This is how is ShOuLd be...
HTC should force carriers to keep up with updates. Just because our DEVs can crack their S-OFF blocking doesn't mean they should delay updates (granted we don't know this for sure, but, I believe this is why) .
For HTC to enforce that all HTC Ones get the updates we deserve is how they should enforce their phones. Will we see this?
Doubtful, but never count anything out.
HTC does LOVE their HTC One family...

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you said. HTC seems intent on keeping their flagship up to date. I hope they keep it up. Maybe theyll get enough good press people will buy this amazing device and they'll clear a profit. Don't want this OEM to go belly up.

It would be very sad to see HTC fail. After owning the S4 and spending some time with the Moto X and G2, nothing holds a candle to the One. I hope more people realize this and HTC can climb back to the top of android sales.

Agreed. This phone is ridiculous.
Sent from my Oney Bone.

Way the article read this is for gsm HTC one. Verizon one is its own entity. After all I don't see them skipping 4.3 for 4.4. When they release 4.3 they sure ain't going to turn right around and push another major update. Plus this guy from HTC promised us 4.3 at the end of October then last minute changed his story. Like he didn't know that it would be delayed.

This brings up an interesting point. Every time I go to purchase a new device, The reps try to talk me out of buying an HTC. It usually takes me telling them 2 or 3 times that I have made up my mind. The reps act as though owning an HTC is taboo, lol.

I take Verizon to always be an exception to such a proclamation. I'm sure HTC will have something ready for Verizon within 90 days, but Verizon will inevitably delay it for their own purposes.

HTC will probably still release 4.4 on our One. When Verizon gets around to it is a whole different story. Our devs will hook us up when it releases on gsm Ones.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Couldn't HTC theoretically "leak" a Verizon version of 4.4 somewhere online and kind of circumvent Verizons process, and allow the s-off people to install it?
I mean I'm not sure they'd ever do this but isn't it possible?
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk

There was a release of an Android version (can't remember if it was Froyo or what) for the Droid Eris that had been leaked prior to the official release. I always assumed HTC did this on purpose. At the time however, flashing that build - for some technical reason - made it impossible to flash the newer build that was officially released. One of you around during the days of the Eris probably know the events better than I do.

I'm sure there is a chance of that but, at this point, with HTC's current financial crisis I think the last thing they would want to do is anger Big Red if it somehow got traced back to HTC. Verizon could shun HTC altogether and we'd all be shafted out of the next versions of this device. I'd love for it to happen but it won't. As always we'll have to rely on our awesome Devs to give us something Verizon seems hell bent on releasing entirely too late and in some cases not at all. Look at newt's 4.3 Sense 5.5. It's been out for what? A month? He got it up and running for us. Dude is a beast.
4.4 was released to AOSP yesterday so it's only a matter of time before CM churns one out.

Of course they could always go with "What happened? On no! Uhhh... We got hacked? Yeah... Hacked..."

At this rate, I think most of their customers are probably rooted already. Better support here than vzw techs can ever provide!
Fact is that vzw wants to make sure their crap doesn't affect HTC's update before releasing it. As such, we all now how much crap they dump on us, so expect to wait a lot longer!

OK but I would say about 80% of people don't root. I know that is just an estimate but from experience it seems reasonable to me. So, say vzw sold 100,000 inc2s. That would be 80,000 people that might call them if the update changed something or something was broken in it. That's a lot of time for vzw service reps

I am not saying you are wrong, but my original point is that ICS is on the Incredible S, (which I think is the same phone unless someone tells me differently) and it is fine. If it was such an issue, Verizon would never release an update on any phone ever... because something can always go wrong and often does. The one way they truly know there are issues is to release an update, listen to feedback and send out bug fixes. What we "think" we know is that Verizon has had this update, since at least August if not earlier and they are sitting on it. I don't believe one bit that they are worried that this update might break something, Maybe I am a conspiracy theorist, but I think they are holding off hoping more people update to newer phones. Look at the Galaxy Nexus. JellyBean 2 or 3 months ago and Verizon just updated it about a week ago. The Galaxy Nexus is going on a year old and if they can get people to upgrade, they can also get people into this ridiculous share everything plan. I just don't think it has anything to do with them making this update perfect, because that would not follow how they have handled updates up until now...

