S3 randomly shuts off! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

My phone randomly shuts off on me.
Does not start back up, as if the battery is pulled. Does this in sleep and in use, but it is not frequent, on 2-3 times a week.
Seems to happen when its tapped just right, the phones never been dropped, and about 6-8 months old.
More info
Sprint model on virgin.
Cyanogen mod 10.1.3 stable
Team win recovery.

Could be the starting symptoms of Sudden death syndrome. Has it done this on stock also?
Sent from my LG-LS970

Not that I am aware, last time I ran stock was to change my number and if I'm correct it would not connect to the network.
All is great except the random shut off, when it first started it only did it once ore twice a month, than it got bad for two weeks once every day or two, then it stopped for a month and randomly happened today in my pocket
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Seems to me like a power button issue. I would try stock for a bit and if it continues, take it in to be checked out. They usually replace those.

wrong post...please delete

what causes the power button issue?
because i rarely use the button, i always hit the home button to turn it on and it usually times out to sleep, i always assumed the home button would go first.
if i remember correctly the shut off problem came soon after the ota cyanogen rc1 for my current rom.
i installed stock touchwiz yesterday and i had no data, shows bars but no 3g. states disconnected under phone settings.
everything works great under cm10 other than the shut off issue, like i said i hacked this phone to work with virgin mobile, so i doubt samsung will honor any warranty

Today my phone shut off on me, and froze during boot up. Is it time for a new phone?

Odd Automatically Turned Off

went to hit the power button to use my phone and nothing happened... not sure if it was froze or if the power button stopped working... i held it down and nothing... was sitting at a black screen...
had to pull the battery to get it working again... has anyone had this happen? is the phone actually on and the power button stopped responding or did it shut down and the power button stopped responding?
4.0.2 unlocked... not rommed... adw launcher
I had that happen once. I went to pick it up and turn it on, and it was just dead. like it just powered off by itself.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
It's called the Black Screen of Death. Usually happens when a custom kernel doesn't play nice with your phone.
I was on stock 4.0.2. No root.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Yeah it's happened to me anywhere from 3-5 times these past few weeks. Either that or it will just reboot itself randomly. I'm not complaining though... it's nowhere near as bad as my Nexus S was. Lol

this happened to me twice today for the first time ever, am on a custom rom but havent updated in a few weeks... Im seriously thinking its Chrome for android...as thats the only thing i changed recently (google voice updated too). and i seriously havnet used my phone lately other than using Chrome.
It happenned to me once since I've had my nexus. Don't even think about why
Happened to me today, screen was blank but the LED notification was blinking. Asked my fren to call me and it was ringing meaning the phone was still on. Had to remove the battery and put it back in and then it was fine.
Mine turned off on its own last night, it was when I plugged in my charger while it was turned off at the mains.. very strange.
are any of you on 4.0.4?
hopefully not
I haven't seen any shut downs or random reboots on 4.0.4 yet. It's been less than a week though, so we'll see.

The only time my phone has ever shut off with the power taking 5 or so seconds to work has been because of a music app Slacker.
It shuts my phone down randomly. I think it is not fully compatible with ICS.

[Q] non-rooted T999 hardbricked itself gradually - ideas?

Hi,
I got my SGS T999 right after release. It's been running fine up until recently when a number of things started failing progressively right after the Jelly Bean update, and now it's hardbricked. This is a non-rooted phone. No apps installed from sources other than Play Store and Amazon.
Just prior to the Jelly Bean OTA:
1. All the sensors stopped working - gyro, proximity, etc. They all stopped working. They wouldn't come back on a restart either. I was getting ready to try a factory reset when the Jelly Bean OTA came.
2. Updated to Jelly Bean, sensors started working again, but the phone would randomly restart, in my pocket, just sitting there on the table...
3. On Saturday I used the phone a little, just like normal. About 45 minutes after making a call and not using the phone again, I noticed that the phone was dead. I plugged it in thinking something had drained the battery.
4. When trying to power it up, it would vibrate once, sometimes twice but the screen stayed black.
5. I tried taking the battery out for a while, replaced it and turned it on - it started booting up, but before fully initializing, rebooted again and then went black.
6. Once i got a charging screen when i plugged it in, but could never replicate.
7. Became totally hardbricked. Can't get into download mode, can't factory reset, nothing at all. No vibrate, nothing. I fully charged the battery to make sure, and nothing. It's totally dead and unresponsive.
Is there anything I can do besides request a warranty replacement? What could have happened?
Thanks.
With all those issues you were having prior to updating it sounds like a malicious app... which can be installed from the play store there are plenty (porn apps and fart apps, many many more) yes issue for a replacement.

