Using Straight Talk and Tethering ....Questions - Sony Xperia ZL

HI, I just bought a C6506 (carrier unlocked) from Ebay and have Straight Talk as a provider. I was wondering if anyone on this forum is using Straight Talk with this device and if so are you able to tether via USB or WIFI without issues? If there are any special settings or apps I should use I will appreciate a "heads-up" on it......Thanks, I hope this device is better than my HTC ONE X+ was...LOL!

Yes you can tether and use mobile hot spot even via usb but if you use to much data(over 2gb) you will get throttled and have to wait till your next cycle to get the speeds. I've been using Mobile hot spot for a long time never reach over 2 gb and haven't had anything happen to me but others have reported they have been throttled for much less.

Thanks for your reply. Does this device need to be Rooted and have a Custom Rom in order to tether without being detected? Also, should a tethering/hotspot app like FoxFi or Android Tether be used?

There is no way to not be detected lol..... As far as I'm aware of most roms even stock ones have mobile hot spot preloaded on them. You can use any app you like to use hot spot.

With At&t they can detect you using it and want to charge you for it and Straight Talk uses their network but doesn't offer a tethering option and will cut you off if they catch you, so they say, so I've used FoxFi to get around it and only on one device has there been issues. I can't seem to figure out why either. Thats why I was wondering about this device in particular. May I ask what service provider you use?

Cool. I don't mean to be a pain but I would really like to know if you've had any issues with it on ST. Are you rooted and unlocked and all that stuff too? If you've seen another thread I have you will understand my questions....I haven't opened my box yet because I'm 50/50 on selling it and getting a Nexus 5. Basically what I'm asking is, are you completely happy with the device and also with it on ST? Thanks for your input.

I've been with straight talk for about 2 years and absolutely love it and haven't had any issues. I have always been a HTC fan and I have to say I love my Hox. IV had many devices and tested others like the s4 and still keep coming back to the hox. I have the international version though it's different from the other variants. I have not tested the nexus 5 as of yet.

I like the nexus 5 and heard a lot of great things with it especially with the power house it comes with. Also it has the hardware to support LTE and as we all know ST rolled there LTE support out(witch I'm totally prepared for because I bought a new sim card for straights talks LTE) I'm kinda thinking about getting either the HTC One or nexus 5 but it's all about money lol I just don't have it right now.

OH, I thought you have the XZL. I just sold my One X+ because thats the only one I couldn't get to tether, no matter what I tried. I loved that phone too....Am I right in saying that you've never used the XZL?

I would say other then the lte capabilities is the only difference but overall the hox is what in would of chosen between the 2. The hox has much better development support then the Sony. More roms, tweaks, mods, and customizations. And it's still going strong. The hox seemed noticeably faster when on custom roms the Sony. Reception seemed the same.

My HOX+ was LTE and it was plenty fast on ST. Damn I wish I would have kept it....The tethering thing just pissed me off...LOL. I wonder why there isn't much development on the XZL? I just have this paranoid feeling that as soon as I root it I'll have the dreaded battery issues that has plagued it....

Yes I agree you should of kept it. For a device that is a year old it still is being developed on. You had the one x+ with the 1.7ghz quad core correct? Nevertheless if you are worried about the battery problems on the xzl in would shoot over to that section and read up on it. Everything can be tweaked and or exploited just have to do some digging around on the forum.

The HOX+ was 1.7 and also the 64gb version.....If it would tether without getting detected I definitely would have kept it....I did find a thread on the Nexus 5 forum that dealt with it and they say its a fix because the one who figured it out on the Nexus tried it on an HOX+ and it worked...just my luck though, LOL. Anyway, the battery issues for this phone seem to cause everyone who has the issue to have to send it back to Sony and I'd rather not have to deal with all that. Plus I've noticed for a phone to have so little development it has a lot of issues and thats not a good sign. Anyway, I listed it on Ebay for $320 if anyone wants it...LOL

Well being detected is something that can happen no matter what they track data usage on any carrier. Unless ur talking about the stock hotspot app that att uses on there devices in witch it's hard wired to not work with the att firmware. Nevertheless flashing a new Rom would fix that and have all the access to hotspot that u want even on the hox+. So the point is you will be monitored for data usage no matter what, as far as I know here is no getting around it but ST re didn't here terms of use and changed it to a 2.5gb cap therefor u have that much to tether with without any problems. I have used a method when using data by adding 4 working different apn's to my device and switching to a different one every week(1 a week) then start over each cycle. Now I'm not sure if it keeps me off the radar but I haven't had any issues yet. Kinda like playing cat and mouse more of me being over cautious lol.

