Theoretically this should be possible. The SGW doesn´t use a SMB137B like in your example but a SMB328A. By looking on the datasheet I could see the SMB328A is also having a boost driver included to output 5V at the USB plug.
The SMB328
also supports USB On-the-Go devices by providing the required USBOTG
+5V power supply using the Li-Ion battery as a source.

that is very good so maybe in the future we will see self-powered usb otg supported kernels
thanx for your answer @honeyx bro
so galaxy w's hardwares supports self-powered usb otg feature
if our kernel devs @honeyx @Keff91 @hurtsky @Madridii add this featur into their own kernel , this will be very good
we dont find external power supply in everywhere because of that if somone make this it will be very good for us
thanx to all our devs (of course primarily thanx to sir @arco68 )

hi sir @arco68
sorry for bothering you
is this possible to add this feature into kernel technichally??
thanx and best regards
This will NEVER be possible. The self-power isn't a "feature", it's an hardware thing.
OTG is one, in the kernel there isn't self-powered or external-powered. There's only OTG.Stop.
It's a hardware limitation.Period.

The SMB328A is hardware and it´s used in the SGW and it can provide 5V at the USB plug by using the battery, so where is the hardware limitiation you are talking about? At least not in the SMB328A chip itself. There is only one limitation possible. If the output from the chip to provide the 5V isn´t wired with the USB plug. But if it´s using the same wire like for charging the only limitation is to make it work.

fully agree bro :good:
i think our phone's hardwares are supporting this feature so maybe some programming is necessary for get this feature
ım waiting devs who can make that for implement this support into their kernel :good:
Arco explicit said that, it's not possible. Stop. There's only IN 5V circuit not OUT 5/3.3V circuit in the board. Maybe the component have the feature, but the board not.

And just by the way. Arco also said there is no fix for the white screen bug with rev.3 LCD´s without getting the fast discharge issue. Now this statement is obsolete and it got fixed in the kernel.

I don´t need a DMM (what you call a tester). All I need is properly reading the datasheet(which you obviously didn´t do at all) and some properly working code for this. The pins and wires are biderectional, so no need to disassemble the device. All you need is proper programming to make this work.
The only problem you could run into is because the chip itself is programmed once where the parameters are set. The rest is related to the kernel and ROM, not the hardware.
So before claiming again "because Arco said and what he says is holly and needs to be written into the bible" simply prove me wrong or stop telling us it´s impossible without giving more background why exapt telling because Arco said.
Arco said a lot of things not being doable on this device and finnaly he himself made them working. He is really a very smart guy but not a God.

Our chip supports otg but Samsung don't need it on our phone .. In their opinion more feature will make more value for such this device which they don't want to be..
so it will not work I thought and the reason is hardware ..
But good luck bro ?

As many of you are aware, the old MHL adapters aren't compatible with the Galaxy S III due to a change in the amount of pins, so Samsung introduced an Adapter to still make use of your current adapter.

Didn't actually check the link!
$10 is quite a rip off for like 5c worth of materials to fix a problem that Samsung made themselves.
+1 for waiting for third party ones.
Is the micro USB port on the S3 standard for everything else I dare shove in it?
So has Samsung given a technical reason why old MHL adapters won't/can't work and yet all data and OTG accessories still work?

Well, then I can only tell you that you only have the MHL thingy to complain about.
Mass storage and moving apps is gone with the way of the dodo. It's the same on the Galaxy Nexus and all Honeycomb and ICS tablets. The reason it used to work on the S2 is because it was a legacy device. I could go into a more detailed explanation if u want, but in short, it's Google's way of moving with the times, albeit with some changes that some people used to mass storage will not like.

I've already read the technical reason they gave about changing the file structure and moving away from more restrictive Fat32 format but Mass Storage isn't something that's "gone with the way of the Dodo" because iPhone has a big market for connecting to accessories over USB and without Mass Storage Android can't do that and can only use on computers with Kies installed, and not transferring to external memory is massively restrictive and Android is gonna end up like iPhone where if I install a few big games like Nova 3 i'll run out of space and be forced to buy a 32 or 64gb SGS3, and that's the kind of times I don't want to move with.
So there's no moving apps to sd card? Not even with app2sd or anything? What about with root?

