Any particular reason why you do not wish to update from your current android version to 4.1.2? This will definitely fix the issue. On a side note, TiBu is an awesome program and I gladly paid for the full version for the extra features and to support the dev. TiBu has definitely made life easier across a few phones and ROM flashings.

Rom Toolbox pro has all the tools you need to stop OTA updates
If you want to keep root and still update, you can use Voodoo OTA rootkeeper.

Anyone have an opinion on how much interference rooting this phone will cause for OTA?
This is my first Samsung phone after coming from a rooted MyTouch 3G slide, so I'm not too familiar with the effect rooting will have on OTA for this bad boy as opposed to HTC devices. As such, I'm torn between rooting now or waiting until after the OTA for WiFi calling (supposedly coming in November).
I'm aware that I can freeze apps with Titanium Backup as opposed to just deleting them, but never done that so not sure how easy it will be to make the OTA think the phone is stock and apply the update. Also aware that I can probably apply the APK for the WiFi calling manually (once released to the wild) but again, probably not as easy as just letting the OTA handle it.
Thanks for any thoughts.

From what I've been hearing around the forums, it sounds like a group is working on getting a WiFi-Calling "mod" working for rooted SGS IIs. So if you do root, you'd probably be able to do an aftermarket upgrade to obtain WiFi Calling, would be my guess.
Barring that, the Stock Kernel and Source are around, so I recommend grabbing them before you root, that way if you feel you need to un-root to get the OTA update, it should be relatively hassle-free. You can probably just go back to stock, update, then re-root.
As always, probably would want to do Nandroid Backup and back up all of your data/apps as necessary.

I had the same concerns myself, but agree that now that we have the ability to revert to stock if necessary, that fear is unfounded. I'm planning to root this weekend.

If you look into system processes developers usually put a process called Force kill ota update. If your just rooting for now the ota will still come even with a rooted phone.

Hey Killbynature, can you possibly explain that? Perhaps I'm reading it wrong, but a "Force kill OTA" process sounds like it would... force kill an OTA update, which seems contrary to your next statement that the OTA will still come if you are rooting.
I am curious about this as well could you clarify a little on what you mean?
Thanks

The developers only add that process in roms. If you just want root and a different kernel you still be able to get the update. Basically if you don't flash roms you'll be able to get the update still.

Makes sense now, thanks.
Yesterday I received a message from Tmobile that there is a new software update for my phone. I was at work and did not want to bother with it so I tried to say not to the update and the only option is to postpone for a maximum of 1 day. To get out of the message I selected the home key. I keep getting the reminder every 4 hours and the message will not go away from notifications drop down screen.
Tmobile seems very eager to push this update out, I rooted my phone about a month ago so I could use the tethering feature when I'm on call without the extra expense, also used Titanium to freeze the bloatware apps as well. Will this software update affect or undo my root access? Does anyone know if the update is good or bad?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Yes you will lose root but it can be rooted easily using the same method. This question has been answered over and over try searching a bit.

Thank you for the information I did see threads on the subject but they were on older software updates.I did not run across one that talked about this latest update, I did not know if there was something different or if the the new update made it difficult to re-root. Some updates may only be beneficial to Tmobile and not the end user. Does anyone have the specifics on the update? Pros and Cons?
I'd like to know if the update is worth it as well.
My phone is currently rooted but I was not the one who did it so I'm afraid to lose root because I wouldn't know how to re-root it.
Is there a way to update without losing root?
I went ahead and updated my phone and it did not undo root. It is a software update that will allow u to upgrade to ICS.

You sure about that? If updating to the UVLDE 2.3.6 GB via OTA, I am pretty sure you lost root. You probably still have the super user app installed, but that in and of itself does not ensure root. Try using a app that requires root access such as Titanium Backup.
I m a bit confuse about Exynos Abuse, I rooted my phone about a month and half ago with Exynos Abuse but I have a huge question, when an official update comes how can I unroot to update? or can I be okay without updating? Please some help would be much appreciated.
As long as you still have stock recovery....my advice would be to grab ota rootkeeper from the market. Backup root and either temp unroot with it or use Supersu to unroot. Grab the OTA and use ota rootkeeper to regain root privileges.

Alrighty, thanks for the advice! I shall do that.
A forewaring; Some "official updates" by AT&T are patches that remove certain exploits that allow us to do what we do with our phones, such as rooting and custom ROMs. Just because AT&T has an official update, it does not necessarily mean it's a good thing.