CDMA Desire

Is there any possible way to get a forum for the CDMA Desire? I just switched from Verizon to US Cellular and this its driving me insane. The Mesmerize has it's own forum and that's not as important as this. At least the Fascinate and Mesmerize are both CDMA. Please I'd even be willing to do the work to help make it. And before anybody here decides to say something stupid like just get a Mesmerize, if that's what I wanted I would have. Keep those comments to yourself. I had a Fascinate, I wanted to go back to HTC.

looks like you beat me to the thread. it would be nice to have a seperate forum for the cdma desire. its disappointing seeing all these threads for new roms that only work on the gsm desire. It's almost impossible to find a rom for the cdma desire. is CM6 the only thing out there? i switched from a nexus one to a desire only because i cant get 3G with the nexus one on the network here in alaska
I'm running a stock deodexed rom with A2SD. I'll post the link tomorrow. At work right now. There's not a lot but I hear CM is very stable on this. I might try it. Hopefully the mods notice this thread. It's hard for me, I had the Incredible, DX, and Fascinate so I'm used to everything being right there.

yeah man tell me about it. Now its like 98% percent of whats out there wont work with the bravoC. makes me want to go back to my N1 but im liking my 3G . id be happy with a non rooted sense 2.2 rom. one can only wish
I would LOVE to have a cdma Desire forum. For many ACG carriers the Desire is the flagship phone, really sad to see it not getting much love on XDA.
The following Roms are available for BravoC: They are all AOSP because there is no sense froyo rom to use as a base; personally I hate sense and much prefer AOSP.

i bought the TMobile one on day one so i was out of luck. I prefer not to be on ATT. I have cable, internet, wireless from the same company so i get a discount. plus with this company theres no cap on my wireless data usage or no bandwidth cap on my home internet, which is a plus
edit: just saw you're from anchorage, i have gci
if you have GCI you DO have a data cap on your cable modem. Those assholes got rid of unlimited traffic cable modems in august.

i dont want to highjack this thread
i've had unlimited since march 08 and it's still unlimited. i believe thats only for new customers, just like ATT did with their monthly cap. It doesn't affect you if you had it before, at least from what i was told from a buddy of mine using ATT
Bump. Come on people great device with lots of support so how about some CDMA love.
Comment deleted - bah xda app... processing... processing
I am not being rude but, why not try sending a pm to one of the forum admins with this request? May be more productive than just talking about it
I agree with what has been said... the forum would be less cluttered and as a result, it would avoid a lot of confusion on this matter.

Agreed and I'm not normally one to clutter or post nonsense but I figured I'd give *****ing a try because I know of people that have pm admin already to no avail. I will try it though.

If PM'ing doesn't work, we can just make a new thread in the wrong forum and wait for a moderator to come across it to move it. that way it WILL get noticed right away
bump.
If there's a forum for each of the samsung galaxy S phones, those are the same phones just on different networks right? correct me if im wrong. That being the case, im sure there can be a BravoC forum. Everyday it feels like im looking at a forum for a phone i don't own. Which is half true.

at&t employee phone..risk to root?

