T-Mobile HSPA+ Faster than T-Mobile LTE? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello everyone, I'm a bit confused here. I've been with T-Mobile since July and have no complaints, so far I love their network and the unlimited plan they offer. I've had LTE here in the Orlando area since July when I jumped on their network. Only recently after getting curious about their LTE speeds vs. their HSPA+ speeds, did I find out that their HSPA+ is faster than their LTE?
Does anyone happen to know why this might be?
At first I thought it might just be the ROM I'm on, I was thinking that somehow the signal icons or what not, got switched up. But it's the same result across 3 different ROMs.
Here's a couple of screen shots of speed tests done only a few minutes apart on both LTE and HSPA+. I know there's a difference in signal strength with LTE, but from previous tests, even with full signal of LTE, the speeds are the same, HSPA+ was still faster. The tests were done using the same servers.
Could this just be an issue with the radios on the S4 since they haven't been updated since the LTE roll out? Or just an issue with T-Mobile? I find it strange.
Has anyone else noticed the same thing?

Generally speaking, no LTE is not slower than HSPA+. Speed depends on A LOT of factors, Im going to judge from your screenshots that the LTE having weaker signal is the reason for not as fast as H+. Also, the number of devices on LTE might be a lot higher than the number of devices on H+ in your area. I just got LTE at my work, and i average 20 - 30 Mbps. I love it. Before with H+ i was only getting 8 Mbps. Speed seriously depends on a lot of factors.
When testing speed, take about 10 tests that day that time. then in the next day do the same thing but at a different time of day.. etc etc. then average.

That is correct.. It depends on how many devices that tower have.
When tmobile update to LTE here in Dallas, Tx my HSPA+ boost to highest. I used to get around 15-20Mbps download on H+ After a month or two of LTE my speed boost to 30-35Mbps download. I know because I had my S3 back then. My S4 with LTE gets around the same last I check.. 30-35Mbps. So yeah LTE is faster than H+ With faster uploads but you will never get top speeds on a device dual to so many people in that tower.
So where ever you have most be more LTE devices using that tower than H+

I've done tests with LTE at full signal strength and have gotten the same results. Also, I thought it might have been upgrades or something effecting it, so I've been doing the same tests for almost 2 weeks now, all with very, very similar results. Even at early morning hours (between 2 and 4AM) when network traffic is usually low, and I get the same results.
Before I took a screen shot, I ran 5 tests on both LTE and H+, the results were pretty the same as in the shots I posted.

I live in the Miami area and I can tell you that my T-Mobile H is faster then LTE. It shouldn't be but I did noticed this the other day with a couple of tests, so I agree with OP.

4G Service Sucks....

Mine barely ever connects and then when it does, its like it doesn't know because no pages will load(connection error). Got my azz handed to me by Bionic yesterday. My coworker and I were out for happy hour and did a little speed test on 4g...yep he definitely got me.
I need some WIMAX tweaks immediately!!! LOL..but not really LOLing. Im serious
Verizon's network is better. (fact)
Sprint's phones are better. (fact, with minor opinion)
It's a hard choice, but Sprint's network is fantastic in Florida, so I can't really complain.

4G doesn't suck, it is just Sprint's half assed implementation that sucks.

Sprint's 4G & 3G suck!
My 4g inside my house on first floor also sucks but verizon 4g also sucked at my house. In fact verizon dropped occasional calls and I needed to get a network extender. Sprint's network will get better but will probably need lte phone in the future to take advantage of it.
Try the wimax tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&page=6
Basically lets wimax latch on to a weaker signal
im pretty sure its dependant on area. I have no issues with 3g. I get usually between 700kbps-1.3mbps. on 4g i usually get between 7-12mbps. Not too shabbby for a guy like me
Sprint 4G is garbage. Downtown in 4 different cities you get 2 bars outside and nothing as soon as you go indoors.

Its one thing to try to fix this issue (via tweaks, etc) its another to whine.
Feel free to leave any carrier whose network is not performing to your standards.
I haven't even had the chance to experience 4G yet here in my area (not available yet). Still having to pay the $10 a month "premium"data fee though.
That's what truly sucks!

