Ok, pretty easy.
First you have to get your phones partitions right for 5.1.1.
To do it go to this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3252903
and follow the op carefully.
The instructions written in red a couple paragraphs down in the the thread has the link you need to get your phone to 5.1.1.
After that you can flash any rom in this forum you'd like.
Good luck and don't forget to give @tx_dbs_tx a big thanks (and any thing else you'd like) for the commitment and hard work he has done for us all.

thanks so much, i might have messed up i pull up supersu and it tells me "there is no su binary installed and supersu cannot install it. this is a problem!" - i dont know if i really need this, i mainly rooted jelly bean note 4 to get sd card access on my 3rd party apps and it works as is right now
also it keeps bugging me if i want to install a 150.16MB update N910PVPS4COK1/N910PSPT4COK1/N910PVPS4COK1 - should i just go ahead and install it?
other than that everything seems to be working, faster and better than before.

First of, don't take the ota just yet. Wait for comments about it first. If your on a custom rom you shouldn't be getting that update notification.
Which rom are you on when you get the SuperSU message?
If you are now up to 5.1.1 and flashed a custom rom you don't need to root.
Explain a little what you did to see if the issue can be sniffed out.

Yeah i followed the instructions in full of the thread you connected me to. im on 5.1.1 stock, i flashed the odexed version tx_dbs_tx placed on there.
i dont really flash any other rom in there that isnt stock since i know most have issues recognizing the spen
if it helps software version im on is N910PVPU4COJ6
hardware version N910P.05
the supersu message i mentioned earlier only appears if i hit the supsu app

for the full steps on what i did is
Odin flash the stock OJ6 rom tar using odin on your PC. on that step it took forever it build the library and then i just made sure i was able to connect to usb for the next step.
i went ahead and placed the downloaded sprint stock rom onto my external
went to the recovery mode i wiped my internal 3 times
then i hit the apply update on external i believe is the option i chose (the way he explained on the thread was way different from what i had, i mean the wording). i selected the sprint stock and it hung up for a while on the sprint spark, built library again and phone was as if it was brand new asking me to signin google.
it downloaded all my previous apps even the sprint crap ( i was able to uninstall those) other than updating the apps and messing around w them i really havent done much else. bluetooth works as well as texting and calls, wifi too

Well, you can be sure if @tx_dbs_tx released a rom it's darn near perfect. His roms come prerooted.
If you are still having supersu issues do a wipe and install any of his roms. They don't have issues... I've been using his roms for over a year and have found problems are usually user created.

[Q] 4.04 update will not install on rooted Galaxy nexus help

So I am running the stock rom but have root access. the update pops up every 5 minutes to remind me to install it. I let it install and about 3 second in i get a yeild sign with an exclamation point in it. and the phone stops there. I waited for about 3 hours and nothing happened. Anybody know what I need to do here? I used Galaxy Nexus root toolkit v1.3 to root my phone. BTW i am with verizon
For as far as i now you cant update a rooted device. i sugest unrooting an try to update agian.
reply
yea that's what I thought I was going to have to do. but wanted to see if there was an update package someone had made for rooted devices like some others had.
nvm i think im going to trade the phone
So no one has an answer on this?

Yes you can. You can't update a phone with CWM recovery though.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Correct a rooted phone can update but not with any custom recovery. You need to flash back to the factory stock recovery.

Your right, stupid answers, that's not an ota update you did. That was pulled from a phone which was updated and packaged into a flashable file to use on a rooted device. But a carrier ota update as your device was asking you to update will not work without stock recovery.

Isn't that exactly what i asked for second post in? Point is if you knew that, why didn't you say so? Look there's nothing wrong with being wrong every once in a while but be graceful about it. And if your going to give advice make sure you fully read the question and offer decent advice. You were saying there was no way to update it without unrooting and flashing back to stock. That was after I asked "yea that's what I thought I was going to have to do. but wanted to see if there was an update package someone had made for rooted devices like some others had." Is that not exactly what I asked for????

