High latency from local computers - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hi.
I have this Nexus 7 Flo, with PAC-man ROM and ElementalX 1.8 kernel.
I've got a TP-Link TL-WR941N, which is 802.11n. It isn't running at 5GHz and it works fast and flawlessly on every computer out here.
Today I've tried to play with Splashtop GamePad and noticed a pretty high input lag, together with a slow image recovering (as if the game was running at 15fps), but not constantly. Game was running smooth on the pc and it is connected thru cables.
Pinging to my N7 gives me around 80~150ms of latency. Pinging any wireless computer on my network gives 1~5ms, WCS would give me 50ms (weak reception).
Looking at the wireless settings, I've noticed that the N7 reports a speed of 65mbps (which is above the .11g speed, and well below the .11n speed), even if I'm virtually scratching it against the router's antennas. Most of the other wireless machines reported 150mbps
Is it a common issue? People are sleeping around here and I cannot wake em up to ping their mobiles lol
Is it a radio problem or kernel, battery saving related? I'm able to get my internet's full speed through the wifi on N7, but this latency is killing me

Bump.
I've tried with different Android devices (Samsungs, S3 and a Tab 7), they all pinged just the same, and had the same 65mbps speed.
I'll try with some Apple devices later.

I just checked my Nexus 7. It tells me I have either 54 or 135 Mbps. My Galaxy Nexus has 65 Mbps. The GN pings between 1ms and 200 ms, fairly irregularly on my 2.4GHz network (5GHz doesn't work unfortunately, unless I sit it on top of my router). My Nexus 7 pings between 1ms and 200ms on the 5GHz network, but has more double digits pings than the GN, which has more triple digits. Nexus 7 has stock ROM 4.3.1 with ElementalX 1.8 kernel on a Netgear N750 router.
Pinging my wifes smartphone in another room, I get 150 to 230ms ping over the 2.4GHz network. I think my HTPC pings are usually between 40 and 80ms.
Not sure if any of that helps you.

Yeah.. I'm getting pretty much the same :/
I've did some tests with an Motorola Atrix, an iPhone 4S and a iPad 2. They all ping just the same, with an eventual four digit latency. I've tried it in two different routers (from TP-Link) and one Intelbras (.11g). They all behave the same. Funny that on Speedtest app, they ping lower to a remote server than to my local computers.
My Raspberry PI pings between 1 to 5ms, so does every other physical computer and laptops set to answer ping requests.
I don't know why does this happen

Slow Wifi

I am getting low speeds when using wifi on GS3 compared to my computer and brothers nexus 4. In my room which is the room next to the living room with the router I get about 16-20 mbps on 2.4 ghz and about 8-10 on 5ghz. My brother was getting about 40mbps on his nexus and my computer about 46 mbps.
What can I do to fix?

You could try on the ROM to set for one frequency band only instead of Auto. For example, 2.4 and not 5ghz. Also, your Router's admin page could give preference to a particular device with QoS settings.
Maybe reboot the router and cable modem/dsl to see if that might help.
It's a possibility you could try to change the wifi channel you are connecting on as well. It may be set as auto but may get interference. I would only caution, the laptops seems to have higher powered antennas and our phones usually aren't terribly high power so they may have the possibility of being susceptible to more interference whereas the laptop is not.
Get inSSIDer from the play store. It will help you find the best wifi channel.

I turned QoS off, speeds on every other device are great except for the phone itself. Like I said my bro standing next to me and my laptop in my room got around 40mbps (nexus 4) and my laptop got around 46-48 mbps while my S3 was only able to pull near 20mbps. I've tried limiting my frequency scans to 2.4ghz or 5ghz only and have not noticed any differences. Actually 5ghz seems to be slower which is weird since my bro and my phone are the only ones able to connect to that band. You guys think changing wifi drivers would make a difference in my phone? I know different kernels have different wifi drivers built in.

any other help from anyone would be appreciated.

[Q] Nexus 7 (2013) wifi speeds / which router do you have

Hi everyone,
I have my Nexus 7 connected to a Linksys WRT160N router with tomatoRAF firmware installed. This router+firmware+configuration setup was the best I could do without constant dropping of connection or not connecting at all, but still at very slow speed of 0,5 - 1,5 MB/s (average is more around 0,6) when copying files on local network (SMB) with ES File Explorer. Which is good enough for web surfing and emails, but not enough for IPTV and youtube (youtube works, but i have to wait for it a lot).
So far i have tried numerous configurations of my router, nothing works. I tried other routers, 9 to be exact, but i have never seen more than 2MB/s.
Now i'm thinking about buying new router, and I want to know what wifi speeds do you get with which router.
thanks
Hi,
what's your net speed? mine is 26 mbit/s and this is what i get. however, IF you stream sound with BT/have any BT service up and running and your wifi runs at 2.4ghz it is highly probable the two (bt and wifi) interfere. This was the problem i had and which i found out after buying soundbar which links with its subwoofer via BT(BT butchered my wifi, i was scoring 1mbit to up to 26). I have switched to dual band modem/router (tp link td-w8980). now, i have two WiFi networks at my place, one which runs at 2.4ghz and the second at 5ghz. the 5ghz is used only by my nexus :]
N7 2013, Buffalo N300 router, Verizon FiOS 75/25. The router is dual channel, but not dual band: 2.4GHz only.

