Xperia S Rumors - Sony Xperia S, Acro S, Ion

Hey guys, I just need to ask you a few questions, because I`m not sure which phone to buy, this one or the galaxy s2. I`ve read on a few places that touch sensitive buttons on the xperia s are not quite responsive, that the battery drains quite fast and that there is not much available ram upon reboot. Can someone please confirm or decline these things, I would really appreciate it.

You will get used to the touch sensitive button in a few days. My friends have had the S2 for a while and battery life is similar. Never heard about the RAM issue. Never faced it. BTW don't you think its a bit late to buy these devices? Buy an S3/XZ or Nexus device if you want a futureproof device.

Thanks for your reply. I know they`re a bit outdated but to be honest right now I can`t afford anything better. In fact I could but I`m a student, and I have many other costs. And for me the xperia s is a good phone for that particular amount of money. It can only be compared to S2. If someone has a suggestion please write it down, or write down your experiance with XS.

Well, for the same budget u will get S3.. Or Iphone4s.. If u r going for used ones.. Not first hand.. Ofcourse u r going for used ones and i think Galaxy nexus is going to be good.. It will get a couple more generations of Google's work.. And thereare other good devices which are new with this price range to look.. I wouldnt buy this if i were u at this stage.. Even though my phone rocks, i would try to get a different and new device, since day by day this phone is gonna get obselete...

Not really, in my country xperia s costs about 224 USD, and S3 is about 350 USD. It`s true that it will get obsolete but so will any other phone. I wanted to buy iphone 4s but I don`t know, it has only 512mb of ram, a 1.0 ghz cpu. and besides that the screen is only 3.5".

As for the RAM and the battery drain, I'd say it depends on the ROM you use. If you don't care about further updates not being released, I would go for the Xperia S. If not so, you should go for a Samsung Galaxy Nexus or a second hand Google Nexus 4, Samsung Galaxy S3 or a Sony Xperia T/V.

I don`t really care about further updates because I`m planing to buy a new phone in the future. At the moment s3 and nexus are to expensive. Xperia T has almost identical features, but as you said it`s newer than xs

look my friend ,, about buttons yes its kinda not responsive if u put a screen protector but u will get used to it ,, i have xperia sl for a year now ,, about the battery according to ur use ,, i am lucky i guess with my 1.7 gh it never lag ,, but on the other hand it kinda got hot while playing (root solve this a little bit ) in the end go for xperia Z if u can or any new devices coz i guess support for this devices reached end

between XS and S2, i prefer XS. if you got other option, go for Nexus 4.

Since you've had the Arc for a while now...are you happy with it or do you regret it?

Now that its been out a bit do you still love the Arc or wish you bought something else?
I am getting my new phone tomorrow finally, going to stomp into Rogers and pick it up cash...but I am still STILL stuck : /
I am trying to decide between the Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, and Nexus S...
So you guys still happy with the Arc? I am leaning towards the Arc the most but don't want another x10 mistake : (
Thanks
Happy, happy, happy.
Don't regret it at all, only thing I find annoying is the massive amount of Bloatware... but that could easily be sorted out if I wasn't just too lazy to work myself through the root thread.
That depends? What kind of phone did you have before? And make sure you update to2.3.3 or you wont be happy

Samsung Captivate.
Oh I should say that I plan on keeping the device stock.
I have the Arc since the beginning of May and I'm really happy with my Arc.

I had the Captivate before. Still like it more than the arc. Loved the feel of the device, felt solid (the arc feels cheap at first since it way lighter and the back cover is made of plastic) and of course, the S-AMOLED is beautiful, no matter what some fanboys here have to say.
Still, the arc is a performing device, a sexy one at that and very comfortable to use. The Exmor camera is sick and the screen displays real, beautiful colors.
By the way, Rogers apparently announced they will have the Infuse 4G so you might want to add that device on your list.

