Backing up a stock ROM is kinda pointless since you can always ODIN the original firmware. However, you can now use Titanium Backup for your apps and SMS Backup and Restore for your text messages and not trip Knox.
Alternatively, you can use Samsung Kies for general backup.

that wont work since i need to backup all my system settings and app settings. so i got 2 questions:
1) will adb backup save my system settings?
2) will titanium save my personal settings of my apps?

From my experience, Titanium Backup restores even my login info so I believe it saves everything. I believe it even backs up system apps.

Here's the bottom line. As of right now, until someone figures out a way to circumvent Knox, it's kinda pointless. Let's say you are able to backup your \system partition. In order to Restore it, you will need to go through Recovery. Any custom recovery will trip Knox as of this time. So let me do some more digging or until someone has any input. Good luck.

First android phone, Note 2, first root

Hey there, this is my first android phone and well,,, I do not fully understand the meaning of root. I do want to delete some of my stock apps and what not so i rooted my device from a tutorial, but I don't know where to go from here. I looked at a lot of forums on roms and backup and what not, but I just do not understand any of these technicalities, but really want too.
Can someone tell me how to delete and my stock apps and how to customize my phone?
Thank you!
Download and install the paid version of titanium backup, you can use this app to freeze all the app that you want to delete and backup all current apps. Then you can download and install a custom launcher from the market.
Check out the custom ROMS in the development thread. Always make a Nandroid backup before customizing anything and backup your efs folder in case you loose your IMEI number somewhere in the flashing process.

I'll purchase the titanium back up.
How do I make this Nandroid back up? And how do I back up my efs folder?

[Q] Google Play Edition ROM

I've been checking around and I haven't had my question answered. Is there a Google Play Edition 4.3 ROM for the M919 that is strictly stock (what would come if I bought the phone) and that was able to receive OTA updates? I flashed one from galaxys4root.com but I don't know about OTAs on that one and I had horrible battery life.
We will never be able to receive official otas from Google on Google edition roms. Not unless the signing of custom Odin tars becomes possible and we're able to repartition our phone to be exactly like the Google editions. But even then, repartions are extremely risky and have a high chance of bricking.

Thanks, I'll stick to stock then as I hate losing my data after each upgrade, unless there's a ROM you recommend? (That would let me update without deleting data).

I beg to differ. If your TiBu folder is on your external card, you have to go to preferences->set backup folder. Back up to your root directory (or I think you can go in sdcard1 in the previous dir) and select external_sd->TiBu backup folder. Set that as the backup location, back out of it, TiBu will reload the data, then you use it like normal.

[Q] Can I root my phone with these prefrences?

Hello!
I am HeroCC, this is my first post, so please don't go hard on me.
I may root my android AT&T S3. But before I do, I want to make sure it is safe, and it fits my specifications.
First of all, I want to know how to do it. If you know a decent tutorial about this, please send it my way.
I have heard about clockwork mod, and was wondering if that is a good choice for a root ROM.
Here is my list:
Does not remove any data
I have a 100% backup before
I can Undo at any time, and I will still have all app data, but not rooted*
It does not trip the flash counter
I still have all the stock apps. (Kies air, AT&T Locker, etc.)
I will add more when I think of some. Thanks for any help!
If you find something that does not fit one of these, reply anyway. Some of these I can do without.
*For example, if I am at level 5 now, and get to level 50 in candy crush, and need to unroot, I will still be at level 50 after.
Thank you for your Help!
There are at least three different ways to root this phone, with; casual, cf-auto root, or by flashing TWRP or CWM recovery through Odin and then supersu.zip. I'm not going to recommend one root method here because someone else will just recommend the other and confuse things.
You are likely going to trip the flash counter no matter what you do, but you can reset it to zero whenever you want with an app called triangle away.
Also, you will need the app titanium backup to backup your apps and settings, so if you unroot or factory reset, you can restore them without losing your data.

Just a note, backing up and restoring with titanium backup ONLY works with root. Say you backup while rooted, unroot, then find missing data, you can't restore the titanium backup since no root anymore..

None of them require a factory reset.
Technically, modifying the phone's software in any way can void your warranty, and technically you are not rooted until you have modified the phone to obtain superuser permissions through the operating system. I'm assuming that you want a backup before obtaining superuser permissions, or rooting. The only way would be to flash a custom recovery through Odin, which also modifies the phone and trips its flash counter, which signals that you modified something and still voids your warranty. That flash counter can be reset later, however.
So to answer your second question;
Can you make a backup of your phone before rooting? Technically, Yes.
But can you make a backup of your whole phone without modifying the phone in any way and possibly endangering your warranty? No.

OK. Thanks. This is what I needed. I will now list my plan of action. Let me know it you think it is good! My device is the Galaxy s3 ATT. I just realized that my warranty expires in December. I thought it already had, so I am going to wait until it is done. This is what I am going to do in December.
1. Download Rom Manager
2. Use Carbon/ Helium to backup.
3. Use ROM Manager to install ClockWork mod Recovery.
4. Perform Nandroid backup.
5. (Optional) install CyanogenMod.
I will add more as I think of them. And all of the above will work without a factory reset? Thanks!
Unrelated: Is there a z4mod for my phone? I saw it had temp root and may use that to use titanium backup before I start this.

If you are not rooted you will not be able to use ROM manager or any other app to install a custom recovery. You need to use ODIN to achieve this without root. Since you are on Jellybean most likely, going into a custom recovery will trip your counter no matter what. I would highly recommend using CF auto root to root since you lose no data. It will trip your counter but this is likely to happen no matter what you do.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
You can easily root your phone without tripping your counter. There are so many parts on this, and exactly what you're talking about. Just read the forum posts and everything is answered.

I don't know of any way to back up accounts.
If you have a recovery installed and are rooted you can back up the entire phone but I don't know if just restoring accounts is possible using anything.
I feel your pain. For my company I have many email accounts. It is a pain to add them when I go to a new phone or something.

backup note 7 for recall process

hi,
is there a tool for backing up note 7 (apps and settings) before returning To the service center ?
I know that smartswitch world but that doesnt backup settings of apps.
titanium backup is good but requires root.
an official note 7 backup tool from samsung would be nice.
or a method to get full nandroid backup without touching inox ?

Try this
http://www.samsung.com/uk/smart-switch/samsung-desktop-app.html
First use smart switch to back up settings of the phone, then use Helium to backup settings of apps and or apps themselves. Helium doesn't require root but works pretty much like titanium backup.
There are lots of apps that helium can't backup data from.

Do you know that it backups app settings ?
I never understand why you can't backup settings of an app especially if the backup is attached to your Google or Samsung ID.
If anyone can confirm anything other than the TB/Root solution that works I would really appreciate it.
I used smart switch and I have over 300 aps on my phone, it backed up all of them but 2.

also, is it possible to ;