I had throughput issues with a Linksys WRT54GL and Tomato, was not a configuration problem. Loved the way Tomato worked, how it looked, it's options... but in the end, all I really cared about was throughput. Are you able to replicate the throughput issue on stock router firmware? You said you tried other routers. All the same model (RMA)?
Tell me more about your connectivity issues.
If you've used different routers from different manufacturers (with their respective stock firmware), then it's probably a problem with your tablet.

I had this throughput issue from the day I received my nexus 7 (2013), with stock firmware on router. But with stock firmware, the connection would drop randomly (from 5 minutes to 12 hours) and to reconnect i had to restart the router and nexus - this was corrected only with this firmware TomatoRAF (i tried dd-wrt and 2 more tomato firmwares - all kept disconnecting). I never had this throughput issue with any laptop, only this nexus.
The other routers i tried were all different routers, but all at least 3 years old.
Another information: friends nexus 7 (2013) WIFI, flo, also had same speeds on my router.
today i will try to test a few phones and a laptop on my router and will post results as soon as i can
32gb lte model, I use an Asus ac66u and Comcast 105\25 Mbps. 5ghz WiFi gets me 90 Mbps down and 22-30 up, 55 Mbps down and 22-30 up on 2.4 GHz.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
This is what i get (copying files from server with es file explorer):
nexus 7 2013 (kitkat) - 760kB/s
1st xperia ray (kitkat) - 750kB/s
2nd xperia ray (jellybean) - 530kB/s
xperia mini pro (jellybean) - 560kB/s
galaxy s4 mini - 1070kB/s
laptop - 6500kB/s
I used to get 10MB/s+ on my laptop with original linksys firmware, but now i configured router to be more "reliable" and i would be more than happy if nexus had 6,5MB/s connection.
I attached some info about router configuration. If there is an "expert" reading this willing to help, i can post more complete configuration.

Are you happy with ac66u? any problems? what about lan to wifi speeds (with laptop/ac adapter)? i am asking as it is a serious contender for my next router

Considering how inexpensive it was I"m extremely happy with the TP-Link WR1043ND that I use. With aftermarket antennas I bought as an experiment and the current firmware installed signal strength through walls and general performance is great. I thought about installing third-party firmware on it when I first got it a couple years ago but see no need. For the package I have from Comcast they advertise I think 25 Mbps down and 5Mbps up and I usually see 28/6. If you haven't already done so make sure your router is using the best channel for your location. Also, I see a lot of people move off of channels 1, 6 and 11 which can make them see/cause more bleedover from/to adjacent channels. You can see that in my screenshot with networks MercedesBenz and Sandvik. I live in a house but the effect in an apartment or condo would be worse. I also use a repeater because my router is at the opposite end of the house from my backyard patio and this house has insulated steel siding. Wifi Analyzer is a free app and works great to figure out what channel would work best for you.
Also in the N7's wifi advanced settings I use "2.4 GHz only" which seems to make it reconnect faster when waking up the device because I also use "only when plugged in" during sleep.

I haven't had any problems. All my large lan transfers are done over Ethernet cat 6. If it can pull down 90mbps from wan to wlan on two phones and a tablet, well then there's your sign lol. All these speeds are on n WiFi, I haven't even tried ac because all my machines that need all available bandwidth are hardwired. The router hasn't even required rebooting unless one counts firmware updates and such. Hardline lan to lan is right about 100 MB/s.there's an even faster model out called the ac68u but it's significantly more expensive.

I have the 32GB LTE version... Using an Asus RT-N66U as my access point...
On 2.4 ghz I get 22.5 mbps down and 7.5 mbps up*
On 5 gzh I get 68.4 mbps down and 11.5 mbps up... which is the max speeds I see from my ISP.
*note: there are about 18 strong 2.4 ghz networks visible at my location (surrounded by apartment buildings). 2.4 ghz performance consistently suffers with this level of interference across all of my connected devices.
As far as the RT-N66U goes... I'm very happy with it's performance and range of signal. I was a long time WRT54G user with tomato. This matches almost perfectly.