I come from an iPhone 2 ( yep the first one ) and LOVE my ARC. I have fun playing with all the apps, moding the themes, it's sexy, looks nioce, works well.
I love the Arc. Haven't regretted it for one second. Still I can't compare to the other devices. For me it's fast, the screen is beautiful. I can't get enough of it.
First few days the battery didn't last long but now I easily get through the day.
Love my Arc. Also before the 2.3.3 update. ;-)

Seeing as I swapped a samsung galaxy s for my arc I'm very pleased with it ;-)

I'm still very happy with my Arc. Now that we have custom kernels and the work on cm7 really has begun, it gets even better. I admit the battery cover isnt the best out there (very glitchy, fingerprint magnet, sometimes squeaks), but thats about it. It's snappy, it's beauitiful, except the battery cover well made, it has a gorgeous screen...
I'll chip in; very happy with the Arc. In my work I get to play with everything O2 sells and what did it for me with the Arc is the blend of it looking and feeling very smart to use, having a great camera and Sony Ericsson's committment to supporting it and keeping it up to date.
Back to back with the Galaxy S II, the Arc is less responsive, but has fewer battery chewing bugs*. Realistically**, the S II's biggest advantage over the Arc isn't the processor or internal RAM, but the onboard storage, meaning users don't need to buy a memory card for 12 Gb or so of space for media.
*in my experience and readers may vary.
**I know, I know, I'm a geek by trade but I'd get bored of justifying the S II by talking about dual core processors and 800+ Mb of program memory...

had the arc sins launch. and i love it.... nuff said

aint the s2 dual core just too 500 cores? it aint 2 1ghz cores is it??
and is there really any point in dual core? are any of the apps even coded to make use of 2 cores?
if i right now had to choose the arc or s2 damn its a hard one..... on paper...... it would have to be the s2............ but there so so close the only way to really pick is to have a proper play around with them.....
there both around the same price 500 pound so go in the shop and tell them you would like to see and have a good play with both phones 500 pound is alot of money for a phone make sure you pick the right one for you
ps..... watch for the back of the s2 ( bat cover its proper crap) its about as thick as a hair

Bought Arc at launch in NA and am very happy with the device in all respects.

[Q] Should I keep my Xperia arc s or sell it to buy other phones?

Is it hard for Xperia arc s to catch up with other phone like samsung galaxy s2 and iphone 4s?
Should I sell it?
Wait if jb comes to arc s then you can have that no need to sell wait for sony announcement
If you think these phones will improve your mobile life, then yes, but if you want one just to be up to date then don't bother,I had an iPhone4s and capability wise its not that different to the Arc S also I felt it had a big lack of customization compared to the Arc S e.g ROMS, firmwares, themes etc

I've just bought one so maybe not a objective adviser but that deepends what you need. For me arc s better that sgs 2. Better direct sun behavior than super amoled, almost as good camera beside 720 not 1080 recording, brighter screen, not as smooth web browsing but ok on ics, ant+ support, and half a price of sgs 2 in my carrier offer...
Wysyłane z mojego LT18i za pomocą Tapatalk 2
if I were to sell it, I would certainly not get an iPhone!
i've been thinking of selling my arc s as work issued us with an xperia s, but now everytime i pick up my arc, i fall in love with it again (seems all the lags and cracks are easy to forget! lol), might sell it and get the xperia t so at least i can still have a reminder of the perfect shape!
This is like tryin to get to the end of a rainbow mate....
So you sell your Arc S for something newer then....... 2 months later your "upgrade" is behind again...
IMHO the Arc S is still a great fone (I have one)
If you want to freshen it up why not try one of the ICS/JB roms in the developer forum?
As above. I've had my Arc for 16 months, I chose it above the sgs2 as I believed(and still do) that the screen and looks of the Arc outweigh the performance of the s2. I've been trying to make up my mind about a new phone since February, and while I'd be lying if I said there's not much difference between my arc and an s3 it still does what I need it to do. Probably the next nexus, or even the xperia T, will push me to change.

THIS.
Agree with you.
I was using a Nokia 5800 since 2010 and recently bought the Arc S and only because it was cheap. Only thing that are annoys me is the battery life... I' d say it's 50% less efficient in comparison with the 5800. :\

[Q] Xperia S or Galaxy SIII?

Hello Members of XDA,´
I am about to buy a new smartphone. So far I own a NEO and must say that until this moment I am happy with it but is time to buy a new one. For some reasons so far Sony keep satisfied me that is why I have some doubts on changing from Sony to other brand.
Now the big issue: Xperia S or Galaxy SIII?
Besides all arguments my only issues with Xperia S are:
Battery is not removable what in case of malfunction in battery I can´t replace it.
Not able to expand memory.
For me both phones cost the same so: Xperia S or Samsung Galaxy SIII?
Thanks for your help and comments.

