Will rooting Note 2 disable OTA? - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
My N7100 has a strange problem.
I switch on wifi, then go to about phone and then software update
Then I click check for updates.
Earlier when no update was available, the phone used to simply say "latest already installed or something like that"
Now it keeps doing "Checking for updates" and this goes on for more than 10 minutes. After that I pressed cancel.
I restarted phone, but no use
I am on stock rom, stock kernel. My phone is rooted though using dr. Ketan's method and I have also reset the flash counter.

Same here....got no clue

I've got the same thing. I just put it down to been rooted.

So, does this mean, if you root your phone OTA updates are KAPUT??
I did not see this in the rooting threads. I think then we need to add this info, that if you root your phone, update through mobile ODIN only

Since rooters are facing this problem, I have changed the title to reflect the same.

Rooting is a modification in firmware, and OTA can not recognize modified firmwares. If you've rooted without a custom recovery, may be removing root from supersu (or any super user management tool) can fix this problem.

Mine showed 2 different OTA messages after rooting: The first one: "The phone has been modified, etc..." then I used Triangle Away (it always shows 1 in the flash counter though) and now it's stuck in "Searching for updates".
Unfortunately I can't find the stock rom for my country (Honduras). I want to go back to 4.1.1

Of course, sure. Rooting will Disable OTA update. If you wanna get OTA update back, just go to Samsung-update.com
, download the latest firmware with your country name, if your country is not found, choose the nearest country, and then flash it with Odin, then OTA update will available back.

Flashing the firmware over Odin won't bring your ota back as you binary will still show custom there is a away to get the Samsung firmware back but up must use triangle away first to get the counter to 1

I think as long as you're rooted you can't use OTA updates on Samsung. I got triangle away, status normal, rooted and the same thing happened to me when trying OTA.... so best way to just flash each new update via Odin. Since there is no data loss involved, it is ok. And then root again (it is a 3 minute operation anyway)

Yes if your rooted you can't do it. And your right it would be a lot faster just to flash the update via Odin. But if your just having a bad time with a rooted phone for some messed reason. Then that fourm will help u get back to stock as you can be.

Thanks everyone for the information. I want to go back to 4.1.1 mostly because 4.1.2 has a very annoying auto-rotate bug (the screen gets stuck in landscape or portrait after a while) I also wanted to recover the OTA feature but it's not a big deal now.

After u reset your flash counter and reboot you still have a custom recovery that makes flash counter raise to 1 back again x) if u want to keep flash counter zero and still root u should get prerooted stock roms, there could be other options but i dont know abt that
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

Yeah... Rooting means losing OTA's
but after all, u could just use mobile odin and download the update from sammobile.
i never really used ota 2 be honest.
good luck

I tested this Awhile ago, But it was with the official rooted firmware flashed via odin, as long that the system is flagged as official OTA works just fine while rooted.

Flash a stock rooted Rom. T-Mobile one. That seems to be ok as long as you don't flash a T-Mobile radio.
Not sure if triangle away works on the Canadian version.
Maybe someone else has tried it.
All I had to do to return my last one was flash a stock rooted Rom.
I don't think they check the flash counter

I can see you have a Videotron Galaxy S3. They don't check the flash counter. Let's just say I know this "by experience". As long as it's just rooted and you don't have any custom ROM, you should be fine. But indeed if you can at least hide the SU app it would be a good thing.
You could also perform a factory reset in CWM prior to going to the store, as they will make you do it anyways (and you actually don't want them to see the CWM screen)prior to any exchange. It's company policy.

If your trying to go back to stock, just download the stock rom from sammobile, it has everything you need like stock recovery, and then just flash it via odin.

