Hi everyone,
My Galaxy Nexus decided to factory reset itself for no apparent reason. Since everything has vanished into the ether (apart from the Google play list of apps which I'll apparently have to re-download and my contacts list) I thought it might be a good idea to upgrade from Jellybean 4.1.2 to 4.3.
I've used NRT to back up the contact list (no messages or photos are left) and my apps are on the Cloud (at least they say I need to install them when I go through the play store) .
I've had a look around the forums for guides (I generally try to RTFM before I ask for help) but I'm rather confused.
Is there a specific guide that will give me step-by-step instructions on how to upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.3? I've had a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312 but because I'm a complete and utter n00b I don't know whether or not it's the right procedure.
Help please!
Thanks,
Kat.

First, read a bunch on this topic. This guide right here will walk you through rooting and upgrading your OS: http://galaxynexusroot.com/. Here is more info: http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Samsung_Galaxy_Nexus_(toro)
Also, not sure which version of the gnex you have. but if you have the american verizon version (toro), this guide will walk you through step by step and includes all the files for a basic vanilla version of 4.3: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/36706-romaosp431101113-shiny-ota-like-stock-android-431-jls36i-no-bugs/
Once you install one rom, you can install any. Some of the more popular are cyanogenmod and aokp.
Basically what you are going to do is unlock your phone, install a back up program like clockworkmod, then install a new operating system (rom), gapps (google apps like gmail), and update your radios to 4.2. These guides should walk you through. Its actually pretty easy on the gnex.
Also as for backup, i personally use mybackup and others like titaniumbackup. I think titanium requires root but mybackup does not. Google also should update your contacts/apps for you automatically.
Thank you so much!

From reading this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728555 I believe I have the GSM yakjudv - Variant for Australia.
I'm pretty sure my phone is an i950t (I can't check right now because it appears to be downloading something in Odin mode and I don't want to touch it).
Will this work with the Verizon guide?
Thanks again

I would find a guide for your specific phone. I would not try out the verizon gnex tutorial.

Would you happen to know how I could find out which phone I have? I've googled some apps that are supposed to tell you but they don't exist anymore.
Under the settings I have build number: JZO54K.I9250TDVL2
Or should I just wait for KitKat (and will they be doing a rollout for my nexus anyway)?
Thanks,

Its either sprint, verizon, or gsm. If you do not have sprint or verizon as your carrier and you are out of the US its the GSM version.
Toolkit
I'd experienced the same thing as you..you can just use toolkit..easy..you just need to understand it..some of the toolkit might already updated to android 4.3 factory images already..if not,you can simply download the factory images by yourself and put it on the necessary folder and...bamm..flash it via the toolkit..there are many toolkit outthere..just search it for device anyway..
Regards.
upgrade my HKC Tablet from 4.1.1 to 4.3

Hey all from the XDA community. lets get straight to the point. I wanna update my Galaxy Nexus. Couple questions before doing so as i am a noob and still not familiar with all the jibberish floating around this forum.
Background info (if not interested skip this paragraph)
There are no chinese keyboard in my current android version, 4.0.1, and was looking around the internet and i stumbled upon a mention that the Yakju version have a chinese keyboard. Some more digging and i found out that my nexus is actually lagging behind as there is already a 4.0.2 here. And with more digging i found out more about rooting and other exciting stuffs. but for now i just wanna ask these questions:
1. What is a Yakju?
2. is it safe for me to update my current version up to 4.0.2 by following these instructions?
3. Why is my phone not updating automatically to 4.0.2? i pressed system updates couple of times on the phone to no avail.
Thank you very much for your attention.
I would like to welcome my noob ass to the community.

