I know there are apps that provide the flashlight option.
My main goal is to have a constant flash on as I take pictures, not taking pictures with flash on.
I want to already provide light to an object in a dark space from my phone, and take pictures without flash.
I know before I switched to the Galaxy Note 3, I was on a rooted HTC Sensation, and it had a flashlight option in the quick menu, which allowed me to do what I'm trying to do.
Does anyone know how to do this without rooting yet?
There are apps for that
There is an app that is a flashlight that gets really really bright and is adjustable. It does require root though. It's called adjustable torch. I actually use it for the same purpose. Hope this helps.

just curious as to what you are shooting that you need light on to find it then the ligh off to take a pic!
Sure the explanation will be funny as heck in a Ron White show.

Amateur ghost hunter.
alright, i'm definitely not explaining this correctly.
how do i keep my flashlight ON, on my phone (running in the background), while I do other stuff on my phone?
You can't keep your flash light on, and use the camera at the same time. You need to have it off, and use the flash capability through the camera settings.
I don't like the flash, but if my flash light on my phone can run in the background, I could take pictures in the dark without using the flash action.
Am I making sense? I hope so ? ):

Ok Gotcha. Only way i know to do this is to take pics from the video camera. Then you can go back and delete the video file.

I find it annoying that after I have taken a picture and click on preview, it gives me the sharing option and not the ability to view the photo and scroll through my other images
is it possible to stop this happening, i'd rather it go directly to the gallery instead of the sharing part
I don't believe there is any way to disable this functionality.
I personally prefer this feature. But of course, your preference is subjective.
Yeah, it's subjective really. But I hate it as well
Just tap the photo - it will take you to the gallery and you can scroll through other pics to your heart's content

its the tapping that's annoying!
I've already clicked on the thumbnail, so one tap should be sufficient!
oh well!
thanks for the replies guys
I think because google wanted to add more immediate editing controls after the picture was taken. When someone takes a picture I guess editing/sharing functions for that picture are more important than starting a slideshow or starting to scroll through past pictures. If you want to take pictures you goto camera, if you want to view pictures you goto the gallery.
Yes its a very slight annoyance but not a major one and certainly not a drawback in any way (unless you want to view all your previous pictures everytime you take a new one)

By the way, is it possible to turn the camera sound off?

Thanks. That's a bummer, I was hoping to keep it stock.

You wouldnt be able to make changes like that to a stock rom anyway.

Hey guys, what are the optimal settings for taking the best possible photos using the camera? Also, what is the difference between the flash symbol with an A and without? Thanks.
Flash without A is forced flash (always on)
With a is automatic and only kicks in if light is low.

There aren't really any 'optimal' settings, apart from making sure you're taking 8mp photo's. Whether you want to take pictures in widescreen or not is up to you. I prefer not. Apart from that, it completely depends on the lighting and subject matter. If you have a relatively steady hand, the subject isn't going to move much and the lighting is alright, then the HDR setting can take some fantastic pictures. Auto seems to fine for most things

Do note that when the camera is on, the screen brightness is automatically set the maximum brightness, so a picture might look quite a bit darker in Gallery. I've set my screen at 30% brightness during normal use
I've tried to change the settings including the mode and exposure but same issue. Like I said when I am about to take a picture and looking at the screen, lighting is great, I take the picture but then when it hits the gallery it is so much darker.
Any ideas? I changed over from the nexus s which always took awsome pics and this is supposed to be better so any help would be appreciated.
I have not gone to a custom rom yet fyi.
appreciate the help
I notice that too. I think it's because the phone automatically turns brightness all the way up in the camera app, then it goes back to the brightness you set to when you exit the camera app. So that makes the picture turns out to look a lot darker.
try wiping the app data

bit of a novice so if you might explain the steps involved would be appreciated thank you in advance...
seems like the first suggestion helped the gallery show up brighter. what I did was go in and uncheck the automatic display and just set at a higher brightness.
any other suggestions always welcome
go to setting>apps>all>scroll and tap camera app>wipe data

thank you I will try that. low light shots seem to pose some challenges...and the flash washes out..gonna have to play around a bit with this to see if I can improve. Doesn't make sense that my nexus s seemed to take better shots but sure if I tweak some things I can get this on track
My phone is fully stock and has never been rooted. I updated to 4.4.3 a few days ago, and notice the manual mode in the camera is slow. Even if I use the fastest shutter speed, it takes a few seconds to take a picture. Auto mode is quick as usual. Anybody have a solution?

I'm glad I'm not alone with this one. Hopefully there will be a fix for this. I deleted the app data. It didn't do anything

Well you are not alone.
In the topic regarding the pics taken with the M8 we were discussing about the fact that now you can't see anymore what you shoot when using 4 second shutter speed (very annoying ) and also I've noticed like you that now in manual mode it's incredible slow.
I don't know I'd we are in the right place to discuss this matter...Personally I'm upset because I don't understand why they did this mess. I'm not fan of the UltraPixel camera and neither a fanboy, so I get used to the m8 camera, but now with this change HTC left me very disappointed.
I don't think they will revert back to the old camera...For them this is an improvement...

Man, that's crazy. The only improvement the camera needed was HDR mode (I use the lock focus trick, but I wish that wasn't needed), and removing the purple fringing if that was possible to fix in the software. Oh, if HTC added a fast shutter priority mode, that would have been nice.
But yes, they need to fix manual mode.
I am having issues with nexus 5x, with flash on & HDR off a the flash is pathetic in a Dark room the flash goes off but all the photos are dark? Or when there is a little light with flash forced on the room is no brighter??? Help.
In a bright room if I force the flash on the photo goes dark? This makes no logic?
A your else having problems?
Think I have found the problem, when the battery goes below 20% the flash looses most of its power.
Same problem here, when battery goes below 15% and i take a picture of near subject, the photo is almost all black. Does it happen to someone other?
I think however is a simply intrinsic energy saver...
Here's another thread with the same issue:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3382452
What have you guys done about your flash issues? Warranty?
I'm in the process of warrantying now along with garryboy. Just waiting for Google to send me the refurb unit before I send them mine.

It may sound stupid, but use the WhatsApp app..
I tried every other app than the stock camera and it doesn't take the photo after/before the flash turned on..
Tell me if it did work to you ?
*** EDIT : another solution that worked the best for me :
Use the camera nx with the zsl ! It works great with the flash unlike the stock camera app..
it work like a magic for me ! thanks
