[Q] Reconfigure compass?

The compass is about 10' to 15' out on my phone - i normally wouldn't care that much except the built in locations app uses the facing direction instead of the travel direction... so it looks like you are driving down a road diagonally.
Any ideas of how i can re-calibrate the compass - or make locations use the direction of travel instead of the compass?

Maybe it is a magnetic compass, and hence points to the magnetic north?
BTW I have the same with mine. Mine is about -15' out.
The GPS Status app has something to 'calibrate' with, but the results stayed the same IMO.

I know man, have the same issue. I have proper compass 'analog' and a digital one and the one on hd is a joke. Tried everything, it's still off. Most likely it's software issue here. Not sure though, but looks like it. Mine is -20 and less or more useless.

When using the one in my Hero, I could wave my hand in a infinity symbol shape (or figure 8 on it's side) out in front of me for a few seconds, that would get it fairly accurate for a little while. Haven't tried it on the DHD, but it might work?

I have exactly the same issue. Annoyingly it is also 10 to 50 meters off on my location......
HTC Hub also shows me 20 meters off of my location.......

Good i managed to calibrate it to be fairly accurate.
There is still a minor distortion which i assume is caused by battery but it's an improvement never the less.
Basically go to maps. Then hold your phone by pointing your screen towards the sky and start making infinity symbol in the air. In such way like if you were trying to paint it on the wall in front of you. Do it for about 30 sec, then it should show you a fairly accurate readings.

MadeIRu, could you describe your method in a lilttle more detail. I thought you had to hace your device towards the sky and make a movement like drawing an 8 horizontally al the time the device facing the sky. Thanks

What i did is:
Switch on any compass app or maps.
Point your device with your screen towards the sky, same way when it basically lies on the table.
Then start making 'infinity' like sign in the air while your screen points at the sky all the time.
Just like you wanting to paint an 'infinity' sign on the wall.

But i was pointing my screen upwards all the time, so my phone stayed in the same position at all times.
Do it for about 30 sec or so.

not sure if it will help you're situation though, i guess it's supposed to.

Anyone else saved by the "Detached Pen" alert?

I saw a post where someone called the missing pen alert a gimmick. Well the "gimmick" saved me a problem tonight. I was leaving the Vet's office with my dog pulling on the leash and dropped the phone. Thank goodness no damage, I just popped the battery cover back on and all appeared good. I was out the door when I got a beep-beep. Looked at the phone and got the Detached Pen message. I went back in and found the pen under a pet supply display 5 feet from where I dropped the phone. The thing is; It was late, I had a busy evening planned and was rushing to get places with no time to play with the phone. I would not have used the pen again until tomorrow at the earliest. Assuming it hadn't been swept up by the cleaning crew by then I doubt I would have thought to look at the Vet's office anyway. The gimmick saved me the replacement cost plus loss of use. This is my first Samsung and I'm impressed with how well thought out the device is. Good by HTC, I enjoyed our time together but I have found a new and better love.

Glad it saved you! It does work but it is just not as "techy" as it could be... It saved you this time but might not rely on it in the future as it is hit and miss for a lot of people, but I have left my stylus on my couch and it's went off a few times on me... Saved me from walking a longer distance! LOL

For some reason this feature doesn't work for me. I can take out the pen and walk around without it and it never alerts me.

Myself neither. Ensured it's enabled in the settings menu then tested by walking down the hall of my building and back with it in my office.

It was not working for me but after reading some other posts on the forum. .. It was said you need to not only ensure the feature for the alert is on. .. but the screen needs to be sleeping as well. .. tried it just now and it works fine for me ...I tried it earlier with the screen not sleeping and no alert. ..so confirmed the screen needs to be in stand by mode and not on.

I guess thats because you can already see in the notification bar the "S-Pen detached" notification when the screen is on.