1. What is a Yakju?
- A yakju is a unicorn that looks like a yak that got run over by a car (thats why we have a curved screen )
In all seriousness its just the code name of the GSM model.
2. is it safe for me to update my current version up to 4.0.2 by following these instructions?
- Don't know what instructions you are talking about (forgot link?)...but yeah 4.0.2 was officially released so as long as you know what you are doing you should be fine.
3. Why is my phone not updating automatically to 4.0.2? i pressed system updates couple of times on the phone to no avail.
-What model do you have? If you are in the US you should get the update (i cant say about other countries.
Just give me more info...maybe i can help you
EDIT: IS ALL YOU WANT A CHINESE KEYBOARD?
(if you do you can just download it from the market)
If all you want is chinese keyboard support you can download a keyboard that has it.
The reason why I give you this option instead is that updating to yakju is not necessary to stay up to date, it just means you'll get updates slightly faster. And changing to yakju means completely wiping the device, which some people don't want to do. If you do decide to do this, we can help you further in that direction.
In response to your last question, if you aren't on yakju (the 'official' Google build), you are at the mercy of your carrier or Samsung as to when you get the newer releases of ICS.
There really isn't any risk of updating to an official build (on that isn't custom) as it's still somewhat official. All you'll need is fastboot and a couple of other miscellaneous tools and drivers if I recall correctly.

I don't know what i am on right now. how do i find out what version of the software i am on?
i know its kinda unimportant or somewhat shallow but i wanna have the latest software update. and i am trying to learn to type in Mandarin.
Thx guys for the reply.
You're on the software version 4.0.1... you posted it right there lol. All you know is that you're not on yakju because if you were, you'd be updated. Or if you're curious just go to this app in the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.cbruegg.officialupdate and it'll tell you.
If you want to flash yakju and get updates directly from google, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21113773&postcount=195 (btw actually do the "optional" steps to ensure you receive OTAs).
You'll first set up your drivers for your device, then use the downloads in that post and follow everything step by step. It will 100% wipe your device, so save anything important!!!! When you're done, you'll be on 4.0.2 and will be updated from that point from Google directly.
Btw again, I'm against linking to the automatic 1-click methods. I think its better and much more screw-up proof to just use fastboot. Fastboot is reliable and you won't hit snags if you follow directions. Happy flashing!
This is a one click method that is noob proof

Thanks for the app on the google play, as expected i am not on Yakju but i am on yakjuux which means i am not receiving update from google directly.
There is a couple of problem here:
1. I am using mac and i think most of the instructions are for windows. Is there any mac-friendly instruction? i found one but XDA doesn't allow me to post link..
But let's try this:
waloshin. com/how-to-flash-your-galaxy-nexus-to-the-google-yakjuk-on-mac-osx.html
so that was the only instruction for mac that i stumble upon yesterday when i look around the internet. Will this instruction work for me?
2.What's OTAs?
3.I look around the forum that there is already a version 4.0.3 but on the google code page there's only 4.0.2. what is this 4.0.3 that i've been hearing about?
Hey everyone,
Im relatively confused about this phone since there are so many threads that are for the other versions(VZW/Sprint/Intnl).
What Im looking for is any help(direction?) as to what I should do first on my Nexus that I ordered from Google Play.
What is the first thing I should do(root or unlock bootloader?) and what should I download(Roms or kernals?). Any links to said advice would be much appreciated also.
Many thanks in advance.

Thank you for the obvious and the laugh. However, I really am looking to get past the two weeks of thread reading, and get guidance from those who have this Google Play version with working roms and stuff.
unlock the bootloader, you can decide to root or flash whatever later. unlocking the bootloader does a factory reset which is why you want to do it before you do any setup or add anything to the phone

Ok, now I saw this, and I might sound newbish here, but the title of that thread is for the VZA/Sprint/GSM versions of the phone. To my understanding, even the unlocked GSM version originally sold is not the same as the current one in the Google Play store.
If the link above will work for all the phones including mine then that is what I was looking for.

Lucky for you even if u unlock the boot loader after u sign in and sync all ur stuff your data won't be erased... something about the Takju version that allows users to unlock boot loader without wiping any data =P

It will work. Yours is still GSM, yakju, takju, yakjuux, whatever. Its still GSM.
first thing you should is jump up and down, and pat yourself on the back for being tied to your carrier for a phone upgrade
I would unlock the bootloader before anything else...
Then if you're feeling brave (and before you start configuring the device to your liking) flash a third-party ROM based on 4.0.3/4 (The most recent ICS versions):
l'd recommended Cyanogenmod 9 nightlies if you like to be on the bleeding edge (Although you might have to get used to flashing EVERY day, which isn't so bad once you get used to it)
Or, moving to something like LiquidSmooth (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555667)
or
EaglesBlood ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388728).
Each of which will bring different things to the table, you'll have to do your research as to which one you'd like if you go that way.
Alternatively, just stay on stock ROM and enjoy your phone the way they intended you to...
^ Thank you for that. I was actually confused as to what order Im supposed to do things(root, unlock bootloader...Rom...Kernal??)
Ive seen a lot of positive reviews for an AOKP rom and a Frances(?) Kernal. Anyone agree they make a good match?