Yes, it sucks but the $10 premium is even for smartphones that do not have 4G.
Sprints 3g speeds have been pretty bad. Anyone I meet on other carriers have like 3mbps while mine has like 1mbps. One bar of 4g signal and I am at 3mbps, two or three bars and I am at 6mbps or more.
Sprint 4g works pretty well for me up and down the east coast anyway in major cities. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and hotels near airports. The only place I find Sprint to kind of suck is oddly New York.
I had T-mobile which worked most places but their service sucked for speed especially at my home, solid bars but only .4 Mbps with whereas I get 1 Mbps 3g and 8 Mbps 4G with Sprint. Almost as fast as my Comcast cable internet.
Anyway YMMV. Probably VZW is the "best" but their data plans suck with 2Gb limit and they're expensive as hell with poor customer service. Instead of complaining how about doing a little research, ask friends, and take advantage of the trial period and figuring out which works best for you in your area.

Well hurry up and fix the Oxnard Ca sites, evenings and weekends my download speeds are less then 70kbps. From 3am to 9am during the week I can get 1.5 Mbps down.

You should be able to get over 1mbps if Verizon has 3G in your area
Thanks. Where don't they have 3g network? lol.
Anybody ever do any side by side speed tests with other devices? I ran a test with three E4GTs, an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D. Both EVO's cleared over a meg d/l while all three E4GTs (including mine) barely broke 200 kb/s. Sprint needs to get their network up to snuff no doubt but I think there is also something going on with the hardware/firmware of our phones too. I spent an hour on the phone with Sprint and Samsung today about it (of course they weren't able to help and played dumb).
For a while I was pulling my hair out, and updating prls, having Sprint reset my account and reprovisioning my phones.
E4GT, Optima S, Evo 4G and hacked Droid Incredible all scored the same pathetic sub 100Kbs in my area. I ran again at 5am and all of them managed above 1Mbps. Just over loaded towers in my area. Its worse since the Iphone.
I guess Anaheim Hills, CA is unaffected. My speeds have been great.
The Evo3d received a network service update a couple days ago and a lot of people who received it said they are getting better 3g speeds all of a sudden. Just check the second link I posted up on this thread. So comparing an Evo3d to anything might not be fair at the moment. All depending on your area that is. I received a network service update on my girl's Evo3d and it still gets the same 3g speeds as my ET4g. Just average speeds in my area. Here's the link explaining network changes in the Bay area.

Maybe they gave in and just gave it the ENG radio. When I had my E3D and I flashed the leaked eng radio (I forget the version number) my speeds were anywhere from 30-60% faster. It might have affected battery life, but, who knows...battery life sucked on that thing regardless.
I always found it strange that every radio update just seemed to make it go slower and slower...I think Sprint was up to something...

I am. Compared to the Rezound I had for a couple weeks the dBm is -100 to -140 where the Rezound was -80.
Last night it kept dropping to 3G and would not get 4G back unless I rebooted.
Speedtest was about half what it normally was with the Rezound on 4G
This morning the -dBm is over -100 but the speedtest is about to where it was normally so I don't know.
I travel for work so I'm going to give it week and see how to behaves as I move around.
I really like this phone but I need it to be a phone first and if it drops calls or the 4G is this bad it's going to be a deal breaker.
I just did another speed test at -108 dBm and it's over 20MB down. I was getting 4MB down last night and the signal was all ranging all over the place while I was staying in the same spot.
I have to imagine the VZW network was getting pounded pretty hard last night with new adopters and phones being activated. I'd say give it a few days and check back into it

I am experiencing this also coming from a Thunderbolt. Granted the Thunderbolt had flashed radio/Kernal/Rom's. Would that even matter? In this case will an updated radio provide a stronger signal or just increased reliability from being dropped? Maybe both? Idk. Anyone?
These are all in the exact same spot ranging from -100 to -140dBm

I drop signal at random though.
Would that cause it to drop down to 3G?
I have same signal i used to have on my rezound, i still get almost same speeds around 28 up and 18-20 down here in Minneapolis. rezound used to get 32 down and around 20 up, but i am thinking since verizon network was pounded yesterday so there will be some impact on speeds
Whatever new phone that comes out, you can always count on a bad signal thread.
I haven't noticed a difference in signal, but I do think it has better sound quality than my Droid Incredible.
Edit: I just did a speed test (3g) and it was very choppy and not great. I live across the street from a cell tower, so that is not good.
The Moto RAZR I returned yesterday to get this Samsung had much better reception.

Maybe your coverage area? I am in Tampa...in a building, in my office, i get 5-6 megs down and 2-3 up...with my LTE GNex, i cant even hold a 4g signal, and when i do its 5 megs each way. Nothing earth shattering....but on top of it, that drops to 3g and stays there. The GSM, always had a connection.