Well, you are right that there are a lot of partially right and partially wrong answers in this thread. But what are you saying is not exactly right either.
1) There is a difference between updating your existing build (like what you had asked to do in the first post) and flashing an entirely new build.
2) There is a difference between running a stock ROM (like what you were running before) and running a ROM that looks like it's stock, but is not (like what you are running now).
3) Root has NO impact whatsoever on your ability to install OTA updates on your stock ROM.
4) An OTA update will NOT install with a stock recovery UNLESS you are using the stock recovery version that came with the build you are using. (It seems like a lot of toolkits are flashing non-matching stock recoveries).
5) An OTA update file can EASILY be installed if you have CWM installed. See here.
6) Your phrase "unrooting and flashing back to stock" is silly, as flashing back to stock replaces your ROM, so why would you need to "unroot" your current ROM only to flash a stock ROM overtop? You don't root a device - you root an Android OS build. The phrase "root my device" does not make any sense.

android ver 4.1.1 after updating through odin

i followed the unroot galaxy s3 thread because i accidentally pressed update when OTA update popped up on my rooted phone.
downloaded the latest android zip and updated with ODIN.
but it doesnt show 4.2 it still shows 4.1.1 android.
im a bit confused.
theres just too much **** available and i lost track of all these build numbers and updates and different programs.
i dont spend much time here anymore after i got rid of the HD2 and now im completely lost.
got other stuff to do cant afford spending 3 hours a day to stay on top of latest repackaged rom release

4.1.1 UVDLJC is the latest official firmware.
oh ok then i thought it was 4.2 for some reason
one more question that i could not understand clearly
once i root the phone again. what specific services do i need to disable to prevent the automatic OTA updates?
i disabled one service related to update but didnt see any others.
and once rooted. do i have to unroot it in order to use odin and manually install OTA update that i downloaded?
im not planning to use custom roms( spent toomuch time making them wrk on HD2 and done with that for good)
jsut stock tmobile roms work fine for me.
thanks for quick reply i was about to try flashing again since i thought that it was supposed to be 4.2 version

You don't have to do anything with ota. When next one comes out you can unroot and install the ota as long as you hav stock recovery. If you have custom recivery you can always update with Samsung kies but you would need to reroot the new ROM. Or just flash a ROM through Odin.

HELP PLZ! How to Install CM11 on AT&T Fire Phone 3.5.0

Okay, so I sat down and was gearing up to install CM11 on this well valued phone.
I loaded up:
https://www.reddit.com/r/firephone/comments/3j67na/full_guide_installing_cyanogenmodslimkat_on/
As they have the easiest directions to follow and I turned on my phone. To my surprise, the firmware I saw was nothing like the ones in the directions. My firmware simply read "Fire OS .5.0"
I clicked check for update and then it started downloading 4.6.4, which I quickly turned off the wifi to avoid any issues.
The phone is an AT&T variant which I'm using on AT&T. What is needed to load CM11 at this point?
I tried looking for methods to manually update to 4.3.1 but I hear about white screens and crashes etc.
Can anyone advise a noob on how to proceed right now? Itching to play with the phone with CM and would like to tackle this tonight if possible!
Since you are already on Reddit, did you see the thread right near the top that asks the same question:
https://www.reddit.com/r/firephone/comments/3jb2x8/installing_cm_from_fireos_464/
Doesn't sound like there is any issue installing on 4.6.4.

HI! Thanks for the speedy reply. I did see that thread but it seemed a bit risky as it was a "you gotta just try it" type of situation.
I felt the safest way wouldve been to update to a firmware that has been tried and true and then follow directions from there.
But then again, I seem to be having trouble, at least for the att version, to find a way to manually update to the firmware to the tried and true version.

Still not sure what you are worried about. I haven't seen any reports that you cannot root 4.6.4. This person even gives the exact steps:
https://www.reddit.com/r/firephone/comments/3jb2x8/installing_cm_from_fireos_464/cuogpp3
Here's what I did:
FireOS 4.6.4 (US unlocked) - Install KingoRoot - Root - Install SafeStrap - Download SlimKat, GApps, SuperSU (for root) - Reboot into SafeStrap - Factory Reset - Install SlimKat, GApps, and Super SU.
Replace SlimKat with CM11 for your question.
Here is another confirmation:

Edit:
And since you seem very nervous, here is another confirmation:

Downgrading 6.0.1 to 5.1.1

Hi if anyone can help- I'm on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 4 after 2 Note 7's and a Note 3 before that on Biggin's so I've sorta been out of the root game. I want to downgrade from 6.0.1 to 5.1.1. I am downloading the full firmware for the Note 4 from further back in this thread (N910VVRU2CPA1) and am currently on (N910VVRU2CPG2).
From what I understand, I need to do a factory reset, then go to Odin and flash the firmware. I have Odin 3.10.7 and am downloading the N910VVRU2CPA1 as we speak. I see 'hsbadr' firmwares in his thread and the PIT file TRLTE_USA_VZW.pit which I'm not sure is compatable pit file for the specific 5.1.1 firmware or the necessary pit file is included in the full firmware and can anyone tell me if these are the right steps?are these the right steps Any information would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks
@tjmethod by chance how did you process go, did you manage to root and unlock bootloader?

