[Q] phone never shuts down - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My phone fell in water. It started behaving weird so I kept the phone in light heater.after which it started behaving well. But from that time onwards my phone never shuts down. When I pressed the power off button , it shuts down and reboots automatically. There are no random reboots in normal usage. Any hardware would have affected?

If your phone is rooted you can try Quick Boot, it has a power off option

Perhaps the turn-on circuitry is always in "on state" after the water fell on the phone...
So you probably should heat it a little bit more or the damage is just more serious and you should open the phone and clean it using the special alcohol (of which I don't remember the name right now)
I could have a look at the service manual and look how the turn on circuitry works....

Thanks.
The phone got wet on saturday and it worked for few hours then these problems occured.
Intially the battery was not charging and my microphone didnt work. I used a dryer to dry the phone After which the microphone worked and battery charged but still the reboot problem was there. The microphone worked fine yesterday but today again it has gone and reboot happens. If I switch of my phone while it is being charged my phone never reboots.
Now I got a temprory hair dryer. Will do it now. Is there any specific way to dry the phone? I usually keep the screen facing the hot hair and remove the battery too.
I am thinking of giving to a service center. Will the service center people also follow the same method?
Thanks a lot for your help.

The problem is that the service center *might* see that something went wrong by user fault....I don't know perhaps you could give a try and see what they tell you. If traces of water are not evident they might repair it under warranty....but no warranty by me that this method works
To your question "is there any specific way" well, it depends, if it is still wet put it into a bowl of rice (it helps absorbing humidity).
The point is that this problems seems to be "random" so it makes sense that some water is still in it.
Let us know!

Sure. Thanks a lot. Now my microphone is not working .If i heat my phone then it works. Like you said I am sure some water is still there. Actually I am suprised by this, I did a hell a lot of heating, not sure why the water inside it didn't go yet.
The phone is 2 years old and no warranty. Fingers crossed

Okay, so indeed it's not convenient at all to bring to to after sale service.
You could open the back cover by screws...without touching screen or so. Just back cover.

Hi ,
I kept my phone in a bowl of rice for a night but no luck. Today removed my case and I found water near the battery area. I have applied the alcohol now and kept it to dry. Attached the picture. water is there.

Hi,
Fixed my phone.. But I did a stupid thing by opening case the second time in which a small tape attached to the speaker came off.
(Near the sim card there is a gold circle). next to it there is a rectangluar film which came out the second time i opened. Don't know where should that tape go.
Can i stick the tape?

Are you referring to this tape? It appears just to be an electrostatic tape.
The Sim slot is nowhere near the speaker though, unless you were referring to something else.

Just FYI, if you can't shut it down you can always use adb to turn it off. Might have to go to adb shell and shutdown or similar command.

That is the flex cable for the physical volume control. You probably ripped part of it off while taking the motherboard off, it's common mistake if you didn't take it apart with precautions.
Here is one link on eBay for replacement part for the maguro version. Just search galaxy nexus volume flex

Water Damaged Desire, but still loads bootscreen (but stops there)

My wife dropped her phone while getting the youngest out the bath.
She brought it to me and I left it in a warm place to extract any water.
The phone now powers, surprisingly but only gets to the HBOOT menu page, I cant select anything like up / down / power etc, so seems stuck.
I suspect the ROM has been fried, at a minimum. Is the phone recoverable?
Thanks
Strip the whole phone down. (There is a tear down guide with pictures somewhere on these forums for it)
Then clean it/ leave it to try for a few hours and then put it back together and see if it boots up.
Thanks. I dont have the tools to open it and it voids any warranty that 'may' still be available.
Ive left it overnight above my PC's exhaust fan which seems to have worked. Will be trying to boot it soon enough.
If its 'stuck' at the HBOOT screen, what are my options? Seems like the hardware still works but the software may be corrupted.
Its the same as before - stuck on the HBOOT screen. The power button works, it switches on, but even once in the menu on the default which is Fastboot, it doesnt allow me to select that. The power button seems not to work in this menu.
was everything completely dry? best thing was probably not to turn it on for a day or 2.
maybe try stick it in a rice bowl or something for a least 8 hrs.. (rice can absorb water very well).
failing that send it back to htc?

