Hi,
I got my G3 and noticed that there are some pre installed apps I can't remove (especially McAfee!). Therefore, I want to root my device in order to be able to unistall these apps. I am new at rooting, so my questions are
-How can I get updates on a rooted device? Is OTA possible or do I need to install updates via a pc tool?
-If OTA is not possible, where can I find the updates and how can I install them?
-Does LG update app inform me about updates on a rooted device or do I have to check manually on web?
-Are there any reasons why I shouldn't root my G3?

1. i have read ota with rooted device is possible (only without twrp!) but with lg flash tool its safer.
2. for example here... you can install them with lg flash tool.
3. if you do not turn off the ota update information you will be informed about updates but i recommend you to turn it off.
4. i think no.
I don't have experience with LG, but with other phones I've had OTA's will work on rooted device ONLY if you have stock recovery and ALL pre-installed apps, including bloatware. So if you delete McAfee, OTA's probably won't run. If you use TiBackup to freeze it, instead of deleting it, there's a good chance the OTA will run.
But I think it's probably safer to not take OTAs, if for no other reason than the next OTA could break root, and then you'd be stuck with McAfee.
Question, though: can you disable McAfee in the Application manager? If so, you would't have to root if that's your only reason.

@dusu84 I was not able to disable mcafee in app manager. I used Titanium Backup to freeze it.

you dont have to remove root before using lg flash tool... you will lost root anyway when you use lg flash tool.
you can choose between two flash variants... "cse" or "normal".
cse will wipe everything on your phone... normal keep your apps and data exist but you will lost root.
I would like to install a custom rom but I am wondering if any of the unlock methods work after installing the latest ATT OTA update (which was forced to my phone) D85010f. If so could you pleas provide a link/steps? I'm tech savvy but a recent iPhone convert so this is new to me. Thanks!
You will have to downgrade and then root it.

Stump Root in Brute Force mode works on 10f. From there you can Bump unlock it and install the bumped TWRP recovery.

I have just received a replacement LG G3 D855 after cracking the screen on my original. I used SuperSU to root my device to uninstall a load of bloatware system apps. I then tried to unroot my phone because a) Sky Go doesn't work on rooted devices and b) I wanted to update to Lollipop officially as I had done on my old device. I am also unable to reroot with SuperSU as it cannot install the binaries required.
Is anyone able to provide me with assistance in either properly unrooting, or rerooting and then installing Lollipop by other means and hiding root from Sky Go? I have searched other threads but I have no knowledge about recovery modes or flashing. I am on Three in the UK. Thanks

Thank you very much that was incredibly simple - installed lollipop through the PC suite, keeping my apps without reinstalling bloatware, great!
This may come off as a silly question but, I"m aware that AT&T and Verizon versions of the Note 4 there is no way to root it permanently but, even if you can temporary root it, is it still possible to install a custom rom? I'm in the process of downgrading from lollipop right now (I hate the new notifications) but just figure I'd ask.

without permanent root, no there is no way to flash a custom rom, if we get permanent then we can use flashfire or multisystem to flash custom roms (touchwiz only no CM or AOSP variants)

I have been wondering if it may be possible to eliminate all the bloatware from ATT and all bloatware from Samsung, by way of using the Kingroot process > then install Ti-Backup > then DELETE not freeze those applications.
Will such a thing work ? even if one may loose root after rebooting?
I there a possibility that that attempting something like that may cause a major crash on my phone?
In other words, I would like to be able to rid myself from all that bloatware that came with my out of the box N910-A i know about the disable feature on the apps manager, but i want those apps OUT.

And I am STILL hoping for PERMA-root sometime in the near future

unfortunately no that wont work, if you delete or modify the system partition IN ANY WAY it will cause the DM_VERITY to kick in. until we get past the OS Verification and write protection we cant delete or modify anything.

many devices with locked bootloaders have custom roms, The S5 for instance. it's not the locked bootloader that is preventing custom roms it is the need for permanent root, once we have that we can use flashfire or multirom to flash custom touchwiz roms. what the locked bootloader prevents is the ability to flash custom kernels thus preventing roms based off of CM or AOSP/AOKP

Hi I've never wanted to root or custom ROM. I read the instructions and they are pages deep and the issues that come up and are discussed in threads have such confusing back and forth discussions using lingo and abbreviations that make my head spin.
However... Oneplus did their last update on my 5t my fourth oneplus phone... With an already old security update.
Is the only way to not throw away a perfectly working, phone with good Ram and a fairly new battery I paid to have installed just months ago?
If I'm wanting to hold on another year or 2 use the only option custom ROMs that contain security updates?
Is there a way to add security updates without a ROM? Or maybe at least just learn to root and then add just updates or is it only in ROMs?
I could probably happily use my phone as is but worried what effect no security updates really is to my use.
I really tried videos on doing so this myself I'm not comfortable if problems happen. Not very techy.

Unfortunately you can no longer get security updates once your device is deemed as old.
Your options will be to get an antivirus app on your phone, install a custom ROM (like LOS or pixel exp), or you can get a new phone.
Since you're new to this stuff I highly recommend you just get a new phone or simply install an antivirus.
Not sure which anti virus is better than which. But I'm confident in Avira, McAfee, and Norton. You may want to purchase their plan though.

- if I root and install Android 11 custom ROM, security patches will be updated too?
- after this, would I be able to unroot and install company mail apps ( if rooted they will not work) ?

Personally I think that your company has put an unfair burden on you to run company mail and apps on your personal phone while expecting you to have an updated phone at the same time. An updated phone should have been "given" to you.
That being said, you can actually flash and run a custom rom without root. Root is optional.
Process is as follows: (you'll need a PC for this)
1. Backup ALL your data
2. Unlock the bootloader
3. Install custom recovery and reboot to recovery
4. Wipe cache & system and format internal memory
5. Copy custom rom & gapps to internal memory
6. Flash custom rom & gapps and reboot system

Yes if you install custom ROM you'll have security updates. It doesn't have to be Android 11 and you don't need root to install a custom ROM.
Also make sure to follow a precise guide about it so you don't encounter any issues. Always make a backup even if you're 100% sure you won't need it.
As far as I know mail apps don't check the integrity or do a SafetyNet check, so even if you root or don't it will work fine.
If you mean banking apps then you can install some modules to bypass the check or just completely remove root. Assuming that you rooted the device.
It shows my lack of knowledge never ever did I think you could Flash a ROM without being rooted.

But regarding company mail apps, I would need to hide bootloader unlocked status.

My banking apps working fine without root with crdroid 7.3 and flamegapps. Might work for your company mail app too.

I think if you change build.prop to some other phone with recent security patches you can bypass this.

Just for update:
I tried to Root a stock ROM, edit build.prop (security patch date), unroot, and then lock bootloader.
But even if it was a stock ROM, OP5T was not booting.
Booloader was stopping boot since it was detecting a non-stock ROM.
Indeed, I had to unbrick OP5T since I was not possible to unlock bootloader.
So, still not solved

Yeah I assumed you would know that you should root first. But seeing you even attempted to lock bootloader after modifying the device, seems I assumed wrong.
Magisk hide is working fine on later android versions like 8+. And for the bootloader it only trips CTS if your bootloader is using hardware backed key - Which is the case with OP5 - as CTS check also has hardware attestation. But it is possible to bypass said check by using SafetyNet Fix module, of course you will also install that from magisk manager.