I also thought it was a gimmick. I left my S pen on my table and walked around the room steadily holding my phone waiting for an alert. Nothing. Then I read in a thread here that holding the phone steady in your hand testing the feature doesn't really work. Holding the phone steady doesn't simulate "walking movement" it is as if your are sitting there with your phone in hand with your pen resting on your desk. The phone needs to jostle a little (my words) to activate the alert. I tested with a little "jostling" and it worked just fine.

is it possible to make a disable touchscreen toggle...

If you are reading this I'm sure you are wondering why would you ever need this. Let me explain....
About 2 months ago, I got the brand new 32gb wife nexus 7 2013. It's such a great machine I couldn't have been happier. Fast forward to 4 (only 4) weeks later. I'm standing at a bus stop I notice something that looks like a hair sticking out of the top of my touchscreen. I pull it and not only does the hair come out but also a time chunk of touchscreen and then the whole screen just cracks from top middle to left middle.. To so I was angry would be an understatement. Now that same weekend I had plans to go away. So I put the nexus back in its box. Went away and tried not to think about it....
On Monday when I got home I took it out of the box so I could take pictures and hopefully get some help from Asus... I was dismayed to find a second crack had appeared starting right at the end of the first crack going down to bottom middle.. Now the touch screen had hardly any working touch at all... After a few weeks of no help at all from Assholes I sorry I mean Asus I just gave up.
Until I tried a bluetooth mouse and suddenly I could use my nexus again. Now it wasn't Perfect but it was use able. So I got the idea to turn my nexus into a tiny notebook. I got a bluetooth keyboard with touch pad and it works great for one little problem. Since the crack, the nexus is showing lots of phantom touches especially when using cool reader so it starts randomly changing pages and chapters... Same with playing movies and anything like Web browsing. ..
So I was wondering if any of you devs or idea people out there new of anyway to either just disable the touchscreen with a code or is it possible to make a toggle so I could turn it off when I'm using the mouse or keypad???? Thanks for any help..

I would imagine there's a way to remove the touchscreen driver, which would render it inoperable. Check the threads on changing that driver out. Heck, you could probably flash a blank drive file over it.

Hey guys, just have a few questions for mto owners that I haven't seen answered anywhere. I am interested in picking one of these devices up but I have a couple reservations.
My main question is how does the display look in dark areas, like at a bar or while driving at night. I really don't want a bright cell phone screen strapped to my wrist, like how the samsung watches look. Is this one properly dim (especially without having to mess with settings) for night time settings so it just appears like a normal watch, or does it look too bright.
The other thing I was wondering was what are the major drawbacks, I have heard it can be annoying to drive with cause the screen goes blank and comes back one when making turns cause it thinks your flipping your wrist.
Is there a setting to keep the watchface on 24/7 as well, not crazy about having a blank screen strapped to my wrist?
Any help would be appreciated.

I am also looking into getting one, The one question I can help you with from my research is that you can have the screen always on but it will drain your battery faster and generally iv'e been hearing that it barely lasts a full day

Works well - screen lights up, but dimmed (if you have auto-brightness on). Low enough to still see, but not bright enough to brighten a room

Battery - Most days I'll get 15-18 hours, but then for no reason, I'll get terrible battery life the next day.
Screen does tend to come on when driving - never really notice it during the day, but at night you can definitely tell. I just changed my driving style (lower left hand and use right to turn wheel instead) and it rarely comes on. Not much of an issue when it does though.

Yes, you can keep ambiance on, but it does drain the battery fast. I had it on but then realized I'm not looking at the watch 24/7. When I do flick my wrist, 99% of the time it lights up really quickly.

