HTC e-mail push or pull? - Verizon HTC One (M7)

Is the HTC email push or pull? I use Gmail and looking for something that is push, but not the Gmail app as I don't like threading.

You can set it to push or set an interval for pull. I have my work email as push and personal emails as pull.

I think thats a option only available if you are using an exchange server for your mail.

You are probably correct. My work email is through an exchange server. I never tried to set up my personal accounts on push. I don't think it's an HTC limitation. I remember reading somewhere that Yahoo (for example) servers don't support true push email.
If you're trying to setup your Gmail account, did you try to set it up manually as a POP3 account? This might enable push. Just guessing at this point. I also hate the threaded setup of Gmail.

Replacement email app?

I'm coming from an evo 4g and I loved how you could edit the frequency of refreshes and have only email pushed from a day, 3 days, and etc on the sense UI.
Is there a good replacement app that does something similar to this on all email accounts? Or if the touchwiz has something similar, please point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Go into the email app, and then your account settings and check the sync schedule. You have change it there and even set it differently for peak/off-peak times. Like my work email I have it set to push m-5 from 5am-11:59pm then all other times and weekends I have it check every 4 hours. There is an option "Period to sync email" which controls how far back it pulls the email. ie.. 3 days, week, all
I don't think the stock email app "pushes" anything, just lets you choose intervals to check for email, which is why i use K-9 mail instead (despite the arcane U.I). I have 2 email accounts that support IMAP IDLE and K-9 supports IMAP IDLE push. Works great.

If you have Exchange then push is an option.
Ah yeah that's what I meant just checking the intervals. Although I don't know what the difference is between the two lol. I'll check out the k9 app though.
Thanks for the reply guys. I just realized I have to go into each email account individually to to change the interval settings. My two primary email accounts are gmail and hotmail.

You can also get normal hotmail to push. If you set it up manually as an exchange account and in the server field type in m.hotmail.com.

It isn't possible to have push email on GNEX if not using a gmail account,
this is unacceptable on a 2012 smartphone.

If you are using exchange or gmail is ok, in any other case push email is not possible on gnex using the standard email client.
Your title is a bit misleading. Ice Cream Sandwich does support PUSH for exchange and hotmail in addition to gmail. IMAP Idle is not supported.

I have Automatic (Push) on the standard email app for Hotmail and Gmail

i don't think you will get anywhere on this.
android as a OS does support PUSH notification, its all down to the software eg, gmail, k9, touchdown to utilize it.
if that software has no support for PUSH, its not android's fault.
Exchange pushed alright. Its just we don't get any notification when email arrives

just download hotmail app, or mail.com app, or yahoo app
all of them offer push mail/message notification
you just need to install them from market
is that so hard?
heck even Facebook / Twitter / etc offers push messages if you install their app
including my eBay, and PayPal and everything else
they come up faster than i get them on my PC

Probably is hard for you to understand that people who work with email generally have an email [email protected]
this means that you have no yahoo and gmail options.

If you work for a company with some email services, you obviously don't want to leave gmail to manage your emails.
In this case the gmail fetcher feature uses POP and not IMAP so it can't be considered push email. Study more before complaining about me please

What is your definition of push? Corporate works. Gmail works. Yahoo works. IMAP works. I'm not sure what other kind of "push" technology you're referring to. Other than that, POP3 is just POP3. Google can't help what technologies other email providers offer.
I think there's a huge disconnect between you and the rest of us right now, so could you elaborate?

This. If it's a POP3 email box/service you can't "use" Push with it. There's nothing to push.

The huge disconnect is because most people here don't know what push email/IMAP idle is.
Push email means that your client/server connection remains in idle, no need to connect every X minutes to check for a new email since the connection is never lost.
With PUSH email (called IMAP Idle for most email provider) you is notified on new email in real time, this saves battery also because the connection remains in idle and there is no need to create a new handshake every time.
PUSH email isn't possible with POP account but this days every email provider supports both POP and IMAP.
With ICS and previous android there is no way to do IMAP idle with a standard email since this feature is supported in gmail client only.
Do you realize that you don't need to use the factory email program to check email? There are plenty of free options in the Market (as well as SMS, dialers, etc) to replace any app you do not like.

[Q] Email in one place?

