[Q] ROM and Skin most like GNex - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Hello,
Previous to my VZW HTC One, I had the VZW Samsung Galaxy Nexus with the latest version of Cyanogen Mod at the time.
I really loved the UI and overall experience (with the exception of hardware problems like terrible battery life, slow car charging, and poor hand off of the 3G to 4G radios), but again, the UI was great.
Can anyone advise a ROM that will provide a similar interface on my HTC One?
Best Regards,
Glass

There are lots of ROMs for the gnex. Which one were you using? What launcher were you using? Were you stock or rooted? Your post was kinda vague.

Edit. Read your question again. There's an official cm10.2 Rom for this phone. Have you looked into that?

Cyanogen experience - nexus phones vs Att SGS2

Love CM, and enjoy trying out new roms/builds on my phone regularly.
I just bought a SGS2 on ATT about a week ago, and after a few days running stock, i am now on the newest CM KANG build.
It runs great, but my only concern (sort of) is battery life. When flashing CM, or any non i777 rom on my phone, there are drawbacks. Its not horrible, and deifnitley something i can live with, but im wondering is the nexus phones are faced with the same issues.
For example, my standby drain when using the stock rom w/o root was about 12-15% after using it minimally for 7 hours. That same use with CM is about double, which still isnt THAT bad.
Ive never owned a nexus phone, but im wondering how CM performs, and if there are any drawbacks to flashing CM over the stock rom that comes installed on the device.
As someone who flashes a lot, and someone who is starting to get tired of troubleshooting bugs, should i consider selling my SGS2 and gettings a nexus prime?
Cm is best on nexus phones.

I've used CM on both my Nexus One and currently running it on my Nexus S. While I did enjoy it on the N1, it's been unstable on my NS.
I've maybe done one or two battery pulls when I was running the stock ROM on my Nexus S (in a 9 months period). Ever since I've switched to CM7, it seems I do about 4-5 battery pulls a week. And the battery life has been inconsistent. I'm getting ready to revert back to stock. In my case, the added features of CM7 do not outweigh the reliability I was experiencing on the stock ROM.
Once I get the Galaxy Nexus, I'll definitely rock the stock ICS build for as long I can.

hmmmm, i thought CM is just an AOSP rom that is skinned and modded, so maybe the problem isnt the incompabilties with the hardware, but that CM is actually bad on battery life itself.
The rom that nexus phones use are just AOSP roms with google apps installed right?
In all politeness to Cyanogen and G8D love him for his work on the android platform. I would never run one of his roms on my phone.
I have never really been that impressed with the actual running of the roms. They are great full featured produces but from my experience with them they have never been the best rom for a device.

No skin. Extra features. More tweaked than modded really.

Yes sir I have flashed it this morning and until now I am loving it, hope nothing comes up to change that .
Pete makes a few little changes here and there, but I've tried his ROMs since the OG droid, and I gave them a fair chance (3 day period) and I always found myself going back to other developers.
It's not so much that I had issues running his ROM, it's just the other ROMs offered much more and had better performance. I gave his bugless another chance on the galaxy nexus, and history seems to repeat itself.
gummynex and rootzboat are both superior in my opinion.

Thanks for the input! I'm running GummyNex now and loving it. I'm just interested in exploring other options.
I'm currently running Mr. Alfonso's 12/20 nightly, and it's my favorite so far...basic, solid, pure 4.03. Other than that, I've flashed (in this order):
Bigxie's Stock 4.02 rooted with added autobrightness mod - compass was broken. Facebook fonts were invisible until i deleted a couple of corrupt font files.
Revolution HD 2.1.1 - Seemed fine...felt like stock 4.02 but clearly had been poked and prodded a bit.
ODIN image with no bootloader/no wipe/no recovery - i only flashed it to get as close to stock w/ CWM as possible. not sure it was worth the effort.
rootz boat - Solid, but it was missing a few niceties from the stock rom...seemingly for the sake of aosp purity? Bleh... Google apps issues were an annoyance, and a couple of the tweaks just seemed pointless. Also, while not much of an issue, it had a terribly obnoxious default wallpaper.

Other ROM developers make a bunch of pointless changes here and there, and I've been flashing their ROMs since the venerable HTC Dream. I give them a fair chance and often appreciate their work a great deal, but I always end up going back to the ROMs that provide me with a near-stock experience boasting added stability, better battery life, and solid performance. For my wife's OG droid, there's no question Pete's ROMs and kernels were at the top of the heap for most of that phone's lifespan. For my original t-mo galaxy s vibrant, birgertime nailed it with trigger.
It'll be interesting to see what happens with the gnex. I feel like we've got a ton of top-shelf talent descending upon this device, but I'm giving Pete the early lead based on track record and my early satisfaction with the 12/20 nightly.

custom roms VS launchers

hi guys
i am a new android owner here, and i wish to ask for some assistance and maybe your opinion as well. i am currently a samsung galaxy S3 owner. and i am currently using the official firmware of this model. what is the main point of re-flashing your unit and installing a custom rom (oh and by the way which custom firmware is the best for samsung galaxy s3?). and if you are only looking for personalization, would it be installing launchers and some lock screen apps will do the job?
oh and lastly which is the best launcher available in the market place? Apex or nova?
thanks guys

If you are ONLY looking for customization, then I'd say launchers/lockscreen apps would do the trick.
The custom roms based off of stock are very similar to the stock rom. A lot of them make some improvements/tweaks/mods that make it more appealing/faster/efficient, etc. but if anyone tells you there is a HUGE difference between stock/custom I really believe that is not true. Especially on this phone. The roms NOT based off of stock (located in ORIGINAL development) are actually A LOT different. If you like the idea of natural Android you may want to check them out because it is close to the Nexus devices.
I personally like Nova, but I think Apex gets the job done too. Both have free versions so play around.
Widgetlocker is a good lock screen replacement app.
Also, if your new, and feel you do want to check out the custom offerings plenty of people will be here to help you out.

yes, and a lot of times they are a bit smoother and faster than the stock firmware.

