I just bought the T-Mobile S3 LTE - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I just bought this. I'm not too familiar with T-Mobile's LTE version. Does this come with a locked boot loader? I use to have this phone on Verizon. But I feel like a noob again because it's a different carrier variant lol.
What's the easiest & latest way to root & also UNroot the phone? Flash recoveries, and reset binary count.

T-Mobile bootloaders are not locked. All other answers can be found in my T999L thread.

Sweet thank you doc!

nope
no sir!! the bootloader is not locked at all!

I bought this phone off of swappa. The dude who owned this before had it modded. He flashed the Rom back to stock but the binary count isn't reset. I attempted to reset the binary count with "Triangle Away App". It goes through and does it's thing. After I reboot/restart the phone, it tells me the binary count is 1. So I try to flash the stock kernel, and then I flashed stock recovery in Odin to see if that was the problem. The binary reset still won't stick. Can anybody help me out?
I want to go back to complete stock, no root. Stock TouchWiz, stock recovery, stock kernel, reset binary count incase the phone messes up or something and I wanna take it back for warranty/issues. That's my goal here. Can anybody help me out? Not just links to what I need but actual step by step instructions because what I'm doing is not working.

I'd flash Root66 image (which is rooted stock TW) to the phone via ODIN. That typically also flashes Stock Recovery. Confirm that has happened. If not the counter will trip each reboot despite Triangle away resetting it.
If you are now in a position with Root66 plus Stock recovery, then reset the counter and then reboot to confirm it has. If it did, uninstall Superuser/supersu app, Triangle away and Voila! you are ready for warranty exchange.
P.S. - Check if the phone still gets bars. We have heard some horror stories of people selling their phone and then reporting it stolen for free replacement.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! This method worked. I did the triangle away app. Went to download mode & flashed Root66. Everything seems "stock" right now. Gonna do a factory reset & leave some feed back on what happened.

Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
Qualcomm Secure Boot: Enable
Had my baby momma send me a text & I got it. Am I considered back to complete stock out the box? No troubles sending it back to Samsung/T-Mobile if I have issues? I did the "Full UnRoot" in the SuperSU app and it disappeared on it's own.

Is it normal for this T-Mobile bloat/crap notification to be in the notification bar/menu on stock? And is there any way to uninstall or disable them without being rooted?

Pretty much normal. Some you can configure to not bother you, some you can disable in app manager, some you can just turn off notifications by in checking the box in app management.

"New T-Mobile Offer" keeps popping up in my notification bar. It's annoying.
*Edit*
Alright, I disabled this T-Mobile my account app in application manager. It went away from the notification bar for now.

How do I turn on "Multi-Window"? I'm on 4.1.2 Baseband: T999LUVAMB7

That doesn't work. I don't see a multi-window option anywhere. I checked in the notification toggles when you pull down the notification bar. I checked in "display" in settings. I don't see anything for multi-window. Am I on the latest OTA? I have the LTE version of the S3 for T-Mobile, I don't know if that makes a difference or not.

Do the pull down, then scroll to the right, enable multi-window, then the long press back will bring up multi window panel on the left

There's no "Multi-Window" option in the window panel. I have the T999L. Would that make a difference? I flashed the Root66 earlier today. Is that the latest OTA?

Good job going back to Stock. On Multi Window, if in the notification shortcuts, there's no button, then check under Settings > Display. Can't remember the exact option.

I don't remember for sure, but I'm thinking the T999L doesn't have it.

I already checked "display", still nothing. I just wanna make sure I'm actually on the latest ota. Maybe there's a glitch or it's missing in the root66 file I flashed?

1. can i just root a stock rom for sgh-t999 to my sgh-t999v?
2. anyone have the procedures to unroot my sgh-t999v

Flash a stock rooted Rom. T-Mobile one. That seems to be ok as long as you don't flash a T-Mobile radio.
Not sure if triangle away works on the Canadian version.
Maybe someone else has tried it.
All I had to do to return my last one was flash a stock rooted Rom.
I don't think they check the flash counter

I can see you have a Videotron Galaxy S3. They don't check the flash counter. Let's just say I know this "by experience". As long as it's just rooted and you don't have any custom ROM, you should be fine. But indeed if you can at least hide the SU app it would be a good thing.
You could also perform a factory reset in CWM prior to going to the store, as they will make you do it anyways (and you actually don't want them to see the CWM screen)prior to any exchange. It's company policy.

