Is anyone else having trouble establishing a connection to a PPTP VPN over T-Mobile's network? Whenever I try to connect to my home VPN, the initial request is received by my wireless router (which hosts the VPN, router is an Asus RT-N53), but the connection hangs until it times out on my phone (displays connecting for some time and then disconnected). However, when I tried connecting to my VPN over multiple different wifi networks, it worked perfectly every time, leading me to believe it's a problem with T-Mobile's network. From what I've researched so far, there's conflicting reports whether T-Mobile blocks VPN connections or not. How can I fix this issue? Thanks.
Here's the log from my router:

Create a new apn keeping everything similar to the tmobile one, or if you can edit it. Under APN Type, add admin after supl, Under APN Protocol change it from IPV6 to IPv4/IPV6

T-Mobile VPN access changes with Android 6.x Marshmallow?
Apologies for reviving an old thread, but since upgrading to Android 6.x Marshmallow, I can no longer connect to my PPTP VPN over T-Mobile 4G using this technique (establishing a separate APN with IPv6 disabled). Are others able to confirm this behavior with Marshmallow? [EDIT: Or any Android version. It appears the timing of T-Mobile network changes and Android Marshmallow rollout were coincidental and this behavior is likely not tied to Android specifically.]
I used this method successfully on the same device with previous Android versions. I verified IPv6 is still disabled. Same VPN setup as in the past and I'm still able to connect to the VPN over wi-fi networks, just not T-Mobile 4G, so it points to a networking issue rather than software.
[FWIW I'm not using a Galaxy Note 3, but this topic is likely device-independent.]

Hi imit8,
Since my phone was upgraded to Android 6.x Marshmallow, I've been experiencing the same issue. I'm able to successfully connect to PPTP VPN using wifi, but not able to connect when using T-Mobile network. Please let me know if you make any progress.

I can confirm, not on phone, not on pc's over a dedicated T-mobile hotspot, it would appear t-mobile is blocking a port or something
Probably has nothing to do with marshmallow. I'm using a mobile hotspot + laptop and I can't vpn either. My VPN server log indicates port 47 being blocked.
I can confirm as well. Not a marshmallow issue. It's a T-Mobile issue.
I'm on Lollipop and just noticed that I can no longer connect to my home openvpn server on lte. On wi-fi it works with no issues. Same profile used to work on lte connection up until recently (I last tried it a few weeks ago I believe).
UPDATE: I did some research and more testing.
There were reports that IPv6 that is now used by T-Mobile could be the culprit. I changed my APN to IPv4, still not working.
The only way it worked is if I used TCP.
So basically, T-Mobile is doing something with the udp ports.
Could this be related to the Binge On fiasco? Because they monitor udp data for video and do their "optimization" *cough *throttling
I suspect that is the reason why openvpn through udp no longer works. Can anyone more knowledgeable chime in?
Thanks
PS. I have Binge On turned off since day 1 (on unlimited plan)

Does anybody tryed VPN client for HTC3300, supporting Windows Mobile 5.0 and Nortel Contivity switch?
I have tried several solutions, incl. Bluefire VPN, AnthaVPN, ApaniVPN, NCP client - but could not get satisfactory result - some of them doesn't work at all, some of them couldn't establish connection or run on Windows Mobile 2003
Some experience with Bluefire VPN:
I have installed trial, it works on WiFi connection, but doesn't work on cellular (GSM/GPRS). An error -56 appears (no physical connection is present) although device connects to GPRS successfully and I could browse Internet
Could anybody advice?
Pavel
My experience
I had to set up such a connection to my company VPN. Ok, I wasn't working on HTC p3300 but I was in the same condition for days. At last, I discovered that the provider was masking off the VPN frames. I had to buy another service and I had to connect to another "access point". (I don't remember how it is called exactly in GPRS). From then on I could either navigate internet or use vpn, but they are mutually exclusive for the provider policy. "we did it for security purposes..." they said. The problem is that one technician on 100 knows it. The compant was Vodafone ITALY. So I suggest you have a check with your provider. Maybe there's nothing wrong in your configuration.
Bluefire VPN is currently not compatible with WM5 AKU3. It works on devices wiht AKU2 and below. This has something to do with the way AKU3 names the GPRS data connection. It is different than previous versions.
Bluefire is aware of the issue and said they will have this corrected in the next release, due anytime now. I am running a pre-release build that the sent me and can confirm that it works with GPRS. The problem is this build breaks wifi on the device.
Wifi network security support:
My TMobile TocuhPro2 doesn't seem to support the TTLS security protocol. In the '802.1x' tab in the wireless network config window, I can only select 'PEAP' or 'smart card or certificate'. Are there any 3rd party authentication clients/apps available to resolve this?
At my work place, I need to use 802.1x WEP with EAP-TTLS authentication protocol using PAP to connect to the wireless network.
Thanks.
Eduroam?
This sounds like eduroam. You need the securew2 client for this. it is free for educational/non-commercial use.l
yes, I installed securew2 few days back. It works just fine.
i'm try to download the free version for educational/non-commercial use...but always redirections to payments...other option it's test the 30-day evaluation... They changed their policy.
First of all I apologize if there is any similar forum related to this topic because I couldn't find any. If you do, please forgive me.
This recent 2 months, I noticed that T-Mobile has been throttling VPN connection speed. When first time I used VPN, I used hotspot shield, viatun and nvpn.net. All of these VPN gave me very good speed on T-Mobile network. Now, I only barely get 2 Mbps on hotspot shield and viatun even though I am in LTE network.
For nvpn.net, it uses openvpn client so I can connect from PC or from my GN II. If I am connect my GN II through wifi and use nvpn.net, I will get the speed about 13 Mbps which my home internet wifi is 15 Mbps. However, if I am in T-Mobile network although in LTE network (Normal speed 18 Mbps), the speed is only limited to 7 Mbps.
I am just wondering if T-Mobile is throttling vpn connection and also happening on you guys.
Thank you very much
VPN config.
Hopefully I am not threadjacking here ... But,
I am interested in how you configured your VPN since I am researching how to set up my GN II as a VPN server so I can use it as a hotspot for my laptop. Questions I have:
I am assuming that my IP address is going to be my VPN servers address? either that or do I need to register a domain server to set up a VPN?
Any feedback you have would help and again sorry I couldn't answer your question as to T-Mobiles Throttling. Hopefully this isn't a trend and the only thing I could think of of would be to switch VPN software?
Again I am new to VPN but from what I understand you can use different SW to encrypt your tunnel. Thanks again and sorry if this seems off topic.
I normally avoid creating threads because the answer is usually out there, but I've been beating my head against a wall for weeks now and I'm at my wits end.
I have a HTC 10 on Unofficial LineageOS 16 which I upgraded from 14.1. Also running Magisk.
On 14.1, my tethering worked great. Same exact hardware, carrier, plan, SIM and everything only the upgrade to LOS 16, and now my tethering doesn't work.
I thought it was unique to my phone, but I realized my wife's Pixel on Official LineageOS 16 is doing the exact same thing.
The Wi-Fi Hotspot enables, and other devices can connect, but the connection shows no internet.
I've tried with other Android phones, tablets, windows and Ubuntu laptops... All with the same issue...
If I ping any website by domain name (eg google.com) the IP will resolve (so DNS seems to be OK) but there's never any response.
I can successfully ping the gateway (phone's) IP address though.
So far I've tried all the following (also several in combination) with no success:
- setting manual IP, gateway, mask and DNS from the client device (DNS of 8.8.8.8)
- Different bands (2.4 vs 5)
- WPA or unsecured
- Tethering via USB or Bluetooth instead of Wi-Fi
- changing the APN to include DUN in all caps
- toggling tethering hardware acceleration in developer tools
- settings put global tether_dun_required 0
- set TTL to 64
- editing build.prop with net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
- messing around with route tables some
- resetting all network settings (lost my saved wifi networks for no reason)
- tethering_enabler Magisk package
- probably more stuff I'm forgetting right now...
So far nothing has worked.
It's very frustrating to lose all ability to tether, it was something I used quite often and sometimes need for work.
Does anyone have any ideas at all?
Same problem