I bought the phone already with 6.0.1 on it and read that you cannot unlock/ root it with mm on it and can only be done after downgrading to 5.1.1 so I haven't done anything yet
I'm in the same boat...Coming from a n7. Bought a n4 on eBay...It's got 601. Want to root...Guess we need to downgrade....Is it possible?

Before you can start rooting, you'll need to be on 5.1.1 BPA1. If you're currently on 6.0.1, just download the BPA1 firmware from Sammobile, factory reset on 6.0.1, then flash BPA1 stock via Odin.

Hi thanks, I had called Samsung and talked to top tier tech support and was told that once the phone has been upgraded to 6.0.1., it cannot be downgraded. and that i need to search the rooting sites and try to find where someone has found a breach or workaround for unlocking the bootloader which will usually have a bounty but I dont know. top tier tech support has always been good. Do you think thats false it cannot be downgraded?

I am a little confused as to whether I've found the right firmwares but I've found the firmwares here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...mware-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2942937
If I am downgrading to 5.1.1. which this phone was obviously on before, I don't know what this phone was on since it currently is on the PL1 build which are not one of the two 6.0.1. builds on this page. I don't even know if that matters.. Anyway, the two 5.1.1. builds are PA1 and OK3. Do you know where any other firmwares out there that might show my current one and the previous build that it came from?

Yeah they're out there but that thread hasn't been updated recently. Basically the order after pf3 is pg2, pj2, and then cpl1. The one you want, if your planning on rooting, is bpa1. Also, as far as your question in the op about the pit file, it should really only be used if absolutely necessary. It's in case your partitions have been corrupted for some reason and you need to repartition your device.
Edit- I was going to link to those other firmwares but they are buried in the thread that your already looking in. Either way they aren't necessary for you to unlock your bootloader, you can go straight from cpl1 to bpa1.

Hey thanks for confirming all this. So all I need to download and install is the bpa1 firmware via Oden with the AP button I think- I've got a few different versions of Oden on my pc. It's been a while since I've flashed firmware on a phone but I remember it was easy. So just save my pictures, any files, etc. on the sd card, remove it, then do a factory reset or when I put the setting into usb download mode, and flash the firmware this will automatically factory reset the phone? Also earlier today Verizon has been trying to push an software upgrade. After I unlock the bootloader and install twrp then flash a rom, do I need to somehow disable the update notice. I remember having to do that once with another phone.
What rom are you on? Thanks again for the Info-

Yeah that all sounds spot on. I would definitely do the factory reset before you start, but other than that your good. To block the updates, you can uninstall the SDM apps. There are 2 of those and you'll need root to remove them, but you can disable them without root with that debloater tool. The rom I'm currently using is kind of work in progress. I have a couple stock based roms in the dev section, one is stock_plus that has a stock feel with some mods added and the other is Modest Rom that is got some grace apps added and system ui mods. You can find them here and here if you want to check them out.

Custom kernels help a lot. The problem is it's kind of slim pickings for our specific model, but some of the international kernels work well too. Oscar kernel is made for the 910v so that's probably the most reliable but if your like me, I like to use a permissive kernel and Ram kernel is not a bad choice for that though it's not as feature rich.

I really dont know the difference... from what I remember a kernel is the layer between the software and the hardware- a key component of the os. I'm guessing the permissive ones can be used for different roms or firmware? You can probably tell I really don't that much about the root game. The last time I flashed a firmware was on my note 3 after I bricked it. Then rerooted and got on to biggins rom which was great ut I never understood or learned how to use xposed. Anyway, I downloaded Modest Rom, PJ2 _STOCK .tar and am downloading cpl1_tar but I know that once I flash bpa1 firmware which puts the phone back on 5.1.1. I see your roms are 6.0.1 roms, after I flash the bpa1, will the bootloader be unlocked? If so can I then just flash the cpla1_tar or is that not a full firmware? or use one of the two 6.0.1 firmwares from where I found the cpa1? Are the kernels different from 6.0.1 and 5.1.1 and where to find the downloads?? I appreciate the tips especially coming from a develpoer and i'm happy to make a donation- I'm not sure how?
Thanks again!

