You cannot use ODIN to BACKUP anything, ODIN is used for flashing firmware/modem/kernels/bootloaders.
The only thing you can do if you cannot use your screen at all is to turn on the phone and connect
USB cable from phone to computer and then copy files/folders from phone to your computer.
You need to install the samsung usb drivers in your computer for this process to work.
(most likely you already have the samsung usb drivers installed).
Good luck!

correction
Well.. although it's true ODIN is for flashing only, the rest of your answer is at best not complete... it is possible to create your own ODIN images.
It all depends on wheter OP had USB debugging enabled and is rooted already, if this is the case you can just enter a shell from your computer by using 'adb shell', the next thing would be to dump your partitions to images by using 'dd' and 'adb pull' to download them and finally using tar and md5sum to pack these dumps to an ODIN flashable tar.md5
Look here for a guide:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082288 ... do NOT just copy/paste, your blocks will most likely have different addresses (Google is your friend here, I recommended doing some more research first)

First thing to try is to boot into cwm and do a factory reset and reboot the phone that should fix the ex sdcard issue.
If that don't work the only other thing to do is to do an ODIN flash TAR file of the stock-pre-rooted 4.1.2 T999
Tmobile Jellybean rom and from there using rom manager you will be able to restore your backup
or flash any other cwm flashable zipfile.
good luck!
Anyone have a link to the TAR file of the stock-pre-rooted 4.1.2 T999?

YES PDA but unzip the rooted rom first, copy it into an empty folder and copy odin into the same folder.
Best thing to do is to close odin and open it again to be sure that it's in default settings mode.
Only use the PDA option to get the tar file into it.
Do not change any of the settings in odin, leave it default and be sure that the [COM:XX] lights up
after you get the phone into download mode and plug in the usb cable to the computer and your phone.
Once it lights up then start the flash. Have patience after it's done it will take it 5-10 minutes to fully reboot after the flash.
This guide will get your phone back up and running properly
Easy and sure way fix your problem - Here is s step by step guide:
Download the newest pre-rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 T999 Jellybean v4.1.2 rom: T999_UVDMD5
After downloading make a folder on your computer's desktop and unzip the
file using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file
Here is the link for Odin: http://d-h.st/Q14
Download ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware (a windows app)
Download the Odin Flash firmware for T999 Tmobile then copy it to the same folder as Odin
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the same folder as the TAR file you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up, then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the Firmware you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache!
(It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)
Good Luck!

Do you remember what (stock) firmware or Android version you were on before the attempted installation? Your best option now would be a return to stock. If you were on anything earlier than 4.3 (e.g. 4.1.2 or 4.1.1) you could try using Odin to flash 4.1.1 since you can get into download mode. To do this take the following steps ..
1. Download the required files via the following link <http://fortedge.com/downgrade.html>and extract the Odin flashable file
2. Install Odin
3. Boot into download mode and flash via Odin
OR you could find the correct stock image via the following discussion thread and flash via Odin. This would be a complete stock file that will flash all partitions including bootloader, modem, kernel and system.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
If you were on Android 4.3, then you cannot use the above method or flash via Odin and any attempt to do this will create more bother for you. In this case, you would need to flash custom recovery via Odin and restore the stock recovery image via custom recovery. Please download the stock recovery file via the following the thread ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2658486
If you need any further detailed steps on how to complete this, please do not hesitate to holler.

Download Odin.
http://fortedge.com/downloads/Odin307.zip
Download the Odin flashable custom recovery file via the following link ...
<http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/d2att>. You need one of the more recent images ending in *.tar e.g. the one below
<http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.6.3.0-d2att.tar>
Install Samsung Kies on your PC if you don't have this already (this will be useful for the drivers)
Install the twrp tar file to an easily remembered location on your PC
Extract the Odin zip to get the executable file (*.exe)
Click on the exe file to run Odin
Now boot your phone into download mode by powering off completely then holding down the Power + Home + Volume Down buttons simultaneously until you see a warning message.
Press the Volume Up button to continue
Connect your phone to the computer with a good quality micro-USB cable
If everything has been done OK, Odin should immediately recognize your phone and you should see a message saying "Added" in Odin. If you don't see this, then you may need to check the drivers are properly installed.
Click on the PDA tab in Odin and navigate to the twrp tar file you earlier downloaded. Select this file and click OK.
You should have the Auto-Reboot and F-Reset Time boxes checked in Odin. Please do not check or uncheck any other boxes!
Click on the Start button at the bottom to start flashing TWRP and wait until you see PASS and a green (or blue) box fully displayed. Your phone will automatically reboot after this although it may not be able to boot since you don't have an OS installed. You may disconnect the cable and close Odin after you see the PASS message. If you see FAIL, then disconnect, remove the phone battery and try again.
If you successfully flash TWRP, then you may proceed to reinstalling your ROM.
1. Download the zip file in the thread below <<http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486>>
2. Save to a recognizable location on your phone's SD card. If you can't install files to your phone via your PC, then you may save to a micro SDHC card using another micro-SDHC compatible device (camera, another phone, card reader/writer etc).
3. Boot into recovery mode
4. Select Install from the TWRP menu and navigate to the zip file you download. Swipe the arrow key to confirm installation and wait for installation to be complete
5. When installation is complete, clear your cache and dalvik and reboot system and you are good to go.
Hope this works for you. If it does, please remember to hit the thanks button and let me know.

