[Q] Any baseband (or other method) to boost signal reception? - Samsung Captivate Glide

Hello all Glide users:
To put it straight, my Glide is receiving worse signals and data connection is getting unstable. I usually use data connection in front of my desk. Back when I bought it (Sept. 13th) it had full bars of signal on the UCKL3 baseband at any position of the desk, and flashing to UCLJ3 didn't change this; however, the signal decreased over time, and data connection reliability and speed also fell. As of today, when I'm at my desk, Glide will show it's connected to 3G/H+ but won't receive data, hence I can't read or write posts. Signal is from one bar to zero. Worse, sometimes it simply disconnects me from everything and says "NO SERVICE". Right now I'm posting from my Galaxy Nexus ,which, although receiving just 1~2 bars of signals, sends and receives data swiftly.
I can verify that my other devices also experienced a signal drop, but they always had better reception than Glide - even in the clear outdoors, Glide would sometimes give me non-full signal, when other devices receive full bars.
I wonder whether the signal problem is because of the dorm structure itself or something wrong with my Glide? Or both? Have you guys had a good network when on a particular baseband? Or any suggestions? Thanks for your patience

Maybe try flashing various modems found in TheGreaterGood's LiteROM either 0.8.4 or 0.9.0.
Both those ROM's have an aroma installer which prompt you which modem you want to flash...

Do I have to flash the ROM just in order to get the modems? Are there Odin-flashable packages?

EDIT: I've downloaded KI3, LH2 and KL1 and extracted their modem.bin for flashing, only to find that they made no difference in signal reception, let alone network stability... Out of ideas

RUXKJ5 is best in terms of signal reception, but I think its the problem of CM10 / ICS itself, on GB the whole thing was better.

So you mean I can flash a Rogers i927R radio to an AT&T i927? And is GB radio fully compatible with ICS and upwards? I have my doubts...

I currently have that baseband on CM10.1 with no major problems, try flashing it yourself.
But, the described "no signal" happen anyway..

Phone dropping bars (Canada)

Phone is dropping bars like every hour or 2 its really annoying I'm with mobilicity and with ugkL1 baseband. Any recommendation what to do?

What do you mean by "dropping bars"? Phones gain and lose bars depending on signal strength. Unless you mean it's dropping right off the network?
Ya 0 bar and no service and it says like that for hour sometimes till I reboot

Are you a new customer to Mobilicity? If not, what phone did you use with Mobilicity?
Try putting a different SIM card with a different provider and see if the phone is still losing signal.
I too experienced this issue. I am on the TELUS network with a Galaxy Nexus (as of the 20th) and have noticed my data and signal would drop quite often. So I tried doing the System update to 4.0.2 and had the exact same problem with modem KL1. So at this point I tried flashing a Android Revolution ROM and that didn't fix it. Finally, I installed the AOSP Kang Project ROM with Baseband XXKK6 and now I have no problems at all. Data works as it should, and my signal stays in the green almost all day (except for when I'm at home, but that's because I live in a Basement Suite).
Give that a try!
I have the same issue.
And so does the people in this thread:

That's a lot of complaints on that site. Could this be a software issue or bad radio on Samsung's part?
Been thru two phones like this. First one was good for about a day then started playing up. After 3 days it wouldn't connect at all. Sent back for repair, still waiting to get it back but they claim it "should" be fixed with a new ROM - I tried all the available ROMs and radios at the time and none worked for me.
Got another GN while the first was being repaired, lasted 3 weeks and started doing the same thing. This one wasn't rooted, left untouched. It would connect in some places but would drop off the network enough to make the phone unreliable. Sent that one back as well, they're saying its a hardware issue with the internal antenna.
Both were different builds from different places too but the faults behaved the same. I'm waiting to get them both back, will be interesting to see if the software or hardware fix lasts longer... I have no doubt at least one of them will go back again!
Still hoping for a solution to this. Stock galaxy nexus on telus, brand new sim, had this happen. I could literally watch my service go from 5 bars to 0. Go dark grey. then go light grey and slowly creep back up and then go blue again. This process took 15 minutes sometimes. In Calgary, where there should be 0 signal issues.
I've since tried every baseband available, none seemed to solve this.
I've noticed the signal quality in general though is fairly weak. I work in Oil and Gas on remote locations. My coworker has a stock iPhone 4s. His phone consistently gets more bars than mine. I can't even send texts sometimes, and he'll be on the phone talking. I'm jealous.

