(Q)bootloader and rooting

hi to every one i would like to ask before i unlock my bootloader and rooting stuff. im presently on stock rom right now with firmware 2.3.4 baseband ver. -64 and build number .62. i alredy browse threads and guides about this but unfortunately i was not able to find answer.
ok my question is this.
1. will it be possible for me to install custom rom if im just going to unlock my bootloader but not rooted?
2. there are topics about easy rooting on gen. discussion .i just like to ask,is it possible to disregard downgrading process from .62 to .42 if the bootloader is unlocked for the rooting process. since i dont want to downgrade.there has been issues of bricking the phone if your going to downgrade and update afterwards via ota.
3. can anyone give me updated guide for unlocking bootloader and rooting based on my current firmware.

Yes, custom roms are usually (always?) prerooted, so it gives u root permissions. Bootloader is needed to flash custom kernel.

If the bootloader is unlocked ur phone gets bricked after update. However u can downgrade with locked bootloader, next root and than update. If u want lock bootloader use file attached (unpack rar archive and flash ftf using flashtool).
On the other hand u can install CWM and use RootXperia.zip (attached) to root.

1. 2.3.3 - use SuperOneClick Method (maybe work with 2.3.4 i dont use it) or RootXperia.zip or custom Kernel/Rom
2. 2.3.4 - use RootXperia.zip or Custom Kernel/Rom

im really planning to do that.but before proceeding i would like to ask if it is compulsary to downgrade to .42 to gain root access cuz my im on .62 right now.
what do you think should i do first unlock bootloader or the rooting process.?

actually i already tried to unlock my boot loader but in typing imei process the instruction wanted me type 14 digits but upon seing my phones imei it has 15 digits. haha

first what i did when i began to want root my phone was unlocking bootloader and than flashing DooMKernel which is prerooted and i didnt need to do it myself (also i got OverClocking, UnderVolting and some other things which i hadnt with stock kernel)

no problem. in xda app if u touch post for the moment u got menu. slide it and there is bouquet of flower with "thanks" (i think cause i have polish version)

ive been reading topics about this but up to now my confidence is not that hi to proceed. im on htc desire s before which is rooted. i think im going read more before proceeding..im new to arc society.hehe.thanks again.

Unroot to get Warranty back?

Hi Guys ,
can I unroot to get warranty back? Never ever flashed a custom rom nor I unlcoked bootloader.. Furthermroe I want to know If rooting is verfifable?

As long as you don't tell them I guess. However if you need to unlock your bootloader too for any reason they will need to know and thus it will invalidate your warranty. If you just want root etc then it should not be an issue. It's more of a moral issue really. If you do a repair in PC Companion it will return the phone to factory defaults and they should not be able to tell.

btw root doesn't void the warranty..you can still claim the warranty even if your phone is rooted.

Not strictly true, Sony don't recommend rooting hence no official way to root..... So yes you would lose your warranty but flash using pc companion and root is gone.
Unlocking bootloader will lose your warranty either officially our by unofficial ways.

But CWM, flashing zips/ROMs? Yep, there is so many tutorials, for so many versions and cases. I'm unable to read everything and need answer from someone who 'just know it'

even if ur phone is not rooted unlocking bootloader voids ur warranty .. U can always get ur warranty back by flashing generic firmware using flashtool....... And ofcourse u can relock it using flashtool...

hey tigerstylezz..
dude, you can root your phone without unlocking bootloader..and unlocking boot loader voids your warranty,
go to google and search how to root arc s without unlocking bootloader..there will be a forum from androidauthority.com..just go to that one
root your arc s using the method..this will not void warranty or unlock your bootloader..it will still be locked..
so now download a app from the market called xparts..specially made for xperia phones...open it and it will ask for superuser permissions..
select allow..and then install custom recovery using the app..now that you have custom recovery installed, you can now install a few custom roms to your xperia arc s like jelly sanwhich...just skip the flashing kernel part in instructions of installation of rom..now flash rom using custom recovery..unlocking your bootloader only allows you to flash new kernels...so some roms work on stock ics kernel of xperia arc s
some of those roms are..jj's hybrid rom, jelly sandwhich, xperia ice bean and search more roms that work on locked bootloader on arc s on xda forums..and if you wish to unlock your bootloader.. you just do that and then you can unlock it by flashing a .ftf file on your device..just search it on google as xperia arc s relock bootloader.ftf file and download it and flash it through xperia flashtool...