I think she had powered it when it was still wet, this is probably where damage could have happened.
I believe it to be dry now - there was little sign of water and the vapour around the screen area is now gone too since sitting over my PC's warmish fan.
Question is, almost forgetting about how the damage occurred, what are my options for getting a new BOOT loader or similar loaded, knowing that the phone does not boot. Can I make a gold card and update the phone, anything else?
Many thanks.
The volume up button has started to work, I can scroll through the options - what now?
Seems if I take the memory card and make a gold card, I may be able to recover the phone or am I missing something?
It seems to be working OK again. Im not sure what I did, I tried 'recovery' a few times without much luck, it hung on the O2 flash screen.
I then got frustrated and was pushing the power button a few times, it vibrated and came back to life, complaining of a low battery.
Its charging now, running as a phone - Ill put the Sim Card in later. The only thing is why it seems to go to the HBOOT menu, even if not prompted at the start ...
Perhaps a reflash is still worth looking at, wanted to get 2.2 on anyways.
Edit - I suspect the vol down button is screwed, hence why it goes to boot screen at start and also it doesnt work when the phone is now on. Hopefully it will be fixed as the phone dries out - perhaps Ill venture opening up the phone to sort it.
Unfortunately I had a similar mishap while on vacation, I was carrying my phone while crossing a stream and slipped and fell down, phone got wet...
After a few days phone would power up and "work" but I noticed a few things that I could not fix:
1) Phone runs very hot - always close to 40 degrees celcius where normal phone is around 30.
2) battery will not last for more the 6 to 8 hours with almost no use. High usage / low usage makes no difference anymore.
3) If turned off battery still dies in about 6 to 8 hours.
4) The worst thing for me was the phone thought the headphone was always plugged in even when it wasn't so it was impossible to get sound out of the normal speakers making the phone unusable as a phone without a headset.
It seems if your Desire has the water sensors red under the battery your warranty is void from what I read on the forum and around the net - HTC will not fix or they will charge you the same price as a new one to fix it.
So I decided to buy a new Desire and now use the old one to test custom roms before putting them onto the other phone. I was afraid to Root before but being I had a toy phone I had nothing to lose anymore and now I am addicted
And as a bonus the Headphone / sound issue disappeared when I applied a new Radio and custom rom so that even works now. Only remaining issue is the poor battery life (replacing battery does not fix the issue).
Just thought I would share my story, I hope you have better luck then me...

Thanks for the info. I can see a red 'tag' inside the phone but on the battery itself there is a white sticker, is it either of these?
Ive gone ahead and bought a card reader and also a spare card - hopefully I can extract some value from it.

Both of those are water detectors.
Sounds like your phone has become water damaged but the battery didn't.
Your phone will now not have a warranty as a result and unless you have some sort of insurance that covers water damage (most don't) then there is nothing you can do.
Excuse the crappy pics, taken with iPhone

yeah its what I thought, the water obviously got onto the phones tag but not the battery. Your lucky as usually when the battery tag goes the battery stops working.
Phones are often programmed these days to stop working when water is detected even when the phone is actually fine (easy way to get more money I guess). So I would be quite happy its still working if I was you
I need to figure out if its the software thats screwed or if its the volume buttons. They partially worked earlier, now nothing, back to boot screen.
Going to try and create a gold card to allow me to upgrade HBOOT and take it from there.
This is one of the first phones, so should be AMOLED screen, less risk for HBOOT upgrade?
easiest and best way to sort it out would be between the two options:
-buy insurance online, wait a few weeks then claim
- try and fix it, then fail miserably and wish you just bought insurance

Dont sound like good options - ....
Dont want to curse it but its running again, down volume also working.
Ive got some of the updates on a gold card, got an error with it, not sure why but less tempted to fiddle if the phone works as normal.
I got the same problem about a week ago when i cycled and it started raining really hard. so my desire got half drowned because i didn't have a rain jacket.
At first it appear as if my phone would work normally again, because the power buttons didn't work when i wanted..
However, a week later, it feels as if nothing has happened. so keep on praying ;p
Sounds to me you really should let it dry even longer because of the fact its seems to be still coming back to life. Take off the cover, battery, sim and sd card, stick it in a rice bowl or hang it in your pc fan airflow for 1~2 more days.