Hey guys. Just got my new company phone after my skyrocket shattered. Can't stand the LG ui ... I want to root. My phone us owned by at&t..as an employee am I at risk to root you think? I'm familiar with root just not sure if it's risky since this phone isn't mine technically
If you know what you're doing and can back up everything for restoral later (CWM can help with this, of course), I don't see why you'd get in trouble for playing with your company phone. Just don't create more work than necessary for support techs and you should be fine lol. Also, you probably don't want to flaunt crazy customizations to your coworkers
Or you could always use Go Launcher Ex and other Go products
Sent from my Motorola Photon 4G (MoPho) on Sprint, the Now Network using XDA Premium.
Ya I'm using adw right now with go locker. Still doesn't help me with the LG ui in every core app as well as the nasty notification icons. Any suggestions on how I can get those looking a little better?
As for rooting..I asked a coworker. He said I'd get fired Haha. Not sure how they would ever find out..
AT&T are parasitic leeches, they will find out. Trust me. They monitor the phones. I'd buy a Nitro off contract with a clean ESN and load it onto your account, that way you can say that it's your phone.
---------- Post added at 09:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 PM ----------
BUT, I would not risk getting fired. Try using a personal AT&T account.
Ya I'm gonna get a personal account when my sprint contract runs out. Anything I can do for notification icons? Or how hideous LG makes everything

No not yet as there is NO roms or ASOP stuff out for it yet. So rooting or not rooting ur still gonna have it
FWIW, I've worked for At&t for a year and a half, and I've rooted every phone I've had. They can't tell when your phone is rooted; I even have a couple coworkers that have flashed MIUI on their GSIIs.

Where do you come off with saying that AT&T will find out if your phone is rooted? Firstly, u don't seem to be on AT&T but instead on Sprint. Second, there won't be hundreds of forums dedicated to AT&T android phones if AT&T knows immediately if you root the phone. Third, millions of users Root their phones, and even unlock the bootloader. I just sent my unlocked Atrix back to AT&T due a damaged 3.5mm port, and they didn't even say anything. So please do not provide false information to those who wish to know.
Oh now I'm tempted.. thanks for letting me know. What are the advantages without custom roms? And did you Work retail or does that even matter. And is there a recovery image just in case?

There is a recoverory image I think. BUT theres nothing for us to REALLY do to our phones yet. no roms or anything
it seems to me that since you came here inquiring about the risk to your job, that there is indeed some % of chance that you could lose your job over rooting your phone, is that fair to say?
if that's fair to say, I think this is not the best place to seek job security advice + the answer seems obvious.
Ya its not worth my job. I'll just wait for my personal phone in a few months. Thanks for the help guys. That Guy who said he roots all his COUs got me thinking though

HTC one X international - Where to buy? (Also some question)

Hello, after read tons and tons of thread / reviews / comparisons between the GS3 & the HOX, the GS3 dual core & the GS3 quadcore, the HOX dual core & the HOX quadcore, I think I finally decided to go for the HOX int quadcore. While I'm still worried about the battery life I think with some tweaks and updates it should be fine... I hope...
1. So, my first question is, where to buy it... I checked amazon and ebay, some people are selling it but I don't really know if it's safe or not, is there a good place to buy it? (I'm from Canada).
2. My last phone was an HTC touch HD and I wasn't using a phone for about 2 years and a lot of things changed... I never used android. I have read a few thread about root, etc... I guess I'll have the latest update with the phone when I'll buy it, I read there is no way (yet?) to root the phone with the new update. What does that mean? No custom roms? No custom kernels? Will someone release an app to root the phone with the new update?
3. I will be using my phone mainly for internet browsing I'd like to get 5-6 hours on screen time with web browsing, do you think it's possible with custom kernel and tweaks?
4. I watched videos on youtube about multitasking issues (reloading apps every time you switch), while I read it's been fixed in an update I just want to be sure, is that fixed?
TLDR: What is the best place to buy it? Will having the latest update be an issue? Will the battery last for 5-6h on web browsing with some tweaks? Are multitasking issues fixed?
Thanks!

I bought mine from Amazon because then you at least have 30 days to return it if something is wrong.
Having said that, I ended up with a T-Mobile Germany branded version, so I'm not sure what you'll get. Seems like Expansys is more likely to sell you the generic Asian version.
But I still feel much more confident purchasing from Amazon. They take good care of their customers. Returns have never been a problem for me.

I highly recommend Negri Electronics. They're based out of Las Vegas.
Right now $559.50 shipped for the grey One X. Unbranded. Mine is a perfect HT24D April 2012 build. No defects.