Hi. It depends on what you want to use the phone for. The Xperia S is more of a camera/music phone while the s3 is more of a "hacker" phone with a good processor. The s3 have a bigger screen size while the xperia s has a higher pixel density. So it's really all about preference. What do you want to get out of it?
Thanks for your reply.
I am aware of the differences between the 2 phones.
The S3 screen is very close to be to bigger to me. On the other hand the Xperia S have a nice camera and I also believe that the Xperia will handle very well all my major needs. Don´t forget I won a Xperia Neo and must say that until now Xperia Neo does everything I ask him to do so the 1.4 processor in Xperia S should be much better.
The major issue is the opportunity I have for the same price choose between S3 and Xperia S. After some days the opportunity is gone.
No problem.
I have the Xperia S and personally i would rather have the s3. But thats just me.

I would say S3. Not due to the nice plastic design, but due to bigger screen, faster updates and just better spec in general.
The S3 can still take some decent pictures and still got sd card and a battery you can replace.
Somewhere around..
For me S3 will cost only 210€. This a promotion from my operator.
Xperia S cost 230€.
S3 has stronger battery and faster update.

I Love my xperia... But If cost is same I'd suggest s3... More development, support, hardware, difference in camera isn't that much to justify reason to bend xperia's way.. Having said that I prefer xperia s build... The s3 feels fragile and less like a piece of hardware.
Just my opinion...
Sent from my Xperia S using xda app-developers app
This is really a no-brainer. If design is not more important to you, than S3 all the way.
I own the Xperia acro S, but if I were you I'd rather get the S3, my dad has one and I tried it, it was really great and smooth!
S3 because:
- More developers means more ROMs, kernels, hacks, etc.
- Better chipset, quad core CPU and quad core Mali GPU for ultimate gaming experience. I played my dad's S3 and it was very smooth, Asphalt 7 was flawless! My Xperia runs Asphalt like sh*t!
- Better screen, I know Super AMOLEDs are oversaturated, but hey, according to my experience, it was great! IMAGES WERE SO SHARP AND CRISP!
BUT if you're not a gamer, you're just a normal man who wants a stylish cameraphone, go for the Xperia S.
But man seriously, buy the Xperia Z! Or stay with your current device first, save money, then wait for Sony's next flagship with Snapdragon 600 chipset, or wait for official release of HTC One or Galaxy S4
That's all I can say, good luck man!

[Q] Z or SP for S?

Hello guys,
after the long wait for Jelly bean on my Xperia S ive had enough of that phone. It lags a lot in the Homescreen, its slow very often, the walkman random pauses, its sluggish and the support is as good as dead. So now im Thinking of buying a new phone in mid Juli. So my question is: What phone do you think i should get? Ive got my eye on the Z and the SP. I know SP is only a midrange phone, but I completely love the design of it. The Z is more expensive, but probably the better phone. I like Sony a lot, because of the general design and the UI. I wont even start about the support because,... well you know.. And im begging you, no Samsung suggestions )

might as well go all out and buy the Z. Its flagship status pretty much guarantees it will be first in line for updates (at least for this year, cant say anything bout next year). better specs and great design, plus water(Proof/resistant).
Yeah I thought so.. I just hope Sony fixes everything in Jelly Bean..
noo!! i refer you to uy SP i know Z is better in everything than sp but SP is simple and just like the S u can use it with 1 hand and its battery life is incredible than the Z so i refer you to go with SP

+1 me to the xperia sp is my next phone
If you are going to spend your bucks on Xperia Z range phones, I would suggest you to buy the HTC One...
Don't buy the SP, it's a mid - range non flagship phone - - - - - SO FORGET ABOUT LONG TERM SUPPORT(Look how Sony is treating their last year flagship XS, so SP will suck big time in terms of support from Sony)..
Yeah the xperia S is almost dead to Sony, thats the only thing ( except the the bugs) that i really hate about this phone..
Don't think and just go for Z. It has amazing support from Sony and should even have long term support. I think that it even has good developer support on XDA, No need to say anything about the performance. I can easily run any game or app without a single lag on my XZ. There is enough ram to anything that you want. Around 1-1.2 GB free ram is perfect for all user apps. XZ and SP are not comparable. If money doesn't matter to you, just go for a XZ. Believe me, you won't regret it.

