All credit for these apps goes to @viper520. Shoutout to @zhuhang for maintaining the thread here on xda and creating some NICE impulse response samples,
I've been using ViPER4Android (V4A) for all my recent devices including the Droid DNA, S3, and the S4. So, naturally, I needed to get it on my Note 3 ASAP. There's two apps as part of this sound mod, but one is optional. The main app is called ViPER4Android FX. The current version is 2.3.1.1 and is compatible with stock rooted VZN Note 3. I use the optional app, ViPER4Android XHiFi, for superior bass and treble adjustment.
The newer versions of V4A allow for both system and user installations, but I've always installed it as a system app to ensure that it works 100% of the time (including watching movies with MX Player, YouTube, streaming with Google Play Music, etc.) So, my N3 installation instructions are as follows (note: your device MUST be rooted):
1) Download the app(s) from the original xda thread. Extract the 4.x versions of the apks from the .zip files.
2) Push both apks to system\app. Reboot so permissions get automatically fixed or manually change to rw-r-r-. (First screenie using Root Explorer).
3) Launch each app separately. Grant root access to each of them to install their drivers. They'll both prompt you to install drivers on first launch. Choose "Super Audio Quality" driver for FX. We have a quad core processor, so it can easily handle it. XHiFi is being phased out but still adds a richness I can't find in using FX alone. You must manually choose the bottom option. Reboot so it automatically fixes the permissions of the newly installed drivers.
4) After reboot, immediately go to settings\sound\music effects and choose ViPER4Android FX as the default sound processor (second screenie). NOTE: If you have a custom ROM, Music Effects may have been removed by your developer. Continue to the next step.
5) Open up /system/build.prop in text editor using any file explorer with root access. Change these lines (the bottom two apply to the VZN N3):
Code:
Ipa.decode=true to lpa.decode=false
tunnel.decode=true to tunnel.decode=false
lpa.use-stagefright=true to lpa.use-stagefright=false
NOTE: On a custom ROM, your build.prop may have been edited and these lines might not appear. They will definitely not appear if you're not on a Samsung device. You can either add these line manually for Samsung custom ROMs to ensure proper audio settings or simply continue without any build.prop edits.
6) Plug your headphones and start your favorite music app. Start up FX and enable it at the top and then check the driver status. If everything says you're processing, you're good to go. Enjoy the BEST sound on Android.
This is my tried and true installation. You can see from screenies 3 and 4 that it's definitely work on my N3. I'm not sure if installing it as a user app (just clicking the FX apk) will work or not as I didn't even try it. YMMV.
UPDATE: Tip for newer versions since this post was created:
Using the convolver is one of the most important things you can add to customize sound to your liking. You can access the convolver by going the UI Setting in the menu and selecting Moderate or Expert. The app will close and when you open it again, it will be under the equalizer. Once enabled, Download and extract IRS files to <storage>/ViPER4Android/Kernel/<paste files here>. If the directory doesn't exist, simply create it using a file manager. IRS's can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2216193
I've seen this mentioned before but I'm not super familiar with it. Does this make THAT much of a difference? Everything sounds amazing on my N3 after my Galaxy Nexus.
I'm going to head over to the thread to check it out but I'd like to hear anything else you guys have to say about it.
Thanks for the guide.

Yes, the difference is VERY drastic. You'll notice it as soon as you begin tinkering. I'd post my settings, but everyone has their own sound preferences. The great thing is, this mod accommodates all musical tastes. As you see from my screenies, I let FX do most of the work, as it should, and only use XHiFi's Audio Reconstruct feature.
You're welcome for the guide. Post back in here how you like it/any installation problems I can help with.
I use it for blue tooth through my cars radio. It takes the sound quality from crappy factory speakers to the point where I see no need to replace them

Does this work for the regular speakers, like speakerphone, ringtones/notifications? My issue is that everything seems too quiet. Will this help me?
Thanks!

Yes, it affects sound coming out of the regular speaker including speakerphone, but does not boost ringtones or notifications. I think this thread will help with that. Which reminds me...
I've been messing with V4A for so long, I forgot to include the instructions for Samsung devices in this post in my original guide. Fixing now.
Followed instructions. This mod is not working. Under processing, it says "No".