Hey buddy, did you get it figured out? I broke my arm at work on Sunday and of course it's my right arm so I'm having some issues responding back on my note with one hand. I bet I've dropped this thing 20 times already.

Oh man that sucks- hopefully they gave you some good pain meds. Anyway, I havent taken th plunge yet- once I get on to 5.1.1 then twrp, I want to go on to 6.0.1 but am unsure as to what point the bootloader is unlocked or exactly what to do to upgrade to 6.0.1 once I crack the bl. I just dont want to go through the dreaded set up everything twice.

Wifi going crazy. Need some help.

I know that a lot of people are gonna say to read several other similar threads, but having gone through all of that I still don't get it.
THE SITUATION:
My Samsung Galaxy Note 2 GT-n7100 is :
1) Stock Android 4.1.2 Rooted
2) Modified with Xposed
3) TWRP (Latest, updated regularly)
4) Never been updated ever. Like never ever.
THE A-HOLE PROBLEM:
I honestly never bothered to flash anything on my note 2, since I have all the stuffs working perfectly as it is. Until the god-damn son of a gun WIFI started acting like a sissy she-dog. The problem is that the WIFI keeps on disconnecting itself and reconnecting itself automatically, wierdly enough, only when an app tries to access it. I hope everyone can understand how horrible it is, especially when you are talking dirty to your girlfriend over a whatsapp call and it keeps dropping, just like my errection.
All jokes aside, this has been driving me mad. In-case you need the details, here is what I did to solve my annoying problem :
1) Factory reset.
2) Reboot.
3) Phone works fine. Wifi works fine. Does not disconnect or reconnect. Seems like problem solved.
Then, the camel-crap happens.
4) Open Google play store, it updates. Play services updated. Need it to access the google services.
5) Open any internet enabled app.
6) Wifi switches on/off automatcally.
7) I tear my gonads off.
Side-Note : I also turned off the wifi power saving mode using *#0011#. I also made all the necessary changes in the wifi settings menu.
THE QUESTION:
Since I have never updated, my bootloader, etc are still stock. I read a thread that if I dont update the bootloader, future flashing will not work. I have no earthly clue so as to what the heck am I supposed to do.
I need some simple directions, to the point if possible. I have taken a full nandroid backup, just to be safe.
I think only a CFW now can solve this weird problem of mine. So, any help will be appreciated.
Newer roms require up-to-date bootloaders and modems. The easiest way to update both would be to flash the latest stock ROM from sammobile.com in Odin. Make sure you back up your data before flashing.

Okay. But, what about the filthy Knox ? Also, what about my root? Also, what about Knox ? Hmm, I wrote knox twice. Now, thrice.
Simply put, knox is poo. I dont want that. So, how do I get the latest knick-knacks without knox. Is it possible to flash the latest bootloader, modem etc.
Sorry for using "noobish". I hate that language too, but when it comes to 40k phones, I get a bit nervous. Hope you can help. Or someone else.
Regards,
TheBasterd.
If you flash the latest bootloader, you'll get Knox.
Personally, I have never found Knox to interfere with flashing custom ROMs.

So, here is the thing. If I go here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-2/development/rom-resurrection-remix-5-6-0-t3278709 and downloaded the ROM, did all the stuff the ROM maker says and flash it.
Without the latest bootloader and other poo, you are saying that my flash will be unsuccessful ?
That ROM will probably need an updated bootloader and modem to connect to a cell network, detect a sim, and wifi.
If you want to, you can flash the ROM and see what happens.

Hey audit, thanks for sticking around and helping me bro. I really appreciate that.
So, I took your advice and have put the ROM from Sammobile.com for the latest bootloader and the modem stuffs.
Hope that will work. Also, when I flash the ROm, wont I loose my root ?
Yes, you'll lose root but it doesn't matter if you don't intend to use a stock ROM.