WiFi a little slow for me

Flashed CM11 last nite and so far it exceeds my expectations except for wifi speeds. I have an ac router and my network speeds are 150mbps down. But on this phone my speed on 2.4ghz tops of at 41mbps (not terrible, a little faster than my old phone) but 5ghz its really struggling. I just tested it at 14 mbps. That's after switching channels on my router before that it came in between 32 and 36. I was expecting it to break 100mbps since my other ac devices consistently clock in at 150 to 165mbps.
Before I start poking around my router settings...anyone else experiencing slower speeds? I didn't try the speed tests on stock fire os so not sure if this issue is restricted to CM or fire phone or if its my network settings. Just looking for others' experiences.

A70 wifi network speed

Is this max network speed for a70?
This is screenshoot form wifi settings.
On other phones i get 130mbps.
mine says 65. Ultra slow downloads. Heard some people talkin about using the 5 Ghz band of certain equipped routers or n band. It is just so slow downloading from my wlan I figured it must have something greater wrong with it. Like hackers again...who knows.
This is what mine says
On mine is 72mbps network speed and cant get over 49mbps download speeed on speedtest.net
433Mpbs on 802.11AC for me
I get a picture 130 mbps on my oreo device but both pie devices say 65 mBps.
My 1000/100/10 switch connects ethernet to various devices which easily shuttle the expected 80-130 actual MB/s around of large filetypes.
I don't have any sort of 5 Ghz router just the crappy device that the company sent out. And on that the MAC filter keeps getting disabled which increases my paranoia. Till 2 weeks ago I used the same crappy standard gateway/router for 6 years and frankly it was equal or better experience. At least that one started up reasonably fast. And its MAC filter was always on. But that could just indicate that the neighborhood brats had an easy backdoor to that one and didn't have to brute force off the MAC filter.
In my opinion the MAC filter getting disabled (now a few different times it has happened) indicatives a much much larger problem
I have been intending to get my own personal router for a while but there are too many options so I haven't had the scope to choose one yet.
Other phone in network displays 117mbps and is a Pie.
On same network 2.4ghz on s8,s7 i get 130mbps and on a70 72mbps max.
Just tried 5ghz on same network and got 150mbps it is a little faster.
But on 2.4ghz 72mbps is max.
hi guys
i have also same problem . cannot connect more than 72mbps , with 5ghz 150mbps max . something wrong but i could not find what is the problem .
you guys found any solution ?

i think all a70 phones are like that
I just tested and got 158Mbs with a 5Ghz wifi connection, although only around 60Mps on 2.4Ghz.
Andre
I'll check mine later and see if I can figure out what's happening
Right next to the router I can see 96mbps in 2.4Ghz
Must be something wrong. I got 433mbps.
Nothing is wrong.
The Snapdragon 675 supports 2x2 chains on WiFi, but the A70 only has a 1x1 antenna so it connects at half the speed.
Link speeds on the A70 are as follows:
2.4 GHz = 72 Mbps
2.4 GHz (with 256 QAM) = 96 Mbps
5 GHz = 433 Mbps
On all devices with 2x2 on WiFi, the speeds above will be doubled on those.
These are in ideal network conditions with great signal strength and low interference. These numbers could reduce if you are far from the router.
This is not abnormal. A lot of mid-range devices only have 1x1 for WiFi.

Nexus 5X Wifi slow speeds/weak signal

I bought a Nexus 5X from ebay a few months ago sold as new condition.
I'm having different issues with the Wifi. First the signal strength and range are much worse than all my other devices. In one room of the house farthest from the router it loses connection every few minutes and maintains a speed test result of less than 10Mbps with 2.4 GHz. With 5 GHz it can't even see the access point.
My OnePlus 7 Pro gets 40+ Mbps on both 2.4 and 5 GHz with no issues at all from the same location.
With a different ethernet connected wireless access point in the room the Nexus 5X gets 25-30 Mbps, which is acceptable but it should be faster considering it has full signal strength.
With the phone right next to the router connected to 5 GHz it will show a full speed of 44 Mbps but file downloads (using thinkbroadband test downloads) never load faster than about 100 KB/s which isn't even close to 44 Mbps. I can't even upload to my local network file share at more than 1 MB/s.
I'm not sure how speedtest.net is showing fast speeds but file transfers are extremely slow. The signal range is much worse than any other device I have.
I had a Nexus 5 before this 5X and didn't start to have wifi issues until it was more than 5 years old. Is it possible that this phone was refurbished but sold as new? Or is this just common and I shouldn't expect better?
I've tried two routers and different Android ROMs from 6.0 up to 9, all with similar results which confirms this is a hardware issue.
I've tried contacting my ISP for these issues in the past but they always respond saying their tests show nothing wrong so its not a problem.
I have the squaretrade warranty from ebay but is it worth it trying to get this issue fixed or if i get another phone will it have the same issue?
Web browsing works fine but file downloads and uploads are extremely slow.