Hi!
I have exactly the same problem with LineageOS 17.1 on Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus! I had MIUI 10 installed before and everything worked fine, but with LineageOS my thetering doesn't work. Not over Wifi nor USB...
As you described I can connect other devices with the wifi from my phone, but they don't have internet access then. I can ping to external sites successfully but I'm not able to connect to any webside or any other internet service... Have you found any solution for this problem or does anyone know something about? I'm searching also now for a very long time but with no success...
Thanks in advance,
Drotak
I think straight talk was blocking it. I'm not sure if their way of blocking only worked for newer versions of Android or what.
Since this post, I've changed phones to a Google edition Pixel 2, which I unlocked but continued to run stock ROM with Magisk. I never could get tethering working on it, tried all the same things. The only thing that worked (kinda) was setting up VPN tethering, but it was very difficult and unreliable.
Finally I just gave in and bought the plan that includes tethering. Nothing I like more than buying data and then being told how to use it unless I pay more (sic)
Hi,
I received my MiA2 lite last week, with Android Pie and September security patch.
I tried to use the hotspot yesterday for the first time, and I was not able to use internet from my laptop.
Apparently my laptop (Windows 7) connects to the hotspot, and in the wirelesse connections tab windos also says "internet access", but when I try to open google chrome and browse, the connection is just not working... never had any problems with my old mobile (redmi 4). I am using the same sim card and same laptop.
Anyone can help, please?

Hello;
the ootspot only works if the related data sim is located on slot No. 1
The sim is in slot No.1.
It is weird... the computer gets connected to the hotspot, windows also says "internet access", but when I try to browse to any website, the connection just is not working (google gets stuck with "estabilishing a secure connection", or something similar)
FWIW I've never got hotspot to work. I use the Bluetooth network when I need to connect my laptop.
Possibly the sim slots are misnumbered? I believe they swapped when I upgraded from Oreo to pie...
If computers can connect to the hotspot but cannot reach any webpage, most of the time this is due to DNS server not responding (your carrier could be blocking tethering connections...)
You should try to set your computer connection to use manual DNS instead of automatic carrier DNS : OpenDNS Windows 7 Configuration
This link is for OpenDNS but you can use any other dns provider (Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1 - Google: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4)
Let us know if this works
Is your data plan restricted you from sharing data with the hotspot?
Because my data plan is unlimited quota and I cannot access internet with laptop using mobile hotspot.
No problems with hotspot using this device, connecting another phones and laptops, providing that I've registered to available mobile prepaid internet plans/top-ups. Sounds like your carrier issue with internet plans / hotspots.
Still not working... Windows network center says I have connection to internet, but obviously I have not... I cannot even ping Google.com
I was able to use the hotspot with my previous phone... My network provider allows tethering
Did you try with custom DNS server ?
Did you try to ping an IP address instead of a domain name ?
Tethering traffic can be marked, allowing carrier DNS to filter it, but not all phones comply with this rule...