Can you get it in download mode?
Volume down + home + power
If so just Odin the stock rom again.

I would definitely take it in to get it replaced. Your still under manufacturer warranty if tmobile will put up a fight.

Thanks for the confirmation. I've requested a replacement under warranty, hoping it's a new one and not a refurb.
Thanks!
For informational purposes, here's the conclusion (so far):
On receiving the warranty replacement SG3, I tried turning on the original once more, as a test. To my surprise, after several days of being powered off, it came back up and seemed to be working fine. It ran normally for a day and a half, at which point it then began to reboot, after turning on the GPS for the first time (whether that's actually related or not is unknown, just a note). It would either reboot immediately on the first screen unlock, or it would reboot while booting up.
Fortunately, this did give me an opportunity to factory reset. For anyone suspecting it had something to do with a rogue app, the phone would reboot on the very first initialization screen, where you enter your gmail account info.
So I restored to the warranty phone, which seems to be working fine except for the hands-free speaker which has some constant background static.

Anyone else get the Sleep of Death on JB roms?

So every since the JB roms, my phone gets the sleed of death 1-3x a day. Sometimes, it will be immediately after a text message, i will see the indicator blinking,,but as soon as i hit the power button...NOTHING. It will then at that point have gone into the 'SOD'. There are other times where nothing is going on,,,and it still will randomly go into the SOD. THe only common thing is going into sleep mode cuz i havent touched it for a while.
I have been getting this on FK23,FL04, and FL16. ALL of these roms have been the stock leaks/stock recovery. Only thing modified has been addition of root/Superuser......
Could it be the phone itself??
I thought I was having this problem as well. Random turnoff and won't turn back on without a batt pull.
Turned out it was the swollen battery issue though. Check that.

I've tried all three & never experienced any SOD.
I recently got that on three different ROMs ..my remedy is unroot Odin flash fi27 and root fi27 Odin flash and start again ..oh when you unroot complete stock perform a stock factory reset

Yeah I had the same issue on the stock leaks. I am now on the goodness ROM (for about a week) and has not done the SOD since.
I was using the Odin one clicks for FK and FL builds. just followed the OP for goodness installation. So in my case, it seems like the installation method was the issue.

I had the same problems with all the recent builds. It turns out that it was my battery that was causing it. Went to the Sprint Store and got a new free battery which is free if you have insurance.
I've noticed SOD (and only just heard this term from a friend yesterday) on Paranoid Android 2.54 about once every day to 3 days. Just switched to Codename Android to see if that helps (and to try something new )
BTW, instead of a battery pull, I was always able to recover by holding the power button for about 8 seconds which will force a power down, another 2 seconds and it reboots. Very useful if you have a substantial case on the phone and don't want to remove it to pull the battery.
JB fl16 is one of the few roms I have never had the sleep of death with. This is a very weird phenomenon......

[Q] URGENT HELP:Phone won't boot

I've had they Hercules for just over a year now but have only been using it for the past four months. I have only downloaded educational apps. However, yesterday i was not using it and came back to find it vibrating every 2-3 seconds. I removed the battery and left it out for an hour. When i replaced the battery, the phone began to reload but stopped during the boot, made a noise I've never heard before and began to vibrate as if going into recovery/download mode. I have been running ics for the past 4 months. The phone does not boot at all and is very frustrating . I have also tried charging it with no luck. Can anyone assist me with this problem??
sounds like you have the dreadful power button fail it gets a little jammed up try sticking a toothpick or something skinny in there and wiggle it a bit see if that works for you if not check if your still under warranty are you rooted or stock ICS?
u have a bad power button. try unsticking it.
Agreed. A friend had a similar issue and his power button was stuck.
I'm rooted and the warranty is up

