Need help! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

So it's been a while since I last rooted a phone. Last time I rooted my phone was back when I had my GS1.
I have the Sprint L710, hence why I'm posting here.
I believe I've successfully rooted my phone as Root Checker says so.
Anyway, I want to flash ROMs but I've forgotten how to do them now.
Is the next step installing CWM? If so, can anyone find me the thread or links on how to do it?
I've completely lost touch on how to do these things. I'm just hoping someone would be able to help me out as I type this out.
SPH-L710
4.1.2
Kernel version - 3.0.31-1130792
Thanks in advance!

If you have a new s3 then you need to use one of these recoveries, flashed through odin

New recoveries for new phones that won't mount storage!!
Other than that, the process for flashing a rom has not changed.

[Q] 4.04 update will not install on rooted Galaxy nexus help

So I am running the stock rom but have root access. the update pops up every 5 minutes to remind me to install it. I let it install and about 3 second in i get a yeild sign with an exclamation point in it. and the phone stops there. I waited for about 3 hours and nothing happened. Anybody know what I need to do here? I used Galaxy Nexus root toolkit v1.3 to root my phone. BTW i am with verizon
For as far as i now you cant update a rooted device. i sugest unrooting an try to update agian.
reply
yea that's what I thought I was going to have to do. but wanted to see if there was an update package someone had made for rooted devices like some others had.
nvm i think im going to trade the phone

Yes you can. You can't update a phone with CWM recovery though.

Correct a rooted phone can update but not with any custom recovery. You need to flash back to the factory stock recovery.

OK so looks like everyone is here was incorrect. The 4.04 rooted update is here in the XDA forums all i needed to do was flash it and the new antenna and everything is working fine now. here are the links.

Your right, stupid answers, that's not an ota update you did. That was pulled from a phone which was updated and packaged into a flashable file to use on a rooted device. But a carrier ota update as your device was asking you to update will not work without stock recovery.

Isn't that exactly what i asked for second post in? Point is if you knew that, why didn't you say so? Look there's nothing wrong with being wrong every once in a while but be graceful about it. And if your going to give advice make sure you fully read the question and offer decent advice. You were saying there was no way to update it without unrooting and flashing back to stock. That was after I asked "yea that's what I thought I was going to have to do. but wanted to see if there was an update package someone had made for rooted devices like some others had." Is that not exactly what I asked for????

Well, you are right that there are a lot of partially right and partially wrong answers in this thread. But what are you saying is not exactly right either.
1) There is a difference between updating your existing build (like what you had asked to do in the first post) and flashing an entirely new build.
2) There is a difference between running a stock ROM (like what you were running before) and running a ROM that looks like it's stock, but is not (like what you are running now).
3) Root has NO impact whatsoever on your ability to install OTA updates on your stock ROM.
4) An OTA update will NOT install with a stock recovery UNLESS you are using the stock recovery version that came with the build you are using. (It seems like a lot of toolkits are flashing non-matching stock recoveries).
5) An OTA update file can EASILY be installed if you have CWM installed. See here.
6) Your phrase "unrooting and flashing back to stock" is silly, as flashing back to stock replaces your ROM, so why would you need to "unroot" your current ROM only to flash a stock ROM overtop? You don't root a device - you root an Android OS build. The phrase "root my device" does not make any sense.

New GS3 owner, few questions

Hey everyone, I just purchased a GS3 from T-Mobile yesterday and it's great so far. I know what root, flashing roms and all that good stuff is. Now I have a few questions pertaining to this thread, I cannot post there yet, so please bear with me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687
1.) I updated the GS3 to the official JB rom via Kies. Do I need to install those drivers from this thread as Windows 7 Ultimate x64 said I installed ADB and the USB drivers and such?
2.) I know how to use Odin, but since I'm on official JB, I have read that some folks are having their counters go up from flashing the stock rooted JB rom from this thread. Is it true? Is there an up to date app that can reset the counter for the T-Mobile GS3 T999?
3.) I don't intend to flash any other custom roms at the moment, stock is good enough for me for now. When I decide to do so, will flashing CWM via the Play Store app (I have premium) cause the counter to tick upwards? Will flashing any CWM based roms afterwards cause the counter to increase?
I appreciate any help and I want to protect this phone since it cost me an arm and a leg with the insurance and such. I'm coming from a rooted Galaxy S2 that I lost during vacation and I bought the GS3 at full retail. If all else fails, in case my phone acts up, I will simply "accidentally" drop it in the toilet, lol.
1. Kies includes drivers so you should be good there.
2 & 3. Check the info/research thread linked in my sig. Everything we know so far is there, including answers to your ?s.
At the very least read the post linked in the op.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Thanks, I appreciate the direction you took me. I will research more thoroughly now that I have the info I was looking for.
Since I don't intend to flash any custom roms at the moment, will flashing the rooted stock rom with the stock recovery in the link I posted cause the counter to tick up? I see that there is an app called Triangle Away, is it up to date for us official JB users?
I just need a few more post before I can post elsewhere, for now I'm using this thread until I can otherwise.
*UPDATE*
I successfully flashed the rooted stock rom and I can confirm it is clean.

Pimp my rom un-pimp help.