If your trying to go back to stock, just download the stock rom from sammobile, it has everything you need like stock recovery, and then just flash it via odin.

Thanks!
I'll test it tonight, wouldn't look good to download a 700 mb file at work!
I tried a few firmwares, but for some reason they all said "unsupport dev_type" when trying to use odin to return to stock non root (from stock rooted) In the end, the easiest way to remove root was to just let Kies update my gs3 to Jelly Bean (sgh-t999v). Painless, no data loss, took about 30 minutes with the firmware download.
Good luck
You will likely also want to triangle away. I won't link because it's extremely dangerous software that requires you to read up on the risks.
But that will reset your custom flashes assuming you have some on your counter you can check easily by going into download mode.
i recently lost my stock rom backup.. deleted it off clockworkmod touch by accident, so i only have the cm10.1 nightly i was running when i deleted it.. now i'm assuming i will lose root if i flash the stock firmware through odin? is there another way to get my stock rom back without losing root (and cyanogenmod rom backups)?
hey guys im having trouble with triangle away on my sgh-t999v with the baseband version: T999VVLUFNF1
after I used triangle away and I go into download mode it says:

Bootloader AP SWAEV: 2
Although the current binary and the system status have changed the warranty bit is still at 1
Please help!

I guess im screwed for warranty..I thought it might be cuz I have a custom kernal installed that triangle away didnt work..but thanks anyway and sorry about posting in multiple threads, im kinda new to this
No problem, thats why i mention it, so you know for the future.
Tecnically, with the warranty bit tripped, the warranty is void. However, i have seen a lot of posts where people sent it in anyway and their warranty was still honored. Its not a guarantee, but there is hope it can be used if needed. The good thing though, is you most likely will never need to use it anyway!

[Q] tmobile returning phone

I need to return S4 White and get another S4 white.
Can I just do the nandriod backtup on Phone 1 and restore on phone 2?
Ques 2.
Is that okay that I just do the factory reset and leave the root on along with twrp?
if not then I just need to ODIN the stock rom?
I am still within the 20 days return policy
First, yes u can restore it with everything you have on that one with no issue except if your getting the s4 from another carrier, the bloat might give you issues with it.
Second, If you're returning it and it's rooted your warranty is voided so you need to go back to stock and unroot it and the flash counter that tells if you've made any unauthorized changes to the software might give you issues so I don't now how to reset the flash counter so I would wait until u can restart the flash counter and go back to stock... isn't if I ODIN back to stock would unroot automatically? even remove the recovery as well?
you mean there is no way to check the flash counter or reset?
Odin erases any root files but hey the only way to see if it resets the flash counter is by doing it and once you went back to stock and get on download mode again and once you proceed check at the top left where a small text will say something like, system version: official Samsung, flash counter: 0 or 1, name... Etc... And yes it will take the recovery as well
Edit: if it doesn't reset it try researching it on Google I'm pretty sure there's some way to do it..

flash counter only increase if you ODIN anything other than Stock. Correct?
I use the exploit to get the root access, so technically I never ODIN, and my flash counter should be to 0.
question is if I do the ODIN to stock, is that gonna increase the flash counter?
Can I not just go back to stock via kies? that will not increase the flash counter I guess.
here is the screenshot showing the current status of what it is now after root and twrp installed.
Does not really show the flash counter.
I'm not really sure but try to use triangle away and see if it shows u Ur flash counter and if it does don't try to reset it with it Kuz I don't know if it's compatible with the s4 yet
Edit: I just checked and yes that app does work with the s4 so there's Ur option... Check if it's showing the flash counter nd if it does reset it nd then go back to stock nd problem solved..

follow the instructions as you said.
Now I am back to stock but the Device Status still shows "custom".
I also used the triangle away 2.90 which let me reset the counter back to 0, it showed me on the confirmation page, but looks like that didn't do the job.
Now there is no root but custom device status.
Returning phone like this would cause any issue?
I tried kies as well, its just not connecting with kies, even after re-installing drivers couple of times
Go into stock recovery and wipe cache and do a factory reset from there that should clear it up.

