[Q] [SOLVED] Possibly damaged SIM slot? - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In my Galaxy S4 mini's whole lifetime only twice has a micro sim been inserted. The first time I inserted a SIM card inside there, it worked immediatelly without any problems as soon as I powered on the phone (the sim card was cut from a normal one manually by me).
Then I left the phone unused without a SIM inside it for about 2 weeks and just today I tried to put back the same SIM card and the phone always displays "No SIM". Tried taking it on and off like a thousand times but still no effect.
The card is working on another phone but with an adapter as I don't have another phone that uses only Micro-SIM so I can't really test.
Any ideas?
EDIT:
Here is an image of what the SIM looks like and how it is inserted. I would greatly appreciate if someone from here checks the exact form and placement of theirs and compare it to this image:

Are you saying it could be possible that I just cut the SIM card badly? I'm planning on heading to the store and asking for an original Micro-SIM from my carrier but I'm afraid that might not be the solution and it would be a waste of money.

Yes, I would try it

you can buy another if you think is broken from this link

Problem is, all of my friends use normal SIM.
I just watched a video how a person types a hidden code into the dialer which takes him to an advanced service mode and from there after choosing some options, the "No SIM" error immediatelly disappears even without the need of a reboot. I believe he reset the modem or something.
I thought it was a firmware related issue but that might not be the case also as I flashed two different firmwares (both for my region) with Odin and it's still the same.

Is it normal that the center pin is a bit down than the left and right one?

There was previously a user who broke one of the sim card reader clips. It could be possible?

Yep it turned out that was the case, no firmware issues or anything of the sort. Luckaly mine wasn't actually broken but it just somehow went into the bottom too much. I used a small needle and tweaked it a bit hoping to push it back up and achieved it without breaking it.
Now it reads my cut Micro SIM just fine. :victory:

Scary that those pins can bend so easily.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app

I've just had the same problem on my mom's S4 mini: central pin lower than the other two. Bending it up a bit solved the problem.
In fact on other S4 minis the three pins are level.

HOWTO: Bypass activation and use your old simcard. (pics)

Just unboxed my TP2 (photos are in <here>, in case you're interested).
I decided that I'll skip this whole new simcard activation nonsense.. Now, whether they will disable my old simcard or not - I don't know. If they will, I will activate my new simcard then.
So, the problem is that AT&T is trying to be "cute" with us - they glued a piece of plastic on top of the simcard and somehow disabled the simcard locking mechanism from unlocking the simcard.
Meh, nothing a Victorinox pocket knife can't fix.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I'm not responsible for anything, YOU ARE.
Here is how to remove it and stick an old simcard in:

Here's proof that it worked right after a reset (3G, HSDPA is not enabled by default, I presume):
Hope this helps someone.
What is AT&T's motivation for doing this? Is the phone perhaps arriving from HTC unlocked?
Why would AT&T want to go through the needless, employee-centric hassle of activating a new sim card, when I could simply stick my old one in it?
I don't get it?

No idea.. My old simcard works perfectly fine.. and it's actually about 4 years old (2 contracts).. I'm keepin' my $19/mo unlim data for as long as I can.
why are you using a knife to remove the sim card? you can easily remove the card by following the directions on the huge picture bext to the sim card by using the stylus to slide out the sim card.

You mean the picture under the battery?
It doesn't slide out like that.. Did it work for you on Tilt2?
Dunno about the tape, but it is pretty hard to get the SIM out of the Q9h.
(nope, it does not have the unlock mechanism either) I just press down on the actual SIM & slide it out as much as I can with friction and then insert my nails into the slots on the side of the SIM and pull it out..
Pretty much standard procedure on most phones - the unlock mechanism, etc cost $$ and have been taken out on a lot of phones - welcome to cheapo manufacturing..
Still waiting anxiously for my Tilt2 - will report how this works there..

Yes, I am referring to the picture under the battery.
There is a little hole above the SIM card that you poke your stylus into and use that to push out the SIM card. Works fine on the Touch Pro2 Verizon, there is no difficulty in that method at all.

Didn't want to use my stylus. Used this:
Came out very easily..
Note: the tip is blunted/bent.. Do that to avoid inadvertent scratches
Yeah my sim card came out easily using the little hole for the stylus.
I guess AT&T just wanted to cover that "ugly" piece of metal lol.
If the SIM card is taped down and extra difficult to remove, then maybe that is how they are enforcing the new data plan requirements.
As has been pointed out though, I have the unlocked Touch Pro 2 and I have to use the stylus to remove the SIM card. No tape holding it down though, that's pretty weird.
Just use the hole above the SIM card slot. Took me a little to figure it out because I was so used to sliding the card out the normal way.
i personally was never told to activate my phone. the day i got it i called the business line and they said i could use the new sim or the old one and keep the new one as a backup(which i did). and i don't think they tried to make them hard to remove because it's the same for the gsm tp2. you have to use the stylus.
Got mine this morning, and it had no tape and no little lock tab. Popped it out exactly like the instructions showed, and slid in the old one. Worked beautifully.
LOL yeah you just poke your stylus in the little hole and "push" it out. No need for surgery...