Yes...a lot of roms claim (and some) do improve battery life. Also, some are smoother/faster than stock roms.
HOWEVER, in my experience using many roms on many phones on many carriers I would point out:
1. You WILL run into unexpected bugs using custom roms.
2. A lot of the improvements are placebo. I don't care what people say, your phone does not magically become THAT much better. An S3 running a custom rom will not blow an S3 running stock out of the water. That said, when you have a good rom dev there will be improvements. Just watch out for people who take roms and really only theme the rom and not make improvements.
I've used the AT&T and Sprint versions of the S3 for about a week each on stock roms, and I did not notice a big difference in battery life or speed when switching to custom ones. Maybe a little smoother, maybe, but my battery life has been about the same.
EDIT: What I would say is expectations need to be reasonable. Your phone will get better with a (good) custom rom, but custom roms aren't going to make a S2 as powerful as an S3, or an S3 have the battery life of a RazrMaxx. The phones performance are still primarily based on the hardware and not the small tweaks made via the roms.

Getting 1/2 the Quadrant score on AOKP, then on stock

Hello,
I just got my S4 from T-mobile and I ran a Qaud score on the stock ROM which was around 12,000. Then I just flashed AOKP and am now only getting around 6,500. Any idea why? How can I fix this?
I love vanilla Android, but I will have to go back to modded stock if I can't get the same fast speeds.
Thanks in advance,
-Jesse.
PS I would post this in the actual ROM development thread, but I am not allowed to post there since I am new =/

The best thing to do is only flash the Samsung Touchwiz Tmobile M919 4.2.2 based custom roms .
You will also find that there will be no wifi calling in any of the AOKP/AOSP/CM roms.
Have you ever heard the audio playback in videos in any of the AOKP/AOSP/CM roms?
It's so quiet that you can hardly hear it without a headset and bluetooth does not work properly.
Also the camera in those roms have about 50% of the options and features when compared to the samsung camera.
The lcd screen/user interface of the camera does not look professional when compared to to the samsung interface.
Another thing, none of the new features which are related to touchwiz and samsung will be available in those roms.
For example: smart screen, smart stay, screen mirroring, s beam, air view, air gesture, voice control and more.
Good luck!

Don't hold much in scores. They can be easily adjusted with a few build prop edits with no real bonuses to real world use.
Wayne Tech Nexus
Hi,
I Would like to explain abit more,
The Hardware in each phone is different, and Samsung (or any other brand) will write thier drivers for thier hardware parts.
when a new phone comes out, the community attend to port a clean android build for that device, but they are not always able
to write a driver as good as Samsung does, please keep in mind that most of the reference guides of the hardware are secret.
so basically, it's always takes time since the device comes out, until there is a good working version of AOSP/AOKP rom...
BUT and this is a big BUT, for the S4 device, google announced that they are going to release a version of SGS4 with AOSP on it,
probably they did a good job writing (or porting) the hardware parts for the device..
i belive that when google will release thier version of SGS4, we are going to get much better AOSP/AOKP roms.

Why so few custom roms?

Hey there.
I'm coming from Asus Infinity TF700, which was a great tablet but had disastrous storage speed, which made it virtually unusable.
On the other hand, there was plenty of custom ROMs, from CM to Paranoid, and others.
I've done some digging through Tab S forums and it seems so far only 3 custom ROMs are available, and even those are not being developed or are based on stock.
Why is that? Not many devs have Tab S? No people with know-how?
Anything esle?
Are there more custom roms to be expect in the future?
I am actually not sure when this tablet came to market, but it seems like 5-6 months now.
Thx for all the info. Oh, and if anyone could recommend a custom rom for Tab S 10.5 (WiFi only) I would appreciate it.
BR
We have cm11, skyhigh kernels, stock based rom, and blissed rom is being working on now. The best custom rom for the tab s wifi is cm11 in which im running now. Its super fast and stable.
Thanks for info.
Would you be so kind and point me to the CM11 thread - i'm talking T-800, not T-700 for which i have found a thread. But i don't think it is compatible, is it?

I've just installed cm, and it works great so far.

I dont think so. I think they are just trying to make it stable and make most things work just like stock rom.
Thanks for the info.

How About Battery Life? Is it better than stock?
I've recently discovered the awesomeness of Pure Nexus on my Galaxy S4 and I would absolutely kill to have a rom like this for my Tab S. Google edition experience is buttery smooth, incredible battery life and has really extended the life of my phone. I may try the CM11, but I really don't know if it could be better than a modified Nexus rom.

Ehh well it depends. When i installed a custom rom battery life was a tad shorter. But after a couple charges to get the battery calibrated its a bit the same but A bit better. To get more battery on cm11 what i did was underclock the cpu to 1.3 mhz and set the profile to power save. I now have six hours screen on time at 35 percent. So it may vary. If you dont change anything it would not change battery life but butter smooth.

That's truly unfortunate with the great hardware available on this device. It's what the Nexus should be!