Thanks!
I'll test it tonight, wouldn't look good to download a 700 mb file at work!
I tried a few firmwares, but for some reason they all said "unsupport dev_type" when trying to use odin to return to stock non root (from stock rooted) In the end, the easiest way to remove root was to just let Kies update my gs3 to Jelly Bean (sgh-t999v). Painless, no data loss, took about 30 minutes with the firmware download.
Good luck
You will likely also want to triangle away. I won't link because it's extremely dangerous software that requires you to read up on the risks.
But that will reset your custom flashes assuming you have some on your counter you can check easily by going into download mode.
i recently lost my stock rom backup.. deleted it off clockworkmod touch by accident, so i only have the cm10.1 nightly i was running when i deleted it.. now i'm assuming i will lose root if i flash the stock firmware through odin? is there another way to get my stock rom back without losing root (and cyanogenmod rom backups)?
hey guys im having trouble with triangle away on my sgh-t999v with the baseband version: T999VVLUFNF1
after I used triangle away and I go into download mode it says:
current binary: Samsung Official
System status: official
qualcomm secureboot:enable
Warranty Bit:1
Bootloader AP SWAEV: 2
Although the current binary and the system status have changed the warranty bit is still at 1
Please help!
There is no way (and never will be a way) to change the Warranty Bit. Sorry

I guess im screwed for warranty..I thought it might be cuz I have a custom kernal installed that triangle away didnt work..but thanks anyway and sorry about posting in multiple threads, im kinda new to this
No problem, thats why i mention it, so you know for the future.
Tecnically, with the warranty bit tripped, the warranty is void. However, i have seen a lot of posts where people sent it in anyway and their warranty was still honored. Its not a guarantee, but there is hope it can be used if needed. The good thing though, is you most likely will never need to use it anyway!

Device Status : Modified

I know this was talked about here.
I have rooted my phone i have CWM recovery (installed status bar mod), and my device status is modified ( i cant run system update)..
Any way i can change it without loosing data ? Because all solutions i found included wiping data ... And i hate restoring data with titanium stuff etc...
Thanks folx !
In another thread i was told to go to chainfires root thread but there is only a way with wiping data...
Any one knows way without wiping any data ?
Try triangle away

You can NOT use OTA updates after rooting. Period. Even if you get your device status to normal (which requires you to factory reset after rooting and running Triangle Away). OTA updates will only work on unmodified systems.
You can, however, get the update from sammobile and flash with Odin.

Erm, not true. I am rooted and device is normal. Recently I just did an OTA update. After that still used OTA Rootkeeper to restore root.
I have been trying to find a way to get my status: Modified back to normal without wiping data(rooted, stock rom/recovery) but I have had no luck...would be nice if there is a way to do it!

That was sheer blind luck then. OTAs are incremental updates, so you could just have easily have bricked your phone doing that.

Well, I was rooted and my device shows normal. I did not wipe data, factory reset or flash a stock ROM again after rooting. In fact, my phone showed modified immediately after rooted and mysteriously changed to normal the day after without me doing anything at all. The only possibility I can think of is that I used the jig as well as triangle away. If you have a jig, you might want to try and see if it works.

I guess you can quote Chainfire as being wrong as well then, because he says pretty much the same thing. OTA's are usually incremental updates, which means they patch existing files rather than replace them. IF you've just rooted and not done ANYthing else, you can probably get away with flashing an OTA. But if you've patched anything, expect trouble.
If you use ODIN to flash the OTA, you're probably safe as it has coding to fix such problems (as far as I can discern anyway), but flashing the OTA without is just asking for it.
OTA Updates are overrated, why wait for an OTA when you can download from sammobile at your leisure.

My recovery is stock, and is say's modified. The only thing I did was root the phone, stock rom/recovery.
I have a Jig from my S2 days...how will inserting the jig reset it? Anything else need done other than insert it? Did not know the Jig would work with the N2...did not work with my S3.
With the phone off, insert the jig. It should boot into download mode. Then I reboot. That's all I did. I am not saying it will work, just that this was the only thing I did differently from others. Otherwise cannot explain why my status shows normal even though I am rooted and did not factory reset or wipe data after that.