Cellular strength and throughput

We know how much you like to stream, ahem, "videos", and so cellular data is mega-important. Rate this thread to express how you think the OnePlus 3T's LTE performs. A higher rating indicates that it's fantastic: throughput is excellent and signal strength is top-notch.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add.
Returning mine because of lte T-Mobile network issues
I've gotten better signal with my 3T than any other phone on T-Mobile. Now get service in areas where I never have in the past. Don't seem to have the issues that others are talking about, but enough people are reporting them it seems to at least consider that.
On Cricket which is AT&T. Limited to 8mb download. And yet I got 10mb once. I check oil wells, and drive all over. There are places where you just know that you are going to loose your signal. How ever I have not had even 1 dropped call since purchasing the 3t. I usually change phones every couple of weeks. But I think I may just keep this one.

The cellular experience is pretty mediocre on this device. When comparing other flagships, this device gets up to -12 dBm weaker signal on RSRP for LTE and also has worse SNR ratio thus resulting in slower speeds. Unless you're right next to a tower with a strong signal, other flagships outclass the OP3T in this area by a noticeable margin.
Using t mobile get great speeds for streaming almost never buffers (unless I've used all my data) downloads are fast and I love the lte aggregation to get faster speeds.
I'm in upstate NY on at&t and get alot better reception than my lg g3 did and surprisingly slightly better than my gs7
Haven't had any issues here with signal strength. Though often it felt like it would take to long to switch down to 3G when the LTE got weak, resulting in 10 to 20 seconds with no throughput whatsoever. But that seems to be fixed on tge latest firmware.
Otherwise I've been able to get some nice speeds with CA.

you can use lte discovery app to check which band you are connected to.

Question 5G data speeds are terrible, why?

Testing results in garbage speed (consistently less than 7 Mbps down, less than 1 Mbps up, 20-25 ms ping, 6-8 ms jitter). Signal strength is apparently 38% (-111 dBm). I noticed it was bad sometimes when I was actually out and not at home on my WiFi, but I had to use my hotspot for a few hours since they were doing maintenance on the internet here at home, and it was just terrible. So now I have to ask.... what could be making it so slow? Is it just me, or are others suffering from terrible speed as well? Is it my modem? The area I'm in (Sacramento, CA)? Or is it actually on T-Mobile's end?
Just ran a few Speedtest app 5g tests in Southern Nevada...

I'm on EU firmware with T-Mobile network in Texas, and speeds are kinda all over but consistently fast. Odd that it used LTE for most of my tests instead of 5G though.
I'm not sure if it's always just been "bleh" speeds for 5G here or not, but seeing as how this is the first 5G device I've owned, it's hard to say if it's on my end or theirs.
Nope, must be something on my end. Their map says my area has "5G Ultra Capacity" so that can't be the issue.

Might just be your testing locations. 5g actually performs poorly in home environment for me, about the same as lte for speed but less reliable. I'd check open network maps to determine if you're actually close to a 5g cell tower (not relying on carrier provided maps that tend to skew positively for them), and if so, check if you get better signal outside. If you are close to a tower, get decent speeds outside, but not inside, then getting a signal booster for faster mobile speeds indoor would be needed.
It is definitely testing location. When I test at home, the speed is slower than 4g by a lot. When I test at work in NYC I have mind blowing speeds. Faster than my IPS at home.

Are they consistently like that? The results I mentioned above were at home. But I tested again yesterday while I was out, at a grocery store just down the street a few blocks, and I got 19.9 up/ 3.98 down (which is better, but still pretty sad).

I wouldn't be able to tell you honestly because I do not live in NYC. I commute there for work. I have one ran speed test there 2 times and both times I had blazing fast speed like that. Over at my house, the 5g is poor and I only use 4g.
@GuyInDogSuit I've been having the same issues lately. Not sure what's been going on. T-Mobile OP9P converted to DA firmware, using Family Mobile SIM connected using T-Mobile APN.
Was surprised to get these results today. Went to download an app update using mobile data, realized it downloaded in two seconds, so I figured I'd speed test it. I live in ****ty Ohio lol.

Holy mackerel!!
Anyway, to update on this.... It would seem it is definitely something in the area, and not just the 5G. I tested the LTE on my tablet and got piss-poor results on that as well. 9.89 down, 0.07 up. Yikes.
They're fine here
I was all over the place today, in at least two different counties, and tested several times. The speeds weren't spectacular, but they were still much better than the sadness I get at home. I should look into some ways to improve that, especially since it will be my only source of internet for a few days next week.