You unlock the bootloader first because it wipes your phone, SD card as well.
Flash clockwork mod recovery.
Flash a custom rom and kernel.
Sorted.
The guide I wrote (previously linked) details how you can also back up your applications (not that you'll really have any to begin with...but if you decide to wait) without root.
Then unlock and restore...and backup again with titanium for all future restorations.

Hi everyone,
I must apologise for adding to the large number of threads on subjects such as this, but having trawled through forums (Both here and elsewhere), I'm struggling a bit to know which guide to use.
I'm currently using a Galaxy Nexus which is running stock Android 4.0.1 yakjudv (Telstra GSM). I'm wanting to change my phone to a stock Google rom, as I currently don't get any OTA updates. I would be happy with 4.0.4, or JB. The problem I have is, having looked through all the guides, I don't know exactly what I need to do to achieve what I'm looking for. I'm trying to do the minimum to get the result, and don't need to remain rooted/unlocked after I upgrade.
As I'm quite afraid of doing something wrong, I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of the best guide to use. I've looked at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614827
and
http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/429778/how_update_your_galaxy_nexus_jelly_bean/
and have downloaded the rom from:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images (Yakju)
I would appreciate any guidance.
Thank you so much, and once again my apologies for posting yet another question. I do promise that I have tried to find the information on my own for a number of hours. I may simply be inept at searching!
Download the galaxy nexus toolkit then backup your data then install the drivers then download the factory image 4.0.4 then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to unlock the bootloader then put the galaxy nexus image file in c:\galaxynexustoolkit\google image goes here then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to install the 4.0.4 galaxy nexus image the use the galaxy nexus toolkit to root the device and to keep root use OTA root keeper from google play store then install ota jelly bean update there you go that how you install the google image on your telstra galaxy nexus and I use a galaxy nexus on Telstra

Thank you both for the replies. If I follow the guide to flash to 4.0.4 "Takju", will this cause any difficulties in using the phone here in Australia? But then when something goes wrong (it usually does with new users and toolkits), you have absolutely no idea what's happened and no way to fix it. Just spend the few minutes to learn a manual guide and understand what you're doing. You'll thank yourself when you can diagnose problems.

It'll work just fine. I've not heard anything specific about Australian users having issues being on stock Google firmware (no reason why they would). The only issue I could see is the radio not providing the best results. You can always flash back to an AUS-specific radio, although this then prevents you from auto-installing OTA's, which was your goal in the first place...

I've just tried following the guide and was going to backup my phone first, but CWM tells me 'Can't mount backup path". Does this mean there is something wrong that I should know about before I try the full process?
Sorry to double post - I thought I should just check - Last night I installed drivers using Wug's toolkit, and when I fastboot devices, I get a serial number. It also let me view the device both in normal and recovery mode.
I assumed that meant that I didn't need to reinstall the drivers. Is that correct?
Thanks so much!
Paul
I bought a used nexus its in great condition everything works but the buyer didnt tell me it was rooted already. Thats fine cause i was going to but i wanted to learn the ropes myself. Don't use a toolkit. Follow that guide posted. That guide will wipe the device completely and put you on 100% stock 4.1.1. If you want root, you can follow the last part of the guide, which has a step-by-step routine to root also.

The tools aren't inherently bad, but they're kind of a "black box" to new users, where they put their phone in and it comes out rooted/flashed. The issue occurs when something goes wrong, and the user doesn't know why because they don't understand the procedure, and they can't reverse engineer what happened to fix it. So what they end up doing is coming and posting threads, etc.
If they were doing it the "real" (manual) way, via Fastboot, they'd know what was going on and have a better understanding of what they're doing to their phone. Because we have a Nexus, there's really no reason not to just use Fastboot because it's the tool that Google gives us. You own a ~$650 (much cheaper now w/ the Play Store, but still) device, why not spend 15 minutes learning how to work with it properly?

