I am getting a warranty replacement phone today and I'm assuming it will have the md5 TW installed. I know the TW 4.3 leak is out currently which I'm assuming means the official update will actually be released soon. My question is this:
should I root my new phone as soon as it gets here or wait for the update before trying to root?
Do any of you know or anticipate any difficulties with rooting 4.3?
A related question, if I root when I get the phone but don't install TWRP or CWM will I still be able to get the 4.3 update when it's released?

Given the ICQ & Knox, I have a feeling rooting Stock 4.3 would be challenge. I'd root now. But after the update comes, it will wipe your Root. Your best bet, flash the Leaked version of you want or wait for the Root66 to be released after the official release.
First, if you wait for an OTA, you might be waiting several weeks after the update is released.
Imo it doesn't matter what you do, there will likely be a root66 firmware and roms available before you ever get the OTA.
Re-read my OP for my 4.3 Rom. Updated.
I seriously doubt Knox will be included in the official firmware. If I'm right we will only need worry bout seLinux.
Though it'll be a little more of a hassle, I don't think rooting 4.3 will be much of a problem.

Thanks for the answers, good to know it shouldn't matter much. I guess I'm still gun shy from having had an htc sensation, with that if you hadn't rooted before one of the updates you were a little screwed and had to do several more steps to root.

I couldn't find anything regarding this on the first pages and other threads are old so I was hoping you guys can help me out.
I had a locked operator Gnex and by using Galaxy Nexus ToolKit v7.3 provided here I successfully rooted, unlocked and installed stock JB (bigxie_maguro_JRO03C) on my device.
So now the issue that I have. I'm gonna give the phone to my gf who will be traveling often without me so I want her to have a stock device to get all future OTAs from Google.
How do I install stock recovery, ( maybe even unroot?) and which other settings should I change in order to get OTA installs without failures?
A step by step guide is not necessary but would help me :silly:
Thanks
I used a method found on galaxynexusforum, I can't post url but just google for "[HOW TO] Return to Stock Using Odin (VZW and GSM)".
I received the 4.1.1 OTA just a couple of days ago.
i think we can still receive OTA update even the phone is rooted as long as it is stock JB JRO03C as what i see from posts from other threads.
anyone can confirm this?

Stock without files REMOVED or modified.
Adding SU doesn't change the ability to get an OTA.
A custom recovery does, however.

I have to download this file
yakju JRO03C from IMM76I and use Method 1 - CWM 5.5.0.2 (i.e., NON-touch) recovery installed ? After I do this the update will erase CWM and my device would look like its a yakju model that just got JRO03C update right?
Hey XDA! I recently perm-rooted my SGS3 T-mobile versionT999 using the QCOM Toolkit and Odin and I flashed custom CMW recovery 6.(whatever) and did backups of all my stuff like data, system, EFS partition and more. It also renamed my recovery restore files. I read a few things regarding the OTA update of JB coming out soon and heard that if it is updated it could actually turn s-off back on and mess up your root and mess up a bunch of other things that I've done.
First off I would like to ask for some clarification on this subject as to what exactly will happen if the OTA updates to JB and if it will automatically be prevented or if I have to do something to keep my phone from automatically upgrading to JB on its own. Also if it turns out that I cannot do the OTA JB update should I just flash a custom JB rom or possibly flash a stock release of the JB rom?
Secondly I wanted to ask about the flash counter. Currently I have not flashed anything but CWM (twice cause I tried to flash touch but it failed) I have not flashed any roms or kernels or radios yet. Has my flash counter already been tripped? What exactly will trip the counter? I also read something about resetting the trip meter and flashing everything back to stock including unrooting. Can someone post a link to a guide(s) that have steps for that? (Trust me I've been looking on XDA for a few hours trying to answer all these questions myself but I cant find some of them and I figured asking and having them answered all in one place would be much easier and helpful to me and others as well). In the future I may look into flashing another kernel so I can overclock and also some other roms. Another question arises though: What exactly is and insecure kernel ( I believe thats what they're called) and also what is an insecure boot img? Sorry I have so many questions but theres a lot of information to take in when a new phone receives root and gets a bunch of new possibilities!
One final question until new ones arise. What exactly are these new builds I keep reading about? Ive seen "T999UVALEM", "uvalh2", "uvalh3" , "UVLI2,3 & 4", "UVDLI3", "UVDLH3", "UVALG1", and "ULVH2" and I assume there are many more haha.
What exactly even are these??? Its just too much to keep up with. Thanks to anyone who can clear up the confusion
Well I believe that about sums up my questions so if you can help me out I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks guys!
If you have cwm installed the OTA will fail.

So when I used the toolkit (which used Odin) to root and flash CWM the counter was tripped? Oh well I'm sure there will be workarounds later
Yes go ahead and flash a custom Rom. The developers will have a rooted version of the ota once it drops. And you can just flash that.

I don't know what the toolkit is but there was a guide in the development section on rooting without tripping the counter. Essentially it used Odin to flash a stock rom that had root injected and from there you could install cwm. As long as u flash roms with cwm it shouldn't trip the counter to my knowledge but if u use Odin to flash roms it will trip the counter

I searched and couldn't find an answer, maybe I'm just a bad searcher. I'm using the rt66 root injected stock rom and this morning I checked "software update" under "about phone" and it started downloading a 330+ mb file. I'm assuming this is the JB update that was just released, will it install correctly or should I stop the download? I don't want to brick my phone and I can wait until I'm home to update. Thanks.