[Q] Xperia Play Fuzzy / Static screen

Ok, so the battery died on my play yesterday so, as you do, I went and got the charger and plugged it in. Once it was charging I turned it back on. However, when I went to use it all I saw was this:

My first thought was to take the battery out and reboot so I did - as I was taking out the battery I saw a flash of the old screen for a second just before the power went.
Rebooted but no change.
I tried to backup and restore with the SE sofware but I couldn't put the phone in media something mode and it wouldn't allow me to.
So I reinstalled using SEUS instead, powered back on and no change.
It's really bugging me. The screen starts up with "SonyEricsson" which says to me the screen is surely not broken or disconnected, ut then I get this fuzzy / static mess and nothing else.
It's only a few months old so it's probably under warranty, but I really don't want to have to send it back - it's been less than 24 hours and I'm already missing it!!
Anyone have any ideas?
P.S. - I've also tried rebooting without the memory card and/or sim card, but no diff.

do you think it is software or hardware related. you could try WotanServer or flashtool to flash stock I think the bootloader doesn't need to be unlocked for official files.

Since the screen was showing the logo when booting, I assumed it must be a software issue - just used flashtool and it said everything was successful... but the screen is still the same - and now "SonyEricsson" doesn't come up at the start anymore...
its the screen damage or motherboard problem...i faced thr same issue..take it to sony care

i went to SE care. At first, they told me that they had replaced the display along with the flex cable. Then the phone wouldnt charge. So they changed the motherboard also. But this entire process took over a month. Was really unhappy that they couldnt identify the problem at first. But i wasnt charged any money because of warranty, so its all good. i Suggest you take it to any care center and first get the problem diagnosed. If you are paying for replacing it the motherboard , it is as good as purchasing a new phone.
Had almost the same problem when I slided my phone when it was 3 degrees Celsius "cold". I destroyed flex cable and my screen started to freeze and show random RGB pixellation.
I think it's 99% broken flex or 1% motherboard. I suggest you to give your Xperia PLAY back to Sony if it's under warranty.
Cheers.
its ridiculous I have the same problem when I unlock my phone. i emailed the company i got it from but im still waiting for a reply haven't dropped it or anything, but for now i slide the phone and have to use it like that and even then it the screen flickers a few times.

I have the same problem, just happened out of no where as the phone has been working fine. It pushed me into buying a GS3 but I still want the play for gaming. I've had mine for over a year and I bought it off ebay so I'm not holding out much hope for warranty.
It is Flex Cable. I had exact same problem, boot logo was showing like normal and then w00t.
hi everyone
same problem as every1 fuzzy screen can anyone be 110% sure it is the ribbon
as my warranty is finished and i have to do it myself
Yeah it's flex cable stuff. I had to get a new phone because of this. When you get it fixed, just start being careful with sliding your phone open.

Flex cable swapped out, Play number 1 successfully fixed. It really wasn't that hard to fix either.
same issue here.. looks like it's a very common issue with the Xplay
Ok, so after I first posted this thread, I brought my play to the nearest repair centre and had it fixed up. However, a few days ago it started back up again... Since its out of warranty ill probably just try fix it myself, but it's kinda creepy that it's almost exactly a year since it first happened...

Sorry to bump an old thread but this happened to my phone this week also. I'd like to be able to fix it myself but I have literally no experience with doing such a thing - is it a straightforward case of screwing the cover off and simply replacing the cable or is there certain pitfalls that I should avoid?
My phone is not in warranty (bought second hand) so would rather pay 20 euro for a flex cable on ebay than pay double or triple that to have it repaired.