agreed with Hustlaz 100%.
also, just want to add that before you get it, first determine why you want it. if you want it to keep track of your steps/heart rate as well as get notifications sent to your wrist, then this is ideal. if you are looking for a nice time-piece that lasts all day, then a conventional watch is a better route.
i've had mine for a little over 2 weeks, and battery life has been great - even with ambient on (although, the screen still goes blank with this setting, just not as quickly, so I have turned this feature off). most reviews you might have read about battery life we're probably before the 11/9 software update. i got mine just after this update, so I can't make a fair comparison here.
otherwise, the watch works as advertised - just beware that when using the google fit app on your phone, your phone's battery will take a major hit (but you can disable the activity detection). otherwise, no noticeable hit on my phone's (moto x) battery life.
essentially, the way it works is that the watch acts like a mirror for your phone - you can also mute certain apps notifications from appearing on your watch.
my only concerns is that the steps data does not sync from my watch to my phone properly (hoping that the google fit app will be updated to accept this with activity detection disabled or at least fix the battery drain), and that when viewing those google now cards (such as weather, sports scores, traffic, etc) on my phone and I swipe them away, they also disappear from my phone - would like to keep them on my phone. I'm sure there is a setting to adjust this, just have not had the time to see for myself.
the good news is that you can buy one at Best Buy, try it out for a week, and if you don't like, you can return it. problem is that you may actually like it too much whereby you won't want to return it and you find yourself keeping your watch on all the time.

Need help with golfshot gps app

does anyone else have the golf shot GPS app installed on their Sony SmartWatch 3 and if so how do you get it to work as a standalone GPS. I can't for the life of me get it to work. if I click on the app on the watch it just says loading I think and spins and then disappears. I can get it to pop up when I use the app on the phone but all its doing there is just giving me the reading from my phone. I want to be able to use just the watch as the GPS like it says it can be. Any help would be appreciated.

There’s no way to use it as a stand-alone app. You have to start the round on your phone and then start the app on the watch. The good is that you can leave your phone in the cart as the yardage provided will use the GPS on the watch. Compared to my rangefinder, it was at times about 1-5 yards off, which I can live with. Scores marked on the watch will be reflected on your phone.
As for the battery, that’s another story. The round lasted me 4 hours and the watch completely died on the 16th hold. Having the GPS constantly on definitely does a number on the watch. Kind of sucks, but figure I can have a charger in the bag for a quick charge. All in all, I’m very pleased.

Standalone Golf Shot App

You may have answered your own question by now but yes I have Golfshot on a SW3 and you can select the course on your phone and once it's loaded to the watch it will stay there as the default course when you launch Golfshot directly on your watch...just close the app on the watch but don't end the round when you've used it.
I also turn on Aeroplane mode so that the Golfshot app, which uses the Google Fused Location Api to find out where it is, falls back to the internal GPS chip... as it uses the phone's GPS by default. That has the added benefit of 1) not draining the watch battery as quickly and 2) reducing on-board noise from WiFi and Bluetooth that impinges on the accuracy of the GPS.
I've found though that the watch running Golfshot stand-alone will only last maybe 14-15 pretty quick holes of a round without draining the battery flat....so I've written my own wear app that runs completely on the watch with it's own database. That has holes positions ,max 8 hazards per hole, shot measure etc and finishes a round easily with ~ 35% of the battery left! That database however extends to exactly two courses at the moment(!) so I'm looking for a way to add a Google Earth 'course mapper' to let users add their own.
The Wear app has been a bit of struggle for someone not used to Java, Android or the SDK ..but interesting..so I will press on and do the course mapper...or source one by some other means.

I'm using GameGolf on my phone to track my club distances and wanted GOLFSHOT on my watch so its easy to check distances without having my phone in my hand all day (which I did yesterday)
Seriously need something to make me keep my SSW3 don't wear a watch for normal activity in day to day life !

Appreciated but I sold the watch earlier this week the battery just wasn't up to the job for what I needed

It's a real shame that all the commercial apps I've seen have such awful battery life..probably because they make extensive use of the play services API whereas I use my own optimised routines for many things . My own app has pretty much the same features as the major ones, including up to 8 hazards per hole, plus a compass pointer to the next tee or green centre and I can finish a 4 hour+ competition round with 30% plus battery left!
Still, good luck with whatever route you've gone down now.

Sounds 100% better, I kinda feel the whole watch isn't really overly useful pretty lame apps etc
