[Q] Help Rooting, Newbie about to throw phone out window - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hi Ya'll!
I wanted new features, bigger screen size, all the "Droid Does" that apple doesn't BS and now I regret it a lot. After just 6 months of using the phone, it used up every ounce of memory so that nothing works. I deleted practically every app that this stupid phone would allow, removed pictures, deleted text messages, everything I could safely remove I did, and to my laughing surprise, it still is crashing and having memory problems. I have deleted so much of my own input to the phone that it is practically brand new with regard to the I have installed on it and yet, still it has these problems.
Anyway, The Actual Problem: I watched this youtube video called "How to Root Samsung Galaxy Note 2 II Easily!" and I downloaded Odin and I downloaded the CF Rooting file and extracted it (the .rar and extracted to .tar). I open Odin, the phone is connected, I open the .tar file into the PDA section and it runs, but I get a red box that says fail. I did some more research and discovered that maybe I was using the wrong .tar file, so I downloaded a different .tar file. The next time I try to run the new .tar file, it doesn't respond like at all. I close everythign out and try again, and now it won't even pick up the phone in odin. My phone is currently stuck on that stupid black screen with the android guy and it says "downloading... do not turn off target!!" What do I do now? I can go either way at this point, but really, would anyone like to buy this? or at least get it back to working again (albeit very slow and I . I hate this phone.
Mod Edit

If I had to guess, you flashed the wrong file and have a brick on your hands...
Its an operator error, not the phone. .
Never flash anything if you are not 100% sure its the right thing and you know the ins and outs of what you are doing..
I think towards the top there is a stock recovery file, if not, google it and go from there...
But to summarize, its not the phones fault. .

As mentioned above ...you have most likely damaged your internal partitions by using software not intended for your device..
The device can be repaired by sending it to mobiletechvideos.com...(Google it)..and having the device partitions repaired...
They use a JTAG device or even possibly a RIFF BOX and can force push the needed files...
I don't know the cost ...but I can tell you that the device is worth it...
The note 2 is an exceptional device ...and it is clear that you did not understand what you needed to do...
Good luck...and I'm sorry for your loss...g

+1 to this^^^^^^^^^^ @softballjunkie correct. And I didn't even read the whole post.
Android takes some reading and some understanding. Not just install what you want, like Crapple.

the actual problem is that you took a perfect piece of equipment- and while not knowing how to do something correctly- you f..d up your phone. and you blame the phone... read....listen...learn... get educated..then maybe go and tinker with phone. why not go and do your own brain surgery? just watch a youtube video!!!

i think i bricked my epic 4g touch. i had ics fb21 on it and i tried to restore a gingerbread rom back onto it via cwm and something went terribly wrong. i tried all the steps in qbking77s youtube video about unbricking/unrooting. my phone successfully went through the steps but when it reboots it just boot loops. when i try to boot into recovery it continues to bootloop. download mode is still available? any suggestions? thanks in advanced
Have you tried putting it into download mode and then using one of the one click restores via odin? If its bootlooping, your not at a total loss

I believe a few people have said it already. But don't use from manager to flash recoveries. Especially the touch one. You will brick your phone and can't fix it. Only a JTAG service would fix it or a replacement by sprint. Either way good luck and read up on stuff before you try it out.

OH Shix, Dang Dawg, I didn't know there was a such thing as a soft/full brick! I am lucky, I was using mobile odin and flashed the md5 check instead of the tar for fb21 modem and my phone was acting very similar but I just flashed the ONE CLICK EL29 and I was back to stock. hope if you havent tried that, you do and it works for you. I didn't like the touch cwm. but now I am deleting it from sdcard so i dont mistakenly soft/full brick my device. Keep us updated!

after using odin to unroot/unbrick my epic4gt and having still it fail to turn on passed the boot screen, i took my busted phone back to sprint on monday. told them what the problem was, "my phone wont go passed the first screen when i turn it on". they said "ok, we'll just erase everything off, should be as good as new".
i stood around waiting for about 45 minutes, i was so bored i even shamefully sent out a tweet from an iphone..smh. sales associate then came back to me saying," ive never seen anything like this, nothing will work on it, you must have rooted this phone?" my response was "i have done nothing to that phone".
with a kinda upset smirk on his face he says, "it had to be rooted buuuuut since we have no proof we will order you a phone for free, come pick it up friday."
life has been so tough w/out my epic for a whole week, happy that i get my new one on friday
You know...
I'm starting to wonder how I feel about ppl that brick their phones, through fault of their Own, then take them into sprint claiming the "update broke it!", "i never rooted that! i have No Idea what you're talking about!", and I wonder if this is going to make it harder for people with Legitimate issues to get replacements, and affect the way Sprint looks at rooting our phones in general. This Affects Their Bottom Line.