Downgrade from 4.3 back to 4.1.2

So I did this a couple times now first by accident, then on purpose. If you want to go back to 4.1.2 from 4.3 all you have to do is use Odin. Flash stock 4.1.2 onto 4.3 you get an error "unsupported firmware" then put your phone back into download mode (volume down+home button+power) next flash CF-auto root. After that you can boot into recovery (volume up+home+power) in recovery format everything factory reset, format cache. Last reboot your phone it should reboot into 4.1.2 I think that is how I did it if I remember all the steps right. Feel free to ask questions I don't always explain myself very well.

the million dollar question.
Well to be honest I think the answer to both questions is No. In download mode after I did the ota knox bull has been there. I actually only meant to use auto root on my 4.3 but knox kept on screwing up the root and su would fc. I figured if I started over and used auto root on 4.3 right after flashing rom with odin without letting phone boot and that worked I have 4.3 rooted with su and custom recovery (cwm). So no I didn't find a way to get rid of knox completely. Just a way to go back to 4.1.2 from 4.3.

I'm still thinking that Knox will need to be patched/disabled during the root process (or something along those lines). Samsung claims the the fuse trigger is only capable of being triggered from 0x0 to 0x1 and not back again. So to me the answersolution probably will have to come with segregating Knox from the bootloader/system altogether. It'd be funny if devs could use Knox against itself by segregating it in the very "sandbox" it creates, if that makes sense

sir, i'm new to this forum and here's my situation:
i have a sgh-t889 t-mobile locked, stock 4.1.2 (UVBMB4) which i erroneously updated to android 4.3 via kies.
i cannot do network unlock because based on my forum searches, only android 4.1.1 can be network unlocked via the method outlined here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176721
i have odin 3.07 and have already downloaded the following roms:
1. T889UVUCMK7_T889TMBCMK7_T889UVUCMK7_HOME.tar.md5
1.68 GB (1,814,261,839 bytes) (1,771,742 KB)
2. KIES_HOME_T889UVALJ1_T889TMBALJ1_260018_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
1.25 GB (1,345,341,538 bytes) (1313811 KB)
can i reflash my sgh-t889 to 4.1.1 safely and do my own unlock?
thanks for any clarification and more power.
If you can flash back to 4.1.2 from 4.3 then you can flash back to 4.1.1 from 4.1.2. That's how I unlocked my phone.

I flashed to 4.1.1 directly and this worked. I had flashed ota 4.3 rooted the phone, then jedi X 4.3 rom and it messed up my phone bad. Would lose data all the time and massive battery drain. Now I'm back on 4.3 stock rooted.

thanks for the suggestion but the 'com' portion of odin 3.07 would not lit up and the following ROMs could not be flashed:
4.1.2 = SGH-T889_TMB_T889UVBMB4-teshxx.tar.md5
4.1.1 = KIES_HOME_T889UVALJ1_T889TMBALJ1_260018_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
the 'com' portion of odin would only lit up if the sgh-t889 is connected to the pc under usb mode. it would not lit up under download mode.
i have this other 4.1.1 ROM which i did not test yet as of this moment as i'm waiting for more information:
4.1.1 = root66_root66_TMO_T889UVALJ1.tar.md5TMO_T889UVALJ1
from kies update, i have also saved my new updated ROM:
4.3 = T889UVUCMK7_T889TMBCMK7_T889UVUCMK7_HOME.tar.md5

just for clarification, you were on stock 4.1.2, updated OTA to 4.3, then re-flashed successfully to 4.1.1 via odin, then flashed OTA 4.3?
4.1.2 to 4.3 via kies to 4.1.1 via odin to 4.3 via kies
re-reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176721
afterwards, i decided to use odin 3.07 again but this time, i used another usb cable.
i used this ROM = KIES_HOME_T889UVALJ1_T889TMBALJ1_260018_REV04_user_low_ship.tar.md5
re-flashing to lower version via odin 3.07 was successful.
i did the unlocking trick as outlined in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176721
under android 4.1.1 settings, MODIFIED.
software update thru OTA was denied due to software modification.
successfully re-flashed to android 4.3 via odin 3.07 using this ROM = T889UVUCMK7_T889TMBCMK7_T889UVUCMK7_HOME.tar.md5
knox counter was tripped.
afaik, wifi is okay, able to browse my wifi network
i have not yet tested a non-tmo sim.