Several members had this issue with Amazon dealers. They received branded versions.
I'd recommend Clove... They are very reliable and if anything goes wrong they are very supportive.

3 to 4 hours of max sreen on time if you conserve ir battery, excellent screen off time up to 2 days
kernels can fix but so far custom governor on t3 are not easy to do
best thing about ur choice is thd games
read the how to pick ur unit guide
finally multi tasking can be easily customized to ur needs using root
finally if most important for u is web browsing n not gaming go with the dual core version it has better screen on times
Thanks for all your replies.

Yeah. I considered sending it back right away, but it has been perfect otherwise. With all of the defects I read about, I figured I shouldn't take the chance and I could always custom rom it.
The one thing I love about Amazon is that the return would be no hassle.

Branded version has carrier logo on it? What is the difference between branded and unbranded?
Also is there a way to fix the multitasking issue without removing sense? (I guess you don't have sense on custom roms)

No logo (other than HTC), but there was carrier bloatware on mine(T-mobile) and a carrier splash screen at boot up. The wireless hotspot works fine, so it's not like it's locked, but it was still annoying. Mine also defaulted to German, but that was easy to remedy.

Ok thanks, I'd like some feedback from the people who have tested both US and Int version to know if there is big differences for battery life and perfs, for games I don't really care since I find gaming on touchscreen horrible, if there was something like a mini gamepad that you can connect on the USB port why not, but gaming on touch screen I don't care.
I want good multitasking, good battery life, storage (16gb is small considering data is limited in canada so I can't really use cloud), I don't care about LTE since my area is not covered (yet), I'd also want to know something about updates, are both phones updated at the same time when HTC release an update? Or one phone is updated more frequently than other?
EDIT: Just looked at amazon (http://www.amazon.com/HTC-S720E-Unlocked-Android-SmartPhone/dp/B0078LXM4A) and I found one unlocked but why all HTC one X don't have warranty?

thinking of trading my galaxy s3 for a galaxy nexus?

Should i ? Or just keep the s3?
spec wise i would keep the s3 since its more newer than the nexus
I really love flashing roms which the nexus has lots of..
But i did buy my s3 1 month ago so its literally brand new if i do
A trade i dont wanna be waisting my money that i used to get it
So idk should i do a trade??
Any ideas/opinions is greatly appreciated
-thanks
LOL! You sound like a woman.
That would be downgrading. The nexus device is nice but its also dated now. Since you have already got the newest and fastest device on the market, why not just keep it?
The nexus doest grab my attention like the S3 does. The S3 has more features, screen space and ram. But until you try one side by side, you be the judge. Good luck with your choice.

Thankyou for your opinion, thats whats making me stuck in the middle.. like you said it is downgrading
This situation was the opposite for me. My previous phone was the Galaxy Nexus. I still have both and comparing side by side, I am happier with the GS3. I also understand that it's kinda "slow" here in terms of development for the GS3 compared to the nexus, but there are several awesome, stable roms from which to choose. Not to mention that it's still early in game and development will definitely kick off in the near future.

Agree the development for the u.s varient is slow but then again it is still early i dont want to regret it
Later on if i do the trade, maybe i should just stick with the s3.. it is newer better specs bigger screen etc..
I do usually adapt to the lastest and greatest tech and jump around. I see this device lasting for quite some time. I know other such as HTC will make a run for top. But this is my first Samsung device and i am more than pleased. I did manage to drop and crack my screen the day before my otterbox came in. Once it is replaced ill be a happy camper.
Another topic. Rooting the phone. Ive flashed so many roms on my last few phones that I feel compelled to NOT root the S3. The device works flawlessly and i dont want any unstable crashes or lags.
With the updated launchers working so well these days, i can fully customize my phone with out having to root it. Once Jellybean hits there will be nothing better for a while.
Coming from a rooted device, i truely see no need to root. I dont need backups if im not screwing with it. Aside from wifi tethering (which i have) its not required for me.

After reading your comment I was compelled to check and see how many of my apps require root. Currently only 3 of them do lol. The main reason I rooted my phone was because I did not like the green framework of stock....ICS is beautiful! I won't lie though, it's kind of second nature for me to immediately root even if unnecessary.