Corrupt sd card (internal memory)

Hey guys i have been having some real trouble working with sgs2 its a real pain now...I have a corrupted hard disk and its write protected doesn't allow to flash anything and i have tried every damn procedure even pushing it through the adb but the administrator does not allow to read it. I can flash nothing on it and the worst part is i cant even brick it even through odin. My friend who is a developer himself and works at telus wasnt able to do anything himself...Tried that even.. The phone is rooted and running Juggernaut 5.0 along with darkside kernel. It has been almost two months now since this problem has persisted...Is there any way i can brick my phone like hard brick that the phone does not turn on or just show black screen i want to get it replaced still have warranty..i paid 590 bucks for this phone and cant even sell it since i cant erase the memory. Please help me out with it.
Thanks

Edit: yeah you definitely flashed for the wrong phone. Just because you're in a Galaxy s ii forum doesn't mean its the correct one sorry about your phone but you HAVE to read before flashing hopefully this will be a good learning experience for you. Again sorry about the brick

I Googled that filename and I'm getting an I777 build of AOKP. I'm pretty sure you can't flash I777 builds on this phone. You're probably hard bricked.
Read, read, read before doing anything other than using the stock software!!! Always make sure you are flashing something made specifically for your device! I hear some of the Skyrocket builds are compatible, but I would double check, and then triple check. Or do what I do and just stay away from them to be safe.
Someone else can confirm whether I777 ROMs work, but if not, you will need to try a warranty replacement or get it JTAGed by MobileTechVideos.
I'm not sure why you were trying to flash an old build anyway, they are on Build 39...but that's another story. Good luck, hope you get it worked out.

nope nothings happening. no pc detection no powering on NOTHING.
lol, you done goofed. next time you should only flash things that you find in tmo gs2 forums. ahaha. You defs need a JTAG unless you can get it in download mode. Also, WRONG SECTION.
Questions go in the Q&A section
You might need a S RIFF Box JTAG Boot Repair/Unbrick, make some searches in your area or on the internet to find a qualified person/company to do that for you.

This is not his problem that he is experienceing. If it is not powering up at all then it is truely a hard brick.
I did this to my phone last week and no matter what I tried, i could not bring it back.

I almost gave up and was willing to try to do a warranty exchange (knowing it was not going to be honored).
Sent it to the guys listed on my thread. I guess you have to have software and hardware to basically rewrite the firmware on the phone then put a stock ROM on it.
Luckily I had a restore point already on my external SD card and was able to get everything back.
Its not cheap but it did work for me!

Need help - Probably Bricked S3

Hi all. I am pretty sure I bricked my wife's S3 when I tried to root it using the following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682 - has nothing to do with the tool kit, more like user error. I have rooted multiple past phones and my current note 2. I got to the odin part and it did it's thing but nevere rebooted to go to the next step. I cannot get into recovery, the computer doesn't recognize the phone now and the screen doesn't do anything. Any ideas? I am pretty sure I bricked it and will need to get a new phone for her.
Appreciate any help or confirmation of a new paper weight.
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 via Tapatalk!
Does the device do anything at all when you try to power it on? What exact steps did you take when you attempted to root the device? If the phone does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, not even vibrate, then your looking at a hard brick. If it does vibrate and/or you can at least get to the splash screen, then it's a soft brick and stuck in a boot loop.

It does sound like it is bricked. In the future, never unplug the phone while Odin is flashing it. (Im assuming this is what you did?) Always wait until it says PASS, RESET, or FAIL. Sometimes it can hang for 20 or more minutes, but it should always eventually show one of those 3 results.
Just to be sure though. Pull the battery, then put it back in. Try to boot into Download Mode. Try to boot into Recovery. If you can get one of these you are probably not bricked. If you cannot get to either one, and you cannot boot normally, then I am afraid you are bricked.
This does not mean you need to buy a new phone however. What it needs is something called a JTAG fix. You can probably find several shops online that will do this for you, but the one that always gets mentioned around here is http://mobiletechvideos.com
Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but I hope this helps you. If you do get it fixed, next time I suggest rooting with the root66 method. It is much safer imo, at least I see a lot fewer problems with it.
Good Luck!
Thanks for the info. I did get the reset and waites for just over 15 minutes. Nothing was happening and I thought it was bricked so I did unplug it. When I used the same tool to root my N2 it took less than 5 minutes for the entire process.
I will check out the link. Appreciate your help! Thank you.

Thanks for getting back. He screen doesn't come on at all, but it does vibrate once after a battery pull and then nothing. I followed the steps and got to "reset" in odin where it was waiting for the phone to reboot and after 15+ minutes I thought "crap" bricked it. Unplugged, which I would screw it up which it did. I am going to look into the company DocHoliday77 mentioned below. Worth a shot as cheaper than buying another phone.

Thanks for the link. I wonder if its just the aboot.mbn on that image or if there's something else. (Ill read through the threads later to see if its mentioned). Either way if we can make a version using our aboot it should work for us too. I don't think using Sprints will work for us, but I could be wrong.

Kernel Flasher for NOTE 2 and SGS3

This was originally for my Blade firmware located under the Samsung Galaxy S3 section in Android Development. All you need to do is simply drop the files you want to flash in the same directory as the flasher, then run the flasher with your phone plugged in. Wait for your phone to get done, close the flasher, and that's it!
It's an extremely simple process and that's why I made it.
Download: REMOVED while under investigation
Just delete the GS3 firmware file and replace it with your own, then run the flasher. It should work fine on the Note 2, it has just been tested quick and it worked as it should.
As referenced below ..
I will "NOT" be attempting this modification based on very detailed information provided in previous threads.
Moderated closure of prior threads would indicate that you are not to be trusted...
