Smart cover/magnet sleep-wake function problem - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

So, it is about this smart cover function of the Nexus 7 2013. The one like from the Apple's iPad where covering up the screen locks the device automatically without the need to press the power button (and unlocking). That's possible because there is a hidden magnet in the device and also in the cover.
Now my problem: whenever I'm not at home, logically the Nexus disconnects from my Wi-Fi router. That's when the smart cover function works very badly. When I uncover the cover, it takes so long for the device to wake up by itself. Sometimes I can't wait and I am forced to press the power button. This annoys me.
But if I'm at home and the device is connected to the Wi-Fi router, the waking up is very fast. (Normal)
Anyone has this same problem? Is there a fix?

I've been having minor problems like this with my Nexus 7 (2013). I've only had it for about a week and until recently had yet to use it beyond the reach of my home wifi. The smart covers (Poetic/Moko) work very well at home but on a recent trip to NY and DC I couldn't get the Nexus turned on by opening the covers. No amount of time waiting would turn them on. I had to manually turn it on every time and considering the awkward button placement it got annoying fast. I even switch from the Poetic to the Moko and same problem. That along with other problems like the Nexus not registering presses, otg problems, and random system crashes are really souring me on the idea of owning nexus device. I've looked online as well but couldn't really find any solutions. I guess I still a week to return it but if you find a solution please post it here.

[Q] Remapping the Power button

My phone fell from my hand. And now the power button is not working. How to I remap it to the Search button? And will it be able to switch off/on the phone if it shuts down?

You cannot. it is hardwired to a pin, thats why you can force a reboot even if the phone locks up. You might be able to remap some functions, but not poweron/off and screen on. because when the screen is off the digitizer is in sleep mode so the search button wouldnt respond unless it was activated. Sorry to hear about you dropping the phone. Any warranty left?
No warranty
just another thought, sorry to hear about your phone. However, are you sure its the power button? since you dropped it, it might be caused by other hardware failure... you may need to consider the possibility as well..

depending on country/distributor some comes with only 1 year. Then again, i don't think they will entertain a claim caused by user... usually only covers factory defaults.
I bought mine from the US though i Live in India. So no warranty
this means... you have to use a pin to short the switch and boot it up everytime lol. Then enable wake using vol button to wake the phone haha.
How is it not working? Is it pressed below the unibody?
if so, I had the same issue, what i did was; remove the cover (first the battery, volume buttons and gps) and then while having the backcover in my hand, I took a small stump or something alike and pressed on the button from both sides, like 5 times each side.
Then put the thing together and it worked perfectly.
I've actually done this 3 times because I drop my phone very often xD
But if it don't work you should definitely get "Tap Tap App" which makes you unlock your phone with the proximity sensor located to the right of your speaker (the little black dot).
Hope it helps! Both solutions worked for me!
*Edit, oh yeah you can get a mod to use volume buttons to wake it up aswell, as the person above me mentioned ^^
Good luck!

[Q] Alternative to Power Button to turn screen on / off

It's been something that has bothered me ever since I bought my Galaxy Nexus. The existence of just one physical button to switch the screen on and off makes me question the lifetime of Power Button.
Does anyone know of any apps, mods, whatever for this? My first thought was to enable the Volume Keys to wake up the screen, I have also read about the proximity sensor but I don't think having the sensor active all the time is a good approach. Another way could be shaking the phone to turn it on.
Taken from a google search .... "There's an app called "No Lock" that will wake the Nexus One using the Volume rocker"
May work on the Galaxy Nexus too maybe but i dont know
Yea, I've seen that app too but it doens't do exactly what I want. Plus it disables entirely the lock screen which is certainly something I do not want. :\
look for smart screen on app, it enables you to turn your device on and off with the proximity sensor

Cm9 has volume rocker wake. It also has a notification toggle that turns off the screen.

Screen off & Lock works fine & cuts the wear & t4ear on the power button in half. I halve it set up as swipe action in Nova launcher.
AOKP had volume rocker wake in the ROM Control too.
Can try this app "Smart screen on"
it uses the proximity sensor to wake the phone..

He said he doesn't want to keep the proximity sensor on.
Have you tried "ShakeOff"? Turn the screen off/on with a shake. I haven't tested it on the GN but it used to work on my old phone.

Volume rocker. You have warranty anyway for a year.
Also, you do realize there's only one way to accelerate in a car right? Are you worried that the pedal won't work everyday so you'll need to find an alternative way to drive?

that's a nice analogy. now consider this:
car's are made to last, let's say, for 10 years.
smartphones and electronics/gadgets in general aren't.
not even going to mention the "years of expertise" behind the mechanics on a car.
thanks - everyone - for the replies I will try those!
I will say the power button on this phone is we made and I'm sure it will last just fine
I've had worse. Like my thunderbolt

AOKP can do what you request.
my power button on my GN stopped functioning after 6 months of use. It requires me to press in very hard to get a response now or none at all. I'm in the process of backing everything up and beginning the warranty process with expansys. Have to say, I considered this to be the best phone I've ever had and this just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
You could always try PGM Nexus (free). It allows you to unlock your phone by sliding your finger across the screen.

how so? I'm not one to nitpick small flaws, every phone has them. the power button failing is a major issue though. I would've still attributed it to a defective exception if I hadn't see many more people reporting the same thing. I did start using the volume rocker wake in cm9, but probably a bit too late

I have used this for a couple months and it works really great!
Even i worry a lot about the power button thingy. I use PGM nexus free version and it partially does the job. But for screen off i still have to use the power button.
Had a very bad experience with my moto milestone regarding the power button.