Flashing zips (which contain themes/mods) with cwm you only need root.
There are very limited roms available that will install with unlocked bootloader,I think only pureness Rom is available, you need unlocked bootloader to install custom kernels which the custom roms support.

Thanks for all the Answers - Yes I know that unlocking Bootloader and Rooting are two different things... I just asked if it is verfifable by Sony if you had rooted your device? Isn´t there any Hidden file saved in the Ramdisk or whether where it saves the Permission Lock? And if not - during the UPDATE Process ON SEUS OR PCCompanion - don´t they SAVE any .Log or something and send it to the Servers, with the IMEI? I knot that I can just usually flash back and things.. Just wanted to know if Sony can find out that I ve rooted ?
BTW: For root .587 I have to flash a kernel (FTF) Downgrade - and then Root - and Upgrade it. So you can Flash Kernels.
I just come from the X10 --> Arc S which is way better I think( Still love the X10 , but Arc S my new love)

You can flash Themes etc.. which are realiable to your curent ROm - you can flash MODS , apps everything , that doesnt requires Unlocked bootloader

if you rooted your phone without unlocking the bootloader just flash a clean firmware to get back your warranty
if you unlocked the bootloader then there is no chance to get back your warranty

Nice info.
Although I've been on some scenario where my handset wont boot up, so I cant revert my ROM & relock my bootloader.
Turns out it was hardware failure and after fixing it, the tech guy found I was using custom ROM, hence my waranty were void

Hi all,
Just got my Xperia S and really love the phone with fantastic design and awesome screen. I really intend to gain root access for my phone to troubleshoot the battery drain issue further (and using some app for better control over the setting). Here's a few queries I have (and some partially answered by some of my searches on the forum):
Will I get any OTA or official firmware update shall I just root my phone with locked bootloader? (I won't mess with custom recovery or ROM)
I suppose I could still claim my warranty. But is there anyway to remove any traces completely to prevent them from finding out? Just removing the superuser app?
If in the future I would like to have access to custom recovery so that I could flash ROM, I suppose I must unlock the bootloader right? (at least until someone gets a workaround for locked bootloader)
The tool I will use for rooting is by Bin4ry. I am on the latest ICS firmware.

Yes you'll definitely get official update
To remove trace completely just flash an official ROM via flashtool (official fw can be obtained at dev section)
No can install some stock based Custom Rom and CWM in locked bootloader
Eg : XTX,dualcore,Xcream,etc
What you can't do is flash a kernel. You'll need to flash a kernel to install Cyanogen Mod or Paranoid based rom

Hmm, I guess I could get official update, just worry that I would lose root during the update. I think I could still try to retain my root using some app right? (LOL, I am a bit outdated about all these stuff - was using a HTC Desire where 2.3 is the best we could go)
I am observing that my screen is a bit yellowish throughout, perhaps I will send in for a warranty before I do anything.

Root Xperia S (6.1.A.2.55)

Hello,
I'm one of those lucky guys who got the 2.55 build number.
Wandered around the forum for some time, seeking for a way to root my phone, but don't want to risk before being 99% sure that this may work.
As I understood, Bin4ry's method won't work with my phone, which results in need of unlocking the bootloader.
I checked its status and it shows that its Unlockable = Yes.
Now, let's say I unlock the bootloader, what should I do next? Flash a prerooted ROM?
All I could've found on forums was "UNLOCK YOUR BOOTLOADER" and "BIN4RY'S METHOD" stuff. Maybe because people were posting about this 2.55 thing alot. Maybe not.
All I need is a n00b friendly tutorial.
Btw, I'm on 4.0.4 ICS, which is pretty obvious.