Since you already tripped the knox counter, you can flash the VALL4 tmobile modem and try the same unlock steps in the thread.
The specific modem was all that was required to unlock the t889. I unlocked on 4.1.2 only flashing the older modem and following the unlock steps.

Over the air update

Installed ota update should I wait till bootloader is right to root. Or do auto root.

If you have installed OTA update directly from the phone itself then rooting via auto-root is going to trip your KNOX Warranty BIT.
If you are not concerned about it then yes you can try auto-root or any other method.
Not worried about Knox just want root with no problems.

Help please!
Hello All.. After over 5 years of flashing I think I have finally bricked my device.. I am normally great with directions and the forum however I think the latest 4.3 update got me twisted up. Odin'd back to stock and upgraded OTA. All was well.. Then I attempted Chainfire's CF root.. All was well and I froze on a phone call.. I battery pulled and now I get "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again".. I tried to go through Kies emergency recovery and it wont accept my serial numbers.. I called t-mobile they told me I need to bring it to a smasung dealer to get "flashed"... I'm at a lost now.. One thing else is when I access download mode I see this Knox Warranty Void : 1.. Does this mean I'm done? I've been trying to read up on this knox and it seems scary to say the least.. yet nothing I read has helped me.. After hors of searching and missing the football game I decided to look to the forums.. Any help is very much appreciated. :crying:
I tried to ODIN back to stock with several .tar files (UVBMB4 and UVALJ1) it fails and shows unsupported version(in red) on the device

I saw that another user had the same thing happen to them. I believe that they fixed it by using Odin to flash the 4.3 stock rom

This worked bro. Thanks again!!:good:

[Q] Need advice resetting to stock 4.2.2

I'm planning on upgrading to another phone so I'm trying to get this counter on my phone reset to 0, then unrooting.
Right now I am on the latest version of Insanity ROM Android 4.3 MK2 Baseband .
I tried resetting the counter using TriangleAway earlier, but I noticed I needed to be on a stock Samsung kernel.
So I found one (and this same thing happened when I tried to flash a stock rooted ROM with MDL) on XDA directly for the T-Mobile S4, only to find out that after flashing, it wouldn't get past the black screen after the SGS4 logo comes on.
Luckily, I restored back
I know how to unroot and everything I just want to ask before I do this,. Can I go ahead on using Triangle Away on my current rom? And then do the unrooting process?
If you took the OTA 4.3 you are Sol. If you still have the MDL bootloader you can Odin the MDL stock image then root and triangle away and then unroot. You will be good to go then.

No, I never had it updated when I bought it from Tmo as Android 4.2.2 . So you're saying with even with the current custom 4.3 Android & custom kernel that I have right now I can Odin the MDL? (Unroot, Root, TriangleAway, unroot?)

Yes. If you never took the OTA and only flashed the mk2 modem you can absolutely Odin the stock MDL ROM and root, triangle away then unroot (in that order) You'll be good to go then. Just make sure you're binary found is at 0 by booting into download mode when you're done.

I'm having the same problem when I got my s4 I didn't know anything about Knox or all the other headaches that come with rooting this phone!! But me being me as soon as I opened the phone I updated it to 4.3 then rooted it not knowing I wouldnt be able to return to stock! Even tho I did backup my stock rooted phone my phone will not let me restore to it so I've been stuck on beanstalk 4.4 but really want to go back to stock rooted cause of the camera!! Haha.... I'm new to the s4 so I'm still learning more about it I had an s2 before this and that was all cake walk flashing and what not. I just want to know if Odin is an option for me to return to stock or not?? I think I backed it up through lies before ota 4.3

From what I've read in other threads you cannot downgrade bootloaders so if you took th OTA you can't go back to 4.2. From what I understand it will brick your phone. If you are already 4.3 and rooted you have already voided your warranty. You may as well Odin the stock 4.3 and root again so you can flash other Roms since you are stuck on 4.4.