[Q] Are Issues Resolved in 4.0.4 Update?

I've been interested in a Verizon GNEX [CDMA] since launch, but have held off purchase due to the following reported issues:
1) inability to call out or hold a call from areas where other phones can
2) inability to establish or hold a data connection from areas where other phones can
3) slow handoff from 4G to 3G to 1x
4) data connection remains in 1x or 3G in a strong 4G area until restart
5) poor battery life due to constant hunting for signal
6) random reboots
7) microphone cuts out during phone call
8) loud screeching sound during phone call
9) low speaker volume
10) ringtone volume not separate from notification volume
These issues have been reported to persist through multiple handset exchanges. From what I've read, the handoff issues (#3 and #4) appear to be resolved in the leaked 4.0.4 update and this has improved battery life (#5). Is this true?
For those of you who have experienced any of the above issues and installed the leaked 4.0.4 update, can you confirm these issues are resolved? Have any of the other issues you've experienced been resolved by this update?
I have a Galaxy Nexus GSM which was originally yakjuxw (if it matters), bought in Sweden in December 2011. Never had ANY of the issues you're mentioning. The only issue I had was that the phone got pretty hot, but with custom roms and especially Franco Kernel my phone is 10x better than stock in all aspects
Thanks, @Eddie!
I should've been more specific. As I understand it, the GNEX GSM is more robust than the GNEX CDMA.
I can confirm that 3,4 & 5 are fine in 4.0.4. I've not experienced either of your two 6s (you have two issue #6s in your first post) along with 7 either, however I don't use the phone much for voice calls.
I'll have the phone in Norcross GA next week which has poor Verizon coverage and will compare it with my DX to evaluate 1 & 2.
Thanks, @Sleuth! What a nice guy!
I live in an area that gets marginal 3G reception. The Nexus would be my first 4G phone. My concern is that it may not be able to function as a phone at my house if the radios have reception inferior to my present phone. That is the reason why I'm most interested if items #1 and #2 are resolved with the 4.0.4 update.

I'm also very interested if the microphone dropout during call (i.e. those you're speaking to can no longer hear you) and loud screechng noise during call (possibly feedback?) issues are resolved (items #7 and #8). Those definitely affect the phone conversation experience.

I don't have ANY of these issues on my present phone. To experience them on a new upgrade flagship phone that I'm paying a premium price for would be unacceptable.
There's no need to wait or hope. The 4.0.4 update is already out, available for installation for those who root and ROM their phones (as I would do if I had these issues). That's why I posted this question in this forum.
My only question is simple - are these issues resolved or not?
I just picked up the LTE G Nex (I've owned the GSM version for a few months) and must admit that the reception on it is noticeably worse than my old Verizon LTE phones (Thunderbolt and Droid Charge). I am on the deodexed version of 4.0.4.
So far, my coverage in Norcross GA has been identical in terms of signal strength. They must've just added LTE to the existing towers. However, I am getting 4G coverage here so I'm getting much better data throughput than I ever had. Not too many people here using the 4G service yet so the spectrum is pretty much open.
I'll be here a few more days and will get more opportunity to compare. I'd like to see a 3G handoff happen...
Slightly OT, but the GNex GPS hardware is way superior to the DX. I actually got a lock inside the Avis parking structure

Actually its the same. The Nexus uses almost the same exact radio chip set. Reason you think signal is worse is because the Droid Charge displayed signal bars based off of your 3g coverage, not lte.Put your nexus into 3g mode and I can almost guarantee you your signal bars will go back up to a comparable level of your charge

Android prior to 4.0/ICS was not able to separately display 4G/LTE signal bars in the notification area. LTE phones on Android 2.x are actually showing you their 3G signal strength even when you are on 4G.
The Galaxy Nexus and Droid Charge use virtually identical LTE and EV-DO radios. Any signal differences between the two would be very minor and a result of antenna design at most.

Yeah, I remember reading that. But I thought that Verizon/Google was going to change how the Nexus displays signal strength to match other LTE phones like the Droid Charge, though. I'm on 4.0.4.

So in that case is safe to say Verizon's LTE is to blame here. Has anyone done a speed test side by side. If we get the same results well there's your answer and if we don't we know who to blame.