Unlock your bootloader and just flash an auto rooting kernel.
But if you're unlocking the bootloader you may as well flash a Jellybean rom anyway

Hi, I hope the OP doesn't mind, but I'm kinda in the same situation and I need some help from you guys, because I am currently a Samsung owner (please don't throw rocks ) and I don't really know much about flashing ROM's on Sony.
So... I have with me my brother-in-law's Xperia S with 6.1.A.0.453 (ICS 4.0.4), never been tampered with, just bought, updated to ICS and rooted with Bin4ry's method.
All great, but I was hoping to flash 6.1.A.2.55, because I heard it is the latest.
But now the hard part comes, the phone has Locked Bootloader and I can't unlock it because "Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status > Bootloader unlock allowed" says NO.
That being said, if I flash the .55, how do I root it?
I updated and rooted an Xperia U a while back, using a method of changing the kernels, something like this:
Flashing the ROM I want (the one that can't be rooted)
Flashing an older kernel from a stock Rom witch was rootable
Root it
Flash the kernel of the last ROM, and root remains.
Do you guys thing that this method will work on Xperia S?
Flashing .55
Flashing an old kernel (from 6.1.A.2.45 or other that can be rooted)
Root it
Flashing the kernel of .55 again, and hoping that the Root remains.
Also, where could I find those kernels?

I really hope there will be a one-click root for 4.4.
It's weird all phones from the competition are easily rootable but someone 4.3 on Sony is so complex.

They've closed alot of the bugs that were being used for the previous root methods.
IF you don't care about your data, what you CAN do is to revert to an older FTF, root, backup your TA partition, then go from there... it's a pain... but it works.

if u want your phone to be stuck in bootloop, go ahead with that method, else you follow the method which i posted. it's a long procedure, but it works!

I don't understand why someone would post bad directions like that. Also they are very similar to Doomlord's own instructions for rooting. He says to flash an old exploitable kernel and then run his exploit and then flash back.
Anyways, your method says to downgrade to .67 firmware, and I can't find that anywhere. Can I downgrade to .423 firmware and use Doomlord's root method instead? Should be the same results, right?
Also, is step 8 necessary? Do I have to flash back stock recovery or can I keep CWM?
And finally, using this method, how will we keep root when 4.4 finally arrives?

I also wouldn't take the risk to flash the Kernel of .423 over the .67 firmware.
Yes they are both Android JB 4.2. But you never know.
About 4.4, we will have to wait what will be the available methods.

yeah. that kernel method worked for previous firmware. now it won't work. and yeah you can downgrade to any rootable firmware. u are doing this just to backup TA so that you can lock BL. you can keep that advanced kernel. but you wont get OTA updates, better to flash stock kernel and lock your BL. when 4.4 arrives, if no rooting kit is available, you've to unlock BL, install advanced stock kernel which has custom recovery and install SU and flash back stock kernel and lock your BL

After you've rooted, but before you actually unlock your bootloader... if you install the dual boot recovery, you can make a backup of your TA partition information via TWRP as well as by using the other method... (do both to ensure you can revert)...
And then after you unlock your boot loader save ANOTHER TA backup... name them so you know which is which so you can re-lock your TA if you choose if you're running a stock kernel/rom and want the DRM keys back... but that way you don't have to go through the pain for unlocking each time...

Only had one small issue with the flashed zip/stripped FTF messing up the XZDualRecovery settings, but deleting xzdr.prop and rebooting fixed it.

When i was searching for, i really thought i was being crazy.

I cant wait to start theming my ZL, Some mockups cooking here to new skins, but can't test without that root.

if u go with method, u have to download those stripped files every time when new firmware arrives. which is kinda boring to download those huge files. whereas in that unlocking BL method, u download only kernels with recovery which is just 15 to 20MB
