[Q] 4.3 Games Black Screen - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

I really want to stick with a 4.3 ROM, but my kids use my phone quite a bit and some games never start and sit at a black screen.
Do you all think the games are not compatible with 4.3 or some other issue?

I've been having the exact same problem with 4.3 roms. In fact I've had that problem with all aosp roms now. I gave up on them because they just aren't as stable as tw roms. But hey, there's a new thread in the development section with a "STOCK" Touchwiz 4.3 rom, with options of root or no root. In case you do it but don't want to lose all the data with your apps, may I suggest an app called easebackup in the playstore, much simpler than titanium backup and much faster.

Pro's and Con's of custom roms

Can anybody provide some pro's and con's to using custom roms like LeeDroid etc.
I am not sure i want to use a custom rom or stick to a stock rom.
Pro: Speed (OCs, removed bloatware)
Customisability
A2SD
Root
Deodexed
Cool power menu
Cons: none, unless you can't get your phone's original RUU
IMO, if you're not sure you need a custom ROM, then you don't

that doesn't make any sense.
Custom ROM vs Stock ROM
It's a sensible theory: you don't need a custom rom if the stock rom provides everything you need. A further consideration to use a custom rom is more frequent updates and, perhaps important, faster updates to new Android versions (and 2.3 is comin' up).
I'm brand spanking new to Roms and Rooting. I was using DeFroST for the first few days. I found with it I was experiencing mms issues and Bluetooth connectivity issues. Moved over to CyanogenMod 6.0.2 and all my issues are now resolved. I have found that you should just experiment with new Roms (after making backups) and find one that suits you.

there is no way that a rooted phone has cons, only con is the risk of bricking while doing it... but even then, just do unrevoked and it should work fine.
pros:
-customize basically everything if you know what you're doing
-better battery life in some cases
-faster, smoother, depending on rom
-apps2sd+, all the free space on your phone as you want!
cons
- some roms dont have sense
- a lot of roms still have glitches with the camera... although the stock one isnt that great either.
- possibility of bricking if you're retarded during the unrevoking process.
I personally have rooted my device to get away from sense. I have found that the RaM is a lot less using a senseless Tom?

I'm also worried about getting custom roms because I.have heard cases about custom roms having force closes with google applications like Gmail and market and also wont work well with some of the games out there.
Is that true?

That can be the case in early releases of 'cutting edge' stuff - usually very quickly worked out though. As you can see in my sig, I'm running a ROM not even designed for my device. First couple of releases were a bit flaky, but this one is rock solid - as good a stock.
I see. What roms you using? I cant see your signature.
Reason for me saying that is because I see popular roms such as opendesire and etc still having problems with it. Like force closes and stuffs like that.

Well, if you can live with a little bit of Sense, then use LeeDroid. So far, my personal favorite. DeFrost was fast and quite stable for me, but the occasional force close wasn't too flattering either.
Okay so i loaded LeeDroid onto my phone. I am not really seeing much benefit over my stock eclair rom.
Nice to have a few new settings which i can customize. But otherwise, maybe i am not such a techie that i am finding any benefit??
I am picking up that the phone stalls between doing some tasks which is a con.

Work Phone

So work got me a phone and it's an E4GT
Since it's a work phone I don't want to load any custom roms or kernels... I've done it on the moment, epic4g, and galaxy tab 7+... but i'd rather not chance bricking it.
What stuff can I do that's awesome for the phone, but doesn't mess with the firmware?

change to a different Launcher. either ADW (for now since you are on GB) or phoenix launcher which is semi new but gives you a ICS style launcher for GB roms. that's honestly the first thing I would do.
Go stock rooted and use adblocker. Other than ads the phone is solid.

[Q]Is it worth it to upgrade to 4.2?

I already have the camera and clock apps as well as the keyboard running on a 4.1 ROM that i like. Is there any real reason i should upgrade?
You say you like your setup, so there is no reason to update right now if you are content.

lot of people are gettings SOD so stay away for awhile until Google fixes it.
4.1.2 roms are stable so use those if anything

Upgrade to 4.2.2 worth it?

Hey guys Ive been thinking lately of trying the new ota but I have a few questions/concerns.
Im on bugless beast 4.1.2 and couldn't be happier. Never an f/c, no stuttering, perfect stable setup. Will I find the same on a stock-like 4.2.2 rom? I tried some 4.2.1 roms but always walked away disastified (jittery crt animation, buggy, laggy). Any bugs on 4.2.2? Hows the speed over 4.1.2? I dont really care about the new toggles and lockscreen but if the speed is better and is stable id be interested.
Thanks!
No major changes. Believe me. Just update to be up to date. No other visible reasons.
All new versions run slower than previous. Custom kernels - we all know are just a placebo. Except kernel configuration possibility (for instance to slow down the phone to save the battery (which I doubt makes any sense) or turn on the fast charge).
So your phone won't be faster and your battery won't run longer.
If you want a decent standby and screen time (the default is - 12-16h and 2h screen time MAX!):
1. Disable Wifi
2. Disable Data
3. Switch to 2G
Everything else - waste of time
So 4.2.2 is slower than 4.1.2?

I've heard people say that it's smoother on their devices, but... the most reliable way to know would be to backup and flash it yourself. It seems that everyone's device is different, and everyone's choice of running apps is different as well. So only you would likely know if it is faster for you or not.

I was on 4.1.2 since December because 4.2.1 was junk.
4.2.2 runs great, they polished the quirks out and I don't feel the need to switch back. Google stock image, stock kernel.

[Q] What advantages to moving to either ICS or JB?

I have been running CM7 for a while and I am fairly happy with it. I seem to like the basic function over what I have see on other people's phones with either ICS or JB. So I want to ask what advantages or better functions would make me want to upgrade? Maybe better device support? I do notice that my wifi drops off a lot but I also have friend's with the SIII stock and they have the same issue.

ICS
>BETTER APP SUPPORT
>Face unlock
>Easier Folder management
>Better widget/app drawer
>Pinch-to-zoom functionality in the calendar
>Integrated screenshot capture
>Better voice integration and continuous, real-time speech to text dictation
>Better Contacts app
>Chrome syncing
>Built-in photo editor
>ANDROID BEAM!
>others....plus these are stock features. A custom rom will further improve things.
JB
>EVEN BETTER APP SUPPORT!!!
>BUTTERY SMOOTHNESS
>GOOGLE Now
>Expandable notifications
>Photosphere
>Gesture keyboard
>Lock screen widgets
These are just the main bullet points IMO there is no reason to stick with an old outdated OS. I used CM7 until ICS came out officially for our device. CM7 is based off GB which first came out in 2010! If you're wary of custom roms at least update officially and enjoy the most of android.
If your into flashing roms there are many stable ones running Google Now on ICS 4.0.4 if you are just looking for updated google apps. JB isn't officially out for out phones yet so the devs have done a good job of porting roms so we can use JB if you want to. I would check the threads on JB roms and decide which is best for you.
Thanks for help
Thanks for the insight. I am still on the fence but it is not like I can't revert after playing a bit, isn't that was a nand backup is for?

yeah. just make a backup and play around. If you are on cm7 i recommend upgrading to cm10.1, it only gets better.