Just got a microSIM adapter so I decided to test this out. I did Speedtests in the exact same location in my house and swapped the microSIM from my G Nex into both my Droid Charge and Thunderbolt. Speedtest numbers in the same locations were faster with my older LTE phones (around 6-7 up and 2.5 down) vs. my G Nex (around 4 up and 2 down). Also, I had to toggle my GNex's network mode to get it to 4G because it initially was only on 3G in this location. This poor reception is frankly the only thing I dislike about my LTE G Nex.

I believe that is the key. From what I've read, the GNEX works great in strong 4G areas. I don't believe my home location will be so fortunate.

Phone dropping signal all every 15mins

I had that problem with losing signal every 15 minutes when I first got my phone. I reflashed the XXKK6 radio in recovery and it fixed it. I'm not sure why that fixed the problem, as that was the same radio I had on my phone, but it work. There is a thread in Development I think that has all the radios in a recovery flashable friendly format.
As far as switching from 3G to H, that is pretty annoying, but I think it's more of a network thing. Most Android phones will just show an H or 4G whether it's in UMTS or HSPA, so you don't see the change. The Nexus shows what you are actually on.

That´s the only big issue with my GN and it´s rly annoying.
How is it possible, if I have full signal at home (same place) and after some minutes it drop to 1 bar or 0? Something switch of or what ever.
when it drops signal does it still show signal strength? or bars up there?
i was having the same issue where it would drop data, but it showed the bars there. What i did to resolve it was up the min cpu to 700mhz in setcpu and it resolved my issue, i no longer have data drops.

I would try flashing a new radio and if that does not work I'd return the phone for another one. That isn't normal behavior.

Had the same problem on roman's rom, at times it was way more frequent and would dump wifi as well; which was understandably unacceptable due to my use of native voip/sip.
Went back to a CM9 nightly after the experiment yesterday of build 27 and everything is better.
iirc, was on kk6.
I am on AOKP build 27 and just started to see my data randomly stop working but my bars still show and so does my 4G icon. You would also see the data arrows working. I was on 4.0.2 radio and upgrade to 4.0.4 radio to see if that would fix it but didn't seem to.
So has anyone had this happen to them and do they think it was Rom related? My 4G signal sticks so I do not have an issue of signal dropping. When this happens only a reboot gets my actual data back. It is like the Epic Touch 4G LOS issue we had but it still shows data instead of giving you the zero with the line in it.
This has been happening to me on AOKP 27 as well. I've never had this problem before on any other AOKP rom. Hmm, think I might flash another modem then flash back to KK6 to see if it helps.

Did you your phone come with the XXKK1 radio or did you flash it?
If it's the stock radio, then it means your GNEX was imported from Europe.
I had a European GNEX with problems just like you described. I tried flashing all radios available here in the forums but it did not solve the problem, my google voice mailbox would get a lot of messages due to my phone being out of reach. Long story short, I lost that phone in an unfortunate event. I bought another GNEX, this time a Canadian import one. It came with UGKL1 radio out of the box and never flashed any other radios because it's been working flawlessly in terms of signal strength.
I'm not saying it's a generic problem. But that is what I experienced.
I suggest you try flashing a north-american baseband, one that starts with UG and hope your case is different than mine.

Anyone fix this? Mine will just stop having a data connection. It says that it has one and the bars act as if they are working but it will not download anything. Sometimes I have to reset and other times I can just put it airplane mode and turn it back on and it works. I have actually tried all of the radios so far including the newest one with 4.0.4.
Extremely irritating. As far as I know, this happens because it is asleep, because I don't remember it happening while I was using it.

droppping from 3g to 1x

for some reason after i flash a rom i will only get 1x and i have to go back to a stock rom to get 3g back. has anyone else had this problem?
Check your prls and modems
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
i have updated the prls and i was on the latest modem and it was still doing it. then i tried downgrading to LF9 modem with no change. im on the LG2 build.
Which ROM? On Cm10 early builds I only showed 1x but if doing speed tests and looking at dbm signal output I was still getting 3g speeds.
i first tried it on blazer ROM 1.5 then i seen there was an update so i tried 1.6 but got the same thing
i have also just tried it with Team VeNuM's blue themed rom and i have the same outcome
What kind of real speeds are you getting when you speed test? It's entirely possible that you truly only have 1x speeds in your area. Sprint has "strongly encouraged" Samsung and HTC to always show 3G in areas where there is supposedly 3G. Most custom ROMs have corrected this by showing actual speeds in their ROMs. So it could also be that you truly are only getting 1x and the stock ROM is falsely reporting 3G.
ok well now that im home (i was away on vacation in the Poconos) i ran a speed test and got decent numbers this is the results of 3 tests i ran /ping- 92, 77, 76 /download kB/s- 214.6, 236.8, 152.5 /upload kB/s- 78.3, 77.8, 101.6. so i backed up, flashed Team VeNuM's rom and wiped cache but when the phone booted it showed 3g so maybe b/c i was in PA it might have been saying i was in 3g when i really wasnt proving what you were saying jdogg836. so heres the results of the speed test /ping- 121, 134, 206 /download kB/s- 89.1, 67, 64.4 /upload kB/s- 61.1, 28, 58.6 it's showing much slower speeds but im not sure why

