My phone modem randomly shuts itself, I think.
My phone was broken about a month ago, no efs backup, generic imei, 00000 serial number. It was fixed by a local shop who has those "boxes".
It was formatted to the early iterations of JB 4.1.2. DMA1 I think. I then updated it through OTA to the latest version DMC3.
Then it happened. My messages would suddenly be lost. I dialed *102# in the dialer then it hangs, The signal icon would then be the circle icon like those in no parking signs after 10 sec. This method actually forces the modem to restart. Then all would be okay again like nothing happened. All messages are intact.
I flashed the stock rom thinking it would repair the problem but I mistakenly flashed Dr Ketans pre rooted rom marked XME which is for Malaysia. Flashed the proper firmware from Sammobile, XTE for the Philippines. No Signal. Restored using the efs I backed up after my phone got repaired. Emergency Calls Only. Installed Ariza Patch. Got my signal back, Imei normal, Serial Number Normal, but my Baseband Version shows Ariza_NII_[V.01].
I thought I fixed my problem but its still there. It still randomly hangs while Im texting.
Could it be a Kernel Problem? What Kernel could you suggest?
Could it be a bug in the messaging and phone app? Even for Google Play apps, it hangs, looses my messages.
Has anyone encountered such?
I would post a video if it happened again.
Please HELP!

Hi there
I am in New Zealand, recently rooted with DR Ketan’s help and installed PhilzCWM. Also on Ketan’s advice, I backed up my EFS.
My problem: just today I realised I cannot send text, or make phone call. I am on X-Note ROM from 3-4 days ago. I am very sure that after installation, I had normal Mobile connectivity and was surprised to find I didn't. Not sure if my EFS became corrupted, or other ROM setting is wrong.
Under Settings About Device:
My SERVICE STATE says Out of Service
My Mobile NETWORK STATE says disconnected.
My phone number says UNKNOWN
What's weird is
My IMEI lists a long number, assumed correct and not corrupted
So if my EFS partition is corrupted I assume I wouldn't see any IMEI at all?
Far as I know my SIM is activated (I am on a company plan & coworker's phones are normal)
Just now I restored my stock nandroid and .... same thing! No service. So I doubt it's even a modem problem.
Guys I'm screwed, any tips what settings to check etc??
sounds like your IMEI is invalid. i had something random recently. all my flatmates use iphone 4s. they had no signal when @ home. cant send texts etc. wifi works.
then next day my LTE N2 did the same thing. I changed MODEM/BASEBAND problem corrected it self. went back to old MODEM/Baseband. no problems since.
only other thing i can think of is, someone has reported your IMEI to police or your provider..
does it say "NOT REGISTERED" ? or something similar where your provider name appears?

Hey thanks for th tip.
My phone recognises Vodafone as my provider but still won't connect.
I will try flashing a different modem, I may not have paid enough attention to different versions when I flashed the aroma installer.
Thanks, I'll report back.
update: Vodafone shop confirms my SIM is 100% good, and it works in another phone. So I think you're right, my IMEI is fukt.
I was told by Voda that my proper IMEi is listed on my phone innards. The IMEI shown in phone settings is waaay different. So it's corrupted somehow. I gotta familiarise myself with how to flash my backup image. Damn just what I need on beer day Friday
I restored my backup image of EFS/IMEI - it solved my problem.
Because there was an IMEI listed in phone settings I wrongly assumed it was the correct one. So flashing ROMS can muck up your EFS.....thank god for backups
you can still use the custom roms. just if your IMEI stuffs up, there is methods to reset it. i had to do it once. wasn't that difficult but was rather troublesome. i just wanted to use the custom rom at the time.
Hi, I got a T-Mobile Galaxy S4 (SGH-M919), after a couple months the phone stopped reading SIM cards, when I checked the IMEI (*#06#) it shows as NULL/NULL and in the settings Baseband Version is unknown.
I tried reflashing my ROM but nothing helped, last week I got a new SIM card reader replacement for my phone, it worked for a day, but the next morning my phone stopped working again.
Any ideas what to do about it would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
I'm currently on KitKat 4.4.2 (the problem started while on 4.2.2).
Update:
When I clear the cache and dalvik cache, fix permissions in CWM (I'm not sure which one helps - it's a bit random), the phone starts to work again and I can make calls, but after about 15-20 minutes the phone loses any signal, when I restart I'm back to Unknown Baseband.
Sometimes I'm able to get the phone working again through EFS Professional - Fix Unknown Baseband, but then again it doesn't last long.
Hi,
I recently, flashed a bunch of different ROMS and modems to try to fix my original service issues on my T999L.
Being a noob that I am, I went from 4.2 and numerous other versions, and a couple ROMs had service, but most didn't. I thought I could fix it with flashing a new modem but that killed my service completely (IMEI null/No SIM card)!
SInce then, I flashed back to Stock ROM (using ODIN) and regained SIM recognition, but now my service sends the same text over 10 times, and I keep receiving the same texts messages. Even on wifi, I noticed that I am having issues (when I download apps it only gets to 90% and never finishes).
Does this mean I may have screwed up my EFS files? I never backed them up, and now I am in stock ROM with really strange service issues.
Will flashing a new modem help, or is this how I reached this point in the first place?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Personal my Samsung Note 2 (N7100) corrupted after an update of a ROM downloaded here on XDA.
So I restored to 4.4.1 version that caught on SamMobile, he returned to work, but the problem came with IMEI (00499 ...).
I took the OctoPlus Samsung Tool program, and restarei IMEI, did the network maintenance, and maintenance of efs, all was ok, the phone is now with the correct IMEI, the cellular network appears can use 3G internet, but it does not link;
When connecting to another number, the phone calls, I answer, the answer is muted, no communication, and after 30 seconds falls alone, and phone carrier signal falls, and then back.
I thought it was the ROM, so I put an older (version 4.3) but the problem persisted.
You have a solution for this?
I appreciate any attempt to help.

Hey guys, I was using AOSP Extended 5.8 for some weeks without issue. Worked perfetly.
Today the phone woke up without no cellular signal. The phone was very hot and battery was decreasing rapidly.
In the past weeks battery life was amazing.
I removed the SIM, rebooted the phone multiple times, wiped cache etc. Nothing worked.
Tried the SIM in another phone, radio/signal perfect.
Reverted to stock indian rom, still no signal.
Stats says the Radio's off.
Is this a hardware issue? Or can it be solved without changing parts? Why does this happen?
IMEI numbers are appearing correctly. I tried a few custom and stock roms, without luck...
When I try to call, it says it's in airplane mode. *#*#4636#*#* says the Radio's off. If I ask to turn on, it doesn't do anything.
Thanks!
Did you check whether IMEI of the phone was showing in settings> about phone? If so mostly baseband corrupt. Will have to restore EFS backup from twrp or use some IMEI wite tool to write ur original IMEI into the EFS partition.
Facing the same issue
Did u find any solution for this. I searched on zui forums and they suggested to open the back panel and heat the shielded part where the radio chip is.