You may also try Odin 3 v1.85 if the v 3.07 didn't work. I've been looking for a safe download link for that online but I've not been able to find one. You may try searching for it online.

Or you could try putting a room on an SD card. That's why I always check to see if a room is there before flashing

[Q] Android Device Manager, Locked out! Can I retrieve my photos?

Hi there and thanks for coming to take a look at my thread.
I'm writing today to ask for some advice regarding my mother's Galaxy S4 Mini. After coming back home today she had misplaced her phone & we couldn't find it anywhere in the house initially. So I panicked a little and logged into her Google account from the web and locked her phone because she was out earlier using it. I then started ringing it.
After a while we found the phone, and I entered the password that I had set from the Android Device Manager... it keeps saying the password is incorrect. I've now changed the password on Android Device Manager again to a different password, and it isn't accepting that either.
I've now come to my PC and plugged it in, but the files aren't showing in the Windows Explorer window because the phone is locked. I'm quite upset because we've got great photos on the phone of our family.
My question: Is there any way I can retrieve the photos from the phone while it is locked before I factory reset the device? The phone is stock everything and does not have root, custom recovery etc.

Thanks for your reply.
I've had a look around here and have found Odin and TWRP on these forums. I use a Nexus 5 personally and have never used Odin before. Is Odin the same to use for any Samsung phone or is there a guide that I can follow specifically for the Galaxy S4 Mini to install TWRP?
Also.. will Odin work even if USB debugging is switched off (bear in mind I can not switch it on due to the phone being locked out)?
Use Odin 3.07, turn off phone, open download mode (vol-, center and power), connect phone to pc, open Odin and choose recovery file in PDA and hit start.

Many thanks. All of the photos are now on my PC again! Many memories recovered!
If anyone gets into a similar situation, here's what I ended up doing:
1) Downloaded Odin 3.09 as recommended by OliverG96.
2) Flashed TWRP 2.7.1.0.
3) Installed ADB drivers while the phone is booted into TWRP.
4) Used the adb pull command to retrieve the photos to a location on my PC.
Good to hear that. For me differences between Odin 3.07 and 3.09 are only cosmetics but I prefer 3.07 cause section names are like in older versions. You could also just copy whole DCIM folder to SDCard using built-in file manager in TWRP but after all result is the same.

Fair enough. I did download both versions just to compare the difference and I see what you mean.
Now, to factory reset the stock firmware, would it be safe to do it from TWRP?
Sure.
hi may i just hi-jack this thread cuz i have a smilar problem.. my sister broke her s4 mini screen+digitalizer.. and she has some photos on the internal SD.. is it possible to get those files without the screen and digitalizer?
Only way is to connect to pc and prey that it will be detected as MTP.
Edit:
Oh, also You can put phone in download mode by Vol-, Center and Power and after few seconds push Vol+ and flash TWRP. After that You can boot to recovery by pushing Vol+, Center and Power and in TWRP phone should be detected as ADB so You can use adb pull command to copy photos from DCIM folder or If You will have luck phone will be detected as MTP.

GT-P5210 - Need advice on rooting without Odin or Heimdall

Could anyone point me to some docs on how to root without using Odin or Heimdall?
I don't have access to a Windows machine, so Odin is out.
Heimdall has a known bug that I'm hitting and there is no workaround or update, so that's out.
So, is there a way to do this without those tools? I can use adb and see the device no problem, access the shell and everything. I have an SD ready to go, but I'm not having any luck. With the SD, I tried installing various tools via the recovery mode, Root-P5210-P5200.zip, UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.02.zip, UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.64.zip... It seemed to unpack the zip file, install, then reboot itself, but none were successful.
Can I use adb to flash any of these images that normally say you need Odin, or are those proprietary images that can only be used by Odin?
Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!

FRP G925T

Hallo, I have a G925T lock in download mode with message: "An error has occured while updating the device software. Use the emergency recovery function in the smart swich pc software"
But is lock with FRP and not is possible to install a recovery.
It is theoretically possible to install an original firmware with odin but the ones I tried do not work.
Can anyone help me?
I need help with this too … anyone!!
Quick resolution... flash the combination firmware in Odin which will boot you into factory binary mode and
Allow you to turn on USB debugging and then you use a few different methods to bypass.. what I personally did was took my rom and unzipped it on my PC went into the system/app and privapp folders and deleted secsetupwizard from each folder. Then simply rezip the rom using win zip. Next root your device using the root package in my rom thread and once booted into twrp connect phone to PC and move the rom to your phone and flash. Then when it boots it totally bypasses setup wizard and then go into settings and factory reset. Then you can update phone to latest firmware. I'm sure the other ways might be easier but this is just the method I chose.

please correct me if im wrong, but don't you need to get past the FRP to turn on USB debugging? like I flashed that latest stock ROM (7.0 FRC1) from Sam and it boots to the google account screen and I dont see any way to turn on USB debugging.
what im i missing here?