No matter where I look, I can't seem to find any one application that properly supports what I want to do...
I primarily use Gmail and Hotmail for email, and I'd like push access to both. The Gmail app supports push, but only for Gmail accounts, the stock Email app (CM9) supports ActiveSync exchange for Hotmail, but no push for Gmail. I tried K-9 mail and it supports Gmail push, but can't do ActiveSync exchange for Hotmail, forcing me to use POP3, which doesn't have push, or server sync.
Is there any single email app that will fully support both IMAP IDLE for Gmail and ActiveSync Exchange for Hotmail?
the stock mail app supports gmail push. did you try setting it up manually?

You can set up your gmail accounts in the stock email app as exchange accounts. Just do a google search for "gmail exchange setup" for directions. Then you can set them up for push.

Actually when Hotmail is set as an exchange server, it gets Push, free or not.
However, if I try to set up Gmail as exchange in the stock Email app, it says it's not a supported protocol.
I was in a similar shoe as OP.
Originally, I had multiple accounts pushed to the phone but learned that it's more efficient to aggregate all emails including work emails to 1 gmail acct. Gmail app will use the correct email address when I reply. And it saves battery.
Well I tried setting up Gmail as an ActiveSync exchange account and while it seems to work at first, it keeps reporting an incorrect username or password. I've verified both and even tried the Captcha auth step I've seen online and it keeps giving errors.

It only pushes to the gmail app. If you set up a gmail account on the stock email app, it will set it up through imap, but the app doesn't support imap idle push.
Google set up the exchange sync to deal with the iPhone, which doesn't support imap push either.

So, just to make sure we have everyone doing the same thing:
How to set up a gmail account for Exchange push:
(I am using CM9, Android 4.0.4, so the steps may be slightly different on a different rom. However, I have had thbis set-up work on stock Android 2.2 and 2.3)
Go to seetings> accounts and sync
Select add new
Select Corporate/Exchange
Enter your gmail address and password
Select next
Your phone will attempt an automatic setup. This may take a little while.
On the next screen, on the line that says domain/username enter:
gmail.com/[your username]
Now this is the most important step that gets missed most often. Ont the line that says server enter:
m.google.com
Notice that says google, not gmail.
Select next, and choose your other various preferences.
To make sure your email is set to push, go to settings for that account, and under data usage and email check frequency, select push.

Use the Hotmail app instead then, this support push notifications.
I use and would recommend "Touch down for smart phones" it is almost instant push notifications and seems to work very well i have been using it for 18 months now. The other option is to set up your hotmail to forward masks to your gmail account, this also works well.

In order to get true push email + IMAP for HOTMAIL use this settings:
Incoming settings:
Enter your email account and password Do no hit next, instead click Manual Setup Chose Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync
In the Domain\Username field: delete everything and enter your email address In the Server field: enter m.hotmail.com Keep the box ticked for 'Use secure connection (SSL)' and keep the box unticked for 'Accept all SSL certificates'
Should do it.

Nae bother. So you can download the stock app from the Market? I'm guessing its just called Mail? It would be better to have that working than Mail and Hotmail both trying to sync, for battery life.
No the app is not on the market.

Does the Galaxy S3 (I747) push email using IMAP?

Hello,
I am trying to find out a bit more about email push, IMAP and the S3.
Every time I setup my IMAP email accounts, the setup process asks what will the polling time be. Why would we have to set this up when IMAP works with push? We don't have to pull email... unless the S3 does not support push email...
Or, maybe I am setting it wrong?
I have 7 or 8 email addresses and all are going through GMAIL at the moment (setup as labels), and Gmail does a very good job pushing emails... but the back end still calls the email services through POP... so it's not really push at all... plus I can't add Yahoo to it.
Before anyone says "oh well, keep using the gmail app, then!", I am a firm believer in using stock apps first so that I don't have to add layer after layer of applications to do one single task... and if I have a stock email app, that's the one I want to use.
Thanks for your help!
Maildroid works very well in setting up email for push or pull email. No, it's not the stock app, but it will handle multiple email accounts with each account having it's own settings. One account doesn't have to have the same settings as the others.

Thank you, I will try it. I tried k9 but it looks outdated, and it makes a huge contrast with the S3 looks...
Does anyone have any news on this subject?
Push email was available on the native S2 email client.
I also vote for native apps first.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
The native email client does not support IMAP idle. It only offers interval polling. If you're on Exchange, push does work but only with the active sync protocol.
I gave it a try to exchange with my gmail account. It does push but it uses more data and more battery than on the S2 by keeping the phone awake 5min/8h, when it was less than 1min/8h.