HTC has always done from my knowledge. Oh, if you do get the OTA update, then I hope you get good coverage. Last time I did an OTA update, it took two and a half hour to download like 180 MB at full bars.
P.S. I believe that Sprint is still CDMA to my knowledge (or I don't know crap.)

agreed, not to mention if bugs arise from the ota or post ota (that werent caught in testing or werent thought to be a big deal) then they have to potentially release more incremental updates that cost more money
i dont know exactly how the contract stuff works, but im assuming verizon paid for ics updates from htc for the tbolt and inc2 (since there are debug builds) but might be able to cut their losses by not actually releasing it...if they feel that it doesnt benefit them by releasing it
the tbolt not getting updated makes sense actually since it was released 3/11, and that puts the 20 month on contract update window for those early adopters within the next month or two
i dont see verizon doing anything to lessen the chances those users upgrade....and a new OS just might do that
inc2 was released about 6 weeks to 2 months later, but same theory applies
not to say the update still *wont* happen...but every week that its not out id say significantly drops the chances of it
now that doesnt get htc off the hook for chinese inc2 kernel source...which by my count is approaching (if not passed) their own 120 day window (which techinically by my interpretation is not legal anyway) for releasing it

actually htc has been releasing (for the first time i can remember) the ics updates for the msm7x30 phones on htc dev as RUU's rather than ota's as of late
without looking im pretty sure they did this for the desire s, rhyme, and the more recent inc s updates....they seemed to have stopped ota's through carriers for it
i guess their reasoning is something along the lines of "well the general public wont take the upgrade, so less support" and since its released through htc dev anyway i dont think they have to support it...its more like "here it is, have at it"
This will make the various ICS ROMS for DINC2 much better, since now they will be based on our phone instead of something like our phone.

This doesn't mean jack for the Inc2.
LOL, so now today HTC has been responding on their Facebook and saying they are working with Verizon on the ICS update for Thunderbolt, Incredible 2... and the REZOUND! SMH. The Rezound was already updated to ICS a while back, early August if I remember correctly. I really think no one over there knows what the hell they are doing...

Unless u have had multiple issues with the same model phone they will never just give u the next model up, u could try being an ass about it, some ppl get positive results like that, but to be honest, besides screen size the difference in the two phones is very small, the s2 is a little aged but if u look it still has the most recent os, still gets plenty of love from devs, and though aging still is considered a flagship phone I love my Hercules, wouldn't hope for a s3 as replacement

That's not entirely true...
When my vibrant bit the dust, the exchange ended up being my hercules because they no longer had any of the vibrants. I had a choice between the HTC Amaze and the GS2, and I like to think I made the right choice.
To the OP: Since they still offer the GS2, it is what you'll get in an exchange fit your GS2.

I don't understand how people can still be infatuated with this phone. It's a good phone, but it's outdated. Don't know why I haven't upgraded yet, but I'm beyond sick of this device. The Snapdragon s3 chip is showing it's age. I'd take an GS3 any over this phone.

So update then, the Hercules may be 2yrs old but its far from outdated, the reason ppl love this phone is sammy still takes care of it, still has latest software, still has lots of development going on, and if u look at it the s3 isn't that much better than the s2 beside the .3in of screen size, the Hercules had been and will continue to be around, and oh it will continue to get updates until 4.2.2 where it will stop, along with the s3, note, note 2, and us version of current s4, so no this phone does not suck and it's not going anywhere, go update to an s3 and see how little difference there really is, why do ppl leave comments like this?

Not much of a difference? Let me list some for you...
Bigger, 720p screen
The s4 CPU is about 30% faster along with 2gb of ram plus the Adreno 320 GPU is worlds ahead of the adreno chip in t989.
MUCH better battery life
And a MUCH better camera to list a few facts.
It is a upgrade and an all around better device. Don't kid yourself. This phone is good, not denying that, but don't be a fanboy and deny the obvious.