Will rooting Note 2 disable OTA?

Hi
My N7100 has a strange problem.
I switch on wifi, then go to about phone and then software update
Then I click check for updates.
Earlier when no update was available, the phone used to simply say "latest already installed or something like that"
Now it keeps doing "Checking for updates" and this goes on for more than 10 minutes. After that I pressed cancel.
I restarted phone, but no use
I am on stock rom, stock kernel. My phone is rooted though using dr. Ketan's method and I have also reset the flash counter.
Same here....got no clue

So, does this mean, if you root your phone OTA updates are KAPUT??
I did not see this in the rooting threads. I think then we need to add this info, that if you root your phone, update through mobile ODIN only
Since rooters are facing this problem, I have changed the title to reflect the same.
Rooting is a modification in firmware, and OTA can not recognize modified firmwares. If you've rooted without a custom recovery, may be removing root from supersu (or any super user management tool) can fix this problem.
Mine showed 2 different OTA messages after rooting: The first one: "The phone has been modified, etc..." then I used Triangle Away (it always shows 1 in the flash counter though) and now it's stuck in "Searching for updates".
Unfortunately I can't find the stock rom for my country (Honduras). I want to go back to 4.1.1
Of course, sure. Rooting will Disable OTA update. If you wanna get OTA update back, just go to Samsung-update.com
, download the latest firmware with your country name, if your country is not found, choose the nearest country, and then flash it with Odin, then OTA update will available back.

I think as long as you're rooted you can't use OTA updates on Samsung. I got triangle away, status normal, rooted and the same thing happened to me when trying OTA.... so best way to just flash each new update via Odin. Since there is no data loss involved, it is ok. And then root again (it is a 3 minute operation anyway)

[Q] revert back to "unrooted" phone

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S3 T999L from craigslist and wanted to unlock it to send it overseas. My sister had a T-Mobile account so I had her contact the representative and request it. They said it would happen within 24 hours. Anyway, since I didn't have much time, I rooted it using "Method 1 - The Root66 Way" through Odin in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2370981
Today, T-Mobile gave me an unlock code but when I used it, it didn't work. My guess is that it's because the phone is rooted. Is there a way to go back to it being unrooted so I can use the unlock code?
Thanks in advance
Open SuperSU app and select full unroot. Though I doubt its whats keeping you from getting unlocked. Worth a try though.

Yes there are several options to root and you can just reroot using any one. Shouldn't be any need to wipe anything if you want to use root66 again.

Either Triangle away is not working properly or I'm doing something wrong but I used your 1st method to revert back and unroot using the stock and root file, kernel and recovery files through Odin and used Triangle away at the end. It stated that counter is 0, then I unrooted from SU app and restarted but the counter read 1 after restart.
I'm not sure what's going on.
Make sure you are flashing the stock SECURE Kernel and stock recovery, then TA. Then unroot.
And you may actually want to try running triangle away, reboot download, then if the counter is zero, Odin flash the official firmware.

ok so this time I re-rooted using recovery method and then UNrooted using the recovery method listed by you.
Reboot into CWM or TWRP Recovery
Flash PureStock Rom
Flash the unmodified, Secure UVAMB7 Kernel
Flash Stock UVAMB7 Recovery
Next, if you want to wipe everything but your internal SD Card, Factory Reset before rebooting.
If you want a 100% clean, out of the box type device, reboot Recovery.
This should take you into the stock recovery you just flashed. Now Factory Reset.
Reboot Phone
(Last chance to run Triangle Away!)
Open SuperUser/SuperSU (app)
Find and select the option to Permanantly Unroot.
Reboot
Done!!!

