So when should we see the updates rolling? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I know it's a stage update as usual but, does anyone know when Google will start sending the update to people? Are there people that might have received it?

I have the same question D:

The rollout will probably happen when Google officially announces Android KitKat. I believe this will happen within the next week. In the meantime, I suggest we all wait patiently as there isn't enough difference between 4.3 and 4.4 as to warrant throwing a riot.

There are some differences... under the hood and UI, but yeah, people are getting too impatient about it... they need to relax, chill, and wait patiently till Google makes it official.

I am guessing Nexus start getting it next week, Already restored mine back to completely stock(except it is still unlocked) to wait for the 4.4 OTA.

Well, as long as they push out the update soon so we can then start whining about when 5.0 will come.

It was official yesterday. Google took to their blog to announce both 4.4 & the Nexus 5. In fact my Nexus 5 will be in hand either tomorrow or Monday as it shipped last night. I don't think it gets more official than that. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2013/10/android-for-all-and-new-nexus-5.html

Do we have the official update for the Nexus 7? I don't have a Nexus 5, I have the Nexus 7, hence I'll wait till the official OTA rolls out. 4.4 may have come out with the Nexus 5 but not for me Nexus 7. And you sir are right, I apologize for not specifying what I meant, thanks for the info.

I don't seem to recall saying this was a minor update. I said that the difference wasn't drastic enough to warrant throwing a riot over. There are some minor UI adjustments, some under-the-hood adjustments, and a hidden feature that enables a new JIT compiler that will probably replace Dalvik at some point. The new JIT does break the emulator though and that is why it is hidden in developer options. This is by no means a small release but it's not like we're stuck on Gingerbread still. From some of the people around here, you would think that JB is worthless and unusable now that 4.4 source is out.
Also, before you call someone out for posting incorrect info, make sure that their post actually contains incorrect info.

4.4 till 15 Nov confirmed

Most likely, they'll start pushing it on Monday to some English-language devices. If those don't blow up, everyone else will get it once they finish translating 4.4 to all other languages, probably within a week or two. Be patient :fingers-crossed:

I'm using the current 4.4 build. The ROM itself is running extremely smooth. However, if you choose to flash I STRONGLY suggest that before initial boot, you make sure to hit "Yes" next to the message that says to disable auto-recovery flash or whatever it is. This prevents the ROM from overriding your custom recovery with the stock one. I accidentally hit one of the 10 "No" options and now I cannot boot into recovery and ADB/Fastboot pushing a custom recovery doesn't work.
I'm sure I could just revert back to the 4.3 factory image and start again but I don't think it's worth the hassle since the ROM is working perfectly. So for now I am using the 4.4 ROM as is and just waiting for the factory image to come out so I can Fastboot flash that and start on a clean slate.
But again, the ROM is definitely smooth and worth flashing. I'm loving it.

How will we know when we get an OTA ICS?

I'm a little concerned. With everyone here rooted and on custom roms, noone will get the OTA update. That means we have to rely on outside sources for the availability of that update. That also means we will have to unroot/go back to stock to get the update. That just seams like a lot of wasted time. I'm going back to stock right know so I don't waste any time.
Then again, maybe it would be better to get it a couple hours after it is released. I mean with sprints network pushing all those updates at once.... waiting might even be faster.
From what i've seen most of the time the ota is leaked here before its released.

No that was not THE ota but an ota most of the leaks supported ota flash and we will know when the ICS kernel source is released and when you look at your phone and it says there is a firmware update lol
Lol i haven't received an ota on any device since i joined xda

You will know. It will be posted on BGR, Brief Mobile, Android Police, etc. Sprint usually lets the world know a few days before the OTA is sent. Chances are it is that it will be the last RDF that is posted before they announce.
On the old Epic the source was usually dropped the night before the OTA started. There's always someone lurking on stock and you get a topic on the forum stating "Have OTA notification can someone help me pull it?"
So, in conclusion, there's no cause for alarm.
Plus not everyone here is rooted. There are those that prefer unrooted stock. I can't imagine why but they exist

Rooting doesn't prevent the OTA from installing. Modifying or deleting system files with your root power is what causes the OTA to fail.
If you install the pre-rooted EL29 ODIN OneClick, the OTA will install file. It will disable your root, as all official OTAs do.
Won't our phones get the OTA notification regardless what build/ROM is installed?
Depends if the app that handles the updates was disabled/removed, never present, or still active.

Makes sense.
Do you know what app handles that and how to check and see if it's still in operation?
That was my thinking before too. When I first installed custom roms with ek02. I thought how I would have get the next OTA update. I just waited until the developer of the ROM i'm using updates it to the latest build. now I don't feel the need to accept any future OTA updats. Plus it will break root anyway, if you didn't change any system files. Might as well wait a few days and get the update with the ROM of your choice. you can always download the OTA update later on and install it manually if you want too. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I think it is System Updates, but might be Smart Device Manager.
The process to check for updates is distinct from the one that bugs you to install after it is downloaded. They may or may not be in the same app.

Verizon doesn't push the updates for Toro. Google does. Big Red does, however, need to sign off on the update prior to it rolling out, especially given that it will include new basebands. It also bears mentioning that Toro has, at times, been first to receive an update

Yes, that is correct. My point is, Verizon is the rate limiting step in the process, and if OP really wants Jelly Bean, then he might as well flash it himself. After all, isn't that the beauty of a Nexus?

Use the leaked update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30846512#post30846512
Only custom rom that is running the leaked "customized" version of the verizon rom is thuderstick red Bull. It's a nice, verizon friendly rom
Only rom that is Verizon friendly? I've ran several roms. The toro roms work. Some have issues that some do not. Bugless beast works, so does CM nightlies. There are many flavors of jb just try and use the one that works for you. Its not a contest. Its your phone play, test, find the rom that works best for you. I was speaking to vzw tech support today. Direct quote, almost verbatim : "I was just checking on the status of the software update that addresses the issues you're having with data connectivity. The reason it took so long is I was checking several third party websites. I wasn't able to find any information about a release date..."