[SOLUTION] for T989 user on Mobilicity network taking a long time to register

There was a thread (I can't seem to find it) from a bunch of Mobilicity subscribers that complain about this phone taking a very long time (5+ minutes) to register on Mobilicity's network after a reboot. I think I've come across with a solution. Go to a (different) store and pick up a new SIM card. Tell them the old SIM is defective.
Using my previous SIM it takes me a good 5+ minutes to register onto Mobi's network even if everything is set correctly, after I got my new SIM and tried it numerous times now, issue seems to be fixed. I haven't changed anything on my phone so I strongly suspect it's the new SIM that did the trick. It now takes around 10 seconds to find the network. Not as fast as registering to Rogers's network using a Rogers SIM (which is almost instant) but much better performance now.
YMMV but give it a try!
EDIT:
Remember, in phone settings set "WCDMA only" and dial *#*#2263#*#* to set "WCDMA 1700 preferred".
that's a good suggestion
i recall a similar scenario on my old Nexus S and using older SIMs will sometime has problems, then i got a new SIM, and all the issues went away.,
Do you think it's possible that this happens on Telus' network as well? It takes me a good 5 minutes after any reboot to get service. I've got my SIM card from my Motorola Milestone (December 2010) so I'm not sure if the SIM card is old or not.

No except for the lining pattern on the chip is different (not sure if that means anything).
And also I know it's definitely a different batch of SIM because the numbers pre-programmed in the SIM are different. Go to "SIMTookit" you'll see what's programmed in there.
The previous batch has "*TAXI" which the newer batch doesn't.

My Telus SIM card doesn't have that, but I feel like it is affected just like your SIM Card, in terms of when I reboot, I have no service for a good 2-3 minutes..

Any way u could post a pick or gave us the numbers they use to start with?

If not i may consider tearing mine apart to add thermal grease so it can transfer heat away better (hopefully). I know how much of a difference it makes on desktop computers..

SIM cards only come in GSM phones, so this is not possible. It is possible to flash it to Verizon though, since VZW uses CDMA

The Verizon version has a SIM card being that LTE is a GSM based technology. Sprint's version has one, it's just embedded somewhere.

which mmcx connector would be used for an external gps antenna?
possibility of adding card slot?
So I'm wondering about this. My friend has an old s3 from sprint and he said i could test with it. I wanna see if i could buy a replacement part with sim and the back housing to add the sim. And also use radio from tmobile to test. Not sure if it would work
you may have to be the best soldering expert ever to pull that off, and even then, haha. try it though, you could make a gsm/cdma hybrid device, thatd be cool!

Actually I wouldn't do that.... That stuff would get everywhere, and it conducts electricity too..... You could risk shorting your whole phone and frying it. However, if you made a like rubber ring or something what would keep it it place better, it would most likely increase the heat transfer. But keep in mind these phones, just like laptops, were designed to have higher heat tolerances.

Note 2 takes a normal SIM card ot not?

I have made my Note 2 preorder in Expansys Pro, but now I remembered one important detail for me, can I use the Sim card from my Note 1 or do I have to order a new one because of the 4G or because of the size of the SIM card.

I sure hope for a normal size, there's enough space in the device.
microSIM guys. Regular miniSIMs are a dying breed. Most phones are moving to microSIM and even the newer nanoSIM (next iPhone.)

You realize they make SIM cutters, right? As long as your contact patch comes out unscathed when you cut it, it should be good to go.

Att should allow you to sim swap your note sim for a microsim. It sucks that we can't then go back and forth between phones though. I guess we can use adapters, although I recall the note doesn't play nice enough with some of them.

Not change the SIM. Make this:
http://tecnologia.uol.com.br/mundo-...ra-o-ipad-3g-pode-inutilizar-dispositivo.jhtm
I tried w/ a old SIM and work. I cutted it w/ a scissors.
I cut loads of Sim's at work, haven't had one fail from it yet.
Just use one of these:
I just phoned my Operator (TMN Portugal) and they say I can order from them one microsim to replace my old one for free.
I don't have to pay nothing for the micro SIM, so I think I will order one for me.

Ion doesn't need micro-SIM

I haven't seen anyone mention it on XDA or anywhere else online, so I thought I'd put it out there for people picking up Ions used or as AT&T free phones. Most sites tell you to cut your standard SIM down to Micro, but there's an easier and less risky option, though you still might want to make a small mod to your old SIM. The Ion uses a small tray to hold the Micro-SIM, and that tray just happens to be near the exact dimensions of a standard sized SIM:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
The tray is a little thicker, but otherwise it's basically a Micro-SIM to SIM adapter (which negates any benefit of using Micro-SIM in the first place...no space is saved). I went ahead and took a chance and just slid my standard sized SIM down into the slot where the tray would go, after establishing with reasonable confidence that the contacts should line up--it was just a question of whether the SIM's thickness would fit securely enough to stay in good contact. And yes, it did. Once I got the card about halfway in, the slot gripped it firmly--there must be some sort of retractable mechanism in there putting pressure on whatever you insert.
One problem I recognized but decided not to worry about at the time is how to get the SIM out of there again. Only one little corner protrudes, so I'll be trying desperately to slide it out with a pencil eraser or something if I ever have to remove it. The simple solution would be to drill a small hole or make a notch in that corner of the card, which wouldn't compromise the card's functionality in any phone but would give you somewhere to grip.
or u can use tweezers to remove it.

Maybe, but I'm not too sure if you could get a grip even with tweezers. It's really a tiny corner that sticks out, and flush against the back of the slot.
I had the same problem when I got my ion and yes you can remove it with tweezers.

IMHO, micro and nanosims are unnecessary. The space saved is minimal as to justify the different format. Like when they sold us non standard chargers and non standard hands free (oh, and non standard "data cables) remember?

It's maybe useful if you actually save the space, but in the Ion the unnecessary tray actually takes up slightly more space than a standard SIM. I can only guess that AT&T insisted on that format out of their usual twisted marketing philosophy that if you just introduce enough artificial constraints, the consumer will pay you more to f*** them more gently.