I can understand that and i usually do want to learn the ropes but i was kind of thrust into the middle cause i bought a used nexus and it was rooted and had CWM 6 flashed to it so I am just trying to figure things out a bit or at least go back to Full stock and no recovory flashed so i can learn the ropes myself and flash recoverys myself if needed and i want to get 4.1.1 and root it myself. If possible can i use the tools to just go to stock and then learn the manual ways from there? I got adb and the fastboot.exe finally so i never had that or new i needed it and when i first used the toolkit to wipe my sd I think it installed some drivers that the tool kit told me to which im hoping are correct. I really hate to ask questions unless its needed and i apprecieate it.

The guide that was linked earlier is extremely simple to follow. It breaks everything down step by step, and you will be fully stock.
Hi, i have an unlocked Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 that has not received the android 4.2 OTA update. This is because my system is yakjuxw.
So i found a site explaining on how to switch to yakju or takju without loosing any data, apps etc:
http://andwise.net/?p=569
My questions are:
. Has anyone tried this?
. What are the cons?
. Does it void my phone's warranty?
Sorry if this has been asked or is posted somewhere else but i just cant seem to find it.
cheers!
Bruno
It's completely fine. In fact there is a thread specifically about the process that's been around for months.
Cool! Can u point me to it?
You have the same search function as I do.
Clearly you have not read my last paragraph.
But thank you for letting me there is a search feature, technology these days... Next thing u know there will be a global search engine for the whole Internet

clearly you didnt even bother to read the stickies. any of them.
AS a matter of fact i did, and found ways to flash a rom wiping all data from my phone, which is precisely what i don't want.
Now, i would thank those who actually came forward to answers to my questions instead of arguments that lead nowhere.
Thank you in advance.
The process in the first link is fine and works.
However to point out a few important things:
1) If your bootloader is locked you have to unlock it with: "fastboot unlock oem" and continuing with the instructions on the phone which will eventually delete all your data. (if you have flshed a ROM before you know that)
2) do install CWM recovery ( you can find instructions to do that everywhere and also on the same page you found for the 4.2) and do a Nandroid backup. This way you can go back to your original system anytime you want (I do this all the time)
3) keep also other backups of apps and contacts I find google cloud pretty handy for that.
4) The instructions mentioned on this site works but it might happen that some app or library or database is not happy with the update so the device will go in a boot loop. In this case delete dalvik-cache (it might help), but if it doesn't help you will need to delete the data or the part that causes the issue for this you might look into the logcat.
PS: Zepius, Pandas are not so cute actually ... so what's the best ROM / Kernel (stock it isn't

Thank you!
I have flashed many roms in my old phone using CMW. Surely i don't want to debrand my new phone, so unless the bootloader is unlocked, i guess i'll be looking forward for the yakjuxw updates.
Thank you once more!

I used to think the same way as you and i also had the same yakjuxw but the updates come too late for those versions so i decided to go yakju and i have no problems now
My advice is that you do it, if you read carefully it becomes dead easy and its worth it
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
As written(linked) in the article this is just the software fingerprint I can assure you will not have issues as the main software is the same. The only thing changed is who is providing the updates. Imagine windows you get with dell and hp PC they both have their logos (yakju/xw) but the windows is the same s*itty windows
I used tohave yakjuxw, changed to yakju, takju back to xw.. not im on yakju. This is my job indeed to test apps on diff android versions and i flash time quite often every day and i can assure you all works fine
Anyway if you need a ROM that tells you it is xw let me know Ill upload one for you

Just to let future googlers know that the solution to convert yakjuxw to yakju as seen on this site:
http://andwise.net/?p=569
has soft bricked my phone! I was able to flash a new ROM using Gnex toolkit but (of course) i did lose all my data!
BTW, with android 4.2.2 i'm noticing that wireless turns off after i lock the phone, is there a way round this or is it a new bug ?
4.2.1 Update
I've got a Galaxy Nexus with the yakjuxw build. Previously my phone's Android version was 4.1.1. Just this morning I got the 4.2.1 update! Fire away on the Check Now buttons guys.

Look around the WiFi settings, and the answer to the question in the OP is in this section's sticky, clearly you did not look hard enough, it's also in my signature if you want to take a look.(Jubakuba's Guide)