Check to see if the time you flashed has the 1x/3g mod... stock Roms only ever show 3g even when they are on 1x..
You can also go into the market and download netmonitor which will tell you your true network type.
I'm almost willing to bet that's the problem.
I too live in pa and most northern parts only have 1x service.. just so you know.
Harrisburg/reading/Lebanon is where you start getting 3g.
Edit. Most of what I said was already explained. Didn't see jdoggs post.

Personally I've has this problem since day 1 with this phone. On Airave it seems worse than being connected to towers for me. Sometimes mine goes from 3g to 1x to no data. Turning mobile data off and on usually fixes the issue. I've tried all radios, no difference, LG8 seems to keep connection longer.

Personally I've has this problem since day 1 with this phone. On Airave it seems worse than being connected to towers for me. Sometimes mine goes from 3g to 1x to no data. If you have the original airave it only has 1x.
The newer version the airvana has 3g coverage..

I've had newer one since the day it came out, no problems with any other phone I've had, just s3. I believe the problem to be the phone, sprint, or my isp.
this message brought to you by my GalaxyS3
I have had modem issues since day one too, I got a new phone because of the poor signal and it's the same.
I tried all the radios this weekend and found no real gains with any. I saw the 1x indicator with the CM10 7/29 build and the AOKP ROM.
Stock based ROM all showed 3G, but it would make sense if they are lying, although I would see 1x in distant lands on my EVO.
I will try the speed test.
It's also worth noting that I have a friend with a stock HTC X one getting about the same signal as me, so it may well be that sprint is messed up here.

I'm not sure at this point, tried everything under the sun, just today I got into the Airvana management page and set it to my router's reserved IP for my Airvana. I think its Sprint also, but you know when I'm right under the Airvana, it seems my s3 keeps solid data connection. This could very well be a weak radio in the S3. All I know is I never had this issue with any previous phones. Maybe 1 day someone will figure this out as Sprint Airave techs are worthless, I feel like I know more than they do!
My problem is even worse since I rooted and flashed AOKP. Hopefully someone can help here. I can make phone calls, it shows 1x, but I don't have a data connection...
Wondering if it is my area. I haven't had issues before. Maybe I should call Sprint to see if they are messing with the towers.
UPDATE: Fixed by flashing stock rom and using the ##72786# in the phone keypad thankfully.

[Q] Mobilicity/WIND Galaxy Nexus 4.2

Hi I did a root/flash for a friends Samsung Galaxy Nexus using >http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2124838< the newest revision on their homepage and everything went perfect. now I personally have a Optimus G2X WIND (2X) and I tried Domination's ROM but it was not updated anymore and crashed way to much so I am using Paranoid Android ICS hoping the JB gets updated to be more stable but no expectations. anyways I always ALWAYS get a HSDPA signal quality in all my ICS builds even in my JB build tests I have tried and never dropped down to 3G even in my Gingerbread builds CM7 I never had any lower signal than 4G but it seems that his Phone constantly drops from H to 3G and pretty much stays on 3G... is it a Kernal or Baseband update fix? What do?
I'm downtown Toronto on wind. Never really had a problem with data until I got the nexus. Almost always on 3g
I think its a wind+nexus thing

that's like my issue with my Optimus G2x I can't send or receive pictures yet they claim that the service supports it. but I read somewhere that most android devices can't do data+mms at the same time and that's why it fails
On Wind in Edmonton here.
My phone seems to stay on 3G most of the time, but almost always bumps up to H+ whenever I use data. I think it has something to do with saving the battery. I can't remember if it does that on the stock rom, though, as I haven't used that since I got the phone.
I have never tried MMS+data. so I can't help you out there.