Strange enough this just happened to me 10 minutes ago. I did manage to get the phone to boot after slapping the hell out if my power button which gave me the only means to get into recovery so now I can comment from experience. Ive been running pac for 3 weeks. Just yesterday my phone started doing really weird ****, dont know if it's just coincidence, calls would go through to random people, every time I clicked gallery I got a random reboot, I couldnt call voicemail, and trying to change wallpapers gave a reboot. Today I was changing a wallpaper and boom random reboot then began the loop and vibrating. A few things I noticed while this was happening, if I attempted to go into recovery the samsung splash screen appeared followed by the stock kernel splash( samsung and the blue bar at the bottom) which made me believe it wasnt the power button but indeed rom or kernel problem, also my led flashed once while going through the vibrate loop and I know the power button has nothing to do with that. I did manage to get pac to boot about 4 times by slapping the hell out of my power button but it went back to the loop after a few seconds so the next time I managed to get it to boot I held the power button and booted to recovery. Once I was able to get in to recovery I restored a liquid smooth back up. Ive powered the phone off and on with no problem. Now I'm just waiting to see what happens through out the day. I was running pac with cerux when this happened. I truly believe this is not a hardware problem at all until I get it again with another set up. If you need help I getting your phone to boot I could possibly be of assistance so pm me unless you want to keep getting responses from people who haven't experienced this at all. This was the single most scariest experience Ive had since I ve been flashing, even worse than my brick because I knew I bricked immediately.

Please help!! Phone reboots randomly even on complete stock unrooted.

Okay, I've had my S3 since July of 2012. It has worked perfectly up until about 3 weeks ago. It has just started rebooting randomly and it says it's not sending texts, but the people I'm texting say they receive the message that supposedly fails to send like 5 or 6 times. I've spent the last 2 weeks trying to find a solution online and couldn't find anything. I have flashed probably 15 different roms, including stock rooted. Now I am on complete stock unrooted with stock recovery and I'm having the same issues. I used odin to return to stock. I only have 4 apps installed aside from the bloatware that comes with the phone. I'm sure the texting issue is with T-mobile's service, but the rebooting can't be. It's random, but I can always tell when it's about to do it because the screen will come back on right after I lock it and a few seconds later it will reboot. I have also taken the phone apart to see if the power button is jammed and it wasn't. I removed the actual power button and put it back in just to be sure. The phone still reboots randomly. Is anyone else having this issue and if so have you found a way to stop it? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you for looking.
I guess nobody has had these issues.
Sounds like a defective phone.

I have the same issue, pretty sure its the power button sticking. I'm using the home button to wake it up and a widget on the lock screen to lock it for now until I send it in.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
It stopped. I don't know what it was, but I ran stock for a few days and it just quit. Didn't do anything, but flash it back to stock, It did it for a couple of more days after I flashed it back to stock and then it just randomly quit. It's been almost a full week now and no random reboots. If it starts happening again then I will probably just get a replacement. I do have the insurance through T-mobile, but I don't want to pay the deductible.
Could some dust etc. making power button stuck causing reboots? It could also be unstable rom. If you are oc/uv 'ing the phone that could also do that
Sent from S♣ with XDA App
I had a similar problem with my Amaze, turns out one of the connector pins to the battery was miss aligned and would on occasion cross the line and short. Luckily nothing catastrophic but the phone would just reboot, sometimes continuously. After I straightened it out, problem solved.

I'm actually having this exact same issue, as well as crashes which seem to happen when copy/pasting text. Reboots, spamming people supposedly failed messages, the works....
And I'm with Sprint.
This is the SECOND S3 that has done this to me. I returned my first one after being fed up with it, guessing it must have been a hardware problem since I couldn't find anyone else that had this issue.. but this one has done it too, so I just figured I had to accept it....
phsh I wouldn't accept a piece of hardware that acts like that... bug 'em til they fix it or get you something else like the s4

Interesting to read this. I got my S3 in October, and it just started doing this. Twice it has simply rebooted, both times have been after I uninstalled an app. My phone is completely stock, unrooted. Never been rooted. I took it out of the box and updated it to JB and haven't done anything else. I'm not getting any messaging issues, just the reboots. I'm using Nova Prime, and uninstalling by dragging the icon to the trash can.
I'm not sure what caused mine to stop, but it did. It hasn't done it again since it stopped either. I flashed back to complete stock, unrooted and used triangle away. It was still doing it for maybe a week or two after that, but then it just stopped. It has been working fine ever since. That includes trying 4 or 5 different roms after it stopped just to see if it would do it again. Been running wicked on the same phone for months now without any of the issues I previously had. If your phone is doing this then I suggest either waiting to see if it stops on it's own like mine or get it replaced.