The t989 also has 2gb of ram, yes the screen isn't as nice but it's not that much smaller either at 4.52in, the processor is only about 17% faster not 30 and I get amazing battery life, so no it's not that much better, if u look at the difference between the s and the s2 its phenomenal, the s2 to s3, not so much, now I'm no fanboy and I wasn't dissrepecting anyone with my comment but just wondering why if u dislike the device u would post about it in a forum dedicated to the Hercules, that's all, is the s3 a great device, absolutely, but so is the s2 and it nobody here cares how much u dislike it, we love it because we do, and that's why we, along with the entire development base for the phone, are still infatuated with it, if u aren't then upgrade

Any who back to topic, you get a refurb t989. T-Mobile is still selling the t989 in store so that's not going to change for a long time. Matter of fact before I left T-Mobile, they had just released the steel grey version.

My god...
The T989 along with every other variant of the Galaxy S2 has always had only ONE GB of physical RAM. What you're looking at is STORAGE.
I'm done here lol.

You're argument is invalid.
Any who back to topic, you get a refurb t989. T-Mobile is still selling the t989 in store so that's not going to change for a long time. Matter of fact before I left T-Mobile, they had just released the steel grey version.

Mines died a few days ago also, they offered me a refurbished s2, a lumia or a mytouch q. Obviously I stuck with a refurbished s2 as the other choices both suck. The lumia has the same/ worse specs in some areas then the s2.

No need to get butthurt lol. I was only stating facts. Not only that I clearly stated that this is a good device, so I'm not trolling, or starting a fanboy war.
When you become this infatuated with a device, you grow ignorant to everything else that's out there. To the point where you and others like yourself will talk down the GS3 to make the GS2 seem like it's a dream when in reality, your opinions are far from the truth. This makes you no better than an iPhone fanboy.
This is completely off topic, but the fact is the GS3 is a worthy upgrade to the GS2.

Free upgrade maybe. If I had to shell out a penny, it would be for a newer model...S4 or N4....definitely not paying for a phone that is a "bit" better, yes it is a bit better.....if I'm paying anything, it would be for something a lot better!

After my experience with the galaxy S and now S2....I'm probably gonna stick with Nexus phones. Probably the one after the N4 now. I like speedy updates, plus the dev section is busy busy. Well, can only speak for my N7 so far.
I do like my S2, and have a year and half left on contract. It handles anything I need it for just fine. So no hurry to upgrade. Maybe if I was hooked on the latest and greatest 3d games....but I don't play many games on my phone.
Don't use the sd slot either.....so I think I'll go nexus when I do get a new one.

Same here. Honestly, all I want is the smoothest experience possible. I'm tired of the missing frames, general choppiness lag that I experience sometimes with my GS2. I considered a Nexus, but I'm not the biggest LG fan. Though their Optimus G2 is one sexy ass device.

I feel the exact way, for me its the money, If i had enough I would have gotten the galaxy note 2 months ago, same situation with the S4. I don't have a job right now so I can't even afford the extra 20. I wouldn't have any phone service if it weren't for my dad helping me out.
I already ordered an HTC One yesterday which I'll be picking up tomorrow but I might hold back on actually using the new phone. I'm pretty surprised that the Galaxy SII, despite its age still has an abundance of developer support (not to mention the ROM ports with Linaro available)

What would you do?

As of August 1st I have been eligible for an upgrade. Also.. I am no longer in contract with sprint.
On a side note, I travel the world (primarily in the US though) for my career.
What phone would you get? S4? HTC One? Hold out for the Motorola X (I love that phone despite the somewhat mid tier specs)?
Would you switch carriers? Wait for the next nexus? Any other rumored phones on the horizon?
I feel like I do not want to renew my contract just yet and no device particularly stands out to me just yet (aside from my Motorola X curiosity).
As the title suggests.... What would you do? Hold out for nexus on a gsm and ditch? I'm SO TORN!

I primarily work in Seattle, Los Angeles, new York, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Florida, Atlanta (sometimes). The other countries I primarily work in are Germany, France, London and possibly soon will be in Japan more frequently.
Obviously gsm is a better choice if overseas trips continue to happen more often... Mostly concerned with coverage in the US though as I can get by (well enough) using Google voice and wifi in Europe... Although that has SCREWED me over few times...
I think I'm mostly hung up on devices at this point. I may just bite the bullet and buy the next lte nexus and attempt to be contract free...

Do not do the new program that t-mobile and AT&T are doing. It is absolute BS. Not only do you pay the full amount over a 2 year contract, if you want to upgrade, you are required to give the device back. You are essentially renting the device from them for the full price. If you want to cancel your contract early , you are required to pay the rest of the full retail price of the device at the time of purchase and pay the ETF. Go with the original plan options if you go contract.