You have to take the device apart fully, inclusive of the screen half of the Play to replace the ribbon.
Some things you should be aware of are:
- The tiny ribbon cable on the upper side of the motherboard that is connected to the Touchpads. This is EXTREMELY delicate and is an even worse pain in the ass to replace than the main flex cable.
- When putting it back together, ensure the L and R buttons work correctly before screwing it back together again.
- The flex cable is quite difficult to get through the space it's required to go through (you'll see), you have to CAREFULLY twist and turn it to get it in.
- When attaching the flex cable to the motherboard (It's quite difficult to secure it properly as it's such a small gap) be sure not to use any sharp tools or to press too hard. I've killed a new flex cable in the past by doing this.
I've had to replace the cable 7 times so far on 5 different Plays. (None of which have been my own) - Although when my friend's died and he gave it to me to repair, he simply brought a new one anyway and I kept the Play after I fixed it. xD But yeah, very common issue. No idea why it hasn't happened to me yet though. *touch wood*
Thanks for the reply Spizzy.
Hmm seems like there's quite a few pitfalls to taking this on myself - may be best to leave this one to the experts

Oh... my... god...

Sigh.
I was out burying cable for my dog's invisible fence and the only thing in my pockets was the Nexus. Once I came in covered in mud and mostly soaking wet I undressed at the washing machine putting my clothes directly in the water. Since I didn't have my pockets full with the 4 items always in them (phone, keys, knife and wallet) I didn't think to check them.
After about 10 minutes I went to make a call and immediately realized what I had done. I ran to the washing machine in the dark hallway and tore open the lid. It was exactly like the cut scenes in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when Link opens a treasure chest.
At the same time I thought "F**CK!" and "She's still alive!".
I reached into the warm, soapy, agitating water and pulled out a Nexus with a grey screen and the camera LED on full blast. I pulled the battery and disassembled the phone (surprisingly easy, btw) and went to the store for some rice.
I'll give it until tomorrow morning to dry out before I reassemble and test but I get the feeling I'll be buying a new Nexus at Verizon tomorrow.
Upsides to this incident?
-Free* spare battery.
-Spare case to try and paint and remove the Verizon logo. If all goes well I can put the new Nexus in the old case.
*Actually $649.99
UPDATE!
SHE'S ALIVE!!!!!!!
9 or so hours in rice on a heating pad under some fleece blankets and she's alive! There isn't any noticeable damage either! Both cameras are fantastic, no water or water spots under the screen, sound is good, all buttons work and the response is great as well! Charging and USB connections work fine.
Except.... I don't have any signal and when I go to make a call it says "Mobile Network Not Available"
I wonder if the SIM card is shot. I'd hate to think EVERYTHING works on my phone except the phone part... but that is how my luck generally works. I'll go to the store in the morning and get a new SIM.
Oh, how I hope it's the SIM...
So the recipe for water damage appears to be:
1) Pull battery and disassemble the phone to it's smallest parts.
2) Wipe dry with a paper towel.
3) Let it sit for about 30 minutes while you go to the store for some rice and stop at Arby's for a Beef 'n Cheddar. Optional
3) Submerge in Enriched Medium Grain Rice.
4) Seal container and place on a heating pad on its highest setting, covering with blankets.
5) Let it sit for 9 hours.
6) Get impatient. Optional
7) Reassemble.
Minor update: I took out the SIM and rebooted. It has the same error without the SIM and doesn't say anything like "No SIM Card Detected" so hopefully it is the SIM that's the problem.
My condolences. But as you said, you now have a spare battery (maybe). If I had $649 for every time I did something similar, I'd have retired before I started.
Here's hoping you get a pleasant surprise when you reassemble.
That's not a pretty sight. Shouldn't it be in the rice longer than one night, though? I've never had to do this myself yet, but I've read somewhere that you should keep them in there for a few days at least.
Best of luck whenever and however you try to reassemble it!

I measured the battery voltage at 4.01V still so it SHOULD still work. But idk about the NFC antenna and/or charging circuits.

I don't think it matters this time. It was swishing around underwater for a good few minutes at least. I figure I have to TRY to fix it but I don't see how it can't be permanently damaged.

Don't be too sure. I did something similar 2 weeks after I bought my D1 on launch day. I walked in to the Verizon store and threw myself at the mercy of the manager expecting to pay full price for a new one. The manager pulled my records up, saw how long I was a customer and ordered me a warranty replacement device right there. No charge. I did have to reuse my battery but she worked well up to the day I bought my GNex.
The manager told me that they will try to help someone as long as they don't come in and try a BS story.
You never know! Good luck to you!
Just a thought, if it's still borked after you reassemble it, you could try rinsing with distilled water and stick it in rice again. I have a feeling laundry soap residues are fairly reactive and it may not take much of a deposit to have an effect. Judging by all the leads you have on your workbench however I'd say you know your way around the voodoo of electricity.