Yeah HTC One is better in my opinion (even though I'm a total Sony fan). It's chipset and display is top-notch. Battery life is also better than Z.
HTC One - over 10 hours of video playback, almost 10 hrs of web browsing and 13 hrs of 3G talk time
Xperia Z - 5 and a half hour of video playback, 6 and a half hour of web browsing, 16 hrs of 3G talk time.

Despite its 4MP Ultrapixel camera...HTC is trying to provide continuous software updates to provide better camera quality and improvements.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking.. Lets just hope the JB for Xperia S really fixes everything
Leaving my own personal rants on Sony's software support out of it; i too am in the same boat currently owning an Ion.
As far as the big Android phones for 2013, this is all i've noticed so far...still have plenty of time to figure it out before my upgrade, and i'm hoping i'm happy enough with JB to just wait it out until next year.
Sony Xperia Z/ZL: by far the absolute best physical design i've seen so far in a phone. 5" screen freaked me out at first, but its barely bigger than my Ion, just much more screen. I haven't held a ZL yet, but the Z is pretty incredible if you haven't seen it in person yet. At the same time, its a big 'who knows' on its support. Going by 2012, it'll get one update late summer...then barely ever get mentioned again...Soon after 18 more phones will be available, and Sony will continue having no realistic way of supporting devices they already sold.
HTC One: Good design overall. Most are reporting its very durable, good for me as i love dropping things that are expensive. Not sure about all that layered UI stuff they're up to yet though. Only bad thing for me would be the lack of SD card support.
Samsung Galaxy S4: By far the most popular choice, creating a community of users that rivals Apple, and the support that comes with it. Too bad, though, it looks like a toy. I wouldn't be surprised if the box included a Sesame Street DVD.
for all the above reasons, i'd be very happy just waiting it out and seeing what 2014 brings. maybe sony will turn it around company wise, maybe not. But i still think the Z is too early in this mess for it not to share the EXACT same fate as last years flagship.

Don't buy the SP, it's a mid - range non flagship phone - - - - - SO FORGET ABOUT LONG TERM SUPPORT(Look how Sony is treating their last year flagship XS, so SP will suck big time in terms of support from Sony)..

Unfortunately, the midranger like XP are getting JB 1st before XS. Not to mention XS got ICS latter than 2011 devices.
The thing is the cost of XZ or HTC ONE is twice the price of XSP.

Yes, of course those phones cost twice as much as the XS. But lets face it, the XS has horrible support and an extremley buggy ICS.. Why do you guys think the HTC one is so much better? It probably is a bit better, but id really like to know why. Andthe Z is now already available for 500€ which is a lot less than the HTC

Which Quad/Dual Core device is the best?

Hi guys.. I am planning to sell my phone.. I am just confused on which phone to buy.. Xperia Z, Nexus 4, Xperia SP, Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini, HTC One Mini, Sony Xperia Z1 Mini.. Or should i just go with iPhone 5?I can't afford to buy flagships.. Budget isn't that great, nor worst.. :silly: But any suggestions??

Z1 mini is the best out of the above, but not the best price of course.

Lg optimus g (the at&t version) gives good bang for buck. I got mine for $180 on ebay. I miss my ions camera and sony launcher but this phone performs rather well.

I actually bought 2 of these, one for my mom and one for me. Mine was carrier locked and the unlock code costed me $2, my moms phone came already unlocked from the seller. I'm using mine in honduras (central america).Sure, UI is not as great as sony's but there are a few roms out there with stock lg UI as well as 4.3 and 4.4 roms. I'm using nocturnal rom(discontinued unfortunately) which is stock LG UI with the sony walkman, movies and gallery app. I like some of the LG tricks though like qslide(which lets you keep watching a video and use the phone's other functions) and quicknote. Unlocking the bootloader was easy with freegee(downloaded it from play store).
My suggestion is xperia z bcoz have good development from good developer

I would have loved to get a z or zl, but the steep $400 plus pricetag for it was waaaaaay above my budget.