And one other problem is because of the new file structure some Apps can't find the external SD so if you use like an emulator on some you might have to put the Roms onto internal memory, and there will be more Apps with same problem so that internal memory's gonna be eaten up very quickly, so like I said before I'm really not happy with Google and Samsung lately.
Now that the source code has dropped, are any developers considering adding USB OTG/Host Mode anytime soon? I'd be willing to donate if someone got it working or was actively working on it.
For anyone wondering what this is: USB OTG/Host Mode allows you to connect other devices to your E4GT (IE: Flash Drive, HDD, Keyboard, Monitor, DLSR Camera, etc.) and use/access them. It is supported by the International SGS2 and the US Carriers, but for some reason Sprint disabled this functionality in the kernel.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802740 credit for this link goes to dberend! It's a usb otg helper link, but our phone are missing some modules if I understand correctly. They end in the file extension ".ko"
Last I heard Agats kernel was recognizing that a OTG device was connected! I'm not sure if it is working completely yet though.
Responses are appreciated!

USB OTG/Host Mode lets you connect a USB device to your E4GT, like a Thumb Drive, External Hard Drive, Keyboard, xBox Controller, etc. It's useful for a variety of reasons.
If this is in the wrong section, will a mod move it? Thanks in advance!

Yeah its a very useful feature. I heard a few people mention the E4GT supports it, but that it was disabled in the kernel
It doesn't appear that very many people are interested in this, should I let this thread die?

I would use this function for sure.. even though you can already make these by combining a power cord with some kind of microUSB-to-USB adapter.. basically a "powered" mUSB-to-sUSB adapter..
Before I read about them, I bought an adapter that I thought would work, but not the right one.. then I read about making them yourself is possible.. but I never tried it yet..
If they were an already built accessory, I would use it to mount a multi-port USB hub, then connect a keyboard and mouse.. I of course would need to figure out how to use both the HDMI out AND the USB hub.. it would be seriously sick to use your phone literally like a mini PC!

i read the same article, the article explained how to use your old charger cable as otg cable or manually creating an otg cable at home.
i checked and verified by opening my own otg cable and found the same circuit as the circuit shown in that image.
i was wondering if the phone is not sending any power to the cable/pen drive.

Bro it's been a year to this post... I don't have my grand now.. It fell in the washing machine its funny... But sad this happened somewhat in May... I have a Samsung Galaxy star pro now and have started development for that phone.. As for otg...it won't work... See my second or third post in this thread about the pins..

dude, i guess you are taking about this article tech.firstpost.com/news-analysis/how-to-make-your-own-usb-otg-cable-for-an-android-smartphone-29503.html
i read this complete article and checked my own otg, i found it as shown in the image/article mentioned by you.
i believe if one want to short the pins, it can be done at phone's external plug end.
Please help me to start with the otg development.
i will be thankful to you
as it is a kernel's thing as per my research till now.
and i am sorry about your grand may its soul rest in peace.:crying:
Hello guys,
Is there any of you try to connect external disk (microsd) over OTG?
Technic service is replying our question (LG Turkey) that this model was supporting OTG.
But some of my friends tried some kind of OEM OTG cables (from local shops) but not worked with our G.
For example same cable worked with galaxy S3.
Can we use OTG function in this device? if yes, how? (direct, root, custom rom...) and which cable? (trademark, link...)
Is there any last user experience with this issue?
Thanks allready...
No, you can't use OTG on OG. The only way (but not guaranteed) is to convert your OG to Nexus 4 and then install kernel with OTG support, but it's very risky and never confirmed if works.

"The USB port has yet another feature - it enables USB On-The-Go. You'll need an adapter for that too (again, there isn't one in the box) but this one is fairly straight forward - you plug it into the Optimus G and plug a standard USB cable on the other end."

It was said long time ago, that this review is lying. OTG doesn't work on OG, it's confirmed by many users.
And cable strictly for OG is just a fake cause every device has the same micro-USB ports so every cable would work with every device only if they have OTG support.