I know this sounds crazy, but that's usually not the important part. The important thing is if you can tell the difference in sound. If there's no modification, then there's a problem. Have you tried other music players? Have you tried the steps here?
When I go to the settings -> Sound -> Music Effects, it force closes. Otherwise, the mod sounds like it is working.
The only problem with the updated fx is there is no max gain now so it's not any louder

one of the best parts of viper is the .IRS samples
You have to go into "expert mode" for this.
then download the .irs files. fromt he original viper thread.
The best one I found was from a vintage 1980s technics Cassette deck.
It sounds awesome!
V4A FX has been updated to v2.3.1.3. Changelog:
FX version: v2.3.1.3
Notice: v2.3.1.3 partially-support Android 4.3.1 and Android 4.4 OS.
1.Bug fix.
2.Update translations.
3.Add a new bass mode.

The new bass mode is called Subwoofer and it's VERY deep bass. You can update by going to the OP of the V4A thread if you have it installed as a system app or just use the menu button and check for update if you have it installed as a data app.
Worked perfect on my rooted note 3. Thanks

thanks. wasn't working for me but one more reboot after editing build.prop did the trick.
I cannot get this to work for nothing. i do not notice any difference on headset or speaker. I followed OP instructions and nothing. My FX menu doesn't have the different bass options either. any ideas of how i can get this working.

go to settings then ui settings then expert then you will have all of the options. make sure you go to setting and check for new updates too. the new update is pretty sweet. it is a huge difference. you can make is very loud also by changing max gains

Google fixed the known Froyo bug with AAC streaming audio.. My question is how does one go about compiling (if possible) and incorporating into the roms? Is it a file that can be patched or does an overall library have to be rebuilt?
When it gets to you, its a complete file replacement.
*Impatiently waits for froyo source to finish downloading*
Test patch. Make a nandroid first. If you don't know how to make a nandroid, please ignore this post and do not try the patch.
http://adrynalyne.stfuthxbye.net/test_patches/stagefright.zip
don't forget to change your build.prop file to enable all the stagefright to "...=true"
Adrynalyne, maybe add a clean build.prop file with the market fix and 32M VM heap? Makes it easier for most people who don't know how to edit the build.prop file
Yeah I can do that, once I get confirmation all is well with it.
Guys, don't forget to test it using 3G. Disable your WiFi. So:
1. Change your build.prop so that all stagefright lines =true
2. Enable High Quality in your Pandora preferences
3. Test this with 3G data only.
So far it seems cleaner to me. Going to the car to test it out over bluetooth.

Man, you always give to the Android community.
Thank You!
Just doing my part.
It helps that the bug was annoying me too
I created a new post which also has a build.prop included that will set stagefright changes back to default.
Don't know what everyone's results are, but my streaming music sounds spot on with my mp3 files.
Tested the same exact songs via pandora and .mp3 file on my phone, and did the same with Slacker. No more music from a tunnel sound. All over bluetooth to my car stereo, headphones, and directly plugging to my car stereo. Lastly, m.youtube.com works again in all my browsers. Even listening to Pandora in Normal mode sounds good.
i've been really excited at the idea of ditching my mp3 player and only carrying my phone. usually it will play one song, but then program will lock up after that and eventually require a force close. it seems to happen in different roms as well. BUT it also happens in my sound and display settings when i try to increase or decrease the notification volume in alarm settings or when i try to increase the alarm volume. I'm pretty much afraid of any slider options. I'm sure others have had this problem, i just want to know if there's a quick fix or its just a problem with the o.s.
if it helps i am rooted. i thought it was my processor clock settings being too low, but it happens on performance mode as well. i am using the fascinate music player too, but i don't think it matters. thanks.

I'm having the same problem here using the Music Player that comes with SyndicateROM and WinAmp. I'm using Eclair (SyndicateROM) with the DI18 modem and have never had this problem before. Even if I go into Astro and try to play the file that way, it still will only play one song.
If you need any information just let me know.
I'm on stock just did one click root. Native player worked fine for me... No problems whatsoever, multi tasking was hit or miss but pretty damn good, hard to overdo it and stop the music for me....