IIRC I tried the same thing, it just gave me an error message, didn't actually update anything. You can try of course, I don't think it'll work. Also, if you're already root, you should probably install CWMRecovery or TWRP Recovery and make a backup of your phone, just so you can feel safe about it.
I would make a backup, go ahead and try the update. It'll probably fail and not harm your phone, or update properly. Good luck, and post back with results if you can, I'd like to know what happens
Thanks for the reply. I already have twrp and a nandroid backup. I think I'll wait until I get home to try and apply the update.

Just to let you know for when you get home from work, your update will fail. You're going to need to have Stock Recovery. There is a flashable floating around here somewhere.
The OTA will check for /system integrity. Meaning that it will look for all the /system/apps that are supposed to be there (meaning if you've deleted any bloat and not just froze it-fail), stock recovery, and NO ROOT (hence the OTA Rootkeeper). If any 1 of those are not as they should be, the OTA will fail.
Thanks for the reply again. So the easiest thing for me to do is first install root keeper and then find and flash the stock recovery. The only thing I've done is flash the root66 and then installed twrp, I haven't frozen any apps or deleted anything.

I've been told that its fine too do it, youll just lose root access, but mine had failed when I was rooted, so I just odined back to stock. Also, its recommended that you do a factory reset after the update. Had problems with Wifi calling myself, before I performed a Factory Reset. The root66 file for JB should be up soon. Its says uploading

I agree, Kies does suck, but it's the only way I've found to update and keep the ROM completely stock if the OTA fails. It updates via download mode, so it shouldn't matter if you're rooted, or even if you have a custom recovery.
I tried updating to JB using the OTA this morning, and it failed, but Kies worked fine.
Thsts whst the full fw Im hosting is for. You can flash it via odin if the ota fails. Just a better way imo. Glad you got it regardless though!

You can NOT use OTA updates after rooting. Period. Even if you get your device status to normal (which requires you to factory reset after rooting and running Triangle Away). OTA updates will only work on unmodified systems.
You can, however, get the update from sammobile and flash with Odin.

That was sheer blind luck then. OTAs are incremental updates, so you could just have easily have bricked your phone doing that.

Well, I was rooted and my device shows normal. I did not wipe data, factory reset or flash a stock ROM again after rooting. In fact, my phone showed modified immediately after rooted and mysteriously changed to normal the day after without me doing anything at all. The only possibility I can think of is that I used the jig as well as triangle away. If you have a jig, you might want to try and see if it works.

I guess you can quote Chainfire as being wrong as well then, because he says pretty much the same thing. OTA's are usually incremental updates, which means they patch existing files rather than replace them. IF you've just rooted and not done ANYthing else, you can probably get away with flashing an OTA. But if you've patched anything, expect trouble.
If you use ODIN to flash the OTA, you're probably safe as it has coding to fix such problems (as far as I can discern anyway), but flashing the OTA without is just asking for it.
OTA Updates are overrated, why wait for an OTA when you can download from sammobile at your leisure.

I have a Jig from my S2 days...how will inserting the jig reset it? Anything else need done other than insert it? Did not know the Jig would work with the N2...did not work with my S3.
With the phone off, insert the jig. It should boot into download mode. Then I reboot. That's all I did. I am not saying it will work, just that this was the only thing I did differently from others. Otherwise cannot explain why my status shows normal even though I am rooted and did not factory reset or wipe data after that.

My wife just checked her stock VZW HTC One, and her download has started. 617 MB in size! Go get your update now for those who are stock. I suggest waiting for our resident developers to do their magic on a custom stock ROM and more.
Note **I had to manually check for an update, and then initiate the download.**
Update: after the OTA downloaded, it did not prompt to install the update. Doing a complete shutdown, then starting the phone normally brings up the prompt for the update. Have fun!

If you're running a custom recovery, as far as I know the OTA won't run because of the custom recovery. I would HIGHLY advise waiting for a Stock rooted ROM (such as Santod's when it is available), or one of the custom ROM's once they are updated to include the OTA.
Got any before and after shots of the camera improvements with the new OTA?

What happens if I allow the OTA s-off with a custom recovery?

Just to clarify you can still update via OTA even if you are s-off if you are running the stock ROM and stock recovery. S-off on its own doesn't prevent updates. However, a custom recovery does.
Verizon pulled a fast one on me. I am thoroughly impressed.
Here's the link to the changelog:

Is it normal for the firmware download to run at 3G speeds? Device Management is running and even though I am connected to WiFi, it is extremely slow and my 3G icon is visible. Also, while I was downloading, I drove home and never went to 4G, which is unusual.

I even tried turning data off when connected to WiFi and toggling Global.

Can someone post the update before they accept it?
I want the Ota file if anyone has it. Thank you

My phone is S-off; rooted; with TWRP Recovery. I just received the notification for the Kit Kat update. I didn't download it, and don't know if it would install - but, I'm reasonably sure it would.

..... NO it will not. updates only work on the stock recovery.

May just be due to the number of people downloading at this point. What ROM are you using (Stock I assume, as well as stock recovery)?
Both the Wife and I are downloading it now. Hopefully this fixes her dead notification light issue. The light still works it just notify her of new messages, e-mails, missed calls, etc. I am sure hard reset would fix the issue, just trying to avoid having to spend a couple hours buried in her phone restoring it to how it was.

My bad.
Any real world comments on low light camera improvements?
Or anything else in the update for that matter.
Thanks...

It figures they push the update right after I flash a custom recovery

It might try to mask the camera issue, but since it's a hardware problem it won't actually fix it completely.

Lol! I'm sure you're right! Verizon had to do something though, and I'm sure HTC may have pushed Verizon on getting this update out asap!