I agree with this too.you shouldn't let the phone dry out with all the liquid soap inside. Rinse it with distilled water and then plunge it in the bag of rice

Don't throw in the towel just yet.
Something similar happened almost 2 years ago with my husband's Droid Eris.
It was just a few weeks old and along with hubby's pants it went in the washer.
A full wash cycle later I transfer the wet mess in to the dryer and hmm what is this *clink* *clink*?
Disassembled, put in rice. 2 days later the phone didn't show any signs of life, but when I put a different battery it came alive and even the few water spots under the screen disappeared eventually.
It works flawlessly, hubby uses it to this day still.
Turns out the battery actually survived as well, just needed a bit longer in the rice. It is his main battery!
Cheers!

promoting unethical behaviour on a dev forum, that's a new low...
My daughters phone went through a full cycle in the washer too, laid on the counter as nothing had happened to it (she didn't want to confess that she accidently put it in there).
I saw it on the counter and said why is there water around this phone! Of course got the I DON'T KNOW answer.
I took it apart and put it in a container with some rice with a couple of those silica gel packets, left in there for a couple hours and then covered it up.
Left it covered up for about 3 days and, it worked like a charm! Completely dried it out. Worked just fine!
IMO, 24 hours isn't long enough to dry it out completely.....
I've had this happen to me with multiple phones (the cost of having a pool), rice for about 3 days really does wonders. At the most I've had to replace LCDs or batteries. A far cry from the ~$600 for a new phone. I think my most expensive repair was an iPhone LCD for ~$85. You should be able to do the repairs with relative ease. Patience is the key...don't power on the phone for at least 3 days while it's in therice to make sure every ounce of water is gone! Otherwise you may ruin your chances of fixing it.

I put it under all my blankets in bed with the mattress pad heater (best investment ever for cold climates, btw) on high for 9 hours while I was away. I came home to a nice warm bowl of dry rice and the smell of grain. lol

I've always considered the initial water entry the cause of the damage... short circuits and whatnot. All it takes is a millisecond of water or other conductor in the wrong place to fry some of those IC's.
I've washed a USB stick (I'm not this clumsy I promise... it came off my keychain and I didn't know about it) and got it out of the dryer later, plugged it in and it still worked fine - since there was no voltage when it got wet. IC's are waterproof so once the contacts and other exposed gold/tin parts are dry it should be good to power on.
At least that's my theory. I could be way off base!
please keep us updated, good luck!

Solution for "camera black screen", "no charging LED" and "dead earphone"

Solution for "camera black screen", "no charging LED" and "dead earphone"
Hi!
My phone got several problems during the last day without any reason.
- camera shows black screen and crashes
- headphone jack does not work
- earphone dead
- no charging
I've done research via google and found several "solutions"
- change sd-card: not the solution
- wipe cache and dalvik: not the solution
- re-assembling the camera unit: not the solution
The last one i've tried fixed my problem: One of the flat connectors on the motherboard was detached.
After plug it in again, the phone works fine again.
It was not my solution, but i thought it might be helpful to poste that again
Check out this topics and the posts from "abenia":

In my case, the reason was the connection shown here(black part to mainboard, connectors not viewable on the pic): http://tjworld.net/attachment/blog/htc-desire-tear-down/DSC00156-small.JPG

Hi Sui77,
i had a look at your second link, with the back of the phone opened up. Could you please be a bit more specific of the area where the connector is (the one i have to re-attach). maybe a red circle on the picture
Many thanks

Hi!
You might laugh, but i have had to redo the fix THIS morning.
The connector popped out again without any reason, so first flash stopped working, then LED, then headset and finally cam.
Ok, i opened up the phone and fixed it.
Sadly i ave had no cam beside me.
This time i put a bit tape on the connector, so it is blocked after reassemly.
I will do that again this evening and make a small "how to" and post it over here.
If not....kick me