Hello,
I'm a new member and I have a Xperia M C1905. I tried posting this in the "correct" thread but since I have less than 10 posts
I can't post it in (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2762698)..
Anyway, first a bit of background: I found a Qi Charging adapter for my Xperia M and I want to use it.
However, this cheap adapter doesn't have a resistor between the D+ and D- of the USB otg port
(in fact both D+ and D- are not connected, or FLOATING). The msm_otg refuses to detect the charger
and the battery will go flat, even if it's connected and setup properly (on top of a qi charger).
Luckily, there seems to be a possible solution for this already.
dubidu has already figured out how to enable
"floating charger" with the Moto G.
His tool works by setting a module parameter "floating_charger" to Y for the msm_otg module.
So in theory all we need is to update the msm_otg module with the following patches:
usb: msm_otg: add charger detection for floated D+ and D-
USB: msm_otg: Fix a bug in charger detection procedure
(In fact, it would be a good idea to update msm_otg with all the extra patches, these can be found here: android.googlesource.com. Unfortunately, I don't know the base kernel so I can't make the diff myself - If someone could point me to a github repository, I can make a "pull request" there).
With this patches, the motofloatingcharger app should work and AOKP - yet again - could provide additional goodies for people who flash custom roms .
So, my question: can someone please help me to contact the devs, so they can apply the patches?
Regards,
Chr

I think @hashroot or @FrOz3n should be able to implement it to the kernel and then you can test

I could test it myself, but I'm unable to find the local manifest for aokp which they are using for the xperia m.
I would be grateful if anyone could point me to it. (I've some experience with android-x86 builds, so this should
be doable).
Regards,
Chr
Update:
I've been able to get it working!
I found a usable local_manifest [0] and build cm-11.0 with a patched kernel for my Xperia M and flashed it.
The device is now "charging" wirelessly as I write this (damn... I would love to make a video too, but I can't
since I don't have enough posts yet. Oh well!)
Anyway, for anyone interested: I made a branch for the android_kernel_sony_msm8x27 and
issued a Pull Request [2] for the freexperia project. This way, it will be picked up by the
cm-11.0 or aokp project automatically. hopefully: all future version will come with it.
Oh: and here's the pull request: (as it contains a bit of additional information too).
I got a Xperia M C1905 a few days ago and I've been trying to add support
for the Qi charger adapter (They are called M3-Y05, but I guess any will
do) that I bought as well [0]. The main difficulty is that the QI charger adapter
connects to the usb-otg port and (because it was cheap), it doesn't have
an 200 ohms resistor between to the D+ and D- lines. Hence, the "stock"
firmware (and cm 11.0) doesn't detect the charger and the phone won't charge.
However, while browsing for a possible solution, I came across a mod for
the MOTO G [1]. The op has the same qi charger adapter hardware and
the same issue. However, he discovered that for his kernel, there's an
option to enable a "floating charger" support. So, I tracked down the
necessary changes and applied them on my own kernel... and lo and
behold: It's working!
I've already tested if these changes affect other usb-otg functions like:
charging via sony's original charger
connecting a peripheral device (in this case usb mouse)
connecting to a PC (mtp and charge) And it passed all tests so far with flying colors!
Please consider this feature branch for merging. If you have comments or
requests please let me know!

This is the same plain CM11 with QI Charger Support.
@xdachr Compiled a 4.4 Kernel Yesterday I might release it soon
By the way instead of uploading the whole zip you could post a separate boot.img from the build I think 4.4 Boot.img's are universal I installed AOKP Boot.img on CM11 once just out of curiosity :silly:

Hm, what about kernel modules? aren't they part of the system.img?
And without a proper wlan.ko - module, I think the WLAN chip won't work.

Well, I'm using one of these:
Code:

(Note: There are similar models of this which have the usb cable at a
different angle or position, but if you are capable of holding a soldering
iron, you can easily solder the usb leads onto another position. )

That's indeed a serious problem. I've seen a grand total of three very pricy QI
charger pads on Amazon India. And not a single one of the qi charger receivers .
Furthermore, the situation isn't much better on Ebay, either?! Many sellers there
just won't deliver it to India, even when they say: world-wide delivery?!
(I wonder how this stuff is sold in India, can you tell me how you get your mobile phones?)

I see, visited the online - shop... and nothing there. Really disappoint. But oh well, if they
don't want the business then go straight to the source: aliexpress.com and alibaba.com
(You know these sites do you?! If not CHECK 'EM OUT NOW! They have it all)
(Stupid geoip switch, But I bet the sale for a qi receiver and charger pad is world-wide):
Code:

Thanks for this. I wasn't aware thus could be modified in software, and so soldered a short. It sticks out though, so this is much appreciated. Hopefully, it'll be integrated into fxp!

FYI: Ron Gokhale has merged the changes into the official freexperia:cm-11.0 repository :victory:.
So all future ROMs will support floating charger without any additional modifications or tools
(it's enabled by default - as per battery charger spec 1.2).
Thanks everyone who contributed :highfive:.