Ok so I made a classic noob mistake. Rooted and flashed a few things here and there. Installed pimp my rom and tweaked the new toy. Ok now I need to update it and cant. I used the note 2 toolkit to root and unroot. And now for the mistake...I didnt backup anything. When I went to the att store to figure out why I cant update they looked at the build number and told me there was nothing I could do to update bc the device has been modified. My build number says pimped....blah blah blah. And thats why the update software wont update your device. Please help or point me in the right direction. Ive searched and cant find anything about removing it or going back to time before pimp my rom.

I think you can start a fresh if you odin back to stock. I would give that a try my brother.:laugh:
Cheers
if you want the updated ATT ROM, there's a pure stock rooted version available in the the development section. you have to be rooted and you have to have the CWM or TWRP recovery installed to flash it. most (experienced) rooted users just wait for a trusted developer to release a stock, rooted ROM with the updates. a little friendly advice: be sure you understand the consequences of your actions before jumping in and always take the time to create a nandroid-backup. next time you want to unroot, try this method and you can unroot your device with a Normal device status in 15 minute or less. hope this was helpful for you. and by all means, enjoy your phone! :fingers-crossed:

[Q] Will Verizon S4 Mini Ever Have Odin Files, Custom Recovery?

I am wondering if I will ever be able to install a custom recovery on my Verizon S4 Mini (SCH-I435). I used Kingo to root, but I don't really want to mess with the phone too much, because if I screw it up, there is no coming back from it. Do we know if anybody is working on extracting the stock Odin image files for this model?
As much as I LOVE the S4 Mini, if this model can't be hacked more than just root, I may return it for the Moto X.
Thanks.

I have all the partitions extracted but have had no luck building a Oden file. Keep getting Fail with oden.
And signature verification errors in recovery.
Tried to build recovery, but its beyond what I know how to do.
I have a Rom ready, just waiting on recovery to test it.
I am fairly new to samsung, been on HTC's for years. Ive soft bricked my first mini, so I know how you feel.
I was ok with the mini til they blocked wifi tether hotspot in the VRUAMK5 update.
I'm willing to do whatever I can to get this device going. If not, gotta move on
It seems like its gonna be a while.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
the Verizon model i435 can do a recovery to factory through the Verizon upgrade and repair app if you ever need to go back to stock.
Any news/developments on this? I'm really hoping to get CWM recovery installed.
It's hard without having adb during boot or odin to see exactly where what i have is going wrong. thinking around the bootloader method is going to do it but how is my question now cause i keep getting kernel: fail crap from knox i believe
I froze, then deleted all things knox. Here's hoping that doesn't mess my noise up.
Any updates on recovery? Sorry if this bumps a dead thread.
Hate to dig up old threads. but i have been working on some development on this device, mostly putting it on Straighttalk.
I have 2 of the same phones that are both working on Straighttalk and AT&T.
Heres where im at right now:
Rooted.
Android 4.4.2
baseband I435VRUBNE1
BUILD # KOT49H.I435VRUBNE1
SE "ENFORCING"
Now i used THIS THREAD to install a recovery onto the device (3.75 BETA Version)
all i need is someone to develop the recovery for the mini instead of the note 3...
ANY HELP?

Ok, pretty easy.
First you have to get your phones partitions right for 5.1.1.
To do it go to this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3252903
and follow the op carefully.
The instructions written in red a couple paragraphs down in the the thread has the link you need to get your phone to 5.1.1.
After that you can flash any rom in this forum you'd like.
Good luck and don't forget to give @tx_dbs_tx a big thanks (and any thing else you'd like) for the commitment and hard work he has done for us all.

thanks so much, i might have messed up i pull up supersu and it tells me "there is no su binary installed and supersu cannot install it. this is a problem!" - i dont know if i really need this, i mainly rooted jelly bean note 4 to get sd card access on my 3rd party apps and it works as is right now
also it keeps bugging me if i want to install a 150.16MB update N910PVPS4COK1/N910PSPT4COK1/N910PVPS4COK1 - should i just go ahead and install it?
other than that everything seems to be working, faster and better than before.

First of, don't take the ota just yet. Wait for comments about it first. If your on a custom rom you shouldn't be getting that update notification.
Which rom are you on when you get the SuperSU message?
If you are now up to 5.1.1 and flashed a custom rom you don't need to root.
Explain a little what you did to see if the issue can be sniffed out.

Yeah i followed the instructions in full of the thread you connected me to. im on 5.1.1 stock, i flashed the odexed version tx_dbs_tx placed on there.
i dont really flash any other rom in there that isnt stock since i know most have issues recognizing the spen
if it helps software version im on is N910PVPU4COJ6
hardware version N910P.05
the supersu message i mentioned earlier only appears if i hit the supsu app

for the full steps on what i did is
Odin flash the stock OJ6 rom tar using odin on your PC. on that step it took forever it build the library and then i just made sure i was able to connect to usb for the next step.
i went ahead and placed the downloaded sprint stock rom onto my external
went to the recovery mode i wiped my internal 3 times
then i hit the apply update on external i believe is the option i chose (the way he explained on the thread was way different from what i had, i mean the wording). i selected the sprint stock and it hung up for a while on the sprint spark, built library again and phone was as if it was brand new asking me to signin google.
it downloaded all my previous apps even the sprint crap ( i was able to uninstall those) other than updating the apps and messing around w them i really havent done much else. bluetooth works as well as texting and calls, wifi too
Well, you can be sure if @tx_dbs_tx released a rom it's darn near perfect. His roms come prerooted.
If you are still having supersu issues do a wipe and install any of his roms. They don't have issues... I've been using his roms for over a year and have found problems are usually user created.