Data speeds are subjective. Even though the GS3 is capable of 42mbps I have never even come close to to that; not even the 21mbps that the nexus tops off at. All your other points are solid though.

Agreed. But runner a nice Apex Or Nova Launcher has changed from what it used to be. Besides i have insurance and a warranty. When i had my sensation, i flashed so many unstable roms, RILs, Radios, That i didnt know if my phone would every fully function again. I dont want to deal with that. I support the Dev community %100. To each their own!

Wow! Those are impressive! The fastest I have ever gotten was 12mbps....
the main reason why i'd want to root is to just restore my apps and games with the saved settings and data. anyone else root for that reason, to restore titanium backup data?

That's mainly why I rooted. I am on stock ROM, just rooted for back ups, plus I needed wifi tethering.

the ONE X QUAD CORE is coming to t-mobile, DO NOT trade it for a international version (i had one, 2g makes u wanna cry, esp when you have to find a special sim to use it) . Also the NOTE does not work perfectly (if atnt) so don't bother with that either. Just wait a bit..

This wallpaper takes me back to the first Nexus device. Hard to believe how far phones have come since the first one. Anyone else around since the G1 era?

My Bad..
Can you Link the wallpaper?
My boss had that phone. I was so jealous. Lol
That's the phone that started me on android, had two G1's, one rooted and one stock. Was fun back in those days with all the development going on. Cyanogen Mod and waiting for the weekly updates, can't remember who but I did some testing for one of the recoveries used on the G1.
I had an N1, but only after the original HTC Desire as that was more widely available in the UK and, after using both, somewhat more refined than the N1. That said, the physical trackball was far easier to use than the optical on the Desire.
I was also a fan of the Nexus S and its curved front, but I know I'm in the minority on that one

Second post in this thread. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/nostalgia-overload.4354343/post-85857495
My first Android was the HTC Droid Eris (rooted, of course). The trackball was interesting although it gave me problems eventually, and I then had to abuse it to get it completely disabled instead of giving me the constant problems when I wasn't trying to use it.

JesusFreak I believe was the recovery Kingpin, right?
Yes I had to go to Columbus, Oh. to buy the G1 because the Cincinnati area didn't have 3G and T-Mobile only sold the phone in 3G coverage areas.

I am. Rooted my HTC G1 and loved it. Then the Nexus One was launching and at the time my phone was still fairly new considering how long we used to keep them before smart phones.
Since my wife (gf then) wanted to save money on our bill she got this garbage Samsung dumb phone when I got the G1. So when the Nexus launched I had zero issue buying it immediately because she HATED that phone and wanted mine.
Can't blame me, I tried to talk her into a G1 (she later upgraded to a Rezound, god I miss HTC) she wouldn't budge though lol.
I would be constantly flashing new firmware and Kernel's on my Nexus. I barely ever used it I was doing it so often just because of how cool it was. Eventually the scene started to slow down and I got a couple non Google phones then a pixel xl which was my last until the 6 pro. My least fav Nexus was the Samsung Galaxy Nexus... Go figure since the last 3 phones I've had and come to eventually hate were all Samsung snapdragon devices that couldn't be rooted. I should have imported one instead. Apparently there is a method but it's not public afaik and it costs too much to be worth it and you have to mail them your phone... No ty.
Hopefully Google doesn't start preventing modification because that would be a damn shame. Seeing where the scene is today compared to then is already hard enough. We went from too many firmwares and Kernel's to not enough and it seemed to happen really fast too. I had a bad feeling the day they announced cyanogen was going to come pre installed on whatever that phone was. So many other people based their modified firmware on cyanogen but the tweaks some of them made were genius. Stuff Google is just adding now.
The only bad memory of the scene I have is when I bought an nVidia shield portable off of eBay and the guy didn't say that he installed lineage to it and I don't remember if I couldn't get it back to it's original state for some reason or what but I was not happy, especially since those things were rare and I had found one in we great shape but I couldn't use anything but moonlight on it... Owell.