I never said that there is ONLY one Verizon Friendly rom out there, there's almost 100 of them that work perfectly fine. There's plenty of "toro" roms out there, but the specific question was stability and if he didn't want to veer too far away from Stock, while still maintaining a working set of Verizon apps. I use the Verizon apps as well, but it's always a manual process and when it breaks there's always a procedure.
I too like the Verizon data usage widget comes in handy. I totally agree that there are alot of roms that the app gave the log in issue before Verizon's gn update. But like I posted in other posts I reverted back to the k ota. But after today that sprint is updating today we will be soon to follow. So I will half fast for a week or 2 more before I never look back on OTA again. :banghead:

obviously not an official answer, but it seems that they cannot extract the radio from the phone, and so they are reverting to 4.1 and hoping that he gets the OTA again so they can extract it before the ota is flashed?
Sounds like that is the plan. But this raises a good point, especially since we don't know how the test ota process works, and thus don't know for sure that he would receive the ota again. Maybe it would make sense to first get it rooted and then pull the radios via the gnex toolbox (which is probably easier and quicker than doing it manually) and maybe also pull a full system image or create an image. zip of the stock ROM through CWM.
That said, these guys are doing this out of pure goodwill, and they should do whatever works best for them and doesn't interfere with their lives. Just happy they gave us the news

The OTA "should" be linked to a device ID. When the public OTA rolls out, blocks of devices are updated at various intervals (which is why some get the OTA later than others). The server housing the OTA at present should have a block of test device IDs authorized to download. If this holds true, then he should be able to grab the update again if running JRO03O. Key word is "should". :fingers-crossed:

Update is live and rolling out! See my post in the main general thread. My wife is downloading now. I am in SW Missouri. Have fun!
Do we know or suspect anything yet in regard to
1) keeping root through the 4.4 OTA?
2) the negative impact of accepting the OTA on a rooted device running TWRP? I read something today that seemed to indicate that you needed the stock recovery to accept the OTA, so perhaps this is a moot point.
Related Note:
Why do I care if I am rooted? Why don't I just wait and flash a custom Sense 5.5 based on the new OTA firmware when it becomes available? It's interesting - I keep going back to my stock, rooted, original rom after flashing multiple roms available here on XDA, even some very good ones. HTC has done a pretty darn good job with Sense 5, and while I had no qualms leaving 3.6 behind for stock AOSP Android when available, I find myself missing Sense features when I use AOSP or GPE on my One. I've messed around with a couple of Sense custom roms, and I keep returning to the original firmware. I appreciate the ability to remove apps entirely through TiBu, so keeping root is good, and I reserve the ability to flash a custom rom if I get itchy want to, but I look at the fact that we are soon to receive an OTA, and I am torn. I know that it will be likely a matter of hours before someone Santod posts a stock rooted Verizon 4.4, but I've already set mine up exactly the way I wanted it. It's funny, after spending a couple of months not flashing new roms, both on the last month of my Bolt when there was nothing new and in the first month of having the One when 4.3 couldn't be rooted, I got really annoyed at the amount of time I was spending setting up accounts and preferences and mods and whatnot during the last week of flashing custom One roms. /rambling

Yes, camera hardware changed at least 9 times before they got it right.
Sure it's been posted, but the stock update link is here: http://support.verizonwireless.com/support/system_update/htc-one.html

ND8 KitKat source is posted on the opensource page..here comes KitKat with 3.4 kernel

Let the ROM watch begin. Here comes ND8 KitKat. CNexus confirms that with this update we will finally be on a 3.4 kernel!

No, you can't install anything from this link. It's source for developers. But it means in the next day or so the roll out of ND8 KitKat will begin OTA.
It's great news.
And as always, don't just excitedly grab the update before you find out what's in it. We don't need another thread full of whiners.
There are plenty of competent people here who can modify the OTA if needed; the last time it took only a few days after the roll-out.
Awesome
Remember, if you get the notification, please try and get the actual file name of the update file and post it here. Once we have that name we can suss out the full download path of the file and it can be downloaded directly from the google server. In the past the path has been:
android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/sprint_samsung_l710/XXXXXXXXXXX
where the X's are replaced by the file name.
Post the filename here if you get it!
Noted.

Cant wait for this one !
If this is anything like KitKat for the Note3 it will be a winner. My Note 3 got way faster when I updated to KitKat. It was the single biggest improvement I have ever seen on a device with an OS update and I started using Android when the Samsung Moment came out on Sprint !

It means they can hax0r it so that it does not take away your phones ability to be rooted and pretty much boring.
So...They hax0r it, you continue to root it, then your phone continues to r0x0rs your b0x0rs all nightx0rs........:victory:
That's basically it. Things can be twisted around a bit if needed and any remaining bugs can be remedied.

We can remove checks of your bootloader version, remove flashing of the new bootloader, etc.
Ah okay. Sounds good. So hold off until a stripped OTA is posted. Got it. Now to just find a 4.4.2 Rom that mimics The S4/5.
yeah im waiting for the @CNexus version.

As soon as I get a link/zip from someone :good:
Finally...now I can update the wife's and daughter's phones....JB really borked the daughters so much so that I told the wife not to update so this will finally relive me of having to answer "my phone keeps telling me to update something, should I?" questions...
And before someone yaps up about "why not root" - it's because I don't want to deal with the bugs/updates/mods on their phones and besides, Flixster (an app they both use a lot) doesn't work on rooted phones (until somebody releases an update to OTA Rootkeeper or other app that hides root).
