would probably be more reliable if you bought a mhl (male) to female hdmi, and female micro usb to charge. then you can just use whatever normal hdmi cable you want to use. if you start mixing lots of cables and extending etc you could run into problems. It could also work. But just warning you.
If you want to stick with the cable, just google for female hdmi to male hdmi and there's lots around.

A lot of the time cables are made to a certain specification. The HDMI Specification can be found here http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/specification.aspx
Although the HDMI Spec doesn't mention a maximum length for an HDMI cable, signal attenuation limits the length of most cables. That's why you won't find many HDMI extension cables, they just aren't recommended for any kind of quality signal use.
As for MHL (which is the cable that connects to your phone), I reckon that would suffer the same limitations as HDMI.

mini usb extender cable?

I would like to install my microphone in my car, but the cable is only about 18 inches long, and I need to run it behind the dash and up the window pillar. Does anybody know where to get an extender cable for mini usb? I have googled for hours and found all kinds of usb cables, but all the minis go from a regular usb to mini, not mini male to mini female. The other option would be to find a mic cable that is about 4 feet long to begin with.
why not get a mini male to normal male and a normal female to normal male ?
mind you usb is max 5m
about
"mic cable that is about 4 feet long "
then you have to renember it would work as a pretty good antenna reciving noise and
maybe even a fm radiostation
aaah btw when you talk about mics and usb then normal usb dont carry any type of audio
so if you're talking about extUSB as in the connector type htc invented which is miniUSB plus audio then
you cant use normal usb cables
What is the connector on the MIC?
Is it not a 3.5mm headphone style adapter? Or even the 2.5mm mini size used on my mobile phones?
If so, then why not get a splitter to split the audio out of the extUSB to a 3.5mm jack, as 3.5mm extender cables are easy to come by.
what I have is a mini usb to a mic that has a 3.5 adaptor so you can add your own headphones. The cable length is about 18 inches. a 3.5 extender cable would only extend the adaptor for the headphones, not the microphone. As for going from "mini male to normal male and a normal female to normal male" I just don't see how that gets me anywhere. My cable has a male mini usb, so to extend it I need a mini female to mini male. That suggestion seems to get me a mini male to normal male, which would work on my computer, but not extend my microphone. Keep the ideas coming. Thanks
it's extusb and normal usb cables cant be used to extend anything

normal usb cables dont have all the lower pins only extusb have those

Lapdock HDMI

I can confirm that the lapdock does indeed work as a hdmi monitor and usb mouse / keyboard, I had some spare time and tried it out.
*update*
I just spliced a USB A to a micro USB female, works great on my ps3. I just connected USB Rx Tx and ground, Don't bother connecting USB +5vdc red as it sends power up stream and may damage whatever your connecting it to.
here's a video of it in action.

I sent an email to sparkfun inquiring about a micro hdmi female breakout board and here's they're response:

Hi XXXX,
Thank you for your breakout board product suggestion. You bring up a great point about seeing this type of connection more and more. I will forward it on the appropriate people to see if this is something we can make and carry. Thank you again and have a great day!
Take care,

It'd be awesome if you could post some pictures, such as a game console or camera
So far I just connected it to my laptop by holding it. I have an adapter I bought off dealextreme that converts micro female hdmi to full size hdmi. I had to file the female side down a bit but nothing more. If I can find my hdmi genderbender then I'll post it with my xbox360 or ps3. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/hdmi-male-to-micro-hdmi-female-adapter-converter-81206
that is awesome, a female micro hdmi to female hdmi cable is impossible to find I'm sure
What kind of usb slicing is involved?

What are you using the USB for for end-use? USB hub for the ps3?
I'm not familiar with the ps3

The lapdock keyboard and touchpad work just like a normal USB keyboard and mouse. I just used a ps3 as a good proof of concept. But it'll work on anything else that has HDMI / DVI and USB. I'm going to use mine as a cheap rack controller with a KVM.
@callen81, I see there are 2 HDMI to micro HDMI connectors on dealextreme. The one you've posted is $5, and the other one is $4.10. The cheaper one also has a smaller form factor. Maybe it'll fix without any modifications. Anyway, I just wanna ask is there any reason why you've decided to purchase the expensive one? Thanks!
Here is the link to the cheaper one.