Keep the upper board in place, just dismount the lower one.
Dismount the one screew in the left lower corner and detach the three connectors on the right side.
Now you are able to flip the lower board with the 2 attached foil cables.
The left connector is the reason!
Replug it, put some foam or tape on its back and attach it with tape to the surrounding area.
The reassemble the device.
It's all easy and may take you 10min

Hi, I'm experiencing the same camera/camcorder/flashlight problem and would like to try this fix, but I'm a little unsure of what to do after dismounting the bottom board. I haven't tried it yet, but I get confused with flipping the lower board and what left connector I should be looking for. Is it straight forward once the board is flipped? Would either of you be able to explain this a little more, maybe with some pictures? Thanks.
EDIT: So I just decided to go for it and it was pretty straight forward. It was the black foil-wire(?not sure what you call it) connector under the microSD card slot.
heres a picture looking down from the top:
you can see the gap between the connector on the right. just had to push it in, and presto! Camera, flash and led working again Thanks!
Hi biictorr,
congrats!
As I said, it is really easy.
I have had to do that twice, because the mentinoned connector got loose again.
Now I have applyed a bit of foam tape on the connector so it will be kept in place by the pressure of the housing.
Just bought a second Desire for $50 with the same failure for business use - took me 16 minutes to repair it
a lil help ^^

I repaired my desire as well!
Hi, another Desire user in here. This was the third time I had this problem but my phone was not covered by the warranty, so I was afraid of having to pay 50-60 euro, and I even was considering getting a new phone (Desire X had been offered to me by my carrier for €99) and then, what do you know! The solution was so simple! I checked that connector and the camera works back, the LED does too, everything works! Sui77, you saved me at least €50! You're awesome!
Hi camilou,
glad to hear that.
I'm running 2 old-school desires right now and bought two defective ones for my friends.
In my opinion there is no better phone for <50€
No reason to be angry in case of a stolen'/lost/broken high priced phone
I applied a saphire camera glass (amazon) and a polarcell battery (ebay) and everything is fine.
Recommended is the spazedog ICS ROM.
Ahhhh, thank you guys for this amazing guide. By magic my camera and torch works again
Hi.
Awesome, and thanks.
My issues were: Camera black screen, headphone jack, flash and battery recharge light not working. ** Also every time I set up the portable wi-fi hotspot, my phone would reboot.
I have never torn down a phone and found it easy and effectuated the fix.
Superb advice.
Reconnected connector ok.
ps Note to forum guys - this forum could be easier to use pls.
You're welcome

help recover from after being submerged in water

Hi long story short: Phone slip from my jacket into a ice cold water cooler and spend there at least 2 minutes.
I was able to disassemble and dry it up, did a trick with usb charging and replugging the battery at the same time of powering it up and I got it working again.
The display is soaked in water still no matter how much I try to dry it using a hair dryer. So I order a new one. + a new battery just in case this ones goes bad eventually.
Now my problem is that the usb is not being recognized while plugged on a computer.
Beside this I don't know what other hidden issues it might have.
How screw am I ?
How much mileage can I get out of this phone now?
Do you have any kind of corrosion on metal contact and/or phone motherboard? If so, the only way to fix corrosion is to clean it in ultrasound bath with chemicals.
you're not suppose to turn it on until it fully dried, too late for that
you should have left it in some rice for a few days
do it now and it might still be recoverable since it seems to still work, but don't get your hopes up

it was still on when I took it off the cooler, I couldn't turn it off without using the power button and this is not a galaxy that I could remove the battery right away. I wasn't at my place and didn't have any tools with me.

Yes it can, sometimes water damage shows itself after a few hours or days (corrossion). Hope OP is lucky and there is no permanant damage :fingers-crossed:

Put the turned off phone covered in a bowl with uncooked rice asap and let it in for a day or two to extract as much moisture as possible :good:
Well it seems it is done.
First the volume button went out, then the power button. I tried and clean it again with alcohol to no avail. Send it to a repair shop to see if they can fix it since the phone is still working but can't turn it off without the buttons.
Thanks everyone that chime in. really appreciate it!