Headset buttons

Does anyone knows how to get the headset button working when device is locked?
For me it only works when the lockscreen is disabled.
Device: Galaxy Nexus with JB 4.1.1
I think it depends on the app. I have JB 4.1.1. I use a sony mw600 bluetooth headset. I also use Cyberon voice commader and doggcatcher. The buttons work on both apps when the screen is locked. But on other apps the buttons don't work on screen lock.
Button works just fine for me with my apps with screen locked. Google Music, BeyondPod, TuneIn Radio, and Pandora.
@NCguy:
Yes with bluetooth it works fine for me also. But the cable headset does not.
@martonikaj:
With some apps it seems to work.
What is not working for me (while locked):
* Long press for Google Now (Search)
* End a call
* Continue playing music when paused longer than 20 secs
* Commands assigned to a headset control app
If I disable the lockscreen all works fine without any problems. I use the default Samsung headset which came with the Nexus.
Any ideas?

If my phones been asleep paused for a long time, usually a double press works. Presumably the first press is waking the device and the 2nd is hitting "play".
I think a long press for Google Now search not working with the screen lock is by design... what use is a Google Now search when you can't see the screen?
Hanging up a call with the screen off/locked works for me too.

What do you do to hang up? It is not working for me... I tried one click or long press. No luck it does work when I unlock my screen. I am going crazy with that. That is the one and only reason why I miss my iPhone. No troubles there with the headset.
Do you also use the original headset from Samsung? If not could this be a reason why it does not work for me?
I've tried on the stock jb 4.1.1 and i'm running on cm 10 nightly.
Both works fine.
I can play/pause/forward/rewind the music and answer call even my phone is locked.

Hi
I have a Bose AE2i and I know the command cable is made for iDevices. Is it possible to have it fully/or bot working on the Gnex or is it material stuff.. ?

So what am I doing wrong? I tried it already with a different headset - also a Samsung stock one - also without luck.
Play/Pause works but as I said before only if the pause is not longer than 20 secs.
It makes me crazy...

Screen turns off when phone vibrates

Good evening, recently I was using my HTC one x and the screen suddenly turned off when I was typing, I turned it back on (no problem) but when I wanted to type my pass code to unlock the phone the screen turned off again. I noticed it did this every time the phone vibrated, and since the phone vibrates every time a key is pressed, the screen automatically turns off!!! I have tried restarting it but it has the same problem. I cannot access my phone at all since the pass code requires typing which vibrates the phone which in turn turns the screen off!!!!!
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Roham
Hardware problem I think haha...if your phone is unlocked flash another Rom or kernel...if still persists...yea....hardware problem lol

i think it was just a loose connection because I accidentally dropped the phone, and it bounced around for a little while and now its working perfectly fine! hhahahaa what are the chances!!

[Q] User issues with new Nexus 7 (2013) help please.

I purchased a new Nexus 7 (2013) a couple of weeks ago, and if I could return it, I would. I have a couple of user issues I just hate. I've been searching around for solutions, and I think there may be some, but I'm new to all of this, and I need some help and advise.
My first issue, and this is huge for me, is waking the tablet up. I primarily use the tablet to control my music server (Bubble DS Next). I'm frequently on the tablet while listening, but not always. The problem is that when the tablet sleeps, I have to use the power button to wake it up. I find the power button difficult to press, and it's just a pain. I have a Samsung S5 phone, and I love the physical home button for waking up the phone. I wish the Nexus 7 had the same button. I saw where someone was able to double tap the screen to wake up the Nexus 7. Is this part of some custom ROM? How could I get this feature?
My second issue relates to the on screen back, home, and apps buttons. I HATE that the home button is right below the space bar where I constantly seem to hit it while typing. I solved this issue while browsing the internet by using Dolphin as a browser in full screen mode. Is there a way to always hide these buttons unless you swipe up from the bottom?
I'm prepared to unlock and root the tablet, but I want to be certain I'm doing it for the right reasons. I'm not a power user of any kind, so other than wanting these 2 fixes, I'm fine with everything else about the tablet.
Thanks.

I decided since I can't return the thing, I might as well jump in and make it work better. I unlocked, rooted, TWRP'd, and flashed ElementalX ROM for Lollipop. I'm also using APEX Launcher mostly to get the tablet UI. At least I got the double tap to wake function now.
Thanks