After using TA to reset counter and after unrooting by SU, i restarted and then checked binary counter in downloading mode and it read 1... why is that? so frustrating....
the reason I want to do this is because I have an unlock code but it won't work... there's no other explanation as to why the unlock code from TMOBILE wouldn't work other than this counter issue...
It could be the wrong unlock code. Ive heard of more than a few people having to call back a few times. I was able to unlock with a count of about 8 or so. Granted I wasnt using a code, but I dont see this as being the cause. But to be sure, try this:
Triangle Away. (Close/reopen the apo to make sure it worked) then pull the battery. Reboot directly to download mode. Make sure the counter is 0. Flash the official firmware released yesterday.
No idea why its not working for you. Ive had several confirmations that it did work before. Keep in mind that if you have a custom recovery or kernel, every time you boot up the phone it will retrip the counter to 1. So be careful your not booting up w/ cwm or twrp installed.

reset flash counter for tmob handset warranty exchange?

it's been a while since i exchanged a handset under warranty through t-mob. Besides unrooting, do i need to reset the flash counter? have they gotten smarter? thanks

Quick question. I couldn't reset the custom binary counter except back to 1 using triangle away. I got the phone to say "official" everywhere else and in DL mode it says my current binary is official. I am unrooted now as well. I have a couple issues with my phone that aren't root related ( dirty prox sensor and a degraded weak signal unless I am really close to a tower). Tmo is sending me a warranty replacement phone next week. Will they reject my phone that I am sending in since it was rooted and says that I had a custom binary at one point? Thanks in advance.

bump. bueller... bueller...
Any help would be appreciated, my question is sort of urgent.
If you are still on 4.1.x bootloader then you can use triangle away app to reset the counter.

when I was on 4.1 I couldn't reset it to 0. I tried over and over again trying multiple times in different ways. no dice. I wasn't even able to make it say "official" in the "about device" section of settings. So I said screw it and just updated to 4.3 and everything is stock except the flash counter. I am afraid of re-rooting and using triangle away again just because I don't want it to trip the counter again and say "modified".
On 4.1.x, counter will trip if you have a custom ROM, recovery or kernel.
I do not think as of now there is a way to reset binary counter on 4.3 bootloader.

First, factory reset the device.
Second, odin MrRobinson's root66 rom (4.1.x). This will return the factory recovery and leave you rooted.
Third, install triangle away apk. You will have to allow unknown sources.
Fourth, triangle away and reset counter.
Fifth, unroot and factory reset.
Once this is done, check the flash counter. Should be reset. If so, put it in a box and ignore it until you send it back. You could also take the ota and use it...
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
A good way to check (unfortunately) to see your root status is to use T-Mobiles device health (should be on your phone somewhere) and it will tell you if you are rooted or not.
Lol if that is their way of checking then I am good to go, I am not rooted. I am afraid to install mrrobinsons stock rooted ROM because I think it might trip the knox counter... Is that right?

By the way I am on the 4.3 boot loader so there isn't going back...

Honestly I don't know. Are you running official 4.3 now? If not and you're on 4.1.x and you like it then stay on it. I can say I did not see anything worth while going to 4.3 (that is me personally).
To check your "Device Health" you need to go to:
Apps > T-Mobile My Account > Device Health (Beta) > History > Device Diagnostics Report > scroll down to the header that says "Rooting" and it will tell you if your device is rooted or not.
My Note 2 says its rooted even though I installed the official OTA from T-Mobile.

Keep in mind I have not tripped the boot loader, no triangle count, no knox count and my device status reads official.
Yeah, the only reason I even give a crap about the counters is because I am sending my phone back to tmo for a warranty replacement. I am just worried they will reject me and charge me the full price for the replacement phone since my flash counter is at 1... But my Knox counter is still 0.

Sorry, I missed the part where you ota'd. KNOX is irreversible. I don't know what you're options are.

Well one option is IF you have accidential damage on your line to use that. I'm not advocating that one let their accidential insurance covered phone get run over by a bus or something...BUT if that were to happen Tmobile would replace it for you.
The problems mentioned by rail88 seem to be hardware related, not sure why Samsung would deny warranty when KNOX counter is still untouched.
But again its up to rail88 to try different options but my personal opinion is that any such attempt may cause more harm than good.

Yeah I agree cipher. I hope they wouldn't be so petty but I will just take my chances and not mess with it. I think I will be safer and keep more counters from tripping if I just leave it alone.

So did T-mo accept the phone?
I've been itching to try a new rom on my T-mobile Note 2 but hesitate because of warrantee issues so I was wondering how T-mobile treated you on that phone, I case I have to do the same thing I might know what to expect.
Thanks in advance.