Awesome find callen81!
If I get a "Gold Plated HDMI Female to HDMI Female Adapter/Converter" (search on dealextreme) coupled with the HDMI Male to Micro HDMI Female Adapter, I should be good to go right?
@callen81: Out of curiosity do you happen to have Rock Band 2 with a Rock Band 2 Guitar? If so, I'd love for you to run the auto-calibration test on the Laptop monitor and let us know what the Video Response Time is (aka input lag). If it's under 16.6ms, then it is considered sub 1 frame lag. If you don't have this, I'll do this test myself when I get my Laptop monitor up and running and report back!

I don't have Rock Band, that HDMI micro female to HDMI male looks identical to the one I have. Looks just to be cheaper? As well I just used a hdmi female to female gender bender for a wall plate and it seems to have worked fine. A HDMI extension cable would probably be ideal.
Where did you get the female micro usb as well? FRom video it looks like the hdmi adapter takes up almost all the room so I am just wondering how hard is it to fit them plugged in at same time
Is there anyway to make an extender (female to male) for both the HDMI and USB connections? I would love to be able to use my atrix as a webcam for skype or goggle talk since the screen blocks the view of the phone when the lapdock screen is up.

I had to file both the hdmi and micro usb female plugs down a bit, far as an extension cable for the atrix itself it wouldn't work as more then usb data is sent though the usb plug.
Mac Mini?
All the more reason to pick up the dock while its being sold for $50 on ATT.
Someone should connect this to a Mac Mini and you would have your very own PAAH (Portable as Hell Hackintosh)

You should look at the pandaboards, full opmap4 dev board with hdmi.
I plan on doing the same thing.
Ordered two of the link below thanks to your testing.
hxxp://wwx.sparkfun.com/products/9614
Plan on soldering them together to make a clean adapter. (Without the +5v connected, or with to power a beagleboard using the OTG port)
Had to de-link the post b/c I'm a "new" poster... long time lurker though

[Q] connect more then one accessory via microUSB

I have been looking for a while, for a microUSB splitter cable that is male to two female. I want this so that I can connect my xperia S to the TV, with the keyboard and charger attached. The only option I can see is too get the live dock, but I don't want to waste money on that (the reviews are pretty bad and its overpriced)
are there any options I could do, anything people do to make it work?
I had an idea that I could, connect it in this way: Phone > microusb to usb adaptor > usb male to two female cable > male to male cable > charger (and also the keyboard/mouse) would this work?!

USB cable help/recommendation

Hi all,
I need a new USB cable for Android Auto in my car. Having some problems and want to start by ruling out the cables as a problem. (Pioneer have told me the cable included is not usb-C certified). It needs to be plugged into the back of the Pioneer unit which involes removing half of my car interior, so I want to buy a good cable and not have to do this again any time soon!
So it needs a 'male' end to go into the back of the unit, and a 'female' end which sticks out of my glovebox permanently. Then I'll need a second cable (a usb-a to usb-c to attach the pixel.)
Having seen all the news about dodgy cables and Benson Leung (Spelling?) approved cables I confess I'm more confused than I've ever been. Plus the options seems less with the male to female cable and I can't find any recent online reccomendations.
Can someone either tell me what I need to look for, or preferably, link me to a high quality male to female cable on Amazon UK? and of course one that's certified and will play nice with the USB-C device (my first gen pixel) that's gonna be plugged into the other end.
Getting the other cable is less of a problem, there seem to be plenty of lists online for recommended high quality usb-a to usb-c cables.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Need an extension/adapter that works with the Dex Cable

I need an extension/adapter that works with my Dex Cable so I can put it behind my all in one Lenovo instead of it sticking out the side. I bought one off Amazon (CERRXIAN 1FT Flat Slim High Speed HDMI Extension Cable A Female to 90 Degree Down Angle A Male Cord), but it doesn't work, so can anyone recommend one?
It's an HDMI in port so I guess a female (for Dex Cable) to male adapter cable (into Lenovo).
An "L" adatpter would be optimal. So it can wrap around the back of the unit.
Thanks.
DEX CABLE HMDI > HDMI ADAPTER > My Device's HDMI Port
The issue (most likely) is that HDMI is not receiving a sufficient amount of power. You should try to use a repeater. The fastest way to confirm it would be to buy it from a local store and eventually return it if it doesn't work.