Sooo you are trying to say I can be okay without doing the update? because in that case I would be more than happy to not unroot my phone lol.
The AT&T updates are unnecessary with what we do. The ROM we're using is actually further along than what AT&T is willing to give us in terms of updates. If and when AT&T gets around to giving us 4.2, we will probably be moving along to 5 already.
If att pushes an update chances are there will be a cwm/twrp flashable version of it in the development section in a day or two:thumbup:

Alright, thanks guys!! btw Hi Sheperd.
yep, accepting OTA updates is the mortal enemy of anyone who enjoys the "treats" that we get here on XDA...there is NOTHING in an OTA update, that wont get baked into the custom roms here, if it is anything that will make our phones better..
avoid them like the plague..

Lol ok sir I will avoid them. I was just wondering, I just wanted to make sure not to do something wrong.
Hey guys, I have downgraded my phone to Lollipop v5.11. I actually DO NOT want to upgrade to Marshmallow v6.01. Is there a way to stop the annoying daily message for the OTA upgrade from Verizon? I have not yet rooted the phone, but looking to do it as soon as I have time. But I want to get rid of this daily annoyance. Thanks!
You'll need to enable USB debugging and run a debloater to remove the apps that trigger the update. Use something like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/debloater-remove-bloatware-t3008241
Just figure out the one or two apps in charge of updates and remove them.
ok I have used the bloatware remover and removed some of the bloat from the stock v5.11 firmware. BUT does anyone know what .apk would trigger the annoying OTA update? I would love to stop this!
not sure it this is completely relevant, but on my gf's t-mobile note 4 on marshmallow already, I deleted a file in system/ priv-apps called "fota" something (firmware over the air) and it hasn't gotten the update message since

There are two usually. I think one is called SDM. If you long press the OTA notification you should see which app is triggering it.
Hello. I just purchased the US version of the Honor 7x, but really hate having apps like Instagram and Facebook on my phone. I don't use them. If I root my phone, is it possible to remove these apps and maybe a few unused Google apps and still receive any future OTA? Thanks in advance.
Good question phone hasn't arrived yet but definitely don't want crapbook and tweaker on it.

Sadly, on the first OTA for Mate2, removing one of the Huawei-created bloatware caused the update to fail. Don't know what the policy is now. So I'd keep backups of removed bloatware. (I think that the OTA was trying to update one of the missing bloatware but there was no option to ignore the error and continue with simply the OS upgrade.)

You can't apply OTA even if you unroot after root without even touching system apps. This is the case with 7X.
It's not the removing of bloat that causes problems with OTA's. It's what you have to do in order to remove bloat which is rooting the phone. Rooting modifies the system data which then fails the check performed when an OTA tries to install. Rooting modifies the system partition and adding twrp modifies the boot partition. So as of now doing anything other than unlocking the bootloader will give you problems whenever we get official OTA.

That's unfortunate. It has been many years since the Mate2 but I don't recall it being as restrictive back then. If I recall correctly, I was able to leave the phone rooted as long I restored stock bootloader and stock recovery. But the OTA failed when it was trying to update one or more of the Huawei apps so I only had to restore the boatware from TB.
I guess I should keep backups of all stock images before rooting. Thanks for the info.
This is very disheartening to hear. With the new additions (e. g. Facial recognition) supposedly incorporated into the next update, I would like to keep OTA. The other items taking up space on my phone is very annoying though. Oh well, I guess the apps aren't a big issue for now. I just wish Huawei would have let us choose our own apps.

Well eventually/hopefully, we'll get some devs to pick up development on the device where twrp, root, and custom roms will let us get our phones to the way we want them. I stayed away from twrp and rooting just for that reason. I just disabled all the crap they added that I don't use

Seeing that the initial popularity and price point for the quality of phone have been positive so far, I do think that will happen. I too am staying away until it occurs. I have ignored the apps I don't like for now, but truly miss apps like Adaway and Titanium Backup, which require root. Oh well, soon hopefully.
I have been able to remove a few apps
I've been rooting phones since the original (G1), but I've now arrived at the point where rooting is no longer the irresistible desire it used to be. I know heavily skinned versions of Android like EMUI & MIUI are not for everyone, but I actually enjoy them. I'm patiently waiting for the OTA. Once Oreo arrives, I might consider rooting, but I'm in no rush.
There are some apps you can uninstall without root.
You can uninstall third party apps like Facebook, that was the first thing I did
I haven't rooted or installed twrp yet until the L24 releases the stock firmware but as another user stated you can remove some of the third party apps. The ones that Huawei made system apps that can't be removed without root are the ones that would give problems with the ota like the stock launcher and the Sim toolkits and other various crap. I wish they would hurry up with the stock firmware release because there are some things I'd like to do that require root

But again, removing system apps could cause the ota to fail if one of those apps tries to get updated and it's not there