UPDATE (4/23/13)
Moto released an OTA update that solves the sound issues. Do not install beats, just update your phone (98.15.66.XT907)
I like to use noise-isolating IEM's for headphones, which in turn lets me listen to music at very low volume levels. The razr m has a vast amount of hissing and popping at low volumes when listening to Spotify, Pandora, and Google music. Here's the only fix I could find that suppressed the offensive noises enough to keep me from getting a different phone.
Step 1. Root phone, using the thread in this forum
Step 2. Get the Beats Audio Root app from Google Play
Step 3. Activate Beats Audio driver
Simple as that. I'm all ears for other approaches that have worked.

I would b cautious about installing this since we cant exactly boot into recovery and do a nand restore if we don't like it. Basically to get rid of it we have to go back to stock firmware and re root. I always thought google music player had poor sound quality on all devices. I use player pro with dsp pack, sound quality is pretty good. I haven't really noticed low level hissing/noise mainly because I never listen at low levels. Current in ear headphones are NuForce 700x, Klipsch S4 and Soul (by Ludacris) SL99s all of which are fairly good.

I was just warning OTHERS that if you install it and decide you don't want it you have to unroot and re root (factory reset and root again) which is a fair and proper warning to give considering we have no means to back up via recovery before applying it. It sure made me think twice about it (if we had recovery I wouldn't think twice)

where's a link in this thread? There's only one Beats audio root app (well two, the free and the paid version).. The drivers are suppose to be the same, the paid version just has more features so I don't see why it wouldn't.
Just get it from Google play. I put it on my phone and it works good on headphones. The built in speaker is kinda decent but the opening is oval and most of the speaker is covered. Just get the free version and then delete the app. The drivers will still be there. Or just download DSP manager from cyanogenmod. Keep in mind that beats and DSP manager will NOT work together. I downloaded a zip called awesome beats from somewhere on here that let them both work together on my stratosphere but that thing is broke till I get 160 spare box for the new screen and digitizer.(lil pet project!) And keep in mind that RSd lite is your best friend with this phone. If you can get into boot loader then its not borked!

So getting it from Google play wouldn't help the uninstalling problem? Since the drivers will always be there even after uninstalling?
Can DSP manager cancel out beats?
Can rsd lite delete beats?

Any updates on this?
I found this. I'm not sure if flashing dsp will cancel out beats. I'm on a different phone now. Might get this phone again in a week or two. But if you flash it in and it works it has removed beats. If it (dsp) fc then it hasn't.
I recommend making an update before you try this because there is a slight possibility of a soft brick situation.

UPDATE
The latest OTA update solves this problem completely (98.15.66.XT907). No need for beats anymore.
If you did this install, here's how to wipe root through SBF'ing:
- Backup your stuff
- Settings > Privacy > Factory reset > Erase Everything
- Boot into fast boot (turn phone off, hold volume keys and power, release, use volume down to get to fastboot, volume up to select)
- SBF, get SBF file from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2017200)
- I was successful with RSDLite6.1.4.msi and Motorola_PreRelease_Mobile_Drivers_5.9.1_32bit.msi
- *note, it took 5 attempts, but the fifth rsdlite flash attempt finally went through
- Setup phone again, check for update, install OTA update, done
To include Screen Writing's screenshot sound, that noise has got to go.
Third party apps seem like clutter and bloat so I thought about deleting the system/media/audio/ui oggs themselves. I also thought editing those files by turning them into silent audio files but I wanted to run it by you first. Help!
Use xposed framework

I have an HTC One M8 (which I adore) and I've having small problem for which I'm seeking help. When I go to Settings>Sound & Notification>Ringtone I see a list of the system ringtones. I want to add my own but when I press the Plus (+) key nothing happens. I'm not presented with a file browser, message or even an error. It's very possible that something I've loaded on my phone or a process I've frozen is causing the problem but so far I can't track it down. If anyone has thought or opinion on this issue I sure would love to hear it.
Thank you!

Dude you are a genius. I tried to follow your instructions but I couldn't find an app called Music player. I looked around for a while and then figured I'd go check Titanium Backup. There is an app called Music which I had frozen. As soon as I unfroze it I was able to open my file using the app and then was able to set as ringer.
On a hunch I went back and checked the settings for ringers and now the + sign works again. It was the frozen Music app which was preventing the + from working.
Thank you sir!
