically if the Canadian version of T-Mobile Galaxy S series phones are able to run the same ROMs, it would be much appreciated.
Hey. I just got my s3 from Videotron, it is also the v model. Personally, I would wait until the Canadian versions are out. Just this noob's opinion.
I'm also wondering this, but I've seen some posts saying how the modems of the SGH-T999 and the SGH-T999V are incompatible which means that a lot of ROMs won't be shared from the T-Mobile version to the Videotron version
Does anyone know the answer to this? pls and thanks.

You are wrong. I got my T999V from Wind canada, wiped and flashed TMOUS stock ROM right over it. Its been working solid so far.
Tried a couple of other TMO ROMs also but am a stock ROM kind of guy.
Average speed of 8Mbs download and 2.25Mbs Upload in the DC area.
I intend to flash TMOUS stock modem this weekend and see if the speed would crawl into the upper 2 digits.
IMO it is essentially the same phone w/ same internals. Only reason for getting was to stick with my grandfathered $5.99 T-Zones which works PERFECTLY with the thing.

How do I sound like one? Saying one "is wrong" Take it easy cowboy. All I stated was my experience with the phone. No need for name calling.
On a lighter note, it seems the modem are totally different thus a Tmobile modem baseband would definitely not work on a wind or Mobility variant and would render the phone unusable. In conclusion Roms could be shared but modem/radio files can't be shared. Again I am stating my experience, "no need for anyone to wet their pants"

You could've stated your experience without starting the post with "You are wrong", period and all. Try responding to someone else stating his/her experience in a real life conversation with those three words before anything else and let's see how many people would think you sound like a douche. Not wetting my pants here or anything man, just sayin' that you came off sounding like a real total douche right off the bat.
But back on topic here, as soon as someone pulls the modem files off the T999V model, I'm sure a lot of the devs will update their ROMs to be completely compatible with the WIND/Videotron variant.
The majority of roms you run into will not include a radio. So when you flash the rom your radio will remain untouched.
It will be noted in the OP for the rom if the radio is included. If its not mentioned its generally safe to assume its not included.

Just wondering if I need to update (i have a current OTA popping up) my phone before Baltimore Sprint rolls out its LTE here next weekend. I have had the phone about 2 months and I am rooted on the stock rom.
Will my phone recognize when LTE comes on in it's current state?
I haven't updated my phone and just let the past 2 updates fail.
I have read that Sprint has updated the radio's..?? LG8....?
If you guys feel I need to update....
1)where can I find the current update?
2)should I just download and flash??
3)I was having problems with CWM making a nandroid for me....."wont mount???"
Or should I just unroot the phone, install update, and maybe go with Vodoo root keeper?
Thanks guys
Current PRL 25005
No as soon as it becomes available u just need to switch to cdma/lte and u will have it
Sent from Galaxy SIII
The latest LG8 update has components that help the phone detect and retain LTE better than previous firmwares... u have two options... one leave the phone how it is and just use LTE when it goes live on ur current firmware... two go back to rooted stock tar (LEN) then just make sure u have Voodoo on ur external SD card and install it and protect root then take the next update which would be LF9 coming from factory LEN... u only need to protect root once... just go thru all the updates to LG8, restore root access then install watever recovery u want. Make sure to delete the "install recovery.sh" script in /system/etc as well as "recovery from boot" in /system before going into custom recovery so that stock recovery doesn't rewrite over ur custom one. Use a root file explorer to do this. Then ur free to install watever u want... this is the way to avoid tripping the flash counter... if ur not concerned about that then take the easier route like "root from recovery" and flashing recovery thru odin etc...

Wow, looks like I am not alone.
Yeah, Sprint has announced LTE for baltimore.....
http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...ther-communities-in-already-launched-markets/
I'm in Pasadena and my house still has almost no 3G service and no LTE. However a few blocks from my house I get full bars for LTE since early last week. I was inside the grocery store and barely had 1 bar of 3G, in the parking lot I had full LTE signal. They definitely turned on some parts of the Baltimore area. I was in Glen Burnie and had no LTE there so it's definitely spotty at best right now.
1) Yes, you do need the LG8 OTA update applied to get and hold an LTE connection reliably. That was a major reason for the relese of that update -- to fix deficiencies in the signal strength thresholds for LTE. If you need the update file and instructions, see this thread.
2) If you read Sprint's Baltimore announcement closely, you will see that it does not promise LTE coverage in the entire Baltimore area, but only in specific parts of the area. Building out all the towers is ongoing and will take time.
About updates...????
Do they build upon themselves? For example, I let the 2 previous updates try and install and fail, so I could get rid of the pop up.
For the past 2 weeks (about) i have been hitting "install later" on the current update. If I were to unroot and install this update, would there be a problem. Does this most current update build upon the 2 previous I have skipped?
So if I were to do the update posted in the link (thanks :good would I run into problems?
Man, I know these must sound like some dumb a$$ noobie questions, but I am trying to learn...sorry guys
BTW....I was in an LTE spot that others have had great connection to
Thanks

Thanks buddy!
I found a great video so far by the guy who helped me root my phone...qbking77. It was in the thread you suggested.
During the video (after install of stock recovery) his phone is showing that an update is available. Now he wants to show how to update from the external SD so he doesn't do the pop up version of the update.
Now since my phone is still showing the update.....
Do I still need the external SD method...maybe so since I don't know exactly what my update is....
I guess I should just follow the video to the T, to avoid any problems.
thanks guys

OMG I'm so jealous, that's the same speed as my effin cable internet. :crying:
It's only been 2 years since we got like 2 square miles of wimax coverage(fail) it'll be another 10 years before lte gets here. I should just move...
i was probably the only one on that tower at the time..... i usually average between 10-15 down 3- 10 up.

my phone usually gets 0 ~ 3 bars of 4G
but Tmo shows that my home has "EXCELLENT 4G signal"
so im thinking its either my phone issue or just my house
is there anyway to improve signal?
Have you flashed the latest radio?

Try the T999UVLI6 baseband... seems to be the best for a lot of people.
They say I should have a decent signal at my house, but due to terrain and tree coverage I have no signal.
However, I knew that when I switched back to T - Mobile so I had planned on using the wifi calling feature at home which solves the problem.

All of the modems can be found here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880987
There is also a handy map that you can click on to see what people report as working best in your area.

That's the best one in my area by far. It seems pretty universal from clicking around on the map that UVDLI6 is the favorite.

Just erase the cache. You don't have to do anything else. I don't even think I erased my cache to be honest. Radio images are firmware-related, not software-related so it shouldn't really make a difference.
Flash a custom rom...they come with 4g tweaks

I think you need to flash back to stock use the phone. Test it. Do some speed test and screenshots. Then root. Watch the videos make it easy for your self. Then test again. Your speed test should be close.
Backup your Lte configs in system/app/ to your external sdcard , and delete them. (This fixed a lot lte issues on my D855 G3 that i had) reboot and check your connection, if it doesnt improve put them back in /system/app. (Worth a try. Good luck) also check your apn settings and LTE Only settings in secret menu.
Check your data usage. Tmobile said I was having a tower maintenanced nearby. It was going on for three weeks til I called and said I wanted a bill credit. The next day all speeds were back up, even getting 50mps down at times.
