Hopefully this is the right place to post this...
I've never used hangouts and now that it offers sms support. Does the app work like imessages, where you can see when the other person starts typing?
From what I have seen and read, it does not do the feature that you are asking about.
I used it. Its kind of like iMessage. It doesn't change between hangouts conversation and sms by itself, it has to be toggled. And you can see someone typing, and you can see where they have read up to only on hangouts conversation.

Ok, so I've found out that Android Wear does a few things really weird:
1. If I'm using the default app for SMS (not Hangouts), I can say "Sent message/text to", along with the message and it will send it.
2. If someone sends me a text through my default SMS app, Android Wear will alert me, but will not let me reply with voice unless I'm using Hangouts as my SMS app.
So if I want to initiate a Hangout with someone, is there a command for that? I can't seem to find it.
Thanks

you can't start a Hangout from the watch, only reply to one sent to you

Hello! On SW 2 you could read text messages you got earlier, and see your list of calls. On SW 3 I only get to read a sms the moment I get it. Am I doing something wrong, or isnt it possible to read previous texts, and check calls, see pictures and so on?
The sw2 and sw3 are running different OS's so you shouldn't expect the same features. Sw3 is an Android wear device manufactured by Sony.
to reply to your question, using hangouts there is no way to read older sms messages. let's hope this will change in the future, considering we have text input methods already out there...
Use google messenger. When you get a text you can swipe left and see your whole convo
Thanx
Thanx for the answers folks! I was afraid I wasnt wrong, that you cant read old messages. I am in fact pretty dissapointed about SW3 vs SW2.. Lets just they make it possible in the future.
Wear messenger works pretty well in doing this. You can go back and read messages even if you haven't received a text. Plus you can send texts via keyboard input. Works great for work when I can't have my phone out, but can still respond briefly to people.
Anyone else have a problem with Hangouts unmerging Google Voice texts and hangouts messages into separate threads? I've used a bunch of different devices for a long while now, and up until I got this phone, the conversations were always merged and I could switch between GV SMS and Hangouts in the same thread using the lower left corner button. Once I got this phone up and running, I noticed that the person I do this for the most now has two entirely separate threads, and that button no longer switches between being able to select one or the other. Now I'm seeing this change to hangouts in the little hangouts window on gmail too. What happened? Does this phone handle contacts in such a way that it caused this separation? I don't use Hangouts for my carrier number texting, and I never have, so no changes there.. just use it for GV texts and actual hangouts messages. Anyone else seeing this? It's beginning to drive me nuts.. I've tried the steps that should work to fix this (like long pressing the two and pressing merge button.. which never appears for me), but no-go.
this is happening to me as well and i am on a nexus 4. Must be a bug with the newest hangouts update.

Huh the same for me, but I never actually noticed since I don't use the separate threads.
Sent from my ASUS_Z00AD
i can only seem to be able to reply and discard texts, how can i reply if i dunno what it says? lol
Do i have to use a 3rd party text app to view them, i assumed you would be able to view them with the stock app?
Another question i have is, my girlfriend has an apple watch and on hers you can view texts etc but also within her phone she can add her own text responses for any most common things she may reply to people, how can i add others?
regards
James
what kind of texts do you mean? sms? hangouts? whatsapp?
every app acts a bit different but however, i am able to read messages in every case.
It's sms I am having issues with, I use textra on my phone
I have been having this issue since yesterday morning where as the title describes that hangouts is taking priority over messages. I literally will not receive messages unless hangouts is selected as the default app. I was thinking that this may have been started once I got a bunch of updates through the play store. However, I uninstalled updates and disabled Hangouts attempting to force the problem to stop. This to no avail.
So is anyone else running into issues such as this. Or, does anyone have any advice as to how I could remedy this issue. I know it is quite silly, but I love being able to use GIFs while texting people and hangouts doesn't support googles GIF keyboard for some reason.

This is a tough one. I've been there before but it was a while ago and I found the answer I believe on G+ but let's see if we can get you back on track here. Under settings->apps-hangouts what shows under SMS app? Click it and make sure at the bottom that sms app is showing Messages. Also in the Hangouts app itself go to settings and make sure SMS is disabled. Let's start there.

So yeah I have already done that. Messages will send the message, but the received message will come in through Hangouts. I am going to do a factory reset when I get home (the wifi at my office is terrible). I will see if that makes any difference. I hate to have to resort to that, but I wasn't having this issue prior to the most recent updates.
So I figured out the problem. I am on Project Fi. Within hangouts there is a setting in accounts that takes all calls and SMS through hangouts. Turned that off and now I am good.