Yes so have i thought about getting it.. Since it has official cm support and it will have the same for 3 mpre years atleast because of the h/w.. And devs like niaboc79, zeroimfinity and others make it look like a cool phone.. And also its within my budget.. So probably it is the one.. On other hand, i am thinking of Nexus4.. :/

Why Nexus 4 and not the Nexus 5? I think the Nexus 5 would be the best device for you if it fits your price. Otherwise wait for the Moto G, it's getting launched in India in January 2014. Both these devices are the best value for money you can get.
Xperia Z

Nexus devices are boring UI.. I agree they are the best devices in the market.. But what's a Smartphone without some cool stock features.. I would definitely miss Sony's UI, Media apps and Camera.. And obviously music quality.. And also the look of the phone.. Although u can get all kinds of MODs, but they never are the same.. Xperia Z suits all my needs.. Its waterproof, quad core and 2gb ram, official support for 1 more year atleast, official cm support, official cwm support, lots of awesome devs, mods and cool features the phone exclusively provides.. U don't need anything else for another 2 years.. That's an awesome device.. Although on the other hand, Nexus 4 is cheap and good quality device.. Nexus 5 also is worth buying.. But i may have to skip Nexus and just go with Xperia Z..
its depend on what you looking for on the phone ,, i would suggest HTC one .. or Nexus 5
but if you gonna replace your phone why not to save more money and keep the Xperia S for another months and get a High level phone ,, like Z1 or G2

I would stick with XS and buy a decent flagship a couple years later. Seriously, the only thing that is very different with the XS and the Galaxy S4 my girl uses is the battery life. XS is the same fast in UI as the S4, has comparable camera performance and in only very heavy 3D games you can see a difference. I don't mind the bigger screen, newer android edition, IR and the slimmer form factor at all. But S4 has roughly TWICE the battery life. 4.4.2 on GS4 is much less stable than on XS, with random reboots.
Don't mind if there are more roms for other phones. Our roms might be few in numbers but are all good.

On the other hand, Android 4.3 is a lot more stable on the Galaxy S4. And the memory is a big difference as well, 2GB for Galaxy S4, don't know how much of that is available for multitasking, but it will be at least 1GB more than what we have. I can barely multitask with my Xperia S. It's also a popular phone so there are lots of accessories. And it will get an official Android 4.4 ROM so the CM ROM might be less stable now, but in time it will always be more functional than what we will have. And it supports 4G, I think most people don't have 4G in their dataplan yet, but I do since recently (I don't have to pay anything extra for it either) and it's kind of bugging me that I can't use it.
If you're suggesting to stick with this phone for more years when it's already nearly 2 years old, I'm thinking you don't really care about speed in a phone. That's good for you I guess, but other people don't have that patience. And 2 years is a good age I think, also as you say battery life has nearly doubled in the last years and that's the most maddening thing about this phone.
@sudhindrakv: I think it's rather odd that you like the Xperia Z because of the CM support, but on the other hand want a phone with OEM-specific features. If you're going to use CM on it, you won't use those features anyway. In my opinion you should get a Nexus, I see you hanging around in the CM11 thread anyway. A lot of features can be ported to AOSP ROMs anyway, like the Sony media apps.

Well, 4G is not available in greece either, and according to what I read, it kills the battery, while hspa is already fast enough. I don't see much difference between 4.1 and 4.3 anyways, apart from lockscreen widgets. You are right about multitasking, though in XS it kills useless apps first.
S4 has 780 mb free ram. Our CM11 will evetually get stable too. Just my points.

No no.. What i meant was OEM specific features are my favourite.. Stock SONY is what i love the most.. I mentioned CM support because after your 2years company support ends, atleast you will have some support from development.. That's why i mentioned.. About CM11, its the only ROM i tested after eXistenZ.. Not into much testing lately, got bigger plans.. Building one myself..

It seriously only has 780 MB RAM free of the initial 2GB? I know free RAM is wasted RAM, but that's just sad. This is why I never recommend Samsung.
There are some differences under the hood between 4.1 and 4.3, like Bluetooth 4.0 support (uses a lot less battery) and OpenGL. Our CM11 will get kind of stable, I'm just going to install it now by the way, but the available amount of RAM will just keep shrinking as Rayman needs to assign more for every new version of Android it seems (has to do with ION and no proper drivers, if less RAM is assigned it'll bootloop).
And about 4G, it depends on the frequency, but if the 800MHz band is used, 4G should use less power than 3G. In my country it's still only the 1800MHz band though.

Yes.. I agree.. but 4g not yet so popular in India.. its only for rich people.. Even 3g plans are costly around here.. The only thing stopping me from thinking of buying Xperia Z is its already an year old. Another year and its completely gone.. It s gonna be a dead phone without sony support and probably devs would leave that phone and get some new one by that time.. It will be same like having Xperia S now.. Very few devs are here working for our device.. Its gonna be the same there too..