32 gigs is enough for me (when that variant comes to everyone). Only stuff I store locally is Spotify music. Everything else auto uploads to the cloud essentially.

Yeah the no SD card and non removable kinda annoying me too. The Korean version has both SD slot and removable battery. Let's hope sprint can get it in their variant ... I'm banking on that if they do I want to try something different than Samsung

New rumor from last night is that there will be TWO nexus variants in Q4. One from Lg (based off of (G2) and another nexus made by Motorola (NOT based on the moto X). If either of these is cdma (probably not) I'll buy on the play store and stay contract free.
Given that they will most likely be gsm only... I would most like the Motorola nexus, if true, and switch to tmobile. Contract free of course...

More like January or Feb, I'd say or maybe never...at least for the Sprint variant. It isn't in Sprint's interest to push updates unless the other carriers do. Of course Samsung wants to get these updates moving because they want the public to feel they'll be supported if they purchase a Samsung branded device but brand loyalty isn't in Sprints interests unless the brand is Sprint and that of course is usually maintained at the end of a very thin thread as it is.
As for the possibility of receiving the 4.3 update. I'm always excited about OTA updates because updates play a fairly big role in future versions of Android. The more updates there are the more well understood it is what the public wants/needs from future versions because of the broader spectrum of users providing feedback.
For my own personal device...I don't care. I run what I want on my device anyway regardless of whatever Samsung/Sprint/Google push. I don't give a rats ass about having a "pure" Android experience or being the first to get the latest version (no offense to the Nexus fans) either. I want my device dirty and nasty with a big moustache. I don't want be like one of those creeps that hangs around the strip clubs but never pays for a lap dance...I'm in the champaign room and let me tell you there is more going on in there than the song says. Why do you think I'm hanging around here? Trick it, brick it, fix it, trick it and brick it again...that's what it all about.

Yea don't really care because Google separated their core services from the operating system so most of the really great feature are now pushed through Google rather than being a part of a new os version.
Android updates aren't as feature rich anymore.

Pretty sure that you're missing the point.
The updates that we all are anxious for are system updates that ROM devs can work with, make better ROMs for us all. Definitely worth "complaining" about.
That other thread is about a fault where the phone thinks it needs a software update, but not really, or the update in question is actually not desirable for whatever reason.
Welcome to XDA.

I've been thinking long n hard about that, as an option. I do love my Note2, with the exception of the plastic, it's a badass device. But I don't actually use the pen as much as I thought I would. So taking a long look at the HTC Mega (?), and hoping that it makes it to the US... HTC Failing / Updates

Quick question that I'm thinking about that you should think about. If HTC goes out of business and fails as a company soon, will that mean we won't potentially get future software updates? Or will they all just be rolled out by Verizon as stock software like the Google Play edition HTC One?

there is a lot of media talk that HTC is failing. But I don't think they are in any danger of going out of business anytime soon. If anything, they'll get bought out by someone.
As much as I don't think that'll happen, I'm fond of the idea of a straight Google experience on this device without having to buy the GPE edition.
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk 4
I'm guessing each one of us already has an experience that speaks to this question (which is a pretty good one, by the way). OK, Motorola...Samsung...LG...none of them have failed yet, but here's my version: bought the Droid 3 in October 2011, and two short months later Motorola announced the D4. WHICH (magically) had just the minimum hardware to get the ICS update. Of course the D3 fell under the bar.
So I've suffered the shame and frustration of running Gingerbread on a phone for two years (fwiw, there *have* been ICS and JB ROMs, but all a bit wonky one way or the other, e.g., camera function), while the world of Android has raced by me. To owners like me -- less than 6 months after buying the beast -- all manufacturer support for the device went stone cold.
To be honest, I don't have any nuggets of wisdom to offer here. The two rays of hope if HTC fails are (1) we get root/unlocked bootloader and the devs save us, or (2) we get the 4.3 update as promised and find peace, happiness, and contentment one version short of Kitkat (which, by the way, doesn't look yet like the kind of leap we've seen from one version to the next -- many of the expected improvements are under the hood). I do not think that Google or Verizon will do any work whatsoever on the phone if HTC drops support for it.
-Matt
